 how do i convert it into an mp3 (or m4a) file?

 Very easy-to-use, self-explanitory tool that lets you convert from one format to another with one click. Just make sure you have the plugins for each format you want to convert from/to installed along with the program.

There are quite a few free trial versions of programs that will do it and they're all very similar so rather than pay for any one software, I usually use all the trial versions that are available.

ran into a little snafu with the first thing i tried... but that dbpoweramp did the trick. thanks fellas.

I know your question has already been answered, but I would pick VLC. It's a DVD player that plays, literally, everything (including .ogg files). Very useful program to have.
