Pretty odd list. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/page/0,10607,1068626,00.html) At least two of my favourites made it.
-
Oh my. This I got to see. Be right back after I read through the list.
-
Another list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_famous_suicides)
-
British people are crazy
-
The list is bollocks as usual, and these black performers really need help with their spelling.

My granddad use to send us tapes all the time, I think I heard "The Lift" 100 times growing up.

I didn't know about Brian Epstein either.
There seems to be quite a few boxers on there relatively speaking.
-
not a bad list, though, I wouldnt put the Lips at the top, probably better than US's list of Top British bands.
-
I agree with many inclusions on the list, though many of the artists I've never heard of:
The Fiery Furnaces, The Magnetic Fields, Bright Eyes, Will Olham and Calexico.
I guess I gotta make a trip to my local record store and check out their records.
I'm very glad to see Wilco, and The Kings Of Leon on the list. They both deserve their spots, in my opinion.
But then I gotta say: What the fuck?? Christina Aguilera?! Pink??! Justin Timberlake??! Freaking Dolly Parton?! Maybe I'm missing somethng.. but for the exception of Parton, none of those three neither write songs or can play an instrument. Hell, maybe Parton doesn't write her own stuff either. And they may say that their instruments are their voices, but ARRGGGHHHHH, that's not enough. Maybe this critic believes that Aguilera, Pink and Timberlake are following on the footsteps of the likes of Madonaa.. but it takes time to make that point, and neither of those three have been around long enough. Ok.. enough about them.
Glad to see The White Stripes and The Strokes on their respective spots. Yeah, many people are sick of them. The hipsters may now hate them.. but I think they did something for rock music that was sorely needed in the past few years--going back to rock's roots and breaking the incestous cycle of over-produced rock music which took hold on the mid to late 90s, giving us nuisance musical genres like nu-metal and nu-punk.
Sadly, there's one aspect of this list I need to appreciate and that is the hip-hop music. I've never been a fan of rap, and I don't think I own a rap/hip-hop record for the exception of The Beastie Boys 'Hey Nasty'. But I've been hearing so much about The Roots and Outkast, that I just might get my first 'black hip-hop' CD very soon.. I think it might be Outkast's latest. I've seen the video for 'Hey Ya' a couple of times and I truly find it refreshing, humorous, unique and even a bit groundbreaking.
As for their number one: The Flaming Lips. Couldn't agree more. Their last two CDs have establish them as risk-taking, accomplished, talented musicians. The band and its music has a great vibe and emotional resonance. No. 1 indeed.
-
Now I gotta check out Dupek's suicide list... I'm always mordbidly curious. :p

Those are some of the best ones, well except for Fiery Furnaces
-
Outkast, The Neptunes, White Stripes and The Roots are the most deserving of thier spots.
Pink, the Strokes and Kings Of Leon.....please, they are worthless.
and where the HELL was Pearl Jam. Out of sight and out of mind i suppose.

Cowboy Junkies, Rush and Alanis Morrisette
-
Vansmack, I think they are meant to be current acts.
Either way, if it were not for the cowboy Junkies it would be an awful list.

Judging by the acts of the first list, I didn't realize quality was one of the requirements.

Yes, I was trying to avoid quality, which is not hard to do when talking Canadian music, that being said, I like Rush.
-

Ditto. In my top 5 trios of all time.
-
For those who have never seen Cowboy Junkies live....THEY SUCK ASS! I did sit in front of them at a Caps game one time though....they were more lively at the game than during their show.

if it weren't for so much manufactured hype the kings of leon would be still asking if you wanted fries with that shake...
there spot should easily be filled with GBV, Slobberbone or The Drive-by Truckers.
i have no problem with artists who don't write there own songs. Prior to the Beatles most artists didn't write own songs. Frank Sinatra and Elvis certainly weren't great songwriters. The problem today is the current hitmakers aren't up to quality of the old Brill Building hitmakers. And today an artist image is more important than their repratory...

So what you're saying is, "new music is all shite"...which is what I've been saying all along! :p

and you can take off the Strokes in favor of Brendan Benson... I'm suprised Brendan not on that list seeing as he's got more exposure in the UK then here.

Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet are Cannucks.
As is Pursuit Of Happiness

So in all, disregarding quality, we don seem to have many more than 20.
So my earlier facetious comment appears to be true.
We could always look here (http://www.monkey-boy.com/cmusic/), but its really boring
-
anyone know why lambchop has better exposure in the uk than the us? john peel possibly... and if you say because they have better taste in the uk, you'll have to explain away bros, bucks fizz and steps
-
The British do have better music taste though, check out the albums and singles charts for comparisons.
Captain America also talked up Lambchop rather a lot on his Virgin show.
But Lambchop played a bit larger venues in the UK as well.

until you post about Bryan Adams.

Gee thanks Sonic......
notice that GGW cleverly avoided posting the American chart? Because whoever bad the UK chart is, there are still some quality albums left on it..... Which is probably more than can be said for the American top40.

I'd include:
Hawksley Workman
Danko Jones
Kid Koala
SaraH Slean
Sarah M
to add a few more to your list...and I personally would put the above into the quality list...

That GGW is one sly fox.....

I'd say that the U.K. and U.S. charts are of equal quality.
We've got Clay Aiken and you've got the Spice Gir...err....I mean Sugababes.

Ouch -- not even one of them...Sarah M refers to Sarah Mclachlan -- I was being lazy -- you know her.
Danko is pure rock...Hawksley is kinda garage/glamish rock...kid koala is one of the best djs on the planet (included on U.N.K.L.E. and deltron 3030)...sarah slean has an amazing voice...just bc all people hear from canada is weak, doesn't mean all canadian artists are weak...
maybe kid koala wasn't on u.n.k.l.e...need back up help on this one

I was happy to see Queens of the Stone Age on that list. For me, they have the potential to be one of the best American bands of all time if they keep up. The last concert I saw them do really demonstrated how they are working their asses off...I hope they keep it up.
-
agreed, though I sadly have never seen them live.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/top40/indie.shtml (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/top40/indie.shtml)
so the indie chart is only a bit better... with lots of rap dr dre, 50 cent, 2pac, and snoop doggy dogg in the middle. but many of the artists on this list are signed to majors in the us. and just how many hundred(s) of copies of the warren zevon need to sold in order to come in at 40

Nick Oliveri's side project Mondo Generator (http://www.mondogenerator.com) is playing Black Cat next month. The opening act is one of Markie's favorite bands Bad Wizard. (http://www.teepeerecords.com/badwizard/)

nothing i really like, fuckin eurobastards...

add blue rodeo to the canuck list and robbie robertson
-
Sonic, you can add to that list,
The High Dials
Readymade
....both very good bands.
And not so good:
Sam Roberts
Pilate
____________
I was surprised to see that Magnetic Fields are American. Always assumed they were British.
PR_GRM, Will Oldham lives in Baltimore. Or he did, that last I heard. Don't know if he's from Baltimore or what his story is. Maybe his family is here so has planted his roots with them.
That picture of JT cracked me up. He looks so hardcore there. LOLOLOLOL.
And the one of The Neptunes really threw me for a loop. They look so different from all the other pictures I've seen. Looks like they've been hanging out with Ladytron.
-
ohmigod, that is so funny, because it is so spot on!

Yeah, I should be more specific. I've heard of Will Olham but have never heard his music. Last year, the Creative Alliance had a show where Will performed with his brothers. I didn't catch that. If he's no longer living in Baltimore, I think his siblings still do. I didn't know that Will is so highly regarded.

Manitoba. Canada's finest.

Is it me or some of the bands in Guardian's the top 40 are acts we haven't heard before.
