Anyone else going? I'm crazy excited about this show, but sadly, all of my friends listen to nothing but american shite. I don't post much, but have been reading this board for months. As a last ditch effort I figured I'd see if I'd meet some of the Britphiles I know are on this messageboard.

yes a few brits are going, look for a shandy drinker, thats mark.

If you don't know what shandy is, just listen out for the one with the big yap trying to be funny by heckling.
-
Oh thats rich coming from the two of you..........
I have never seen bungle drink more than one, I think it causes his fur to fall out.
Mankie has the biggest mouth in the whole of christendom and he thinks he is funny. You oughta go to the Libertines though Mankie.
I cant think of a good libertines heckle, "which one is Pete" could be interesting..... I have been looking forward to seeing the libertines for ages.
Oh and if you like the libertines you should like the high strung at the velvet lounge on Monday.........

Did I say you heckled? You are quite loud though. Normally I can tell you are in a club before seeing you, or even smelling you, poo.
So will ya come to the libertines?

Will I like them?? I trust yours and Jag's judgement on this you know that.
I will bring the missus if we go, I've had a couple of nights out while she stayed home which isn't fair, so we need babysitter and all that crap. We have to be selective on nights out these days because they're few and far between so can't waste them...if you know what I mean.

Honestly Mankie, I'm not too sure what you would think. I want to say they are both great and that you'd love them just to get you out with us. But thinking of your taste, I tend to think that you really won't be all that thrilled with either band but won't be all that disgusted either. If you go just to have a fun night out, that, you will probably have.
If I am perceiving this properly, British Sea Power will be kind of visual and put on a good rocking show with okay tunes. Some a little irritating, most okay, and some good. I've heard their live show is very good. I'm really hoping they play Spirit of St. Louis. I love that song! It's not on the album though, only on an EP or single. In fact, this is the band that I personally am going for.
The Libertines are good but not great. They are a bunch of rocking Cockneys. Have only heard very good reports about their recent live shows so I'm getting more psyched about seeing them than I had been. The only people I've heard really tearing them apart are my Northern English friends, and I think that's more a zenophobic thing against those from the Sarf. You understand, I'm sure.
Neither are a very serious band though they are both serious about rocking out and doing their part about helping everyone have a good time. And don't let reports scare you of one of the main guys not being with them because of his heroin addiction. He's a character and from what I can tell, the band are doing just fine without him. For all I know, maybe even better as their recent reviews are better than ever.
Yeah, come on out and play with us. Just go with the idea of having a good time with people you like and bands you couldn't care less about and you may end up having a much better time than you anticipate. Let it make up for your lost weekend, last week and the Mrs lost Radiohead gig.

Yeah Jag, you should have know that those Greater Mancunians only like the miserable tw*t bands! "A loaded gun won't set you free....so you say."

So I have been trying to rationalise my views on last night. But all the words I have sound far to effusive. But if I try and be nonchalant I am sure I will be castigated for being old and jaded.......
The first band: The living things...... Wow they were loud. Their enthusiastic brand of Jesus and Marychain tunes with the vocal skills of the guy from the sisters of mercy really annoyed me no end.
The second band: British sea power....... Well I was talking to Bumgle, sorry Bungle, before the show and he said "at their British shows they have been playing with lots of foliage onstage". I just kept thinking, " it 'aint half hot mum (http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/news/story/0,11711,1011753,00.html) ". He forgot to mention the great heron and the hawk. How the fuck could someone in the audience mistake the hawk for an owl? Do kids really learn nothing in schools today. (Jaguar you are forbidden from answering that). So they come on stage all without shoes all with their trousers tucked in their socks. For full effect the casio player had a 2nd world war steel helmet and when the casio wasnt needed marched up and down the stage with a drum, or towards the end marched into the crowd. The singer mimics Ian Curtis whilst sounding like the only other half decent Ian I know, McCulloch.
At this point you should be asking, why all this about the band without a mention of the music..... Well it sounded pretty good, but with all the distractions the music became less important. But I am sure it was pretty good. It certainly got my toes tapping and head a bobbing. I even bought 3 of the four CDs..... hands up the geeks who bought all 4 even though there were two versions of a single and only one track different? (Bob your outed).
The headliners: The libertines. Wow, I mean, huh, they were allright. They really tore into their albums worth of songs with an energy and swagger that in my opinion left most of the other shows I have ever seen looking and sounding a bit limp. There was no reply to any heckling, just the occasional smile. The audience did seam like they might have spent the whole day in the sun though. As one guy says to his friend " wow this band are better than the other two" Surprise dipshit, thats why they play last. Then people started calling out spacehog, why? Still at least the audience did manage to dance, or mosh or nod its head. Why cant you Americans learn to dance by jumping up and down, not by running side to side with your arms flailing?
Anyway the libertines played most of the album, went offstage for about five minutes and came back for a three song encore. Finishing with my favourite song of theirs.....
I get along singing my song,
People tell me I'm wrong..
Fuck 'em!
Perfect.
Thanks to everyone for coming out. It was sad saying bu-bye to Rose. I also felt bad for forgetting GGWs Cd and for losing Bungle so early in the night. But what a night.

Had a great time last night! I enjoyed all 3 bands but each on different levels. Met a girl who was at the NYC show, think she said Monday night, and said that the DC show was way better! :D Actually, cute guys abound all night long!)
Set lists......

Fear Of Drowning
Apologies
Spirit Of St. Louis
Rememeber Me
Bass Rock
Blackout
Carrion
Lately
Rock In A
The Libertines
Horror Show
Up The Bracket
Vertigo
Tell The King
Delaney
Death On The Stairs
Good Ole Days
Boys In The Band
May Day
Time For Heroes
Begging
Don't Look Back Into The Sun
Boy Looked At Johnny
Skag And Boneman
What A Waster
I Get Along
BTW, this was only a very, very limited US tour this time around for British Sea Power. I was told that they will be back in October headlining (which surprised me) for a full tour. As much as I like them, I don't know why they are headlining here yet because almost no one knows who they are. Good show!
Can't go without mentioning how good the canned music was last night both up and downstairs. Almost all 70s and early 80s Punk. The softer Punk, not the thrash LA type. Off hand, The Jam, X-Ray Spex, The Undertones, The Only Ones, and Richard Hell And The Voidoids.
-
that was a f@cking great show.......the crowd was fairly fun too.........
i really enjoyed british sea power..........couldn't help but think of ian curtis the whole way through though...
and the libertines were fantastic how hot is that guy?
talk about rock n'roll.........
although it's a bit sad to see regular board members obssessing with socks and shoes.......what's wrong markie.........is it all too much for you?

Did you think of looking in the mosh pit? Everyone else was close to their positions for British sea power. We waited around at the end looking for you too.
Yea I was looking forward to the Guy Chadwick and perfume CDs. If you are not coming for a show soon, you will have to come for a curry.
Dont like the clash? I hope you are kidding.
anyone who enjoyed the libertines would probably enjoy the high strung tomorrow at velvet lounge.

I hear more of The Jam than The Clash in their music. But being that Mick Jones of The Clash produced Up The Bracket, there is no way of getting away from The Clash comparisons.
See Mankie, if you wouldn't be so closed-minded, you wouldn't have missed a couple of the best bands to come out of England in the past couple of years! Now we just need for you to accept all of the new Great Scouse bands that are ready to conquer the states!!!!!! ;)
-
I think I enjoyed British Sea Power a little bit more than The Libertines, the Libertines were fantastic, for about 6 songs at the beginning and the end, but it gets a little boring after so much of the same thing. I thought I was about to see the best show in a long time after the first 3 Libertines songs in particular.
British Sea Power surprised me though, it is rare that I immediately like a band when seeing them live without ever hearing them before (well I had watched a video on NME a while ago and remembered liking it but did not remember the music at all).

Not to change the topic, but have any of you heard the new Snow Patrol album "Final Straw"? I'm listening to it now, and it's really good. In my opinion, much better than The Reindeer Section albums.

I know somebody who really likes Snow Patrol, I could never get into it, is the new one better than the old ones?

Hummmmmmm? Well, if you don't like the other two Snow Patrol albums, you probably won't like this one either. I just think that Gary Lightbody has a good voice and writes some lovely songs. Sorry to sound so wimpy, but it's true!

But if you like old punk rockers (which I do), Stiff Little Fingers has a new album out that rawks! It's called "Guitar And Drum"....buy the f*ckers cause the band needs your money.

Phew! Ended up heading down for the show regardless of being friendless for this one. Everything I hoped it could be! Living Things were alright, but I thought we could've done w/o the left wing rant. British Sea Power I was very impressed by, both stage show and music. I'm off to buy some of their stuff soon. The Libertines met all my expectations. Their setlist was extensive and tight. Their drummer is absolutely insane. Thankfully the crowd was into the music and I was in the thick of it (right next to the stage on the right). The girl next to me was from NY city but made the trip down cuz her concert was canceled due to the blackout. All in all it would've been a huge mistake for me to have missed this show. Come back soon Pete!

From the neck up, very cute.
From the neck down, fucking hot perfection!!! :o
Thirsty, when did you join the Royal Navy?
British Sea Power were sort of like the British Gilligan's Island except with cute British guys instead of American tourists. I kept thinking that they would be a great opening act for The Coral.
On a different note....I like Snow Patrol.

It really wasn't left wing but more anti-wing. Never-the-less, I still didn't want to hear any of it.
You were standing right with us then. That must be the girl who I was talking with for awhile. Very nice person. Hope she comes back this way for some more shows.

Yeah... at least they could have gotten their facts straight before getting so political ("war for f'in oil"... do your homework mate) Anyhow, great evening, but I loathe moshing. I had a good viewing spot, but within a few songs found myself on the other side of the room. Why must people who can't dance turn some events into a testosterone display? Especially annoying when I had a pint glass in my pocket, being too lazy to return it to the bar. Very glad I went, but wish I would have set up camp near the merchandise table in relative comfort.
-
Well, I am definitely glad I arranged my vacation so that I could return for this show. I literally stepped off the plane and went to the Black Cat. Terrific! I missed the first band. But was there for the fantastically intense British Sea Power complete with set decoration. Loved their setlist and especially the guy with the drum. I'm looking forward to their return. They definitely won over the crowd. (By the way, who was that enthusiastic fan next to you, Markie? It was nice to see someone shouting all the words.) And the Libertines were fantastic. I was skeptical going into the show because from what I've read, they had been hit or miss. Plus they've been hyped to no end, and the album is good but a little too polished for my tastes. But they were savage and tight and exciting on stage. I loved it. And what a reception from the crowd! I could tell the drummer especially was excited by the energy coming back at them. A great show! Let's hope they come back. (Oh and I thought the second guitarist was splendid. I'm not sure what Pete was like but this guy was really good.)

british seapower coming back in october :) the cd the decline of british seapower is released in september, so they will have something to promote, now if we can only get PURESSENCE to come over.

Libertines at the Black Cat
Rock wisdom holds that a band can only go as far as its drummer allows. For the Libertines, who have Gary Powell providing the backbeat, the sky's the limit.
The U.K. buzz band needs Powell to be at his thumping best these days, and so he was at the Black Cat on Saturday. The Libertines appeared without songwriter and guitarist Pete Doherty. Last week, Doherty pleaded guilty in London to stealing thousands of dollars of equipment from band mate Carl Barat's flat, and later blamed the criminal behavior on addictions to crack cocaine and heroin.
The Libertines have also done away with the British military uniforms worn in past performances and in music videos. The garb, along with being kitschy cool, made for a nice visual complement to the quartet's retro, fuzzy guitar-based sound, which updates the garage rock of, among others, Revolutionary-garbed elders Paul Revere and the Raiders. On "Horror Show" and "Up the Bracket," both played early in an hour-long set, Barat, now assuming the musical and vocal duties once provided by Doherty, sported a well-worn leather jacket, in which he shimmied across the stage in perfect time with Powell's banging blitzkrieg. That effort, combined with the heat in the jampacked upstairs room, eventually got the better of Barat, so he doffed his tough-guy get-up and danced bare-torso during the fab "Good Old Days."
The Libertines occasionally obscured the melodies and clever lyrics found in abundance on the group's splashy debut CD, also titled "Up the Bracket." But at several points the band managed to be both precious and raucous; "Don't Look Back Into the Sun" and "Boys in the Band" had fans tapping their toes on one verse, then slam-dancing into the strangers beside them the next. Powell's pounding on the encore of "What a Waster," which recalled the thrashiest Jam, provoked only the slamming.

Not much to add. Great show. Enjoyed British Sea Power. Excellent guitarist. Both singer and bassist looked like Iggy Pop if he went to college and just said no. Libertines rocked. I assumed the Spacehog calls were b/c the bassist looked like the guy from Spacehog (and he looked like he was trying to hard to look cool and Spacehog sucks). The drummer kicked ass (I didn't pick up how good he is from the CD or EP), the "lost Stroke" looking guy filled in well for Pete. Bonus points for holding a cigarette in his mouth while flailing around during songs AND while singing. Couldn't help but think how dynamic would be different w/ Pete there, but ignoring that, Carl works as the main man and it was a great high powered show.
-
I had a great time at the show and I danced a lot. And that was the first time I had heard any of bands. However, I couldn't help but think that the Libertines lacked substance. It struck me that the lead singer was only up there to get girls.

I had the good fortune of meeting and talking to the Libertines drummer for a while before the show. In addition to being an excellent musician, he is an exceedingly nice guy. His background is as a jazz drummer, mainly doing sessions. He was "drafted" by the band to give them some much-needed backbone.
I thought British Sea Power was excellent also. They cleared their merchandise off the table early though, so I didn't get a chance to buy any of the EPs. Have any of you who bought the EPs listened to them? How do they compare to the live show?

I have listened to a couple of them, Apologies to Insect Life is very good. I look forward to getting the whole album.

Namedropper!!! Did you get them out for the boys in the band?
I have given the British sea power singles a couple of spins. I think they are pretty good. Not as good as the live show though. I think they will grow on me more.

I really wanted to go but we couldn't get a babysitter at such short notice.
Great scouse bands huh? Echo & the bunnymen, Dead or Alive, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Flock of seagulls and the Mighty mighty wah all getting back together or something? Or are they just going to dig John and George up seeing as Liverpool can't seem to get past the cuddly mop-tops!

well hurrah for mentioning the mighty wah, pete wylie a true genius a guy whos music markie didnt like :D
