So who's on board to see the show that sold out the Royal Albert hall and got stellar reviews? Love with Arthur Lee are hitting the much smaller and intimate Birchmere bandstand tonight complete with the extra string and horn players to perform the classic "Forever Changes" record. Your gonna regret missing this one
-
I am listening right now, and it makes me really want to go to the show.
I think love will overcome apathy and lethargy.
-
I will be there! Is it definitely the band stand, then? The web site says it's in the Music Hall. What time are you planning on getting there?
-
Well they play at 7.30 and the music hall opens at 6.....
I am still not entirely certain if we are going, we dont have tickets either.....And the missus is being indecisive.
but I was hoping kosmo woul meet us at the nearest metro at around 6.15 or 6.30....
-
I'm going. Me and my friends are planning an early arrival so we can get a good spot. We're probably gonna eat chow at the club too and since it's a bandstand show there will be few tables, at least that's what I hear. Doors are at 6:00 I think.
-
we can certain shoot for 6:15 too... the traffic in this town drives me nuts!!!!
-
yikes i'm beginning to post like jaquar :D
-
which metro is it near, Jag?

to get to the birchmere, take the metro to braddock road. its less than 2.5 miles from that metro stop to the club. there is a bus you can take that goes right by the club. go to www.wmata.com (http://www.wmata.com) to map it out. likewise, its about a $7 cab ride with tip from the metro station to the birchmere. crystal city is furthur away, actually.
-
isn't Braddock past the club if you are coming from the North, it is pretty close to crystal city as well, you just go south on route 1, take a right on south glebe, by the dealership Mankie use to work at, and then left on Mount Vernon Avenue, and as you go down Mount Vernon the birchmere is on your left
-
from the direction i'm coming from braddock road appears to make the most sense, either way for me going to the birchmere involves crossing either one of those bridges thus entering into traffic hell.. let us know soon because i'll need to leave 5ish.
-
possibly. i've just found it easier when i've gone solo to head to that station and transfer to the bus or nab a cab if i've just missed the bus. but you might be right, the birchmere might be between the two stops considering its proximity to glebe rd and that its about halfway up and down on mt vernon.
-
I am going to try to get there around 6-6:15. I can also pick up at the metro if you need it. I know that bus 10B stops at Braddock Road metro and passes by the Birchmere. It runs every 20 mins. or so.

Thanks, but I think Kosmo got it covered....
I just hope it isnt sold out now...
-
Oh good. I'm glad you are all set. I will see you there -very soon!
-
Have fun! It should be spectacular..FC is one of my all time favorite records.
Alas, I have class at 8 tomorrow.
Kurosawa, Kos...I expect a full report.
-
i second that.
-
well just so this is not a complete "Love" fest, because where is the fun in that, I can't stand Forever Changes, and I will be at Lucero tonight
-

You said it....a great freaking show. Arthur sounded......he sounded fucking fantastic!
Although my buzz from this show is certainly shaved by news of E. Smith's passing.
-
agreed
-
That really was a great show. I had to keep pinching myself. I still find it hard to believe his voice is so good and that those songs could possibly sound better than they do on the recording.
Thanks for the push into going Kosmo and man who begins with M.
As it stands that is not vying for best show of the year, but best I have ever seen.
All you crazy people shoulda gone.
-
Great show! Singer with an amazing soulful voice, talented backing band with added tastful string and horn accompaniment. The nearly full Birchmere audience digging every minute of the show. Very few artists can so easily slip between garage rock raves up to songs that would make a belle and sebstaine fan tear up.
Love's classic "Forever Changes" should be required listening for all Echo and Bunnymen and Belle & Sebstaine fan. Hell "Forever Changes" is just required listening to anyone that considers themselves a serious rock fan. You can really hear Love influence in the guitar and bass lines of those great post-punk bands. Several members of Fugazi were spotted at the show.
I'd like to see Love again if only so that can rip through more of the pre "Forever Changes" songs. This band influcenced such 60's contemporaies as The Rolling Stones and The Doors.
Great show, so very glad I got a chance to see it in DC and in such an intimate setting.
-
I was sorry they didn't play "Signed DC". That, and the idiot behind me yelling "Little Red Book!" throughout the set were the only (minor) dissapointments.
When they finally did play Little Red Book he started yelling "Hey Joe!", which Arthur didn't even sing on the first Love album.
A great night. Our seats were great!

i think a fine system should be implemented for people who request "freebird" at any show other than a lynyrd skynyrd. it was funny the first i heard it in the 80's not so much anymore

Yeah I heard that guy too! What's sadder is he acutally got some chuckles from the audience.
-
It made me chuckle.
It was just such a silly heckle and something about its deliverey in amongst all the Love song requests, made it hilarious.

mike doughty has suggested that there be a law requiring the performer to play free bird anytime someone yells a request for it, just to get people to stop doing it. nobody really wants to hear that song.
he has also suggested that it's raining men should be the new free bird, and that any time you feel the urge to yell out free bird, you should yell it's raining men instead.
-
Yeah, great show. I felt as if I was transported back in time. Every song has a truly personal feel about it and when Arthur belted, "I want my freedom!" I got chills. The crowd was really into the show and that clearly affected the band. They played as if it was the last show on earth. A good time was had by all. You Set the Scene was my favorite song of the night.
The opening band was...well, how can I say it politely? Cringe-worthy in parts (hand-clapping anyone?) but with good vocals. Their synths HAVE to GO. I was relieved that their set was a short one.
Oh and Birchmere is a weird place but it really worked for this show.
-
:(
I don't know Love, but Kosmo and Kurosawa's recommendations (ah, make that effusive urgings) are enough for me. Alas, i've been swamped with work and in the midst of my organizations fall membership meeting, so I couldn't go to the Birchmere.
But I'll check 'em out, as it's apparently required listening.
-
Love is Arthur Lee's band from the late 60s. Sort of etherial Psychedelic without too much spaciness. In other words, the classic song structure doesn't get lost in all of the cool instrumentation. Very good. Unfortunately, I couldn't go either. Not a choice I wanted to make.
-
my recommendation is to buy...
<img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000346Y.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" alt=" - " />
it's a retrospective of the classic early love songs plus the entire forever changes record

Yeah yeah...the opening band....How about that song about Canada! What the hell was that thing the singer ran offstage to get? A Canadian harmonica? Truly a bizzarre band. My friends and I are still trying to figure out what was going on with that group. I was very dis-pleased with The Pleased.
-
that would be a Melodica, its a Harmonica with a keyboad. Ben Folds uses one.

Yes that's the offending instrument. While I'm not a Ben Folds fan I'm sure he makes better use of it than the guy from The Pleased. It was truly a strange moment.
I quess there'a at least something to be said for the fact that I remember the tune and words of the chorus....2 days later and it's still burned in my brain.
Oh Canada..won't you please...take us over...
-
I thought Clinic used a Harmonium, or do they use both.
-
the harmonium is the indian version of a accordian

Ok, I thought the Harmonium was something else, but they use both apparently -
We're promised no less than "more extremes of bubblegum/weirdness...with added harmonium, afuche, tables and an effects-driven hint of Professor Longhair."
