Went to the Death Cab show on Saturday only to find that my friend's car parked on Georgia and V had it's window broken in order to steal a Swiffer and tape-to-cd adapter.
It is the 4th time a friend's car has had a window smashed in the area...once in Vermont Ave close to Velvet, once in that street parallel to U st that leads into the gas station, once on 9th.. and seems that every so often you go to a show and walking to the metro you see the same happening to others..what a shite neighborhood..it's gotten to the point where I don't invite friends to my band's gigs at DC9 or Velvet out of fear they'll break into their cars..
Before you smartarses mention the 9:30 lot, it was full on saturday. Any other suggestions for the future?? any street seem safer than others to you in the neighborhood?
-
You are wrong. This is a safe neighborhood. If you think otherwise, you must be a yuppie suburbanite.
Sorry...just anticipating the usual "Nothing bad has ever happened to me, therefore it's a safe neighborhood" responses you're bound to get.
My sympathies to your friend.
-
Yeah, parking nearby has never been a problem.
Just don't be a douche.
-
Main streets = good
Side streets = bad
-
We park around R Street between 14th and 15th and walk. Or in that general vicinity.
-
i've never had a problem parking on the streets around the 930 club, except for the time we left the headlights on...
-
I don't know what happened on 8th street (I think, it is the one if you are looking at the club, it is the street to your right, past the alley), but it was nuts on Friday night after the De La Soul show. I'm assuming something bad had to occur, because cops taped off the street and there were patrol cars behind the tape, and patrol cars on V at the intersection. Does anyone know what happened? I normally park on that street but parked in the lot that night thinking parking would be a problem due to the Papa Roach show just prior. Now I'm a bit worried. It's such a shame for something to happen, right after De La laid down such a positive vibe.

So Georgia Ave is not considered to be a Main street??
I'm just baffled..it's not even a question of parking on a well-lit street..I guess next time I'll try and find parking in the Dupont and take the train from there...

You're right! I've only gotten held-up by firearms twice after a show there.

The lot has never sold out in advance. So you can always buy a ticket for the parking lot in advance. For tickets to the parking lot, there is a $2 service charge through tickets.com and $0 from our box office. There is no safer place to park around the club than the parking lot behind the club. The incident Saturday night at 8th and V had nothing to do with patrons of the 9:30 Club.
-
while we're at it, let's rehash the tickets.com service fee discussion. and the discussion about security at the club.
sorry i can't relate. i don't own a windshield or car windows.

I'm not sure where Georgia Avenue is in relation to the Club. I park on Florida between 7th and 9th; on V St. between 7th and 9th; on 8th between Florida and V; on 7th St. in front of the hospital; or along 9th in front of the 9:30 lot -- and my yuppie chariot has never been burgled in the 50-odd times I've parked in those areas.
Does your friend have a tendency to leave things in plain view inside his car?

Seeing that I don't drive to the club anymore since living downtown, I guess I'll tell you the spot I always parked at and never had a problem. 8th St cross over V St and go behind the club, all the way down to where it dead-ends turn into that lot on the left that's for Howard. They don't tow.
As for any other "safer streets" you can try Westminster and 9th, French and 9th, S and 9th. They're more family oriented streets.

The added $$ for parking or taxi can tip the scale into not-worth-it territory. Often I continue on to Plan B if I don't see a good space

I never suggested it had anything to do with the patrons of 9:30. 9:30 is an outstanding venue..DC9 and Velvet are important music venues in their own right. Sadly none of the 3 are located in a particularly safe area and the idea behind this post was to ask around about parking areas where you could hedge, even if slightly, the possibility (a very real one) of having your car burglarized.

Can you divulge what happened at that intersection, or is it top secret? I just wanted to know, because I was a bit worried.

Maybe you could stick to doing shows at Iota, Galaxy Hut, and the Grog and Tankard.

please be forgiving. i know it's chimbly-going-crazy day, but i'm so extremely underworked. it's stressful, being this underworked.

Sorry Fico, my original post was misleading. I didn't think you were saying a patron broke into your friend's car. There were two repsonses in my one post with no paragraph to separate the two.
As to the incident down at 8th and V involving the police, we don't know what exactly happened but we can say that there were no ambulances and that dark blue Department of the Medical Examiner truck didn't show up so it could not have been too bad.
-
Here's a thought, DON'T DRIVE! Its totally metro accessable, or busable or walkable. And don't leave crap in your car...yes swiffers are hot commodity on the black market these days. If I'd had seen it I would have definitely thought twice about trading your swiffer in for some crack.
-
Isn't a swiffer one of those vacuum cleaners?

It's more of a clothmop.

Been to MANY shows. A vast majority of the time we park in the alley leading to the lot. In some instances we will park in the lot. NEVER had an issue. Sorry for what went down with your car. Four times seems a lot to be all by chance. Not sure what to tell you other than maybe try parking in a different place. The alley (or whatever street it is) that leads to the lot has always been safe for us.
-
not a particularly safe area??? u street corridor!?!?!?
not to pull out the sheltered suburbanite dis, but this isn't 1991 ... i never feel unsafe walking around the 930 club, that area is perfectly fine, especially compared to other parts of our fine city.
luckily, i live in adams morgan, don't own a car, and couldn't be happier. i heard the grog and tankard has really cool bands, and glover park is squeeeeaky clean.

Yes it's better than other parts of the city, but there are still car break-ins and muggings over there that people should just be aware of and seek alterations in how they do things.
-
Let's not get into this.
-
I don't think it's a particularly unsafe area, certainly not as bad as parts of SE. Car breaks ins are a risk of urban life. They can happen anywhere, even in what some people consider safe, upscale, neighborhoods. My friend's car was broken into on 19th near S, which most people would consider safer than the area around the 9:30 Club. Obviously, the risk is greater later at night when shows take place when less people are around. I never drive anywhere at night. I always take Metro or a taxi.

oh, but let's! again! let's talk about how bikes are better than cars, then get nasty replies from the car crowd! let's talk about how city livin' is superior and then get replies whining about how expensive it is! oh, it's so much fun...
but seriously, folks-- one disturbing thing in this thread, IMHO:
we're not delineating between *property* damage and personal harm.
Might your stuff get stolen? Yes. But you weren't hurt. Your stuff is replaceable, you're not. There's a good chance your stuff might get stolen, but the chances of you being hurt are about zero in the U Street corridor these days. And that's a good thing.
All I can say is, if you really need my stuff, take it. But when folks start getting hurt, that's reason for concern.

I live in Arlington / Rosslyn and I ALWAYS take a taxi . I call it " cabbing and tabbing."
That takes care of many issues...no car, no drunk driving, no parking, no hassles. It's ALWAYS worth the extra money.

I've been attending and playing shows in the U st. area for a good five years. I'd have to say that with my own eyes I have seen more than a dozen broken car windows...that is something I can not say of any other neighborhood in DC, granted I practically never leave NW...I don't undertand why some people seem to take this personally and try to deny the fact of the matter...this is by no means the 9:30's, Velvet's, DC9's, etc doing, it's just a fact of life in this specific area of the district. If your car has never been broken into, if you have never seen a car with a freshly broken window, fine, great.. but don't argue with those who've seen it or have had it happen to them, as if its something we are trying to make up...
-

Which street you park on around here doesn't really matter if you leave a bunch of stuff visible inside your car. Just don't give them a reason.
-

On my walk to work along 16th st I used to see, a couple of new broken windows each morning.... As time went on it stopped happening. The areas of N.W. I go to have gotten a lot better in the last 5 years.
But nowhere is safe, I mean the waiter from Annies got killed near Dupont Circle only a few weeks back. Someone was shot on 14th an W last week.
The tape adaptor in the car is a signal to theives that the glove box might contain a nice new CD player or something better. It is stupid to leave anything that even hints at monetry value in plain site if you leave your car on the street, anywhere.
-
I've been attending shows at 9:30 on a regular basis now for the past six years. On my first few visits there, I was a bit tentative about my surroundings since everything in that vicinity was new to me. However, now that I am used to going to the club, I really don't have any problems. I've never had my car broken into or any damage at all done to my car. Normally what I do is any cd's or anything else that could be considered valuable, I stash under my seats. The only thing that sticks out is the sun shield for my windshield that stays rolled up in my backseat.
Now I do have to admit, that I did get a little freaked out when I left the club early Sat. morning and 8th and V were taped off with patrol cars there for whatever happened. That was the first time in six years that I was a little uneasy about being around there.
No matter what, there really isn't any place safe these days. And it's been like that far before 9/11 (before anyone hits that tangent). You have to watch what you do, and do the best you can to enjoy life. Anything can happen, anywhere, from the burbs, to the country, to the city. It doesn't matter.
-
I find the area around the club safe and getting safer. I always park on the 8th street.
But I'm definitely down with the whole idea of taking the metro there and cabbing back. No more worrying about DUIs. After all, you never know when a friendly bartender will entice you with vodka shots. And I just can't say no.... :)
-
You fools! Have you forgotten the enticement of the Swiffer? Yes the neighborhoods not good, no neighborhood in dc is...i've seen several broken windows in georgetown too. The bottom line is, if I need your swiffer, I'm takin' that shit, and if I have to get into you car to do it, be that in georgetown, SE or the U street corridor, then with god as my witness, I WILL! And then I will have a dust free home. And you will be ridden with the mites of hell and sneeze uncontrolably.
-
I think you should be worrying about killing people more than you should be worried about getting caught for a dui.

dude, I'm not taking this personally and I'm not denying the fact that you've seen broken car windows ...
i AM quibbling with your statements that a) the neighborhood is "shite" and has "gotten to the point" where you tell your friends not to come
the neighborhood is fine, and it has gotten and is getting much much better than it ever was.

In the burbs, they'll take your car stereo, your tires and put your car on blocks. When my car was broken into in DC, they took nothing -- not the cds, stereo, or coats. However, they did take two advil tablets and some gum that were inside a coat pocket.

i think the bottom line is (as someone else mentioned earlier)
it doesn't really matter where you are....... you should always keep your wits about you (some will find this harder than others........ :p )
and it really doesn't matter what you leave visable in a car..........just don't leave anything visable............
really people.........come on.........why leave anything in a car on show.......? it's like when you see people driving and picking their nose or singing .................we can see you.

Most shocking incident for me in DC. Went to the museums on the mall with friends. Well one was from Vermont, she left her wallet VISIBLE on the back seat. Plain view. Shockingly, no one broke into my car to get it.
Only time I have had my car broken into was in baltimore on a side street. I didn't leave anything in view, hid all well before I parked.
Hiding stuff in advance is usually good enough. Don't park and put a purse or other valuable in the trunk, yes it is out of view, but still it is known to be there.
Rule of thumb, if the incident doesn't make the paper it was nothing serious, was in vegas this past weekend and the mart across the street from our hotel was blocked off with police tape and about 12 cop cars. Never made the news, guess it wasn't that bad...
-
i'd like to take this opportunity to rant about something.
i showed up this past march for the george clinton show, recording gear in hand because the band allows taping ( http://georgeclinton.com/taping_policy.htm (http://georgeclinton.com/taping_policy.htm) ).
when i got there we were told we couldn't bring the stuff in. now whenever questions are asked to the faq board about what's allowed and what's not, the statement typically is (if a direct answer isn't available) to bring it to the club and if it's not allowed it'll be put in the office to pick up later). this being the case, we inquired about doing that until the matter could be cleared up because the band does in fact, despite what we were told at the door, allow taping and this issue could have been cleared up. the response we got to having the gear in the office was 'no'. when we brought up that it was never a problem/issue before, the response was simply 'not tonight', so i had to go take thousands of dollars of equipment and put it in my car, which didn't make me too comfortable.
if my car had been broken into that night, i can't guarantee to be able to convey the extent of what my rage would have been.
-
that sucks - let me look into it
