Anyone going? The Joggers got a little write up in the Post on Sunday.
Do people think this will sell out? - I would think yes if the backstage only holds 150 people.
-
i am almost certain it will sell out

But you are a known pessimist.
Although the guy on the door at the blackcat said there had been some buzz for the show and he recommended getting there reasonably early.
That said there is so much other stuff going on tomorrow night.
-
I'll be there.
Can you buy tickets in advance for Backstage shows?

Can you buy tickets in advance for Backstage shows?
I don't think so - will this literally be a queue up at 8 to get tickets at 8.30 to get in or is there any chance they sell tix a little early so I could pick them up on the way home from work?
-
No, you cannot buy tickets in advance for Backstage shows. You have to wait until they open the door and pay there at the Backstage entrance.
Nope, not going. Next week will be my killer week.
-
The last backstage queue I was in, the doors opened at 8.30. The red room bar opens at 8. I recommend getting to the red room before 8.30 and standing near the backstage entrance at or before 8.25.
There are no tickets or presales, you just pay as you go into the backstage area.
-
Man, I guess it's pointless to try and make it to both shows tomorrow...
Any chance I could show up at 8:30, pay to get in, rush to 9:30 for the show, and then make it back in time? It's been a while since I've been to the Backstage...do they just stamp your hand?

I plan to just pull a bar stool in front of the backstage door at 8, that's not annoying is it? This show should really be upstairs.
Maybe Arlo will go on really late and there will be time to catch them at the Velvet Lounge afterward.
-
I intend to go, I have really been enjoying both albums. Much to "who am I's" annoyance, who says he played me them ages ago and I said they were shit.
he remembers that, but he doesnt remember to give me his emusic password. What a git.
I was debating some kind of NKOTB, or Who am I double show. I guess who am I's is the one I am leaning toward most.
But the decemberists are by far and away my main priority. Mostly because they are not all that attractive, so I dont think my wife will hit on them. Oh little joy.

Is she still around??
I heard she ran off to become the tambourine player and full-time groupie for the High Strung.
-
I see that you're still high strung over that, Markie.
-
I can't believe Arlo is playing the Lounge and nobody noted it here on the boards! Arlo is really good, I'm going to THAT!!
Does *anyone* have *any* idea when they might go on tomorrow night?
And Dressy Bessy's at the Lounge tonight!!??!! Man I've fallen down on the job.
-
Actually, it turned out she had no rythm so the tambourine thing was a complete train wreck.
Actually she is in NY today meeting an old friend.....Or that is what she says.

So where are they playing tonight? The Bowery Ballroom?

Allegedly they wear nice "jumpers."
And engage in mid-set fisticuffs.

Arlo were entertaining last time, with their fight and all. But, if you listen to Arlo's albums vs the Decemberists, I would think you were crazy for going to Arlo.
The lower down the food chain concerts go, the more unpredictable set times are, or even set listings.

They are not playing, but then you wouldnt want music to get in the way of "socializing", would you?

Although they aren't "playing," they are in NYC.

My bad, thought I was keeping up, but obviously not.
RE: Arlo vs. The Demberists, I can't get anywhere until after 10:30, so I'm assuming I won't be able to get in to the Decemberists show. And I have "Stab the Unstoppable Hero" and I really, really like it, so it's a nice fit for me.

Ok you are forgiven.
You should be Ok for Arlo, well unless they go on first.
I guess there is always B&S at that time as well.

Gee, up to $8 an hour. Is that what porno is paying now? I knew it was cheap, but that's pretty low.
-
my life is such easier tomorrow... Eddie Izzard and nothing else. with IPO in balto taking up at least three nights up thurs to sunday i have no business trying to fit anything else tomorrow...
-
I'm catching Izzard tonight. Can't wait! Maybe Dressy Bessy afterwards, but I doubt it.

Oh really jag....how did you know? ;)

I read elsewhere that at recent shows the Decemberists have only been playing about 4 songs from the older material and sticking to mostly the new album, the excuse at those shows was that one of their guitar players was not with them so they could not do the older songs.
-

not do the older songs.
as long as it is tracks 2/3/8/10 I will be a happy boy.
-
it would make perfect sense for this show to be moved to the mainstage. maybe all those that got shut out of the b&s show will go to this show instead. i don't wanna show up early and still not get in. hopefully 8 will be early enough.
-
Is anyone playing the main stage tonight?
-
not according to the schedule
-
heard rumors that the decemberists may have cacelled tonight due to sickness, can anyone confirm?
-
Great show. I called the Velvet Lounge and turned out that Arlo was having problems and would probably go on last (meaning midnight or so), so I took a shot and went by the Black Cat. So happy I did. Really liked the Decemberists. The Joggers were fun too -- did some pretty interesting whippenpoof-type rounds singing and harmonies.
Okay, back to the Decemberists. So any of you know the Whitlams from Australia? The similarities (especially Colin Meloy's vocals) are almost uncanny.

Decemberists were great, not the setlist I would have picked, but they were still great, they could have played 2 more hours and I would not have been bored.
Did not like the Joggers though.
Then went over to velvet lounge to see arlo, and after sitting through 2 songs by the awful opener arlo came on stage to about 5 people. Apparently everyone there before was there for the local band, and they all left before Arlo. Arlo only played about half an hour until one of the guitarists broke the same string on two guitars and they called it quits. What they played was good though, although they did not get to playing Culture.
-
yeah the joggers were crap - decemberists were great though - hopefully by the next time trhey come into town they'll be playing upstairs
nice to finally meet some regulars even if the timing was a bit inopportune for markie!

Here is the Post on the Joggers:
HAS THE WORLD RUN OUT of good band names? The Joggers make you wonder. But if this Portland, Ore., quartet has botched the easy part of starting a group -- a handle that grabs -- it's done remarkable work on the hard part, namely, recording a mighty fine debut album. You know something interesting is happening from the first track, "Loosen Up," a jangly, drumless tune that summons the spirit of Pink Floyd's early years, when the famously loony Syd Barrett was in charge. The rest of "Solid Guild" is fleeter and feels like state-of-the-art college rock, with beats that stutter and surge on a dime, plus lots of splintered guitars. Ignore the silly name: These guys know what they're doing.
That description bears no resemblance to the band that opened for the Decemberists last night.
The Decemberists were excellent, cramped space and all. I thought it was appropriate that a band that sings shanties about Turkish prostitutes, lonely widows and "chimbley" sweeps would have a singer that still looked peaked with the flu and a guitar player on crutches.
Good to meet brennser.
-
Lets see.....
Poorlulu, I am glad you liked your picture..... You can barely even see the pretty one in it.
Brennser, It was nice meeting you. Next time you are alone for a show we should meet up. Hopefully next time you wont catch me fondling GGW and Jadetree.
I thought the joggers singer couldnt sing, but he sounded ok when they went accapella. Maybe they sound better in a better space? I really doubt it though.
The decemberists did a great job. The guy said that hopefully they will be back in March. I will need to think of some better heckles by then. Apparently how is your camel is no good.
But why oh why did they play such a short set and avoid two of their most obvious songs?
Seeing Arlo afterward was an added bonus. I felt sorry for them having such a small crowd. I was glad we made the effort. They sounded better than before though, although as seems to be their wont, they only managed six songs before falling apart.
-
DOH! The joggers are opening for Ted Leo.
-
I am so impressed with you. I *almost* did it, almost went to Velvet, but I started to worry about my work day today. I'm an ass. Hope they come through again soon.

Wish I'd known y'all were there! It was a last minute decision for me, though. Another time. Did either of you make a spectacle in any way? (Though I was back near the door for Decemberists -- didn't feel the need to push up, so I could only see Colin and the bassist).
Bought both CDs after the show.

Well I was the one who shouted how is your camel? when he came back for the encore......
Next time we should arrange to say hi.
-
I forgot, I almost pissed myself when they did the squeeze cover........ I love up the junction, next time I will be heckling goodbye girl.
Best of all was I lent Jadetree (who am i?) the squeeze hits album, 45's and under, and he just took the piss out of me.
-
Was I at the same show? The Joggers were fantastic (had never heard them before). From where I was standing, right up front, the vocals were way too low, but besides that they ripped it up. The Decemberists as well. Beautiful stuff... the songs... not them. Great show, but why oh why was it on the backstage?? So frustrating. Everyone was cramped, hot, annoyed, and not buying beer. The band themselves made a comment about not having enough room.

You should have seen Warlocks trying to get all their 7 or 8 members on the backstage. They tripped a fuse/breaker almost immediately after starting to play.
-
As an FYI, I'm not sure the backstage ever sold out (certainly not by 8:30, as predicted by some). yes, the show was well attended, but they were still letting people in as late as 10:30 (i was right inside the door and saw the exchange of cash....).
I'm sure they were near capacity, though.

Decemberists, Taking The Chill Out of the Air
Thursday, October 30, 2003; Page C07
When it comes to rock, Colin Meloy has a few disadvantages. First, he looks like a graduate student in creative writing. Second, he is (or was, anyway) a graduate student in creative writing. But Tuesday on the Black Cat's backstage, Meloy -- who writes and sings for Portland, Ore., folk/pop upstarts the Decemberists -- demonstrated that an arts degree need not automatically disqualify one from a career in the arts.
Oh, Meloy strives for insufferableness. He much prefers the 19th century to our own, and, if his lyrics are any guide, he harbors a very un-pop interest in Victorian child labor practices. Furthermore, he has no discernible sense of humor.
But there's no debating Meloy's knack for writing irrepressibly catchy songs. Tuesday, the five-piece band played songs from its two full-length CDs along with a very apropos -- given the crowded conditions onstage and in the audience -- cover of Squeeze's "Up the Junction."
Highlights included the Belle and Sebastian-flavored "The Soldiering Life," a rendition of "The Gymnast, High Above the Ground" that featured some taut-as-a-high wire upright bass work by Jesse Emerson and a chorus as giddy-making as the view from any trapeze, and a very Pogues-like "The Chimbley Sweep," which may just be the sprightliest song ever written about abject wretchedness. But the showstopper was the dramatic "I Was Meant for the Stage," during which the band kicked up a ruckus and Meloy proved that, trapped inside that Dickens-loving exterior, there's a Rufus Wainwright trying to get out.

Is this perhaps a nod to Markie's attempted "camel" dialogue?
-
more likely due to singing such absurdist lyrics without cracking a smile, dont you think?
