R.E.M.?
-
"Special guests" usually means some local or small time bands that haven't been confirmed yet.
I have my guesses but they aren't REM. Of course, I'm not on the inside so I really have no clue.
-
$12 for Tom Brokaw and a local band just doesn't seem to make sense. I suppose it could be a reason to get people in the club to drink a few and hang out but doesn't that seem like an odd thing to do? 930 has done plenty of low-key big-name gigs in the past(Bob Dylan, Justin Diaz-Timberlake, Radiohead), REM is a "Rock the vote" band and just happen to be playing at DAR the night before so it all seems way too convenient. I just don't see any reason to open the place up unless it is for something significant. I suppose it could be just for kicks but I don't really see anyone showing up but a handful of board regulars unless it is a heavy hitter. Plus I'm sure Michael Stipe is chopping at the bit for throwing a victory party....
-
Yeah, but it's early. They could have a lot of bands playing all night long.
I have a feeling it might be a collection of big mouths and bands. As far as bands, anyone from Fugazi and it's offshoots to possibly some of the stars from the MoveOn.com tour mixing it all up. Or it could be the cost of setting up big screens with some kind of satellite or cable broadcasting, maybe both in and out of the club to some network or cable station, which could be cool.
If you're planning on going, you better hope and pray that it's not The Capitol Steps and Mark Russell or you will be really pissed off. :p Maybe even Suede will make an appearance representing the Gay vote.
But as I noted previously, this is all speculation because I have no idea.
I wonder if Marion Berry will pop in looking for all the goods up in the dressing room?
-
Doubtful about Fugazi or it's offshoots. They tend to have a $6 limit on their shows. $12 would be too much.
-
Good point! Forgot about that. But you have to admit that those guys are sort of a given in DC with a rocking heavy politcal function of sorts. Wonder if Bob Mould will be involved?
Then again, it's an HFS thing so it could be some real shit.
-
From the Washington Post "Got Plans" discussion:
9:30 Club: I just saw your posting on the 9:30 Club election night party... have you heard any rumors of who the "very special guests" are going to be? Is it worth the 12 bucks or should I watch it someplace where I might be able to hear the results??
Rhome: My sources say that Bob Mould will be dj'ing. And then these guys called Poem-Cees will be hosting. It'll be a scene, but probably not one for folks who want to really concentrate on the civic proceedings.
-
Thanks Bags. Doesn't sound like my sort of thing. I'm sure there will be a good sized crowd though.
-
It sounds like a cool event, but I''m not so sure I want to stand around for hours watching results SLOWLY roll in...it's hard to imagine what the event will be like.
-
I saw the Poem-cees at the Warped tour many years ago. They were very good -- if you're into that kinda thing.
But this election night party might be premature. I've been checking the polls and looking hard at the swing states and discovered an interesting (and not unreasonable) scenario:
Kerry takes the following swing states -- Oregon, Minnesota, Iowa, and Ohio.
Bush takes Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Wisconsin and Florida.
Final electoral tally:
Bush 269
Kerry 269

Tim Russert has it figured at a tie right now as well...It may be a long election week.
-
But GGW, what about Pensylvania? Aren't they one of the big swingers they've been courting?

The Colorado "split" vote referendum has something like a 60% approval rating in polls, so if Bush takes Colorado, Kerry would still get 4 electoral votes, barring Bush's team running to the Supreme Court and demanding it get overturned.

Kerry hasn't had a lead of less then 5 in that state in over a month. The labor union "get out the vote" effort in MI and PA make them traditional democrat landslide states.
-
polls schmolls.
people polling doesn't reach:
folks with caller ID
folks who have only a cell phone
folks recently registered to vote
folks not home during traditional hours
folks who dont speak english/spanish
folks who move alot.
ok, that said, each of those groups lean democratic. so...
one other interesting fact:
23% of R's say this is the most important election of their lifetime.
74% of D's say this is the most important election of their lifetime.
may have some sway on things...

why isn't Kerry crushing???
he definately fucked up somewhere. i have been raised republican but fuck...we can't win...
-
I've been wondering the same thing for the longest time. This should be one of the easiest elections in US history for the Dems and half the country still supports this mental midget of a president. The guy is clearly flushing the country down the shitter domestically and has alienated almost all of our allies around the world but he still has this much support. What the fuck????????????????

A drowning man (Republican?) will hold on to anything to keep his head above water, even the worst life ring in the history of the U.S.

and that's actually what the polling shows: this is more of a culture war than an election.
for Bush are conservative (duh), church-going, not-college-educated, rural folks.
for Kerry are urban, educated, non-religious folks.
so... when idiots vote, you get...?
damn the evangelical voter turnout machine.
-
What church does ggw go?
I may have my differences with him, but he seems pretty educated to me. Same goes for Bede.

And I'm religious. But, I also define "respect for life" to go beyond the womb to life on earth as well. Luckily fewer Catholics than is often assumed vote on that one issue. Many (was most) tend to vote Democratic due to the blue collar/immigrant associations from the early to mid 20th century.

Polls define "church-going" as once a week or more. And of that crowd, over 70% is bushie.

VERY cool graphic at the N.Y. Times.... (http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/politics/2004_ELECTIONGUIDE_GRAPHIC/)
It's interactive and gives you all different breakdowns.

From the W. Post:
The 9:30 club (815 V St. NW; 202-393-0930) and WHFS (99.1 FM) are hosting a big Rock the Vote fundraiser with hip-hop hosts the Poem-Cees fronting as election results roll on the big screen and a very special DJ set from Bob Mould. VIP tickets ($25) get you real chairs, but the rest of it, including drink specials and major celeb sightings, is only $12.
At the Black Cat (1811 14th St. NW; 202-667-7960), videographer-mixmaster Robin Bell and DJ Spooky will be reframing the political debate right before your eyes, instantaneously deconstructing and remixing election returns from the various TV networks (plus a little canned footage "for context") while providing a move-and-groove soundtrack to encourage a civil exchange of ideas ($12).
Velvet Lounge (915 U St. NW; 202-462-3213) is bringing in punkster-satirists the Political Blockheads to rock while the numbers roll; admission is $6, but bring your own (preferably expendable) television between 8 and 9 and get in free. No prize for screen size.
-
Or for $17 ($20 day of show), you can see an actual live band at Jammin Java. One of the best, BR549. Hopefully, they won't have any tv's on.

They don't have a TV in the venue. Unless they decide to put one in on that day. Actually, I hear through the grapevine, they are looking forward to this show and hoping people can attend.
