I second that.

Yeah really way to many to mention. So fare this decade I've pretty much discovered that I hate most new music,

without a doubt the arctic monkeys

the strokes.

I miss Elliott Smith. In the grand scheme of things, I just don't find that a lot of these bands have mastered playing their instruments well. Maybe too many rely on computers or Pro-Tools to write songs. When I heard Bright Eyes compared to Elliott Smith I bought one of his CDs and there wasn't even a comparison there. Elliott's mid-to-later work may rip off the Beatles (George Harrison esp.) but it's still genius.

The thing about that infamous CYHSY review is a good chuck of it is the author blathering on about how this band got so much attention for their self released CD, without press releases, PR, etc... How is so "refreshing" to a hear a band with out the preceeding hype build up. Not really sure how that garners them a 9.0 as there a plenty of bands out there with remarkable albums without PR folks... You might as well call CYHSY the O.A.R. of indie rock

Their cover of Jethro Tull's "Too Old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die" was a brilliant stripped down version with their own signature to it.

Hell yes. Many pull from Elliott, but not too many realize it.
I would have voted Clap Yer Paws too.

no questions.
arctic monkeys.

I bet if you polled the general population, less than 2% would have heard of either Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah or the Arctic Monkeys.

That number is skewed by the teenage girls like Betty, Grace, and Brennser.

I would like to point out that Death Cab isn't even in my top fifteen. And really, I hardly think they're extremely overrated, they have released some very solid albums.
My vote is for the ARctic Monkeys.
-
I'm also adding a vote for the Strokes.

I can't even make it through one of their sound clips.
-
First thought I had was that Talking Heads did it much better 25 years ago. I'd much rather listen to "Fear of Music" any day.
-
Strokes, Bloc Party, and Clap Your Hands. Or any of these bands that you can't distinguish from the late-70's-early-80's bands they mimic embarrassingly well. Its just gotten old.
-
I contribute so little to the 9:30 last.fm charts... guess that makes me out of step :)
-
That must make our Callat703 an avid teenage girl, too :)
1) What makes you say that Death Cab is overrated? I think for many years, they were actually quite underrated.
2) How does opening for Kelly Clarkson make you overrated? Or, I'll state this differently. How does being stuck on a tour by your overbearing label convert to critical acclaim?
And Bright Eyes is my overrated pick. Hands down. The guy can write a good song and yeah he was/is young, but he's not Jesus. Bob Dylan was young too...
-
Sufjan Stevens by a mile, if you're measuring "overrated" by critical acclaim.
If you're measuring by popular acclaim, Keane, Snow Patrol.
-
CYHSY
Surfjan Stevens
Bloc Party
Mars Volta
Flaming Lips
Bright Eyes
Mountain Goats
Arctic Monkeys

you all are a bunch of whiny vaginas ... and i'll stand up for CYHSY: it's a really good album, they just flew too high too soon

Why do you need new bands? Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974. It's a scientific fact.

Yea but I forgot, this thread is titled bands of the new millenium/decade so the guy has a point.
As for Mars Volta, they're not part of any defined genre I'm aware of as they seem to be on a planet of their own, so yea, I'd absolutely file them under the blanket "indie" term. That and they always seem to be playing Coachella, Bonarro or Lollapalooza. ;)

Despite the hype, I found Margot and the Nuclear So & Sos to be terrible post-emo garbage.
-
For me, its the Shins.

where is the hype on them? I must have eliminated sources of hype from my life because the only person I have heard they were good from is Brennser, he is a hype machine
and I actually do like them, and have disliked most of the stuff being discussed on the board this year

i'd have to agree...zero hype here

All Music said "What The Dust of Retreat does for indie rock in 2006 is almost everything Neutral Milk Hotel wanted to do in 1998 with In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." I mean, give me a break.
-
No, they're actually one of the few good indie bands.

did you ever consider maybe Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of the most overhyped records of all time? I mean I loved that album, but its held up as the indie holy grail far too often
I hardly consider an allmusic review as being overhyped, I dont think many people read those, I usually just go there for basic biographical information or to see the discography
but I also understand a negative association with a band based on something like that
I knew very little about Margot before listening to them, and probably only like half the album, but the last couple of years of music that seems to be about as good as it gets for me, at least there is some hope, I heard a clip of a High Strung song on Mtv the other day, dont even know what show it was on

come on now ... you're really saying there hasn't been an album (or a few) in the last couple of years that you didn't like front to back?

sure there have been a few, but not anywhere near as many as a few years ago
in 2005 and 2006 off the top of my head, albums good all the way through:
The Oranges Band - The World and Everything In It
Deadboy and the elephantmen
The HIgh Strung - Moxie Bravo
Go Betweens - Oceans Apart
The National - Alligator
