Post by: markie on October 23, 2003, 11:29:00 am
So who is going to Travis tonight. I am looking forward to my dose of bland over sincere Scottish rock.

Yeah, I hear Fran's now romatically happy, so on the new record he sings about other stuff. Has anyone seen the video for 'Re-Offender'? The song's about domestic abuse. On the video, the band plays gigs at hole-in-the-wall pubs and beat each other up in between gigs. Regardless of reviews, I'll end up picking the new CD in time.

Travis in NY:

 October 23, 2003
 ROCK REVIEW | 'TRAVIS'
Beyond Love, but Coming From the Heart
 By JON PARELES

Sooner or later self-absorption has its limits. Travis, a Scottish band that started a two-night stand at the Beacon Theater on Tuesday night, has become one of Britain's most popular bands with songs that magnify lovesick pleas into grand anthems. Most of the time Fran Healy, Travis's songwriter, sang about loneliness and the loves who got away. But on Travis's new album, "12 Memories" (Epic/Independiente), Mr. Healy has started to look beyond private troubles to public affairs, in one more unexpected pop repercussion of the campaign against terrorism and the invasion of Iraq.

"You don't need an invitation to drop in upon a nation," he sang in "The Beautiful Occupation," continuing, "So much for an intervention/Don't call the united nations." But before he sang it, he took pains to tell the audience that the song was personal, not political. "We've always written from our hearts," he said. "We've always just written about things that, you know, you just feel compelled to express."

Such unabashed earnestness makes Travis stand out in a pop sphere full of image mongering and mixed messages. The band is almost defensive about professing sincerity; its posture is that it has no pose. And as its audiences have grown, the challenge has been to make modesty ring out on an ever larger scale.

To do that Travis uses reliable models. The songs have the old-fashioned gift of melody, and the band is steeped in 1960's rock, mining the Beatles above all for harmonies, arrangements and a music-hall bounce. But it also draws on U2 for tolling guitars and huge vocal crescendos. The songs built to inexorable peaks as Mr. Healy sang plaints like the one in "Re-Offender": "You say you love me, and then you do it again." But the music didn't linger at its crests. It tapered off as if any sustained outburst was unseemly.

The songs were waltzes, Merseybeat bounces and grand ballads, with melodies that rose to Mr. Healy's vulnerable falsetto. Near the end Travis played an early song, "All I Wanna Do Is Rock," a slow stomp that gave Andy Dunlop a chance to climb onto his amplifier and swing his guitar for feedback. But he climbed down so the song could end quietly.

More than it wants to rock, Travis wants to bemoan troubles, offer consolation and now and then consider the state of the world.

That was cool.  Generally I don't click on Dupek's links.  Who knows what I've been missing....

GGW is running a marathon but he hasn't given up the Devil's weed.  In fact, I  find that if I suck one down at around the 19th mile, it gives me a boost for the last leg of the race.

so what was everyone's take on the show?

i'd like to think we were all in agreement regarding rooney: CRAP

the lead singer looks like steve perry from journey, the drummer looks like what's his name drummer from def leppard, but with arms, and the bassist looks like the guy from elo.

and as bunnyman deftly pointed out, the 1976 look and sound needs to go. NOW.

tad frightening that they seemed to have a solid fan base, and lots of screaming girls.

i thought travis was great. they always put me in a good mood. though that peace the fuck out song was pretty crap. and i didn't really need the overproduction of the show. just them and their music works for me.

bunnyman and i waited outside for an hour and a half to meet them. everyone but fran came out. i was too damn cold so i left. a tshirt and flip flops can't really tolerate that long a period in 40 degree weather. but they have really nice roadies who grabbed a random set list for me and then called over the bouncer to come find me and give it to me.  :)

rooney, maroon 5 aka kara's flowers, and phantom planet are all part of the hollywood brat rocker system.  it's real tough breaking into the system when your already connected.  before maroon 5 became some sort of jamarquoi tribute band, they were kara's flowers who went from suit wearing power popsters, to t-shirt wearing hootie clones.  the last kara's flowers demo disk i heard they had recast themselves as billy joel.  good thing they didn't have to work for a living or anything...

I thought the show was good...not phenomenal, but solid. The highlights for me were definitely "As You Are", "Driftwood", and "All I Wanna Do Is Rock".  I was really surprised they only did 3 songs off The Invisible Band...thought that they would at least do "Pipe Dreams".  And Poorlulu and I agreed that it would have been really nice to hear stuff like "Tied to the 90's", "Good Feeling" and even "Happy".  I also love "U16 Girls", but I suppose they can't play EVERYTHING.  However, if they had squeezed in an extra 15 minutes they could have thrown in a couple more oldies. Some of the new stuff is good, but some of it is just a bit too morose for me...I love it when Travis just rocks out and has fun.  But they are truly some of the nicest people, especially Dougie. He commented on my Red House Painters t-shirt and we got into a discussion about them.  He's a heck of a nice guy.  All in all, a VERY fun evening.

In the past they'd always done a cool cover during the encore, too.  "Baby One More Time", "The Weight", "All The Young Dudes"...

A few too many tunes off the new record (which hasn't really sunk in with me yet), but I guess that's to be expected.

P.S. I didn't think Rooney was  that bad....
Title: Re: Why does it always rain on me?
Post by: bearman🐻 on October 24, 2003, 10:09:00 am
I was outside the club waiting for Lily to show up when I heard them go on. At first I thought, "hmmm...they sound pretty tight, write catchy songs...sound a little like ELO maybe." Then when I went in and saw them, I thought they took too many bad fashion suggestions from Journey, REO Speedwagon, and Loverboy. I felt kind of sorry for them actually. And then I thought of the band Jellyfish...retro, late 60's/early 70's-influenced rockers from the early 90's. Anyone remember them? And I thought, "well, if it didn't work for them, I don't think it will work for Rooney".  Not that Rooney can't play...they can. But I didn't care much for them at all.

It was a Grohl-less evening.

But "Dancing Man" was there.  Anybody know this guy?  He's older and slim with really short hair.  He jumps around frenetically, claps his hands and yells very loudly.  I've seen him at a few other shows, most recently BRMC (I think) where he was shirtless.

Killing Joke were solid, although they seemed to be in a shitty mood.  Jaz is beginning to look like Ozzy; Geordie plays effortlessly; and the dude on the drums is excellent.  Played a lot of the old stuff -- Wardance, Kings and Queens, Follow the Leader, Whiteout -- and some of the new stuff.  They didn't play an encore.

i don't think that Jellyfish fashion sense is what did them in... they were a great group that broke up before they could reach their full potential.  their boxset of demoes and live tracks is killer.  Jellyfish's 60's influence fashion were probably meant to a personally ironic statement at the start of the 90's.  Rooney's style was probably picked out by a stylist.

I wasn't too hopeful re: Rooney (I didn't go to the show, just commenting on Rooney).  A couple months back there was a live concert with Rooney on MTV2 and at the same time they were on some show on MTV as well -- it was kinda weird, and I wasn't impressed.  With either show.

Oh, it did work for Jellyfish, it did!  That is a fabulous band, they top most of my lists.  The whole 60s drug trippy flower child thing was a bit much, but the albums are fantastic.

Sorry, *had* to interject.  I also have a great jellyfish story -- I saw them back in the day at the old 9:30 Club.  All love and hippies and flowers.  They had these plastic tubes that shot flowers into the audience.  Well, that's one of the two times in my life I thought I was gonna get punched.  One of those goddamn concert-goers who is not used to a crowded show and gets all belly-achy about the crowd.  I was being pushed around, and he went off on my that he'd been standing there, that was his spot, on and on.  I *really* thought he was gonna punch me, especially after I handed him a daisy.
   ;)

yeah, this little woman driving an F150 apparantly hit her gas instead of her break causing the whole deal.  I'm fine, my car will need some work (front/back)...more of a pain in the ass than anything else

This is so mean of me, and I'm sorry, but THANK

The boxset is that good?  I'm a big fan, but don't usually do boxsets, demos, etc., not even of my favorites.  But their catalog is so small, that maybe I should get on this one.

no, they were just driving along, and she looked over and saw you and your boy toy standing on the side of the road and remarked to her co-worked that she knew you.  she only yells obscenities at me.   :)

so did grohl show up last night? as i said to kosmette after flaking out from going to show, that he was sure to show up. [/b]
It was a Grohl-less evening.

It WAS NOT a Grohl-less evening!! I ran into Mr. Grohl and posse between the opener and Killing Joke. I literally ran into him! I was getting a stout at the bar and turned around and almost spilled my brew on the smallish, tattooed one.He said he was checking the show and he wasn't going to play. He didn't.I was standing next to that crazy old dancing guy for quite a while last night.

But "Dancing Man" was there.  Anybody know this guy?  He's older and slim with really short hair.  He jumps around frenetically, claps his hands and yells very loudly.  I've seen him at a few other shows, most recently BRMC (I think) where he was shirtless.

I have heard him referred to as "Coked-up Carl", but not sure if that's really his name. He was quite entertaining at BRMC, a little less wound up last night I thought.
FYI I'm pretty sure Killing Joke are always in a shitty mood.

since there were no females on stage it would be safe assume that dancin' larry wasn't there...

Oh, shit! These are two different characters!?        And here I was thinking that you were talking about the same one.

I've yet to see either one. I know I'm missing out.
