Title: Can I smoke a big fat stogey at the 9:30 Club?
Post by: J'Mal on February 26, 2003, 11:15:00 am
I'm an old antisocial geezer and I'd like to know if I can park my big fat ass near the front of a show and light up a big fat stinky c-gahr, even if it annoys other people in the club standing 412 feet away from me. I understand most people accept a little cigarette smoke here and there, but I'm talking fog-machine saddam style c-gahrs here, one after the other...
If you do, I will smite you. Just don't go to the Yo La Tengo show if you don't want to be smitten.

quote:
Originally posted by J'Mal:
I'm an old antisocial geezer and I'd like to know if I can park my big fat ass near the front of a show and light up a big fat stinky c-gahr, even if it annoys other people in the club standing 412 feet away from me. I understand most people accept a little cigarette smoke here and there, but I'm talking fog-machine saddam style c-gahrs here, one after the other...

I don't like too many cigarettes, either, but there's nothing much to be done about that.
Cigar smoking is different. It takes a rare number of cigarettes to destroy the 9.30 club, but cigars are like the nuclear bomb of smoking. Lots of places permit cigarettes but ban cigar and pipe smoking. It's perfectly rational. The 9.30 should be one of them.

I don't want the government to ban any kind of smoking at the club.
I want the club to ban cigar and pipe smoking, as a customer, and I believe most customers would prefer it. At the show I'm talking about there was only one asshole who kept smoking cigars. I'm sure I wasn't the only one among the rest of the crowd who wanted it stopped.

I am an avid cigar smoker and I am happy to have a club where cigars are accepted and appreciated by those who smoke them. I will be smoking cigars when I attend shows. For those of you who don't know about cigars I would just like to make it clear that I prefer maduro wrapper cigars (dark wrappers) often considered to be more aromatically potent than the lighter brethren in the cigar family.

actually...no...
nauseated
Nauseate \Nau"se*ate\, v. i. [imp. & p. p. Nauseated; p. pr. & vb. n. Nauseating.] [L. nauseare, nauseatum, fr. nausea. See Nausea.] To become squeamish; to feel nausea; to turn away with disgust.

nau·seous ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nôshs, -z-s)
adj.
Causing nausea; sickening: ??the most nauseous offal fit for the gods? (John Fowles).
Usage Problem. Affected with nausea.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
nauseous·ly adv.
nauseous·ness n.
Usage Note: Traditional critics have insisted that nauseous is properly used only to mean ??causing nausea? and that it is incorrect to use it to mean ??affected with nausea,? as in Roller coasters make me nauseous. In this example, nauseated is preferred by 72 percent of the Usage Panel. Curiously, though, 88 percent of the Panelists prefer using nauseating in the sentence The children looked a little green from too many candy apples and nauseating (not nauseous) rides. Since there is a lot of evidence to show that nauseous is widely used to mean ??feeling sick,? it appears that people use nauseous mainly in the sense in which it is considered incorrect. In its ??correct? sense it is being supplanted by nauseating.

the "no" part was not directed at Rhett...I guess we we were acutally posting at the same time...still, based on the usage note, I'm not sure nauseous is the exact right word, but we all get the drift!
[This message has been edited by Celeste (edited 03-03-2003).]

speaking as a smoker, I can say that it's just plain politeness not to smoke in the midst of a crowd. You're an asshole if you think you can stand there with people crammed all around you, and just blow smoke in everybody's face, drop ash on their shoes, and occasionally almost light someone's hair on fire (I've only smoked in a "crowd" once and definitely achieved all of these things). If you're gonna smoke, you go to the bar or to the back or somewhere where there's elbow-and-smoke-dissapation (sp?) room. It shouldn't have to be a question of legality; it should just be a question of good manners.
But remember, smokers are paranoid. We feel like we're the MOST repressed minority there is, at least in terms of getting away with stuff in public places. We're touchy about these things, so if there's a place where we CAN actually smoke without having to hide away somewhere, of course we're going to take advantage of it. :P
And quite frankly, if the guy was bothering you that much, get some balls and ask him to move. If you're not nervy enough to just say, "Sir, you smell like a wet dog and I can't actually see the band through your haze," then make something up: "Sir, my friend here has asthma, and we're afraid that if you keep blowing smoke in her face, she's going to have an attack and die convulsing right there on your ugly wing-tips." If he's still an ass after that, feel free to spit in his hair or something, cause it's out of your hands.
That is all.

he wasn't anywhere near me and it was still choking. i think someone else next to him complained because he was having an animated conversation with someone. it's probably useless to let someone like that know they're being an ass, he has to be a total idiot not to know.
Rhett: Kasey Chambers was good. Her voice was a bit off since she had a cold, but it was a delightful show. Excellent openers, too, her dad doing his solo thing, followed by a pretty good bluegrass band, robinella and the cc strings..
