Wondering who's planning to hit this show Monday, and if anyone thinks I need to get a ticket in advance.
Yippee.
-
I'm in. Not getting tix in advance. Only interested in Ambulance Ltd. but I'll stick around. I thought they were amazing when they opened for Placebo last year.
-
I'll be there as well...paying at the door. It's a Monday show, plus the weather may still be iffy with the double hurricanes coming up the coast.
-
there's a chance i'll be there. . .
-
Yeah, I figured all that...but as I've said before, I'm often surprised by a show's popularity or lack thereof. Big buzz over Ambulance in the last couple of months, so I just wasn't sure. I'll be by 9:00, though, which should be fine.
-
Well I have not been to many concerts recently so my radar is weak.
Elefant recently only just sold out the velvet lounge and a show with Amulance LTD and Stellastarr**** didnt sell out the upstairs of the cat.
I would guess at you being fine, especially as at the stellastarr show only a handful of people were there to watch Ambulance LTD.
-
I forgot to say, we have our tickets already, of course.
-
dang, I love both bands, but there's that whole polyphonic spree thing, you know...

Ditto, I'd like to them but damn those hippies put on a great show! Might have to go with polyphonic. Besides, I am banking on Ambulance coming back soon. I really like their album.

Yep. I know of a couple of people who were torn on which show to attend and ultimately bought Spree tickets.
-
I'll be there. Looking forward to both bands. Don't have a ticket yet, but I'll probably get one in advance.

what shows dont you go to, pal? i want your job :)
-
That's right...thank goodness for the Spree! They're definitely siphoning off some folks from this show.
-
I'm not going to see Phish tonight in Camden.
-
count me in for monday. :)
-
I like the Spree (in a live setting) a lot, but I love Ambulance much more. I will most definitely be at this show and at the front. The Ambulance album is still one of my favorite releases of the year.
-
I'll be in the Red Room by 9:00, and upstairs by Ambulance...
-
ooh i can't wait...........
sorry though girls it's all about elephant for me..........

I'll be there with my missus who is visiting Lulu...she's a Diego fan as well...you two can get randy looking at him...me and markie will reap the benefits once we get home...
-
i am there, right up front, between lulu and kurosawa. there's enough pretty band boys to go around. i mean, they're both really great bands.
-
So let me get this straight. She's visiting Lulu and going to the show to watch Diego. What benefits are you reaping?

Might be there...I generally don't do shows at the black cat but I'm willing to give it a shot for Ambulance LTD. I can't get into Elefant at all...especially after seeing them open for Interpol. Lose the rockstar ego.
-

Smackette thought that Diego's boyfriend, er, I mean Elefant's manager, was very pretty too, and much more talkative. Diego was too busy hugging the boys in the front row to pay any attention to her.
I enjoyed the performance (whihc it is - half music, half Diego's ego, but the musicianship is great) and would kill to see this double-billing.
-
does anyone know what time ambulance will go on?
-
I would just like to say again how excited I am for this show.
And I would guess that Ambulance will go on sometime between 9:30 and 10. But you'd better check with the Black Cat on that.
-
I'm excited too! And I'd say, if you want to catch Ambulance, get to the club by 9:30...
-
Nope...apparently not going...the wife can't bring herself to give Elefant any money... :p

May I ask why? Just wondering if there's some well-known Elefant news or story I've never heard...
-
Nothing other than the fact that they didn't impress much when we saw them. From what I remember, their songs sound like they would be improved by a different singer. Also, they were one of those bands, at least to me, that sounded better in the studio than live.

According to Elkland's website (http://elkland.net/), this is the line-up:
Aug. 16th - Washington D.C.
@ Black Cat
9:30pm - Elkland
10:30pm- Ambulance LTD
11:30pm- Elefant
All Ages
$10
-
I'm skeptical of those set times...the doors are 8:30, and the Cat doesn't usually have an hour before the first band goes on. At least, I hope it's wrong -- 11:30 headliner on a school night, and a Monday no less, is rough.
-edit- Just looked at that website, and they do have different and very specific times for each show. Damn... So what's Elkland like?
-

From a review linked from their site: "Elkland are more Pet Shop Boys ish in their sound than the others and deliver their shown in a non-stop danceable style that is at once infectious and fun. Having signed to Sony and on a hot run of shows in NYC, they're out to prove that their staying power and mass appeal are as strong as their stage show."
I'm listening to the MP3 posted on their site. I don't know about Pet Shop Boys, but I hear New Order influences. It's very upbeat and dancey, but it didn't grab me right away.
But yeah, tonight Ambulance will be the headliner for me since I'll depart after their set. I'm going to another show tomorrow night will be a wreck as it is.

Anyone coming to this who has the new Burning Brides? Can't decide if it's a show I should hit...don't know 'em.

BB are a great live band, but I'm not liking the new album so much. Their previous release, Fall of the Plastic Empire, is great.

I can burn you a copy if I have time. Or I can pass on a copy a nice moderator here gave me before I had my own copy.
I feel differently than Random Citizen about the albums, I think the first album is weak but sounds great live and the new one is great.
-
I've tended to hear that the new album is better, or I should say preferred... I'd love to hear it. Now if only there were *something* I could exchange, but I think you have me beat every way upside and down in the old music dept.

I think you have more Barry Mannilow than Pollard!!!
-
Yes, that is true, Markie. I have that ONE Barry Manilow greatest hits CD I got for free (with a concert tee, that I find hysterical and admit to loving)...you got me. Pollard, I'm happy to bring a copy for you if you're interested...

You only have one greatest hits CD, what about regular albums?
-
Nope, no regular albums. It's true. You don't believe me, do you...
-
I believe you.....
But will you deny having the barenaked ladies and Metallica in your collection?
-
You are such a noodge, Markie. I'm proud to have Metallica... :p
-
Just to bring the thread topic back to Amublance, Ltd. I just saw they're opening for all the area Killers dates in early October. (Surferosa too).
-
I haven't heard the Plastic Empire CD but I LOOOOVE Leave no Ashes - one of my favorite CDs of the year so far

I had wanted to go to this gig (and had planned on it) but alas, I have been ill all day, and am still not better - so I am going to sleep now, instead of heading out. :(
Wish I were feeling better. :/
I have an inkling tonight will be a stellar night! Can't wait to read the reviews in this thread, though I will probably be jealous for missing out. (sigh) ;)
Cheers

i hope you feel better!! sadly, i am missing out on this show as well. but if you were hoping to see ambulance like i was, they will be back at 9:30 in october with the killers :-)

Got upstairs around 9:15pm and Elkland had already started. They were okay, but I couldn't get past the lead singer's hair. They looked so preppy. They ended their set with a dance-pop version of the Cranberries' "Salvation."
Ambulance arrived way late. There was about an hour between Elkland and Ambulance. I think they had van trouble, got lost or something. They got on stage around 10:55pm. It literally looked as if they just rolled up with guitars in hand because they started playing a shortly after hitting the stage.
They played 5 songs: Heavy Lifting, Primitive, Stay Where You Are, blanking on the fourth song and they ended with Yoga Means Union.
By then, it was about 11:15, so I decided to head home.

Ambulance is playing at Fletcher's in Baltimore on Wednesday but without Elefant.

then what's the point............?
diego is a superior godlike being and elefant are great on stage, everything you expect and want in a rock band right down to the posturing........and just how tight were his trousers? phew i like to know a man's religion in the first five seconds on seeing him.
ambulance were terrifically average...........
-
i think ambulance got screwed with their set. elefant was around and easily could have gone on first and then ambulance after them. the guys couldn't even do a proper soundcheck and then had to cut their set in half. and it was glaringly apparent that the crowd wanted them on stage for longer and they wanted to play for their fans. itwasn't their intention to get caught in traffic trying to get out of massachusetts.
they've been a support act too long. its time for them to headline their own tour.
-

But looking at those two bands, would anyone stick around for Ambulance after Elefant had played?
-
"Yoga Means Union" was fantastic, but I really love that song. The rest was good, but not great. Maybe it was the travel, but there was some energy missing...I felt for the guys, though. The Club wanted to change the order, but obviously were told they couldn't. Ambulance will be back in Oct at the 9:30 so they'll have another chance and a longer set.
Elefant was quite entertaining, I must say. And as ego-driven as Diego is, he does give props to his band and stand back and let them get a bit of spotlight during a bridge here and there. Good drummer, I like how they use it. Monday shows are SUCH a killer though...especially when they run late.

Yup, I think they would have...a lot of folks were there specifically to see Ambulance. I know you preferred Elefant, but the Ambulance album has been getting a lot of play, so people would stick around. Through the whole set, that late -- that's another question.
-
Great show! I know Elefant and Ambulance could have switched slots, but hey, Ambulance should have been on time. Their short set was great though. Maybe I'll check'em out again when they open for the Killers.
Also, even though Diego is an absolute prima donna who cribs all of Morrissey's stage mannerisms, he is a captivating front man and elefant was stunning as I expected. Does anyone remember when elefant was hanging out with Interpol at the Black Cat after their 930 show last year. Diego promised to do a shot with me and he bitched out. Then came last call and all the hip rockstars got sent out just like the rest of us normal folk. Classic.
Amazing night. Glad I went and stayed for the whole thing. Now I got to get a cup of coffee.

Sorry, but I didnt see any Mad Moz Moves last night.
What did he do that you thought was Morrissey-esque?
-
I think he has more Richard Butler than Moz (though a little of the balletic fluidity of Moz)...a few of his gestures were bugging me -- waving hello during the chorus "hello, hello" and talking/singing "thank you, thank you..." near the end of the set. But, way better than the standing still deal exhibited by so many other lead singers. He was cool, and did get better looking as the set went on. What's with the hair, though? And his bandmates follow his lead -- the bass player had this "shaggy but actually highly styled" doo that was just awful.

he is a lovely,lovely man..........with excellent hair
there were other guys on stage?.................hmmmmm
-
I know, Lulu, you like that squiffy hair look. I think it just looks messy (and at one point he messed it up more, I thought 'contrived,' but you probably thought 'sexy'!). I appreciated him, though, I really did! ;)
-
As usual, I had a different reaction... I loved (loved!) Ambulance's set. The poor guys came running onto the stage directly from the van, had no soundcheck, and still sounded incredible. I found them much more intense and interesting than Elefant. Diego is entertaining, but for me (and I know I differ from the rest of you on this), I find Ambulance's songs longer-lasting. I look forward to when they actually headline a show!

From the Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A9801-2004Aug17.html)
POP MUSIC
Elefant and Ambulance Ltd.
Elefant and Ambulance Ltd., who shared the stage Monday night at the Black Cat, seemed in advance to be an exceptionally compatible double bill. Both bands, after all, are New York outfits that draw inventively on arty and punky '60s and '70s rock. In practice, however, the two groups failed to achieve equilibrium -- not because of their music but because Ambulance Ltd. arrived too late to perform a full set.
The headlining Elefant is a quartet whose three instruments -- not counting Diego Garcia's voice -- achieve a remarkably full sound. Garcia's theatrical vocals, which echo the delivery of various glitter and goth icons, were at the center of the band's style, but Mod's versatile guitar was no less remarkable. Supplemented by various electronic effects, the guitar was visceral yet elegant, and capable of being either scrappy or epic. Yet it never overwhelmed such songs as "Bokkie" and "Make Up," in which Garcia celebrated giddy infatuation as if he'd just invented it.
Hitting the stage before Elefant -- and almost an hour late -- Ambulance Ltd. played only five songs and less than 25 minutes. Much like the evening's other act, the quintet is capable of quick, graceful shifts between chiming and churning passages. Songs such as "Stay Where You Are" had a hint of pre-rock melodic traditions, yet incorporated the modal surge of such forebears as the Velvet Underground and the Feelies. The locomotion had barely begun, however, when the band had to apply the brakes.

Diego lost me with the trouser legs of his pants inside his boots... very Napoleon Dynamite...but the apeing was entertaining and that was all I could ask for a free show..some good souls gave us for free their 2 extra tickets...there's still good people around...

Yeah, I know. I'm still trying to decide whether to drive up or not... I wish they would headline a DC show.
