Title: BRMC Roll Call
Post by: Arthwys on June 01, 2007, 11:50:00 am
I am psyched for this show as I've been trying to see them since the first album and no such luck.  Worst was when the damn hurricane isabelle hit and I opted out of not metro-ing in, only to find out the next day they did an amazing 3 hour set for the 3 score people that did show up.  Anyone know anything about the opener?

I saw that hurricane show (with a great opening set by the Warlocks, I think) and it was fantastic, but I don't remember it being overly long and certainly not 3 hours.

Not sure where you got 3 hours from, it was definitely good though.  I remember going over to Cafe Saint Ex afterwards and trying to dodge tree limbs and other debris. The Cobbs are decent, don't know much about the others.

I'm in. Missed their 2005 show, but I didn't really like Howl anyway, so didn't bother going. Baby 81 however, was a very different story.

im in! i saw them last night - and ill add my review that i posted elsewhere. no clue about any 3 hour set, but last night was 2 hours! and i have no voice thanks to it. oh apparently ive seen the other opener dead combo. a friend reminded me that they opened for the raveonettes, but since i have no memory of seeing them, ill assume it was mostly forgettable. and dont forget BRING YOUR EARPLUGS!

Well I have no voice anymore thanks to the lovely lads of BRMC.

Started out meeting some friends at a pub for some pints. Twas good, until I realized that we'd be missing the opener, whom I really wanted to see. Ah well. I hadn't eaten anything in awhile, so the buzz was fast approaching.

Anyway, caught the tail end of The Cobbs. I liked their stuff and they were sounding great live. No complaints. Much better than the songs I had heard online.

Around 9:10 or so, BRMC hits the stage. "Took out a Loan" is the first song. Guitars fill the room, with a big big sound. This is how I had wished the JAMC were. It was so f'ing loud with such energy. Robert and Peter are excellent on guitars and vocals. Each song would blend into the next with almost no breaks in between songs. Long drawn out spacey guitar jams were the absolute highlights of the show.

The set was near 2 hours long, with almost no breaks. One hell of an encore that included songs they had never before played live. With almost no talking between songs during their set, the encore had lots of chatter. Peter asked for requests which had 5 zillion songs being yelled out. They played Rifle along with a bunch of others.

The acoustic songs were nice and although Im not a fan of Howl, it was a great addition to their set.

New York proved to be a great audience. A sold-out show with fans who adore them. We were clearly there for the kind of show that they delivered.

Now the question is - can DC fans deliver and give them what they need. I'm afraid not, but some friends and i will be in the very front having a blast. so if youre in dc and coming to the show, dont be a stranger and come by and say hello.

and i recommend everyone to get out there if you can. as i said its not sold out, and they are expected on at 11:30.

 cheers,
 -r

That Hurricane Isabel show was awesome.  It wasn't extraordinarily long, but they definitely rewarded the few dozen souls who braved the weather by playing a lot looser with the songs.

I'll be at the show tomorrow.

The Post said their new album is fairly lame. But fairly lame is the new fun...

Fairly lame is fairly accurate.  Some bright spots, but as a whole it's kind of a snooze.

love the new album! and it sounds really great live. i think it gets better with each additional listen. i was walking down lex at lunch and saw a guy with a 'weapon of choice' shirt. brought a smile to my face.

Hmm, i checked out a couple of reviews online, and even though the shows are all supposed to be close to 2hrs, there's very little from the first album on the setlist, aside from the requisite 'Punk Song'. 'Rifles' gets included, but 'Love Burns','Red Eyes and Tears' and 'Spread Your Love' doesn't  make the cut.

OK, it's kind of an old album now, so on to 'Take Them On...'. I really do think it's a bit galling for them to not include 'Stop', 'US Government' or even 'We're all in Love' (which I hated, but still). Apparently, only In Like the Rose and a couple of other minor songs make it in.

The vast majority of the setlist appears to be from Baby 81 (they might just play the whole thing) and Howl. Which is disappointing. I like Baby 81, but overall it's pretty top-heavy, and was really looking forward to the live treatment of the their older stuff.

I agree with that assessment, I think most of the songs sound very similar unlike Howl which incorporated a variety of styles. I'm probably in the minority, but I think Howl was their best work.

I'm in and looking forward to my first show! Wonder if the parking lot will fill up. I still haven't decided if I will show up for the openers.

since when do you consult something as mainstream and sold-out as the Post for your musical opinions?!?  i thought you were all, like, indie... i would have guessed that the WaPo not liking it would amount to an endorsement in your books  :)

I saw the February 2006 show and won't miss another.  They are an incredible band in an increasingly barren landscape of rock and roll.  By the way, Howl was an excellent album and considering each album of theirs is very different it's hard to decide which is "the best".

eh, the more I like the main act, the more insufferable the opening acts seem.

The show wasn't bad, but I found it a bit flat.  Part of that may be that I am not so keen on the new material; but even the older stuff sounded uninspired.  All in all, not bad, but definitely not as good as the other times I have seen them.

i wish they'd played 'stop' and 'cold wind', but aside from that, i loved it. Thank God someone asked for 'love burns' and 'spread your love' during the encore.

I was thinking the exact opposite.

i thought it was a good gig, they seemed a bit tired which is understandable. i was really happy to hear red eyes and tears and promises was cool as well. not the best time i've seen them but i still had a blast! i enjoyed seeing the cobbs again and was fun to play on stage with the first band
here is the setlist i saw posted on brmc website
  <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v719/MissBlueLovesYou/d0f4fb598cb002c0023ec859fb5c7b6e.jpg" alt=" - " />
encore i think was Shuffle Your Feet, 6 Barrel Shotgun, Red Eyes and Tears, White Palms, Spread Your Love and Heart + Soul

hellooo.  I was there.  and I thought it was amazink, as per BRMC's usual.  Not their best show I've been to, but still rockin.  And how long was it, 2 hours or more?  I didn't look at the time.  How sweet of them to ask for requests and keep playing...Rob was apparently not eager to stop.  They are an awesome live band, in my opinion, and I live for their shows.  (It's been nearly a year since I went to a concert!)  It was a bit trippy, as I've seen all but 2 DC BRMC shows as well as elsewhere, and have ALWAYS stood smack in front of Robert, usually in the first or second row, and this time I was in front of Peter.  I have to say I prefer Robert's side, no offense Peter.  Old habits die hard, you know.

Personally, I have never been so Goddamn hot in my life.  My fault for not being able to control my own rockin-out.  Apologies to those who were around me.  The redhead with a ponytail in the second row..I'm sure if you were around me you Know Who I Was.

D...were you the fill-in keyboardist?  awesome!!!  can I have your autograph?  :D

Samantha...

So you were that girl rocking out something fierce a little to the right of center stage in the 2nd row?   With red hair?  I kept thinking how great it was to see someone that into the show, way to not be indie-cool whilst standing hands folded across chest!

 D.  you rocked up there...i'm sure i'll see you in some other queue somewhere soon.

Legendary?  DEAR GOD I hope not.  But I am from days gone by.

I finally got a desk job where I get to talk on message boards all day long!  So maybe I'll be visiting here more often...unfortunately I rarely go out to any concerts or listen to new music or anything, so I probably won't be able to contribute much.  I'm a huge loser, but that's good cause I like videogames too much.

And yes, I probably was that chick.  Red ponytail, black tunic, rockin the fuck out and overheated.  I would be embarrassed of my behaviour, but it was completely out of my power.  I wish I could blame it on drugs or alcohol, though.

where were you?  I didn't accidentally molest you or anything did I?

Hey Samantha, welcome back! Glad you enjoyed the show. Any idea what's up with Boby H and Plucky these days? I've kind of lost touch with them.I dropped off their egroup, too much spam. They seem to be extrememely silent these days except for Jasons local DJ gigs.

I was in a faded blue touring type cap and a "The Music" shirt down the front stationed in front of Peter. Cap came off after the Cobbs, too hot.  My rocking out is generally limited to some head bobs and perhaps a few fist pumps into the air when songs  like Rifles get played :-).

Last I saw, and this was about a year ago (haven't been keeping up w/ their news) the lead singer posted a really weird random song in a video of himself in the dark lit by blue light or something.  And he was bald.

we must have been near each other, then, Art.  I dunno if I saw you.  you didn't say if I molested you  :p

heya Sparx!  long time no see/talk!  Same with you, Doom.  Markie no longer frequents?  That's something I never would have expected  :p

The Warlocks got too big for their britches, and I lost interest.  I don't follow them anymore...in fact, the last show I saw of theirs, I left early.  Wasn't worth hanging around.

That's a shame. I kinda got the feeling Jason's head was swelling, just from his posts on the BJM board. As for Bobby, he always seemed so friendly and humble. For his sake, I hope he pulls it together. The man has incredible talent. Good to have you back among us. Hope all's going well for you.
