Title: TV on the Radio 10/17?
Post by: lionforce5 on August 11, 2004, 03:01:00 pm
Just saw this on the TVotR website:

 "10/17 Sun, Washington DC
9:30 Club w/ The Faint, Beep Beep "

I'll be looking forward to it...

The Faint's new album is fantastic.

They're also (as posted in the Pixies thread) opening one of the Pixies shows a DAR.

I've never heard these guys.  Comparisons?  What are they like?

I might be off with this, but I'd say a soulman fronting the Pixies is a good description.  Thirsty, walkie, am I too far off?

EDIT: Just to clarify, that's a very very good thing, IMO.

I have no idea how to categorize them.  Their current single "Staring at the Sun" blends heavy distorted bass and guitars with 4 on the floor house style drum machine beats and rich vocals.  One of their songs is a straight doo-wop acappella, and I believe the song "Dreams" was featured in the film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (I'm going from memory on that).  They're one of the most interesting bands I've heard lately.  Check out their website here. (http://www.tvontheradio.com)

EDIT: Or, you can check out an MP3 of "Dreams" and the video for "Staring at the Sun" at the Touch and Go Records website here (http://www.tgrec.com).

It's hard to describe TV on the Radio.  In some ways they embrace The Pixies minimalism, but then they totally pummel you with driving bass, electronic drum beats, and massive guitar distortion.  On top of all of this is the guitarist hitting Curtis Mayfield highs while the singer belts out Peter Gabriel's tenor.

So, Chaz, if you were to check out TV on the Radio, I highly suggest the Young Liars EP.

Thanks so much, j_lee.  I've seen the "staring at the sun" video many times, but haven't heard other songs (that I know of).  Though hearing Dreams, I have heard it before...so very drummy Peter Gabriel...

I'm planning to hit this show...

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure I saw the Faint listed as headliners for that tour. Quite honestly, they are quite a bigger draw than TVoTR I think, though I quite like them both.

TVoTR have gotten a whole lot of good press lately and the hype is high now amongst the fans. Wouldn't doubt it at all if they headline and bet they would pull in more people. However, I too know that I read that The Faint were headlining.

I would describe them as being New York Indie Soul...even though I don't know where they are from.

I saw TV on the Radio about a year ago up in baltimore opening up for Firewater....and I thought they were pretty amazing - way different than the ep/album sounds.  No electronic drums/synths at all...full band.
