Any comments, recommendations, RIYLs, etc for this band. I've never heard any of their stuff but a few friends have said they're worth seeing.
-
I would say they are definitely worth seeing.
There is a new "Best of" album out called "A Gun to the Head" which is all old stuff. I think the new album is great. So did the culture czars at BigYawn (http://www.bigyawn.net/cdreview.php?id=39)

I like the new album as well, but I think you could be happy with just the Signals, Calls and Marches EP, really great
unfortunately I will be missing them for the 3rd time
-
If you can track it down, I'd suggest the original Ryko sampler. It's pretty much an anthology of everything up to '88. I think there are only a few missing tracks. It actually has more tracks than the new collection they just released.
I'll recommend ONoffON too. Nice comeback for them.

what everybody said, though i would track down "vs" first.
RIYL: sonic youth, fugazi, wire, pixies, husker du, inventive guitar playing, and intellectual lyrics
-
What does RIYL stand for?
-
"vs" is their seminal work. "onoffon," their latest, is really good too.
i saw 'em at 930 about 9 mos ago-- the place was only half full but it was a great, energetic show. i don't know a ton of their stuff but had a fun time. they really enjoy playing and it's pretty obvious.

so basically you need
the new greatest hits album
the new album
the Ryko sampler
VS.
Signals, Calls and Marches

It is all good. Seen them twice now that they have reformed (minus Martin Swoope plus Bob Weston). Both times they were really good, a band that broke up for a reason that you can not argue with (hearing issues). They solved that, and still bash it out well.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll check them out. Hopefully the show won't sell out.

you also need "the horrible truth about burma" because it is one of the best live albums ever. besides their own amazing songs, they cover the stooges' "1970" and pere ubu's "heart of darkness."

And the reissue CD adds a bunch of stuff not on the LP. Killer stuff.
