Title: How has a band been ruined for you?
Post by: ratioci nation on October 31, 2005, 03:02:00 pm
Having people compare Hold Steady to Springsteen made me think of this.

A friend once told me Dean Wareham singing for Luna sounds like Adam Sandler singing.  I cant listen to Luna now without hearing that.  I dont hear it as much with Galaxie 5000.

 Any similar experiences?

When the lead singer of one of my former favorite bands fucked my then-girlfriend.

When "Brick" became a hit single for the Ben Folds Five...

When I realized that Noel Gallager was probably indeed writing lyrics while watching television...

Often if they are assholes when you meet them.  Bands I don't like get kicked up a few notches if they are nice, those that are assholes get kicked down some off my listening lists.

Ones that have gone up (I wish to accent the positive):

 Keane
 Marcy's Playground
 John Mayer
 Howie Day

I feel the same way about artists, if my perception about people changes, it may affect my listening to them.  One of the reasons I rarely listen to Wilco anymore is that I think Jeff Tweedy is probably an asshole.

Maybe. But his performance at this show was pretty cool:

How a band acts in person shouldn't really affect how you listen to them...unless you are a hanger-on of that band.  For example, lets say that You really like Phil Collins' music.  You become obsessed with Phil, following his tour bus and even meeting him after a show.  You become acquainted with Phil socially and begin to hang out with him from time to time. The relationship becomes sexual.  One day while you're sucking his cock he says he won't cum in your mouth, but he blows his load down your uvula anyway.  You ask why he did that, and he tells you to fuck off.

Does this mean that you still can't listen to Hello I Must Be Going anymore?  Does this mean that you have to burn your 45 of Sussudio???  I don't think so.

Wouldn't a TRUE Phil Collins fan WANT to swallow Phil's load?

Just suppose you were hanging out behind stage after a Sleater-Kinney gig eating out Corin Tucker when all of a sudden she lets off a toxic rotten-egg fart which stinks up the area?  Does this mean that you have to put your mint copy of The Hot Rock up for sale on Ebay?

I would imagine TRUE Sleater-Kinney fans would be into weird shit like that anyway.

Suppose one day you suddenly discovered that Ani DiFranco had started shaving her armpits?  Would it set you off your coffee?

What if you let Billy Bragg crash on your sofa only to discover him gone the next morning and that he'd left a used condom floating in your toilet that was resistant to flushing, and that there were mysterious cigarette burn holes in your prized Ikea divan?

I'd bet my left nut that Billy Bragg is a nonsmoker.

That is fine for the fan but if you have to work with these people and you get to the point that you want to kill them, then you definitely will look at selling their records you own.

Sort of like when people break up and trash all the photos and things that remind them of their ex.

Yeah, but you can't help it.  I HATE the Meat Puppets because of their piss ass behavior and attitude when they came to play my school.  They were dicks to my friends in the band that opened for them.  There was just no need.

Meanwhile, Tommy Keene was a complete love when we interviewed him for our radio shows, and put us on the guest list to his show.  He remains a fave.

Same here, but I have a friend with a collection of pictures without the girl's head.  It is disturbing.

Recently I was at a bbq and 2 ex's were there.  Quite odd.

So are you saying the bands you listed were nice, therefore they went up a few notches?

Then that's the difference between being the fan and being the listener.  You being the fan, short for fanatic.

I just like to groove to music.   I don't have any burning desire to suck a dick or collect a drumstick.

Yes.  Keane, playing Fletchers (while having the number 1 single in the UK) were cool with the room, worked with what was there, and had no hissy fits.  Marcy's Playground were just really nice.  John Mayer, everyone thanked us after the show and were cool during the show.  Howie Day, solo acoustic and again, nice, friendly and easy to work with.  And I can't forget Superdrag thanking me by name at the show (I booted it too).
