Anyone mourning the death rattle of the mechanical age?
Mike Bannister before he took the controls to fly the Big Bird up and away from the Big Apple. He told the last passengers: "We're going to take you to the edge of space, where the sky gets darker, where you can see the curvature of the earth.
"We're going to travel across the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound, faster than a rifle bullet, 23 miles every minute. We're going to travel so fast, we are moving faster than the earth's rotation - and the world will be watching us."

i flew in that mofo once a long, long time ago... even though I was just a kid it was an experience I'll never forget.

Doctor Doom is GGW...huh, who knew?
My best memory of Concord is from waaaaay back. Me and a good mate from the Navy decided to spend our leave in Majorca...Anyway, we're pissed out of our heads at Reading train station waiting for the train down to London to get the flight. Lying on the bench on the platform I looked up and there she was in all her beauty...of course, being the two piss-heads we were at the time, it took a good while before we realized it wasn't a UFO.....oh, those were the days!

Where did you fly to, DD?

I saw one takeoff from Dulles. Very loud, but now quite memorable.

Yes, it was great, thanks for asking.
Actually passed my 11+ so my school was free.
Dupek its the vulcan bomber (http://www.avrovulcan.com/). Its much bigger than that first picture makes it look. I forgot it was in thunderball.
There are about 10 military airfields within about a 50 mile radius of where I grew up. We saw cool planes all the time. Even the b52s from the first Bush war on Iraq.

Yeah, I dont know what an 11+ is, but good for you I guess. Was this Stamford?

Unfortunately/fortunately, one cannot change one's privilaged/unprivilaged upbringing just as one cannot change ones parents or ones class.
Madonna is finding this out the hard way.

Ours (http://www.aviation-history.com/convair/b58.html) was faster! Nyeh nanny goat!

Well in some places if you passed 11+ it let you go, but you still had to pay. the system has been mostly phased out now. In my day there were about 100 places to be won. Now I think its 10.
I would be laying bricks right now if it were not for that.
Yes this was Stamford. My parents never moved whilst I was at school.

Well then I guess that is what my dad did, did that system go back that far?

Yes, it goes back a long time.

I think fate would've brought us together, no matter what!

Though I've seen Concords on the tarmac, I never even had the priviledge of booking one when I was a travel agent. Even all of the Kennedys and the country clubbers, and other elites that I dealt with opted out of that hefty fare.
I once heard the drone of a Stealth Bomber fly directly over my apartment and then crash only about a second or so later.

You and Mankie both have good stealth stories. I dont. Its so unfair.

I just heard an NBC News report that said that the Concorde was "legendary" for flying at more than twice the speed of "light". Hell, if that was true "legendary" wouldn't even begin to describe it.

Hahaha. Goes to show how bad news reporting has gotten.
Time travelers, anyone?

It was probably in a hurry to get to the middle-east for Bush's 'continued occupation' of Iraq. :D
