I seem to recall him saying they went on 10-15 minutes before the posted start time. Perhaps he's reminding people who like the band to get there to see that.

I wouldn't say forgettable, but I would say that unless you get there early (they started ahead of the set time) and get near the front (the majority of the crowd, especially in the back of the arena, had no interest in SSPU) you will be surrounded by teenie boppers, chatters and backwards hat wearing folk and not be able to enjoy the SSPU show at all.
I was towards the back in SF.
-
i'll be there... it would be nice if they'd play more than 40 min.!
-
cool, now that we've got the SSPU's situation all sorted out, let's get back to the real question at hand: betty's choice of clothing (or lack thereof) on friday.
betty?
-
i'll be up front dancing and taking pictures for my photography portfolio, LIKELY wearing something short...

Spring began after sunset last night. So it's kosher this year ;)

I always wondered. Is your screenname a reference to that Paul Simon joint, "You Can Call Me Al.???" For some reason, that's the first thing that pops up in my head when I see your name . . .
-
(boy) "You be Betty!"
(girl) "I'll be Betty!"
(boy) "I'll play Joe!"
(girl) "You play Joe!"

THANKS a.
it's from the Ben Kweller song "Hospital Bed"...

Word. I'll make sure to check it out . . . The curiousity about your name's been lingerin' at the back of my brain since I started posting here . . .

where is the link to that list of maryland sex offenders when we need it?

and i seem to remember that betty is of jewish decent, thus making her doubley kosher! or kosher square... square kosher - a square who is kosher?!? technically, doesn't one "keep kosher"?!? wait, i was heading somewhere with this, no really, i was... <cue fx: sound of frying/electric fire, and smoke pouring out of sweetcell's ears>
-
one does "keep kosher."
-
I just listened to SS Pickups couple nights ago...wow, they´re GARBAGE!
-
I'll be there, for all three bands.
Probably a crazy question, but does anyone know set times?

So I'm assuming there's no beer since this is at a college? I'm deciding whether or not to drive my humongous and luxurious Escalade.
-
word is no beer.

8:20 OKGO
9:35 Snow Patrol

that's going to be annoying.

Any former AU students who know if I can park in the garage attached to Bender Arena/Graydon, or park over in the Wisconsin Ave parking lot?
If I can get in the garage, advice on getting to it?
THANKS
-
Flipping the dial I heard mention of SSPU on DC101 today - 2PM I think.
-
I thought about going a while back, because I actually really like Snow Patrol and have never seen them. But the prospect of having to find tickets (the face value of which is already fairly ridiculous) drove me away.
Instead, I'll be having a blast at the Recher. Reverend Horton Heat and Murder By Death, anyone? Anyone?
-
help - is it GA?
-
I go to Recher for the smoke.
-
betty - don't you have tickets? if so, read them. otherwise, ticketmaster will tell you. i won't, in retaliation for you not telling us what you'll be wearing.
-
my friend has the tickets.
and jesus christ, how old are you?
but for your information i still DO NOT KNOW WHAT i will wear yet! depends on whether it's raining in an hour.
-
Didn't someone on here once day I looked like the guy on the left? Good thing I changed my hairstyle!

excuse my ignorance, but is Betty hot?, given the fact that you can speculate of what she will be wearing tonight??
-
How long until we see a "Is Betty Hot or Not?" thread from Dupek?
-
I think she is...

betty, i'm not serious... it's become a meme, or i'm trying to make it one (so far so good!). i don't care what you wear. i'll be at the show with my girlfriend, who will ensure that i stay in line. i'm a rather poor leech anyways. i woulnd't mind meeting you, if only to report back to the board on what you did chose to wear :) age? thirties, but tend to act 14 as i'm sure you've noticed.
and to answer your question: yes, the show is all GA, no assigned seats. get there early and stake out a good spot. i'm definitely looking forward to the show!
-
which makes you about twice as old as Betty...
-
i have no idea whether i'm hot or not; i usually tend not to form relationships with people that are dependant upon superficial aspects. i am wearing a plaid mens shirt, shorts, and ridiculously sparkly shoes. so if you see me say say hi, don't be a stranger..please don't stalk me...have a good evening all
-
I also, for the record, have no real interest in Betty, it's just an on-going joke or meme like sweetcell said. I don't know what she even looks like, and because of her age, it's pretty irrelevant anyway. So, no stalking to fear, at least from me.
-
i know you're kidding. i am kidding too. and i am highly amused :)

Then you should have been there last night, there was plenty of it. I heard that Maryland was going to vote on a smoking ban like DC's, anyone have any idea what's going on with that?

Apparently it is going to pass. They are just trying to compromise between two versions in the legislature. It has enough votes to pass.
-
How was the show?
-
both good and bad.
the bands played excellently. Silversun rocked the fucking house down and OK Go played a cover of one of my favorite songs of all time and i thought Snow Patrol would be a snoozefest but they were actually pretty awesome.
on the other hand, the place was jam-packed with abnormal amounts of rude, territorial people. there were a lot of really bratty college kids. i was up front for the first two bands and then gave up and moved much further back. chicks around me kept fighting because people wanted to get in front. they needed to grow up and arrive earlier if that was the issue. but then, when i moved back, it was all middle aged couples making out and groping...putting their hands in the pockets of their companion's matching $300 jeans...
i really appreciate the black cat.
-
Did anyone go to the SSPU in-store?
-
SSPU put on a very solid performance, i was rather impressed especially after smakie's warning. i've never seem them perform, but would love to again in a small venue... not sure if i could drag myself all the way to the recher tho.
OK Go's first three songs were abysmal, but they turned it around thereafter - the crowd warmed up to them eventually, even though they were clearly there to see SP. fun stage gimmicks, like a video from a camera on the singer's mike projected on to a 30-foot screen behind him, or asking everyone to hold up their cellphones (place looks like a giant xmas tree had been tipped over).
snow patrol were, well, snow patrol; if you like their music they delivered in spades. they were obviously having a great time up there, gary's voice was in good shape. the girl who was pulled from the crowd to sing "set the fire to the third bar" (she had a sign saying she wanted to sing) did a bang-up job of it. gary's crowd banter was spot-on and very funny.

<joking>you should have come over and said "hi"!</joking> hum, i didn't notice that much groping, but the were indeed a lot of dudes with their arms wrapped around the lady in front of them... to be expected, given SP's music and fan-base. we were about half-way back, second row seats - we had a great view since we were raised off the floor just a little. sound at bender was acceptable where we were.

We sat in the stands, up at the very top (which was cool because you can see well, and you can stand and the fuddies behind you won't yell). I've seen OK Go and Snow Patrol each so many times, I didn't need to fight the 'amateur' rock crowd. Betty, it happens all the time at shows like this; you get so many folks who go to just a couple shows a year, and they're not good with the concert etiquette. Because it's one of their two 2007 shows, they DESERVE to push up/be territorial/blah blah.
Silversun Pickups was good, but all I could think was "I can't wait to see this band at the Black Cat or 9:30." Granted, I was pretty far back, and they rocked pretty well, but their 'reach' isn't quite arena size yet.
Meanwhile, OK Go has really grown in to arena shows. From someone pretty far back, they really reached out and pulled you in. It took a few songs to get going, but I was impressed and psyched for them.
Similarly for Snow Patrol. They've gotten good at these big shows. Gary's great, has so much fun, and is a joy to listen to (both singing and banter). AND, he endeared himself to me all the more for being SO impressed at meeting Bob Mould. He gave Bob a huge shoutout (mentioning both Husker and Sugar), and noted that Copper Blue was an album he listened to endlessly. I loved that. Of course, they no longer play "Wow," my fave song (I much prefer "Final Straw" to the new Eyes album...).
Good show, Bender isn't a great venue, but getting in and out was no problem. Got a space in the garage attached to Bender, so we didn't even need to worry about the rain.

leafblower, your pictures are GREAT. Very cool.

SS Pickups have played the Black Cat backstage last year...

Yes I did. I shot the show for DCist. We'll have a review later today.
-
I know, I didn't know them then... I'd assume they'd still play BC mainstage on their own, though.
