Assuming the average board member goes to about 15-20 shows a year, do any of you notice over the years having more trouble with your hearing? I mean, its inevitable that as you get older, everyone will suffer from some hearing loss but the regular show goer will have more pronounced effects. I've noticed lately in the past year or so having trouble hearing people and more and more having to ask people to repeat what they just said. I'm kinda worried. Maybe I should start wearing earplugs to shows.
-
I always wear earplugs to shows. After a show you can really tell the difference when everyone else is yelling and you are talking normal.
I have had tinnitus since I was 20, and still have pretty decent hearing (knock on wood...). Problem is there are situations that I can not wear plugs that are loud so that does cut in.
-
I now wear earplugs, though I forget them sometimes (I cannot stand the cheap foam ones, so if I don't have my nice ones, I use a napkin).
I have a constant ringing, but it doesn't bother me really (I've had it for 6-8 years). And I have pretty poor hearing in crowds in terms of hearing a person speak over a lot of background noise. I think it's show related...
-
I'm an earplug wearer as well. (Actually, didn't this topic come up a few months back?) It's really a good investment regardless of the number of shows you attend.
andy, I would suggest getting your hearing checked by a specialist just to be on the safer side of things and then yes, start wearing earplugs.
-
What did you say?
I lost some of my hearing in one of my ears as a child. I don't really know if I have any more than that, though my wife complains that I turn the tv up too loud.
I don't wear earplugs at shows, though ironically I'm hooked on wearing them when I sleep (had a college roommate who snored.)
-
i actually have two bags and I have a pair of earplugs for both bags that i just keep in there in their handy dandy carrying case. works nicely, since i used to always forget 'em.
-
I wear earplugs at most shows ever since an ugly incident where I lost my hearing for 4 days after seeing the Beastie Boys in 1992. I didn't wear my earplugs for PJ Harvey last night, and my ears didn't ring at all afterwards and today I can hear just fine. Depends on the show though...I always bring them along just in case. This year I will have seen close to 40 shows I think. Ear plugs are always a good thing to bring with to a show.
-
I always did poorly on the hearing tests when I was a kid. Blame it on getting ear infections every summer and one of my ear drums bursting.
I haven't had the ringing issue in a long time. Sometimes I get that "congested" feeling, but it's always gone by the morning.
I probably should wear earplugs but I don't.
-
I have always had bad hearing, probably should wear them, but dont
-
Ain't got no store-bought earplugs, but if a show (or a race) is loud I'll grab a bar napkin, tear off a couple strips and roll them up into ersatz plugs
-
on the topic of ears ... everyone should get their ear wax cleaned out at some point, either get a home kit or go to the doctor and get it done ... it's an unbelievable feeling, you can hear a pin drop two blocks down the street ... probably wouldnt be good to get that done before a show though ...
-
These are the ones I use. I never go to a show without 'em.

Those are the ones I bought as well. Haven't worn them yet. I look like an alien w/ those plastic stems sticking out of my ears. I carry earplugs wherever I go. Store bought ones (a brand a like) are slightly better than 9:30 club's offering. Although, the club's are still okay and I do appreciate that the club has them on hand.
A couple made fun of me as they watched me put in my earplugs at a very loud show. To each their own.
-
Interestingly enough, it was a 1992 Beastie Boys/Rollins Band/L7 show at Michael's Eighth Avenue that led me to start using ear plugs. It was a full week before my hearing was even close to normal. I have been using the foam kind until Bombay's shamelss plug for Etymotic. Now, I too am hooked. The music is not muffled with them as they can sometimes be with foam. I highly recommend.

I average 30 shows a year and never wear ear plugs. My ears ring constantly but I really only notice them it at night when I go to sleep, which is why I have to sleep with the fan on, It drains it just enough to fall asleep. I don't notice during the day unless I think about it, like right now, since I'm writing about it, I can hear it. Oh well......

Too bad they don't work so well when sleeping!

That's exactly what I have, and I go to sleep with the radio on.
I also got the Etymotic based on Chutney's advice and love them, when I remember them, which heppens more and more frequently...

Honestly many times I need that 30dB from the EAR plugs. Yeah you can tell that everything about 10kHz is gone, but they work well. I get the 3 packs from the drug store and keep the little case and put 2 pairs in. I have about 5 of these cases with two pairs scattered around in backpacks, my car, and around the house. Always ready with a pair or two of plugs.

If by unbelievable feeling, you mean the most excrutiating pain I have ever been through, then yes, have the doctor take the siringe, inject the warm water directly into the ear, right next to the ear drum (louder than any concert I've ever been to), behind the ear wax, stick tweezers in your ear and pull out an ungodly amount of ear wax. I'm talking chunks the size of crutons!!!! And I used to have to have it done often when I lived in DC because the ear canal constricts in cold weather and if there's too much wax, it's a crazy sharp pain in the head.
I've torn tendons in my ankle, broken my wrist, had numerous surgeries, even collapsed a lung and nothing hurt more than having my ear wax removed.
That being said, my hearing is fine on a daily basis, amazing after the removal process is done, and despite a long history of concerts, I've never worn ear plugs. Maybe I don't have to with all of the ear wax buildup?

I am -55 in my left ear..but I don't think it is from shows...

How far does that thing on the end stick out of your ears? Are these really worth the $12? I'm just wondering.

Have you ever met one of those hard-of-hearing elderly persons?
Now fast-forward yourself into that picture. Welcome to your future!

if anyone goes to any of the upcoming, J Mascis and the Fog show(s), please wear earplugs. I hate those things, really, but for the God known as J. Mascis, one MUST wear them. Him and Schools will blow the roof or of Black Cat. Yeah, baby!

I've noticed that following a loud show I have a faint but sharp ringing sound in my ear. But it usually subsides after a day or two.

really? i've had it done twice and its never hurt at all, they've also never used tweezers on me ... try this homeopathic shit, it's a candle you stick in your ear, light it, let it burn down, and it sucks the wax out of your ear into a tidy burrito-sized package ... tasty!

This year between shows I have already seen and what i have tix for the count is about 40 (just got another show booked tonight). BY FAR the loudest show I have ever seen is the Deftones. I could not hear at all for 24 hours and then for the next three days it was substantially limited. Haven't worn earplugs yet at a show but next Wednesday I may have to give it a try for the first time...

I've never seen J solo, but Dinosaur was by far the loudest band I've ever seen. Even if you don't normally wear earplugs, I'd recommend them for this one.

I go to about 50 shows annually and I've definitely noticed hearing loss.
I think it started as a teen when I used to crank up the stereo and play guitar/keys along with the albums. I mean, I REALLY cranked up the volume (my playing sounded MUCH better when music was louder than me ;) )
I know I should wear earplus but I find them uncomfortable. Same reasons I don't wear a full face shield or mouthguard when I play hockey. I'll eventually pay for my lack of judgement...

What?

wow...someone named j mascis posted that his hearing loss in the left ear was negative 55.
i wonder why j never plays nine thirty, and only black cat when his love transmissions shine down upon our city. maybe it's that homeless gentleman that yells, "black cat! . . .black cat!" all night long out front of the club. i love that guy. i make sure to give him a fiver when ever i see a show their. i wonder if he's still there; it's ben awhile since i ventured to 14th and s. maybe j likes "twin peaks", because the tile work in black cat is sort of similiar, with patterns leading you to the feeling that this club is gritty and big city catty, where girls with lisa lobe glasses and colours of dying hair sprouts, like to hang around on their tofu and bacon burritos.
j mascis is the musical representative of the hugging saint. yeah, baby! people from amhearst are nice. artsy, but nice. imagine a town comprised of nothing but corcoran school of art student named Voo, driving alfalfa romeos.

Who?
-
Walkonby, do you happen to know Tweaky?
-
I think that's the huffing pal Tweaky always told me about.
-
I'm talking chunks the size of crutons!!!! .

gross! hahahaha what do you do that you get so much build up? That's not human!
-
Why not give your money to a beggar who is missing arms or legs or something, instead of that lazy fuck?

You're telling me. I didn't know it was humanly possible either. Apparently, ear wax is naturally made by stuff in your ear (like skin and hair) and outside ingredients (like shampoo and water) and the ear canal is self-cleaning.
Supposedly, my ear canal doesn't clean itself properly, but they worked fine enough when I lived in warm weather, although as a surfer growing up, I had a lot of ear infections. When I moved to cold-weather DC, the ear canal became a source of problems, and they had to remove 20 some-odd years of earwax buildup from both ears. It was ridiculous. I'm telling you, I wouldn't have believed it if I had seen it all in the discharge bowl she was using - she even called the doctor in to review the contents. The doctor and nurse felt so badly for me after the first ear that they made me come back a few days later to do the other one, after applying three times the prescribed drops to loosen it all up.
I've had it done three time since the first time, and none have been as painful, but for me, it's never a walk in the park. I recommend the drops that loosen the crap up the night before you have the procedure, not the 20-30 minutes the doctors say is all that is needed.

never wear earplugs, for some reason, dc clubs don't seem as bad as pittsburgh. i was deaf for like 2 days after a built to spill show at the old rosebud. and i have seen mascis here, but with the solo acoustic thing he was doing for awhile. may have to get earplugs for that one. dinosaur jr was really freakin loud back in the day
-
j did tend to tone it down after dinosaur, then leading himself into an non-amped tour for awhile, which was awesome, thus leading himself into the Fog. Most of the shows i've seen were loud . . . way loud. ringing ears and everything. but j is so worth the blood and tears. now, with schools from widespread on bass, i've been told that the loudness factor will destroy you. that's destroy you.
rhett, i don't discrimahate. i give money to all people in tend, not just because others think they are lazy. and no, i don't know anyone named Trickster, though i do know alot of tricksters. who is the j mascis on the forum? that is what i want to know.
-
sorry, i meant Tweaky. I don't know him either.
-
i've always had ear problems growing up (i'm only 17). apparently, my ears don't pruduce lots of wax or any at that. i always got ear infections and had my adenoids removed when i was 4. i went to the features/kings of leon concert on the first of this month at the black cat and it was so fucking loud. i was screaming to my friend and she still could't hear me. i know i'll probably go deaf later in life. i listen to my music way too loud. a weird thing though, i hate when the tv is too loud. i cannot stand it. i never wear ear plugs to a show but i do wear them to bed.

Friend of Thirsty's.
They share lots of good buds together.
Thought that you would be one of them.

them? one who shares?
