It can't be very often in one's life that 2 of your favorite bands/artists release records on the same day. But lucky me - it's happening in just a few days & I'm counting down the hours.
Drive-By Truckers The Dirty South (New West)
The Twilight Singers She Loves You (Birdman/One Little Indian)
I haven't been this excited about a trip to the record store since...maybe ever. Hopefully I can find somewhere sellling these at midnight on Monday! :)
8/24 releases (http://www.icemagazine.com/dates/release209.asp)
I bet there's a few other things on that list that get interest. Maybe a little:
Twisted Sister Still Hungry (CD/DVD combo)

Two more stellar (well early reviews say they are) albums come out the same day: Tift Merritt's new one on Lost Highway, and the Sadies new one on YepRoc.

Just got the Sadies CD to review, but I haven't heard it yet. Yep Roc loves BigYawn....

They were hyping it big when I was up in Toronto last week (guess it got an earlier release up there). But then again, Toronto is their hometown. They were also making a big fuss about the new Hidden Cameras album...also from Toronto.

Oh, and the Wicker Park soundtrack looks awesome and is out on tuesday as well. Including the Postal Service covering Phil Collins "take a look at me now"... which I am very very excited about.
-
I'm listening to that cover now, and it's pretty terrible. I never thought I would say this, but this has me missing Phil Collins. And I like the Postal Service and Death Cab, but man, sometimes Gibbard just sounds too faggy.

The expanded version of Jeff Buckley's Grace also comes out on Tuesday. It includes a previously unreleased track, "Forget Her" and a bonus DVD. I will be purchasing it while cursing Mary Guibert.

We've got some serious overlap in our musical tastes RC...I loved JB. One of my best shows ever @ the old 9:30.

Steve Earle's album also comes out Tuesday. Though it sucks.

Yeah, I'm slowly getting to that point. I wish I could have stopped at MWB. Mary Guibert is the alt-rock version of Tupac's mother.

I think they finished their show at the Black Cat with this, it was some cheesy cover, it was the worst part of the show by far

Only 3 more days until the Fall music harvest! :D
Good call on this Rhett - just another one to pick up - I'm all about efficient record store trips:
Here's what the press has to say about Tambourine (by Tift Merritt) so far:
"File this one smack in between Lucinda's Car Wheels on A Gravel Road and
Shelby's I Am Shelby Lynne--Very cool album!" - Rita Houston, WFUV/NYC
"Merritt's voice is a magical combination of cool reserve and effortless
warmthâ?¦" A- - Entertainment Weekly
"Strike the posers this month, reality music returnsâ?¦Producer George Drakoulias
brings Tift Merritt's fantastic voice up front in the sparkling Tambourine."-
Vanity Fair
"â?¦Stax-style R&B tunes complete with slinky horns and sultry background singers.
If you're picturing Dusty Springfield fronting Creedence Clearwater Revival,
you're rightâ?¦" - Esquire
"â?¦Tambourine (Lost Highway), comes close to realizing Merritt's musical ideal:
the melodic longing of Carole King, the honest ache of Dusty Springfield, and
the lived-in dynamics of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends." - Harp Magazine
"Her new guitar-tinged soul songs sound as if they came right out of the Stax
Records catalog." - NY Daily News
-
I had not even noticed, but the new Clinic album comes out tomorrow as well.
-
I listened to a few cuts off of an advance copy of this one. I liked her first album alot, but this one strikes me as a blatant grab at mainstream success, upon first listen. She shore do look cute in the photo on the cover though.

Sounds like:

Maybe I'll hold off.
I'm very interested in the Clinic also.

Then don't listen to his records, dimwit. I don't care what you meant (sensing future "I'm not homophobic" posts), but the last thing we need here are homophobic comments. These forums are about music, and no one wants to feel bad about themselves in the process...

The dude uses the words "slacks," "caps," "waterwings" in songs. That's faggy.
Besides, some of my best friends are gay...

Gibbard sounds about as masculine as a hippopotamus in a pink tutu.

I already called the posthumous "I'm not homophobic" comments so you can't say that! That's always the excuse! But okay, I know, I'm being too sensitive, but think about some poor young kid who's reading these posts who has no idea you're being tongue-in-cheek. Use the word "fey." Ha, ha, ha.
All in all, it's still no excuse. Sure, Gibbard's lyrics are a little over-the-top, but it would also get awfully annoying if every record had the lyrical premise of Ludacris's "Move Bitch!"

Yes, and I can't figure out how to quote people in bold letters like the rest of all y'all.

See? A MUCH better comparison. "Faggy" just sends chills down my spine, unless you're Stephen Colbert or Dave Chappelle. They get paid for it, and they're much more clever.
-
Thirsty gives me a five spot every time I use that word around him. Blame him for it.
Besides, how do you know I'm not gay, and thus culturally able to use any derogatory word I choose to empower myself?

You've got a crisp Lincoln comin' your way. Anyone hear the gay as a whistle story on This American Life?

Like I said before: think of how you would feel if you were young, closeted, were stoked to read about music and the club away from hell, and were STILL haunted by such words? I'm none of the above, but I know I'm still being too sensitive. Don't worry, I'm not militant or anything so I'll shut up. I'm gay but very un-PC. I love offense, and I think everything needs to be made fun of. But I make sure I do it around people I know.

Nkotbie, this all stems from my feelings for you. I think you're incredibly handsome and would love a date with you. I was just trying to figure out if you were gay or not. So, how about it?

Whattya think of this new Bloodshot release Mr. Miller?
Nora O'Connor ~ 'Til the Dawn (http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/newreleases.php3)
(Includes a link to hear a sample)
For years around Chicago, Nora has been an in-demand hired assassin of singing to the hit-making hoi polloi, but now it is time (long overdue) for her to scootch over just a little bit to center stage where she belongs. We are pleased to present her first solo CD 'TIL THE DAWN. This absolutely enchanting CD features O'Connor-penned urban honky-tonk originals like "My Backyard," Blue Ridge mountain-style harmonizing on "Nightingale," SoCal-country flavor on the Fleetwood Mac cover "That's Alright," and truly uptown citified-soul on Ketty Lester's "Love Letters."
Helping her out in this endeavor (finding people willing to do favors for Nora is pretty easy) are some of Chicago's finest. Andrew Bird, Gerald O'Dowd (Robbie Fulks' drummer), Kelly Hogan, Grant Tye (Robbie's guitarist), Andy Hopkins, and Scott Ligon all add to the great karmic wheel that is the music family of Chicago and whose talents make this a sultry, alluring little record.
'TIL THE DAWN has style and grit -- and *finally* spotlights Nora's amazingly sweet, yet deliciously salty, beautiful soaring blackbird of a voice. Props are long overdue.
"A solo calling card that is almost startling in its assured delivery and freshness...O'Connor exudes warmth, romance, and optimism and shines brightly form start to finish. 4 stars." Tim Sheridan MOJO
"It succeeds beyond words...It is solid and versatile, as well as subtly yet disarmingly sexy." Michael Metivier PopMatters
"Proves she's a serious and talented frontperson...Her emotional voice is light and airy but reveals a dusky jazzy undertone similar to a combination of Norah Jones, Rickie Lee Jones, and Lori Carson...The band perfectly augments each cut, neither overplaying nor laying back. Sweet yet with a tangy aftertaste, O'Connor's record is a subtly sparking gem." Hal Horowitz All Music Guide
"With repeated listening you'll find you'll understand that's she's worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with her labelmates Neko Case, Kelly Hogan, and Sally Timms. " Vitas Zebraitis Glorious Noise

Well, Mr Grotty, I'm intrigued. I only have her on a couple of comilations, and from what I remember, she was pretty good. But there are so many good records coming out right now, I'm going to have to be prudent and selective and deliberate in my purchases, so as not to go broke.
She's playing the Bloodshot party at CMJ this year, would be neat to see her there, but don't know if finances and scheduling are favorable for that.

Mankie, why didn't you tell us that you were interviewed by the BBC?
"It's unfair because faggots were a British delicacy long before any of the others."
