Is a Ben Gibbard solo show uglier than a Death Cab show?

I would think not; if you're under the impression the DCFC guys are ugly -- and I'm not disagreeing -- then certainly no matter how ugly Gibbard is solo, there's a multiplier effect if you get all of them together.

Are you sure it's not additive?

Or perhaps you would compare Gibbard to the mean of the other three?

I would say it's a multiplier. One ugly girl is bad enough but three of them together is worse then the three apart in rapid succession.

We could compare Gibbard's ugliness to the average of the other three, but I don't really see what it has to do with this.

Oh, man, if we're counting the entire lineup then there's so many interesting mathematical angles to consider. We have to consider ugliness vs. time as well. We have to compute the ugliness of each act compared to the time we have to endure them, then sum them together for a total night ugliness.

Someone get to work on this and post a picture of the equations.

heh, that's funny... earlier this evening i started a post calling for an equation with the dimension of time added in, but thought best not to post it since the geekdom on this list is sure to actually produce something that i'd rather not see.

but since we're now down that path anyways: what about distance?  closer to the stage = greater impact of the total ugliness?  does ugliness follow an inverse-square law, like acoustic or gravity?

I'm not loving that the Morrissey shows are Monday in DC and Tuesday in Baltimore.  Less likely for me to try to make both, to get two different types of shows.  But I'm not complaining.

Now, about being stuck with early show tickets for Ben Gibbard because I got out and got tickets in a timely fashion.......

'Lie group E8' math puzzle solved (http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/03/21/math.puzzle.solved.ap/index.html)

PALO ALTO, California (AP) -- An international team of mathematicians says it has cracked a 120-year-old puzzle that researchers say is so complicated that its handwritten solution would cover the island of Manhattan.

When stored in highly compressed form on a computer hard drive, the solution takes up as much space as 45 days of continuous music in MP3 format.
[Uh, highly compressed form of what? What MP3 quality?]

wolftrap IS metro accessible...there's a very reliable bus that runs from West Falls Church metro to the Trap on show nights

Typically, lawn seats are cheaper than that. And the lawn at Wolftrap is much more fun that the seats anyway.

I think you are wrong. She is the one who has repeatedly insulted me (with the same repeated insult), and I finally felt goaded into a response. If anyone is owed an apology, it is me. Though I certainly don't expect one. Thanks for your opinion though.

I am excited that I have a child on the way. It's by far the single most important thing in my life right now. Yes, it does influence every decision I make, including what concerts I can go to. And thus, I should be able to express my joy, as well as my thoughts regarding the massive effects that having a child will have on my life, without being mocked and derided. Just like someone who blathers on about how important V-fest is to their lives doesn't deserve to get mocked or derided.

Her REPEATED jabs on this topic reek of jealousy and immaturity.

My last comments on the issue.

 - I did not mock or deride you.  I said you were annoying with the constant references (note I didn't even say you're an annoying person, but that the constant baby references are annoying).  I think that's not quite as mean as you insinuate, but if you believe I was actually nasty, I apologize.  I'm not a nasty person.  Nor immature and absolutely positively not jealous.  I've got a niece on the way (ineveitably within weeks of your progeny), my first, and I think that's absolutely perfect.  Somehow haven't mentioned it yet, even though it's HUGE in our family and I will likely be missing many many shows (and I actually see many many shows) to see and take care of her.

 - I do lose patience sometimes, and you've got a special knack.

 - The constant references are quite annoying and out of place -- this is a music board, and yet you bring up at what stage of gestation your child is or how old it will be nearly constantly -- for shows you don't give a shit about.  Just more chances to mention the baby.

 - Many of the longest standing board members have kids, mention them occasionally -- we love to hear about them, especially the birth announcements.  But they discuss other things, mostly music, on the board.  Yes, it's a phenomenal event in a life.  Does a board of music fans need to hear about EVERY show you can't make because of the one week old, the month old, the 7 month pregnant wife, the 8 month pregnant wife....?  You don't even go to many shows 'pre baby Rhett'.

 - Try  this. (http://pregnancy.bounty.com/parenting-resource-discussion-forum.html)   I think you need an outlet.

 - It's true, my fault.  After a couple years of just ignoring your rants and incendiary comments, you got me.  I gave you the attention from strangers you appear to so badly need.  Won't comment again.
 - Sorry to the rest of the board as well for bringing a 'feud' that we haven't seen much of late.

 And now, Lollapolooza or V-fest?!?!?!?!

This is kinda fun, doing your best to not 'comment' on the JA thread.  So, in doing --

I'm bummed I'm going to miss the Peter Bjorn and John show.  They got great buzz at SxSW.  I tried to fit them in, but their venue was too far from where I was before and wanted to be after.  Their show certainly comes highly recommended by many hardcore music fans, though...

Apology accepted, even if following it with a lengthy defense of your actions makes it seem halfhearted. I apologize for not controlling my anger better.

I read this board, and I see people talking about trips to Spain, sushi restaurants, fantasy baseball, tv shows, soccer. March madess, internet porn laws, and anything else under the sun that people feel like talking about. It seems like this is more or a rock community chatboard about any and all topics, rather than a music board.

I tend to go to a couple of shows a month, almost always with my wife. If I were single or married to someone who was more of a music scenester, I'd probably go to more. Whether I go to a show or not is directly impacted by what my wife wants to do, and thus being pregnant and having a child in the future is going to impact my every decision regarding shows. I've been a Smiths fan for 20 years, I've never seen the Smiths or Morrissey. I do like to go to shows at Wolftrap, but as I was pointing out, I'm not sure if it's a wise decision to take a one week old.

I have a number of friends who are having children or who have had children. If I mention anything kid related, they find it wonderful and precious. And when they talk abou their kids or pregnancies, I find it the same. Because you are not my friend, I don't expect you to be the same, but you could be more gracious.

People babble on this board about all kinds of annoying personal things. You're right, I have in the past responded to such annoyances in an inappropriate manner. But I think I'm doing a better job of ignoring such annoyances as time goes by.

And lastly, the responsiblities of being an aunt is not even comparable to the responsibilities of being a mother. I'm sure you didn't mean to imply that.

I think I would do an ok job with more money/venue support. I curated a much more modest fest last year with virtually no money, granted with more locals than an ATP would have included. We are actually working hard to get some "old" DC artists for this year. But it won't be anywhere near an ATP sized event. Not yet anyway...

Anyone headed to the club that would be willing topick me up some tickets? The price for Air is much higher than I anticipated and I'd like to cut costs by avoiding the high fees. (I need one other show [ticket] too:))
(Sorry if this commentary is OT in JA commentary)

dude, this aint news.  the purple one has been a Jehovahâ??s Witness nut-case for a while now.  there are several songs from his catalog (including the two mentioned above) that he will no longer play.  dunno if youâ??ve noticed, but he hasnâ??t released anything racy in years.  3121 only has mushy I-love-you songs (and get-the-party-started songs, of course).

he's disavowed his former sinful ways, heâ??s a man of god now...

I've known that for years now.  It just didn't sink in until the Musicology tour.  Then that public statement brought it all back.  Craziness.  Just a decade or so ago, my man was slutting out Carmen Electra and several starlets like her.  Now, he's knocking door to door in Minnesota spreading the gospel.  Maybe there's hope for my heethan ass yet . . .   :D

The 21 dates are all supposed to be in London.  In between the arena shows he'll be doing "surprise" dates at clubs around town.  I've heard this tour will likely continue and he'll eventually make it back over here.

Saw him 2 nights last time at MCI and it was most excellent. [/b]
i caught one of the two shows at MCI, and another in philly.  it was my first time seeing him perform - those shows totally floored me, the MCI show was one of my all-time top 3 concerts.  i'd LOVE to see him in a small club packed with fans.
