What are everyone's favorite music documentaries? Having just seen Dig, I am in the mood to rent a few I might have missed.
-
1991 The Year Punk Broke. Excellent doc of a European tour involving Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr., and Babes in Toyland. Cameo with The Ramones.
-
the decline of western civilization parts 1 and 2.
of course, you can't miss spinal tap. :)

i hope their verison of "word up" is better than the korn version. i had to hear that song every day for 5 weeks. i don't think i'll ever get it out of my head.

That sounds awful. I'm sorry. Perhaps I should rephrase my sentence. The Ramones make an appearance in the doc.

Anyone remember this classic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082226/)?
-
My candidates are:
Benjamin Smoke (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0233315/)
Jandek on Corwood (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381287/)
For all you eccentric songwriter fetishists.

Another State of Mind, featuring Social Distortion
-
instrument, songs for cassevettes
-
Didn't they make a movie about Wilco? How about GBV?
-
I saw good documentaries on Shaun Ryder and Shane McGowan recently - they aired on Brit tv
also a good Undertones one avail at amazon
-
Unprecedented, Uncovered, Outfoxed, and Unconstitutional. Oh music docs wanted :D
The Unconstitutional DVD arrived in a plain brown wrapper today, I should be sufficiently indignant later tonight.
-
Anyone seen Live Forever?

-
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart -Wilco
Gigantic - They Might Be Giants
Don't Look Back - Dylan
Meeting People is Easy - Radiohead

Moog
Good concert movies...
Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads
Dirty Old Town - Ted Leo
Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
A Hard Day's Night - Beatles (kind of a concert)
The Beatles First U.S. Visit is fun to watch
Also...all the Beatles anthologies are out now on DVD

It's ok...much better to see him live. It would have been better if it had him playing in a club instead of at Siren Fest and it's a little on the short side. More of a concert movie than a doc.

<~~~~~~~~ indignant.
Watching Unconstitutional really makes me wonder what road the Bush Administration has lead us down. The Patriot Act tramples all over the Constitution. And hearing the Bush machine do thier message buzzword repeat bs, just riles me.
I'm glad to see the Librarians and others stand up to the Patroit Act.

"Vinyl" by Alan Zweig, about obsessive record collectors
-
YYY's "Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow" - there's a blurb on it in Express. It includes 16 tracks from a performance at the Fillmore in SanFran, 6 bonus songs, an artsy Japanese tour documentary and a collection of music videos.
-
Spinal Tap??
-
Scratch. It is a great history of Hip Hop.
Urgh A Music War is quite good too. How about the Clash Rude Boy? Sure it is a movie, but it works better as a documentary about the Clash at that time.
For movies with faux bands that read like documentaries, of course there is "This is Spinal Tap", but also "Breaking Glass".
