put on your dancing shoes!
-
anyone have an idea of what time hes going to take the stage?
-
Dan Deacon is the real draw for this show.
I got shut out. :(
Edit: BC show times on weeknights are typically 8:30, 9:30, 10:30.
-
D.D. only played 20 minutes last night in his "hometown," hope you get a little longer set tonight.
Mr. Gillis however did not disappoint, and tore some shit up, (literally)leaving a church full of folks in a sweaty heap. Damn good stuff, saw a boardie there snappin pix, they'll probably be up at some point.
Dress appropriately or you'll be sorry <img src="http://images.jupiterimages.com/common/detail/98/05/23360598.jpg" alt=" - " />

i really dont think dan deacon is the "real draw" for this show. girl talk is ultra hyped right now. i wasnt overly impressed when i saw these two at the ottobar a while back but i was sick at the time. its going to be sooo packed tonight.

How was the venue? There seems to be a few shows coming up there in the next few months.

It's a church, I mean REALLY a church, they either don't have or remove the pews so it's a big open space with a stage.
Very little air circulation, a lot of hot bodies in there and it gets musty fast. But for the type of shows they normally book in there, it's fine.
I suppose it's a little bigger than the black cat mainstage as far as capacity. But there is a strict no alcohol rule, and I imagine that all their shows will be all ages, so that's two issues...lotsa kids, and no alcohol to blunt the effect of there being lotsa kids.
All things considered if they made it 18 and up, rolled in a keg or TWO, and kept it non-smoking it would be the best venue in Baltimore. That's a low bar to hurdle to be sure, but the sight lines are a hell of a lot better than Sonar, the band box that is the Ottobar is like seeing a show in a chimney (perhaps that will improve Jan. 1st), and The Talking Head and 8x10 are just is too small to be consequential.

Just posted miss pretentious' review of the show along with some killer pics:

don't forget the shows at the church have an 11 p.m.curfew too. ickles.
-
You had me at "The End." That's an incredible picture!
-
Actually, the ottobar isn't so bad since they made the main band area non-smoking. It still smells a little b/c of the bar, but not as much as it used to.

There was a surprising amount of cursing in that review.

You can take the girl out of West Virginia, but you can't take the West Virginia out of the girl...
-
*shrug* The majority of it was from the show. The screen flashed it and Gregg said it. Paraphrasing is fun.

Really? You allow old geezers on BYT?

Only if they drink Sparks and pose for photos at the Rock and Roll Hotel and are skinny.

Baltimore show was bangin'. Wish I had a ticket for tonight though...
-
good times
-
White Williams was the best act of the night.
Dan Deacon started out strong but ultimately disappointed.
Girl Talk...umm not sure what the big deal is. He uses a laptop and mix .wav files of popular songs. People then go bananas. I doubt he really has talent. ;)
-
i thought girl talk was better at the ottobar and i was underwhelmed with that performance. and that show was sold out? seemed about half full and i was there the whole time. dan deacon was awful. i went out to smoke about 3 times during the show and every time there was an underage kid getting booted for drinking..and they werent leaving without a fight. one girl was crying b/c she "loved girl talk!"
-
I went to the show last night and was completely underwhelmed. We missed White Williams. I thought Dan Deacon was okay and really dont see what the big deal is about Girl Talk. All the BC staff seemed a bit annoyed by the whole scene.Definitely not my thing. It seemed like everyone was having a good time, so I guess they are doing something right.
I also saw tons of kids getting busted for underage drinking. My favorite line of the night. Some wasted kid was getting booted for drinking something out of a plastic cup. He kept claiming it was "Fresca" and that he was "diabetic". All I could think of was Caddyshack..."How about a Fresca.....Hmmm"
Not a fun night (for me at least)to be at the Black Cat
-
i missed white williams too, and caught half of dan deacon. i was felt i was tuning into an alien frequency until a hot slinky chick got into my orbit and flirted with me the rest of the night. your companionship makes or breaks a dance party like this. (had to tell some a* hole to f* off earlier when he got into my space tried to instruct me to wave my hand??)
all the kids dancing on stage and the dj nowhere to be seen is odd but i suppose that's the show's gimmick. it seems to work. i missed the transition when the kids moved onto the stage. were they preselected or something?
for a 180 in experience, i'm seeing the mountain goats tonight...
-
Had a good time, but the Girl Talk set dragged in the middle, with the assorted technical difficulties and stretches of Miami bass music that went on too long. Still pretty fun--I haven't seen a DC crowd get that into a show in a long time--and whoever at the Black Cat set the air conditioners on full mega-blast before the show is a genius.
-
I had a great time and it was nice to see the dc crowd so in to it. Watching the stage crew get bumped and pushed by everyone on stage was pretty funny, they did not seem to be having a good time.
I agree that it did drag a little in the middle but overall I thought it was very good and would not hesitate to see him live again. Met Dan Deacon walking out at the shirt stand to end my night.
At one transition Girl Talk played a hook from a song that kept repeating the phrase rebel rebel, anyone know where its from? Haha its not David Bowie.
-
I've been to a few recent shows where they did that; very nice.

the AC was thoughtful indeed. girl talk has really awakened my appetite for the energetic dance party. is there any regular event on the calendar, even at the mainstream clubs, where the energy is close to this?
