On October 15, Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart appeared on CNN's Crossfire.
If you missed it, you can watch it here (http://mediamatters.org/static/video/crossfire-20041015.wmv), but I uh, I would go to the bathroom first.

Within minutes of my post, Media Matters took it down "temporarily". I'm guessing CNN didn't like them having a copy of it.
You may read the transcript though:

Jon Stewart, Again in the Crossfire
By Lisa de Moraes

The left and the right on CNN's "Crossfire" finally have found something they can come together on.
Both sides hate "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart.
Round 2 of "Crossfire" vs. Jon Stewart:
On Friday, you'll recall, the Comedy Central late-night star appeared on CNN's afternoon screamfest, ostensibly to promote "America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction."
Instead, to the surprise of hosts Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala, Stewart blasted the show and the two men personally, calling them "partisan hacks" who "have a responsibility to the public discourse" but "fail miserably."
Carlson, who also has a public policy show on PBS, responded by calling Stewart the personal "butt boy" of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. (Note to self: Call PBS chief Pat Mitchell to chat.)
Stewart, not to be outdone, called Carlson a part of the anatomy unique to men.
By yesterday afternoon, both sides had had three days to figure out how to spin it, and damage control began in earnest.
At the end of "Crossfire," Robert Novak on the right and James Carville on the left said they'd received loads of comments from viewers about the Friday telecast. They read two of the messages.
The first, from Toronto, said Stewart's appearance confirmed his suspicions: "Jon Stewart is the most overrated, overhyped comedian in the world today."
The second viewer comment -- because "Crossfire" is about presenting both sides of an issue -- thanked "Crossfire" for "having the guts" to let someone like Stewart speak.
After that, Novak did what the show is supposed to do: present opposing points of view.
"Let me say something about Jon Stewart. I don't think he's funny. And I know he's uninformed," Novak said, peering meaningfully at the audience.
"I think he's funny," said Carville. "I just think he's a pompous ass."
He continued: "Attacking Ted Koppel -- why would you want to attack somebody that's been in this business this long?"
He was referring to a squabble that broke out when Koppel interviewed Stewart on "Nightline" during the Democratic National Convention, and said how uncomfortable he was that so many people got their news from Stewart's show, as if anybody cared. The interview ended when Koppel cut Stewart off, saying he was through with him. Koppel appeared at a later date on "The Daily Show" and both men insisted it was much ado about nothing and that they were really quite chummy.
Interesting that Carville chose to discuss that bit of ancient history, instead of, say, Stewart's long-standing hatred of Novak.
Back in September, Stewart awarded Novak the "Congressional Medal of Douche Bag" for having first published the name of a CIA operative.
Getting back to "Crossfire": In response to Carville's sort of rhetorical question, Novak fell back on "because he's ill-informed," while casting a meaningful look. He never did explain what he was talking about.
Meanwhile, Stewart used the Martin Lawrence defense when telling his adoring audience why he did what he did on "Crossfire."
"Let's face it, I was dehydrated," he said, adding, "I had always in the past mentioned to friends and people I meet on the street that I think the show blows. I thought it was only the right thing to do to go say it to them personally on their program.
"Here's the thing about confronting someone on their show. They're there.
"Uncomfortable!"
But, in fairness, Stewart admitted that the "Crossfire" gang had come back at him pretty strong.
"They said I wasn't being funny. And I said to them, 'I know that, but tomorrow I will go back to being funny, and your show will still blow.' "

Man, Jon Stewart is funny! I like the part when he remarks about Tucker's bowtie. What a tool Carlson is!

Out of context, one might think that was mean.
Of course, when you first show the attack Novak laid on Dan Rather for not revealing his source of those papers about GW in the Air National Guard, then showing Novak, just months earlier, adamantly refusing to reveal his White House source for revealing the CIA operative's name, well then I think the Douche Bag award was going a bit soft on Mr. Novak.

My apologies. I've been working on putting a cover sheet on my TSR reports for some time now, but I clearly missed the memo.
I have been avoiding most of the threads on the election for a while now and feared that it was up there somewhere.
Hey everybody, go read Kosmo's post about the same topic! He posted it days before I did! It's my way to be, how do they say it, casually late?

'Daily Show' book too racy for Wal-Mart
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) -- Wal-Mart canceled an order for a best-selling book by Jon Stewart and the writers of "The Daily Show" after executives learned that it contained a photo of nine naked, aged bodies, each with the superimposed head of a Supreme Court justice.
"America (The Book)," a mock school text that lampoons the American government in much the same way the Comedy Central show spoofs the news, includes cutouts of the justices' robes and a caption asking readers to "restore their dignity by matching each justice with his or her respective robe."
Executives for the Bentonville-based retail giant deemed the book inappropriate for its shelves this week.
"We were not aware of the image that was in the book (when Wal-Mart ordered it) and we felt the majority of our customers would not be comfortable with it," said Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokeswoman Karen Burk. "We offer what we think our customers want to buy. That just makes good business sense."
Jamie Raab, a publisher for Warner Books, which produced "America," said the naked justice joke fits perfectly with the book's theme.
"It's not gratuitous and it's very much in tune with the rest of the book," Raab said. "It's funny, yet to the point. When you undress the Supreme Court justices, they're just men and women and you have to judge them on who they are and what they do. It makes you look and think and laugh."
Raab said she doesn't fault Wal-Mart for its decision, but added that she didn't see the point in banning something that isn't intentionally sexually explicit.
Wal-Mart has a well-known policy of refusing to carry magazines with racy covers or CDs with explicit lyrics.
The chain is offering the book on its Web site. Burk said the store's online customers are a "different audience" and that the company wanted to give an option to people looking to buy the book from Wal-Mart.

if you are a comedian and you go on crossfire, how can you not rip into tucker carlson? maher is really the only compition on tv right now.
-
Jon Stewart may be my new hero along with Maher.
However, Maher didn't lay into Carlson that much when he had the chance on Real Time a few weeks ago.
-
Anyone see Stewart on "60 Minutes" last night? Man, that guy is just good, regardless of venue.
-
good at being a smartass. smartasses come a dime a dozen these days.

I disagree, Stewart is not just a smart ass. He comes off as intelligent and well-reasoned. Maher is just a smart ass.
-
He seems to be holding up rather well given the recent incarceration of his mother...

I disagree. Maher may come off more of a smart ass, and even more mean in some cases. But he is just as reasoned and intelligent.

I worked at Crossfire in 1989. ....Don't ask, I was young. It was the political equivalent of professional wrestling then. It still is now.
If you go to Crossfire for news, you won't find any. You might find any. You might hear a good partisan riff or two. That's about it, cuz its theater.
John Stewart's show is theater, too, but its SUPPOSED TO BE. Therein lies the difference. Do I wish he'd skewer all sides equally? Yes, but only because he'd avoid the partisan yammering.
-
Marr is neither reasoned nor intelligent. Stewart show, Like Crossfire, is meant to entertainingly present the news. How many people actually get there news (as a first source) from Crossfire? Its not intended to be the first stop for "fair and balanced" news...like say FOX's actual news broadcasts. Stewart should lighten up. His criticism is well taken though, I mean he's one of what 10 people nationally who watch the damn show. They'd be well served by keeping Stewart happy.
-
Marr is nothing without Morrissey.
And vice versa.

BOO SMITHS!! YEAH KILLS!!!

So, speaking of the Smiths, I had the most lovely night at the Blue Room last night, completely enveloped by the comforting, warbly tones of Morrissey. Though it was sad that it was the last night for the Medusa/Strange night at Blue, what a way to go. Luckily I was near the back of the newly designed 2nd floor bar, as I crooned nearly every word to most of the songs. Bliss, I tell you, bliss.
Thanks DJ Medusa and DJ Strange!!!
