I loved this movie and became an instant fan of the music. Now playing at the Landmark theatres! Go see it!

Not recommended: Waitress. The worst movie I've seen in a long, long time.

I bought the three colors movies about 5 years ago and still have not watched them.  I don't know why.

 Recently watched and enjoyed:

 Half Nelson
 Little Children
 Science of Sleep
 Casino Royale

I watched Little Children this weekend and thought it was great. Reminds me a lot of the Lincoln Park posse of stay-at-home moms. We even have an extramarital affair that everyone knows about it but noone discusses (in the open).

My best friend did foley work on this movie.
I really loved Half Nelson too.

For those of you that haven't yet check out The Proposition.  Screenplay and musical score by Nick Cave....an amazing movie.

I second that emotion.

Also The Wind That Shakes the Barley, although kind of a downer was very well done I thought.

Buster Keaton's The General at AFI is a lot of fun.

Third for The Proposition.
When i heard the movie was being made, I figured it was going to be good.
I was still suprised at how great is really is.

Am I the only American person who turns on the sub-titles for Australian and Britsh 'english' movies?

 Oldboy is another good movie.

I cast my vote for that one as well.  Hell of a storyline, good acting, just an all-around great movie.  Some may need to watch twice to tie-in all the storylines, though . . . .

The Lives of Others was amazing.

I saw Fracture yesterday, and that was surprisingly entertaining.

I thought it was good, reminds me of "American Beauty". I must be senstive though...I am left a little disturbed.
I also watched "Notes on a Scandal". I probably should have watched a more upbeat movie right after "Little Children". On the side of good but "heavy" movies: "Half Nelson" is excellent, and Maggie G. does a great job in "Sherrybaby".

Just me or did anyone else enjoy "Stranger Than Fiction"?
If anyone could recommend a decent comedy I'm grateful.

Really? Really? I thought the movie was painfully bad. Contrived, cliched, stereotypical, stilted, and one dimensional are adjectives that come to mind when describing the characters, dialogue, and storyline. Not a single one of the characters garnered any empathy from me. Were we supposed to empathize with a woman who cheats on her less than perfect husband with her gynecologist? Yuck.

Though I must say, I did enjoy watching Andy Griffith in action. And the pies? Meh. I'd rather have ice cream.

i felt the same way. its hard to watch that film, and not want to eat pies. i agree, it was an excellent film. keri russell is quite great in that, and im loving jeremy sisto. he plays a control-freak/abusive SOB quite well.

sad to know that adrienne shelley wont be making more films. i thought this film was really great and it'd be nice to have more women writer/directors around. theres never enough.

I actually saw it as the woman who was the one in control in the movie.

The insecure/needy husband actually did seem to love and emotionally need his wife. The wife didn't seem to be in love with or emotionally need the husband. Thus, the balance of control was tipped awkwardly to the wife. And of course someone is going to be a "control freak" if the natural balance of the relationship gives them none.

Carandiru isn't as powerful, or put together as Cididad de Deus.

There are just too many good films in past and present..  Do you want something recent?  what are you into?  what themes do you like?  I shall espouse a mantra..

For pure action/gun porn, District B13 is a real hoot. It's heavy on parkour, the art of running top-speed around urban environments (like that first chase scene in Casino Royale). It ain't deep, but it's pretty fun.

Just saw Battle Royale for the first time recently too. That was pretty intense.

oh yeah.  boycott all mainstream theatres.  the movies are terrible anyways.  support all the landmark theatres, shirlington, dupont, cinema arts, afi, goethe and the museums.  warner theatre is owned by live nation/clear channel.  boycott that place also.

and in other recommended movies news... (unfortunately it competes with the veils at dc9 and skinny puppy at the 930):

Mon June 11- Film Screening: "THE JESUS LIZARD - LIVE" free (Black Cat) Backstage 9:00

 Film Screening:
 THE JESUS LIZARD - LIVE
While studio recordings of Chicago's The Jesus Lizard are part of the canon of '90s indie rock, anyone who saw them knows their reputation as one of the live bands of that era is completely accurate. This film captures the original quartet in 1994 playing to a packed and frenzied crowd at the Venus De Milo in Boston. The band's workmanlike approach to their taunt, pummeling sound is contrasted by frontman David Yow's Dionysian revelry as he whips himself - and the crowd - into an ecstatic mess. This two camera shoot catches all the blood, spit and sweat of a truly killer live band at their peak.

"To put it bluntly (or perhaps merely state the obvious), The Jesus Lizard were the greatest live band of the last decade of the 20th century. Mr. David Yow will forever be the frontman to end all other frontmen. The Chicago live music scene may never be the same again and for that, we are eternally grateful."

 decisions, decisions...

they used to. the old 930 club used to show alternative films and videos on the monitors spread thru out the club, and for a time the new 930 club did as well. they should bring them back.
the 930 club isnt just a concert venue, its part of our cultural landscape and that includes music, art, film, fashion, performing arts etc.
for the 930 club to remain relevant, they need to do more then showcase corporate bands promoting their album sales. they need to remain part of that cultural landscape.
