Watching my living room change from an icky beige to a sublime slate. And the Sopranos finale if I can find something who will let me leech off of their HBO for a night.

Maybe Califone.

Maybe someday!
The picnic is for the birthing center where we're having our baby.
The bbq is at a friend's house.
The grilling is at another friend's house.
Hope Celeste doesn't go into labor before it all goes down!

Oh man, I just realized Hostel 2 comes out tonight. I may have to catch that this weekend. The first one is one of only a few movies that had gore that actually made me cringe. Shiver!

A picnic in WV for our friends who were married by Elvis in Vegas a few months ago. It promises to be a drunken, fabulous time.

good memory. the veils were AWESOME. i read somethign about the lead singer being out of control, and that didnt describe it. i thought he was going to tear up the stage by the second song. mic stands flying across the stage, thought for sure guitars would be flying too. they sounded really great, and the lead singer has an amazing voice. it was their second of two shows that night (the late show), and around 1am they stopped playing (the bassist - this cute chick) was tired of playing. so they just left.
i really recommend checking them out. the drummer (another chick) was really talented too. all the members of the band were really great, and everyone was way into their music. there must be a joke about bon jovi because the keys guy who was right in front of me (wearing a skid row shirt no less) kept telling us theyd play a bon jovi song. but it didnt happen.
so loved them, i only wish i could see them again and that they'd have played longer. if they havent yet played dc, do yourself a favor and DONT miss them! :)

Clarendon Ballroom tonite for a birthday.
Grand opening of Circle Boutique and Tabaq Saturday.
Orioles vs Rockies Sunday - Cal bobbleheads!

I do not see how a picnic and a bbq would lead to an interrogation, but what you do with your time is not for me to judge.

hahaha now thats forward. sucks that you missed the long blondes show. but did you miss the veils show too?
and which ticket do you wanna buy off of me? LOL. i have tickets to so many shows. if youre referring to tomorrow night's show at the bowery, thatd be a no way in hell. im getting together with about 5-6 friends (if not more) and planning a dinner then going to the SOLD-OUT show :) so that'd be a no can do.
and if you ever are in the city - definitely let me know. im good for hospitality, assuming i dont have other company. if you buy me brunch, its even better and/or a concert ticket is WAY better :p

Did anyone else go to Sea and Cake last night?
I was quite surprised that they played Jacking the Ball!
How was Califone?

anyone going to Architecture in Helsinki tonight at the club? i would have thought that they'd generate a little buzz on this forum, hipsters that y'all are. i haven't heard their latest album, apprently it's been leaked though.
-
If I go out tonight, it would be Electrelane at the Black Cat :) AiH are good to see once a year, but already saw them couple months ago at the BC. I think they tour a lot now because they live in Brooklyn now??

has anyone heard/has an opinion of the openers, Black Moth Super Rainbow & Santogold? worth catching?

black moth super rainbow is really good, at least on record. i'd think it'd translate well live. lots of vocoder and mellotron. they will be much better than AiH, who blow goats. the best combo would be to check out BMSR then electrelane at the black cat, or even ladybug transistor at dc9.
-
looks like i'm not going out tonight after all... some work popped up, dinner isn't cooked yet, and it's going to be a packed week at the office so best if i start it off with a good night's sleep. so it'll be a music performance free weekend for me. well, not entirely, i did dance to dimitri from paris last night at club five. i hadn't listened to house in a while so it was good to go shake my thang. dimitri was on, music was funky but the crowd was meh. frat boys in baseball jerseys and flip flops... so fabu (ok, there were only two, but still)

so, who went to the veils last night? thoughts?
i bagged it and checked out the "jesus lizard live" movie at the BC. great movie, recommended. the interview at the end was so aweful it was entertaining.

I was there -- it was a stunning, absolute corker of a show! The fact that they went on after 11:30 on a Monday night aside, I think it could have only been improved if the 5-piece band would have been given a proper stage to perform on instead of that postage stamp. They played about 8 songs off the new album, 2 brand new songs, but only 1 track off the 1st album (Wild Son). Finn's vocals were as good live, perhaps better, than on record and the band was super-tight (special props to the 2nd guitarist). I was prepared to be disappointed, but the sound was actually pretty decent for the bulk of the show. The crowd seemed to be impressed even though I think many of them were holdovers from seeing the dreadful but aptly-named opening band, the Comas.
They said that they would be in the States and in Canada for the next 4 months and that there was a possibility that would be back. I would love to seem them a 2nd time in a better venue.

Shit...sad I missed it then (although have seen them play it before). How was the show overall?

Way better than the last Sea & Cake show I saw (2003) with Califone. John McEntire is still a joy to watch - love his facial expression! He's very much into his drumming!@ "Jacking the Ball" was a treat, but the real treat was "The Argument".(rocked way harder than the album version!). The Zincs were pretty good as well. Excellent musicians. Loney, Dear = not really my cup of tea. Just too much harmonizing...

great review... although im a bit confused on the 11:30 pm comment on a monday. I saw them on a double-show lineup at the mercury. 2 shows back to back. the 2nd show was way late, but was one hell of an awesome set. and it seems like they'll definitely be back to NYC. and finn was sounding excellent. id definitely be seeing them again if they come around.
ok off to times square.. f'ing happy mondays had to cancel their show. sooooooooo bummed! :(

The Veils only played one set but there were two opening bands and the 2nd band didn't finish until after 11pm.

were the openers any good? I saw The Phoenix Foundation and they were quite good. I know there was a different opener for the first set.

Openers were Zulu Pearls & the Comas. I didn't catch the first band but having heard almost all of the Comas' set, I found them to be silly, inane and couldn't wait for their set to be finished.

doh! i knew the comas opened up. cant stand them. i had to watch them open up for hard-fi last year (or maybe the year before) and wished i hadnt :)

"Escort" is the song that would get me if I ever saw it live.
