betty, you just posted a roll call for a concert happening a mere 24 hours earlier. i think smackie is well within the accepted time frame to post this.
i will probably be there. i would definitely be there if the ponys were opening, as they were on a few of the other dates. i have zero interest in the two openers, sunday night ... we'll see.
-
There.
-
front. center.
-
I'm seeing them tonight in Philly, mostly because I'd rather see Gil Mantera's Party Dream than The Rogers Sisters.
-
nope the high dials get my affection sunday night...
-
Yep.
-
I'm going as well....
Maybe Red Room beforehand, say 9:00, 9:30? (I figure Rogers Sisters will go on about 10)
Hey Betty -- Smackie's in from San Fran, you can't blame him for being SO excited to see some friendly loon faces. ;)
-
I'll be at Neko Case instead. I'm still not sure I like Art Brut all that much actually.

I saw them at the Northsix in Brooklyn last November and Philly last night. They really put on an amazingly fun show.
-
i'm there.
-
I'll probably be thurr.
-
i just bought my ticket. i'm up to meet a few board members. so where's the spot?
-
Shit, is it sold out? It says none are available through ticketmaster...
I'm hoping I can buy them at the door..?
-
You can't miss me tonight - Angels cap, "Free Marissa" t-shirt and a Social D jacket. Come up and introduce yourself.
-
Sorry to miss out on Mr. Vansmack Goes to Washington. My L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs are none too happy with my inflicting two shows and one all-night poker game on them over the last three nights.
Hopefully you'll give me a raincheck for one of my left coast visits later this year.
-
Hahaha, that show was so much fun. "Art Brut, are you ready?!"
The first opening band sounded really good too, but I only caught their last few songs.
What did you guys think of the show?
-
"READY, ART BRUT!?"
I think it's my new morning chant! Wake up, stand, "READY, ART BRUT!?"
Great show, they are a band having fun. Not sure about their longevity -- it was a lot of the same sound, but for a few minutes shy of an hour, that sound was a blast.
-
that show was so much fun in every way. they were massively entertaining.
-
Great, great show...I had to drag my ass there on a Sunday night, but had a hell of a time.
They were incredibly entertaining.
I knew Eddie would be great, but was surprised at how good the band was.
-
it was a good time. even before i saw ian svenonius walking around and the lead singer of art brut mentioned both nation of ulysses and the make up, i felt like it was very similar to a show by the make up. in that you know you are witnessing something utterly ridiculous and sometimes hilarious, and it really shouldn't be working, but the band is tight and the songs are really good and the lead singer has charisma to spare and it just clicks.
agree w/bags on the longetivity thing, though. not sure where they can go from here, although it seems like they might be talented enough to pull something off that's a lot less shticky.
-
best moment of the performance:
when he used the microphone cord as a jump rope.
frickin' genius!
-
Ready Art Brut??.....GO!!!
I enjoyed it so much, I'm growing a moustache.
I think my favorite part was the disappearance into the crowd and ending up back on stage. That or when he hung the mic over the rail and sang into it from below. I also enjoyed the top of the pops banter.
Sal and Bombay, pleasure meeting you both as well.

Sorry about not getting back to you - I posted this and then the board crapped out. I hopped on a plane, and wasn't able to check again until a couple hours before the show.
-
no worries, I majorly wimped out last night, despite there being three shows that I wanted to see, all of which turned out to be good shows
then again, it was nice to spend a quite Sunday evening in w/ my honey - life has been a little too hectic lately!

That's funny.
Smackette and I have to come to DC to spend any quality time together. Life has been hectic in SF too. That's why we motivated and went to the show - why not, we're on vacation was the attitude! A good choice too.
-
One last thought.
As I continue to salvage whatever is left of my lungs in Tryst this morning, that smoking ban can't come soon enough in this town. Just awful.

Yeah, I was wishing it had been a Saturday night show...would have been fun to have a few more beers and stay out after the show, riding on the high energy vibe. Kinda sucked to go home and try to get right to sleep, prepping for another Monday at work.
-
That was the best show I've seen in quite some time. I agree it was hard to go home and go to bed after that.
Here are some pics if anyone wants to see them:

I'll be at the Ottobar show tonight. How were the openers?

Loving the moustache, the dimple and the Dave Grohl teeth. ;)
Wonder what they sound like. Who's got a good audio link for me? Or should I just MySpace them?

you too. i'll be sure to get in touch if my SF plan pans out.
fun show. wouldn't mind catching their set again at coachella.
-
Ridiculously entertaining and entertainingly ridiculous.
LOVED it.
One of the best shows I've seen all year.
-
the Art Brut CD remains only available as an import, it's listed as coming out in here in May at Amazon. however, it's been available as an eMusic download since May of last year. not that i keep track of such things :D
-
I'm surprised everybody thought the show was so great. I thought it was pretty good, but there was an aura of fakeness about Eddie. It didn't seem to me like he was really that into it; he was just acting like he was. My buddy had the same reaction. Maybe it was because he was too sober like he said. Or, maybe it was because I was expecting too much as I love just about every song on that album. Or, maybe it was all another part of the elaborate ploy to make fun of pop bands. Anybody else notice this?
I, however, did have a great time, and was very impressed with the talent of the band.

You definitely have to check out the Robocop Kraus. They were awesome. The lead singer is hilarious, and definitely very into it. You just have to see it.
The Rogers sisters I thought were ok musically. But, they definitely weren't attempting to get the crowd involved, and were too focused on themselves. It was like they were at odds with the crowd without giving them a chance to dig the music. They just sort of played a few songs and left. Very forgettable.
-
i don't remember the last time i was smiling through an entire show

Thanks, but it looks like Robocop Kraus isn't on the Ottobar bill. It's Baby Aspirin instead.

You can also get it from cdwow (http://www5.cd-wow.com/). Free shipping, 8.75 GBP, which probably works out to be alot cheaper than getting it on import elsewhere...

i saw them last week at the bowery. just was curious if they ended up playing with a setlist. one of the highlights of that show was eddie decided that there'd be no set list for that night, so it was just everyone yelling out the songs. eddie got mad at one point, and said he was going to play what he wants.
now its time for everyone to go form their own art brut band. :) by far, it was one of the best shows i had seen. the band was so energetic, and i love the update to emily kane. "and i know now, im not in love with emily kane, im in love with the idea of being in love with love". oh how he went on. great show! glad to feel the love for them in DC. btw, there are now over 150 art brut bands - one in west virginia no less and an israeli one! woohoo! :D
-
Oh, that's great to read that obviously everyone loves them. I went to one of their shows in Germany and they were sooooo great. Eddie is just so cool, doesn't matter to me if it is fake or not.
-
I picked up the CD on insound...they're usually pretty goo.
-
Well, that was pretty fucking awesome. That was the most fun I've had at a show since The Pogues. I'll definitely be catching their set at Pitchfork, if I go...

Art Brut
"I can't stand the sound/of the Velvet Underground," Art Brut's Eddie Argos proclaims in the cheekiest couplet of the London quintet's cheeky theme song, "Bang Bang Rock & Roll." Actually, Art Brut could not exist without the sensibility, if not the sound, of the Velvets' college-educated garage rock. Sunday night at the Black Cat, drummer Mikey B. even played standing up, in apparent homage to the V.U.'s Maureen Tucker.
The crux of Art Brut's appeal is Argos's mocking lyrics, so at first it seemed problematic that the instruments overwhelmed the vocals. The group's founding manifesto, "Formed a Band," was a noisy blur, and only a few numbers -- notably "Emily Kane," an ode to absurdly unrequited love -- were sufficiently melodic to withstand the assault. But it quickly became clear that everyone in the packed room knew all the words (even though the band's debut album won't be released in the United States until May 23). This freed the singer for other things, and the result was engaging, amusing and -- especially by the standards of British art-rockers -- refreshingly unscripted.
Because he didn't have to sell the songs, Argos put most of his energy into asides. Sporting an earring and a way-uncool mustache, the singer admitted to realizing he's no longer in love with childhood flame Emily Kane, did a quick a cappella survey of California standards to conclude "Moving to L.A." and led a chant of "Art Brut! Top of the Pops!" that expanded to include the evening's opening acts and a number of D.C. bands, Fugazi and Nation of Ulysses among them. On its album, Art Brut may seem a bit smug, but onstage the band was playful and unexpectedly generous.
The Rogers Sisters, the Brooklyn trio that preceded Art Brut, played the sort of punk-funk for which their borough's indie-rock scene is now a little too well known. The band's grooves were formidable, but -- aside from swooping backup vocals that recalled the B-52s -- its sense of style was confining.

Kind of late responding here, but this pretty much sums up my thoughts on the night. It was hard not to get caught up in the fun and raucousness of it all. Great, catchy music and a really fun show to just watch - much less listen to.
They're probably just a flash-in-the-pan, but who cares. They pretty much kicked ass for a good hour. I definitely got my money's worth.
All that AND I got to meet Mr & Mrs. vansmack. Not a bad Sunday at all. :)
-
it would be greated to see Art Brut or even Mitch "ESLCN" Benn added to the Arctic Monkey bill... it would be worth it to watch the crowds reaction to seeing the headliners being mocked... The Cribs vs Art Brut would a fun pairing as well..

There was a set list at the Black Cat show.
