Heck I remember they played at a Craps game during one of the intermissions years ago. You gotta be desperate.

Hell, Joel washed my friggin' hair a few years ago in Annapolis.

Anyone gonna show up?

hopefully not.

I remember when they were just white trash from rural Maryland. Oh wait, they still are.

some of y'all (particularly the multitudes that exist in rhett's head) really need to learn how to shut the fuck up sometimes.
saying something negative about a band's music is one thing. not everyone likes the same thing, and intelligent discourse about musical differences is great. however, there really is no need for personal comments about people that you don't know anything about personally. and i'm not just talking about bands that i'm friends with, as in this thread or several others. i'm talking about any band, or public figure, or anyone you don't know. it's really not cool.
negative energy always comes back. i wish i could be there to see it bite some of y'all in the ass.

I call it having a sense of humor. If you can't take a little ribbing, you surely are a weak person. Would I mock them in person? No. But for crist sake, if they want to make themselves into public figures, they're going to have to be open to a bit of ribbing. I would think that any band that appears on the Leno show is good fodder for a bit of ribbing. It's not like I'm making fun of the crippled black guy that lives next door to me...I'm making fun of dorks who wear black eyeliner and listen to the Cure, for gosh sakes.

quote:
Originally posted by thatguy:
some of y'all (particularly the multitudes that exist in rhett's head) really need to learn how to shut the fuck up sometimes.
saying something negative about a band's music is one thing. not everyone likes the same thing, and intelligent discourse about musical differences is great. however, there really is no need for personal comments about people that you don't know anything about personally. and i'm not just talking about bands that i'm friends with, as in this thread or several others. i'm talking about any band, or public figure, or anyone you don't know. it's really not cool.
negative energy always comes back. i wish i could be there to see it bite some of y'all in the ass.

I was thinking about this and came to the conclusion that its an internet chatboard and we should be able to say what we want and voice our opinions freely.
I dont think anyone even said anything libelous.
-
For the record, I don't know anything about the band personally. I don't know anything about where the band is from. That's why it was a total joke. I guess there must be some truth to the punchline, otherwise it wouldn't have struck a nerve. Or perhaps I unknowingly repeated a stale joke that had grown old? People do that about me on this board occasionally.
I only use the phrase "white trash" in the same way black people call themselves niggers...

-
I remember when they played Hechts at fair oaks mall. Guess they've gotten a little bigger than the boys department part of the store now.
-
they really are nice guys. when they played here a lot more and they weren't swarmed by girls i had a nice conversation with them, and my friend is quite close with them. i'm not making fun of them as people just the whole poppunk thing in general... it just does not agree with me, i guess. who doesn't joke about the boys who wear a lot of eyeliner? I miss the days when Less Than Jake played small clubs (9:30). They are one of the best bands to see live. It saddens me that they are opening for NFG & GC...what's wrong with that picture?! At least I might see them at warped tour this summer.

If you're going to choose to be rock starrs, especially ones that wear foolish clothes and eyeliner, you're going to open yourself up to mocking. That comes with the territory of choosing to be a rock star. If you don't want public scrutiny, choose a more private career.
I'm not saying that mocking is a good thing, but it comes with the territory.
[This message has been edited by Rhett Miller (edited 02-27-2003).]

I didn't write to book on fashion trends. But wasn't the whole idea of punk to look foolish and rebellious, to go against fashion? At the time it was fresh and new and rebellious. But now it just looks downright campy and silly. Like wearing bad 70's clothes.
I look at pictures of The Clash and I think "Great band, but they sure did look foolish." I look at the Pistols and I think "Novelty act." I look at the Police and I think, "God I fucking hate Sting."
If Good Charlotte had originated in 1978, I think they probably would have been emulating Genesis or Yes or Jethro Tull. Hell, if they had originated in the 80's they probably would have been emulating those bands, maybe sharing bills with Journey or REO Speedwagon.

quote:
Originally posted by Shadrach:
I didn't realize you wrote the book on fashion trends. I had always kind of wondered about the identity of someone self-important enough to call himself "Thatguy". Now the truth has been revealed: "Thatguy" is God Almighty (Budha?) (Allah?) himself.
Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but let's review my case for the month of February. I did do some bad things. Probably the worst thing I did was make fun of rock stars on an internet chatboard. And yes, I did also fall off the wagon, consuming three beers and three glasses of wine during the month.. I also took your name in vain a couple of times too....those bad drivers really aren't a good excuse for besmirching your name like that.
But I also did some good things. I called my mum weekly, and bought her plane tickets to come visit me. I gave my Metro seat to an elderly African-American woman. I put down the toilet seat after every use, even though I probably pee five times as much as my girlfriend. And finally, I gave my girlfriend the hot beef injection within 24 hours of every time she indicated a desire.
So yes, God, I did some bad things AND some good things this month. I will try to be better next month.
Well, I'll let you go know. Please work some sense into Saddam and Bush and Blair so that we might avert war.
Yours truly,
Love,
Rhett.

quote:
Originally posted by thatguy:
so you're saying that you are intentionally doing something that you know is not a good thing. great karma points there.

Guess you really can't comment for anyone except yourself...but...

there are as many answers to this question as there are people with tattoos/piercings/etc. a friend of mine asked people for their answers to this question a while back. you can read some answers here[/url].
i can only speak about my own motivations. unfortunately, it often comes down to one of those "if you don't know, i can't explain it" kinda deals, but i'll do my best to give a short answer that will at least give you some idea.
everyone has drives that motivate their behavior. hunger, thirst, sex, that kind of thing. i have a drive that motivates me to modify my body in very specific ways. my body is supposed to be modified. it's what is right for me. my body knows what it wants, and i listen to what it tells me.

some modifications are purely aesthetic. some are more functional. all are a test of the body's capability to undergo change. our bodies are capable of so many amazing things that most people never experience. through modification, i test the boundaries of my body. i see how it reacts to different stimuli, how it accomodates new things, how it adapts, how it evolves. through modification, i have a better understanding of how my body works.

quote:
And do you feel like it makes people focuse too much on it, and preevents people from getting to know the real you?

the modifications are the real me. well, they're a part of the real me.
as for the attention my appearance attracts, i could not possibly care less. i would make the same choices i have made if i were the only person on the planet doing them or if everyone else looked just like me. they are for me, and for noone else. i do not make my choices because they gain attention.
my appearance does however work as a bit of a filter sometimes. there's more to me than ink and steel, and i'm more than just my body, but if you can't handle the outward appearance, then you definitely can't handle what's inside.
i'm giving the world a sneak peek at what's inside by turning my soul inside out and putting it out there for public viewing. it's a risky undertaking, and has consequences that few people could possibly understand, but i am willing to accept any and all outcomes related to my choices.

Yeah I totally agree with you thatguy. Too often people judge other people on their appearance. Many people argue that people that choose to have piercings and decide not to look like the average person have something wrong with them or lack attention. Maybe in some cases thats true, but for the most its not. Try going into an Abercrombie and Fitch, you see everyone nicely dressed and perfect, how do they treat you? Then go into a Hot Topic, or not your average "preppy" store, now how do they treat you? A hell of alot better than then the employees in AF. That tells alot, if you don't personally know the person, you shouldn't decide your opinion on their appearance.
-
Also, my last post goes with this one. You all say that GC & NFG are poseurs and aren't punk, that they dress trendy, and have gotten too big. Honestly, you can't judge someone on their appearance. How great would it be if music just existed and there weren't genres of music, so you could just listen to what appeals to you. Listen to music and decide whether its good or not, don't look at the artist or band and decide not to like them because of their appearance or choice of clothing. Who cares what they look like or wear? The only purpose of clothing is to cover your body, right? Also, bands can't decide how big they get, most of the time their labels decide where their music is sold, what the next single is, and even sometimes their appearance. Bands for the most part can't deny their labels decisions because then they could just drop them. Its very hard for bands to release a CD on their own, not saying they can't, but its very hard. So please, next time you hear a song, don't judge a band on their appearance, like the song for the song.
P.S. I'm going to the show, bash all you want

Ok i have absolutely no problems with Good Charlotte and New Found Glory. As a matter of fact i've seen them both once and they werent bad. But please dont insult Punk by labeling them Punk. They are HFS music plain and simple and i would hardly call HFS punk!!!!!
-
Yeah I totally agree with you, I wasn't saying that NFG and GC are punk at all. I'm just saying don't call them poseurs because you don't even know whether they are punk or not or what they are trying to be. Besides, punk isn't the way you dress and just because you listen to punk doesn't make you punk. Punk is a way you think and act, its a state of mind.

Thanks for the insights, Thatguy...I think it was cool of you to so openly put it out there...body modification beyond some earrings and getting my haircut is not for me, but I am intrigued by the psychology behind those who choose to engage...one of the "testimonials" in your link inspired me to read The Story of O over the weekend, which I had known what was about, but never really read...brought up all kinds of interesting concepts about "freedom" from the physical world, pushing one's physical existence to limits that open them emotionally and spiritually, etc. I am pretty sure I disagree with any practical application of these concepts, but it is very interesting nonetheless!

I'm going to be there, and I'm not really happy about it, but a friend of mine made me swear that I'd go. Plus Less Than Jake is opening, which in itself is motivation enough for me.
But yeah. My lifelong dream is to beat the living hell out of Benjy from Good Charlotte, or at least give him a good slap in the face. "Stop talking about how fucking hardcore you are!" He really bothers me. Well, not THAT much, but I need a target for all my rage at everyone in the music world who annoys me, so I just focus my angst on him. *kick*
But... sigh. I'll admit, I think their music is occasionally catchy, although quite frankly, most of it sounds the same. I just can't stand the way they prance around proclaiming their punk-rock-ness. Please. Clothes do NOT always make the man. And I do like New Found Glory (or at least, I OUGHT to by now after near-constant exposure to them thanks to a friend of mine) but that guy's voice really starts to grate on my nerves after about half an hour.
Should be interesting.
