Title: Robert Randolph Presale
Post by: sdicicco on November 02, 2005, 02:26:00 pm
Anyone know how to get a password for the Robert Randolph presale?  I'm on the 930 club mailing list and the RRFB mailing list, but I don't remember seeing anything?

I never got Volume this month.  Bastards.

And this sale is hosing up the ticketing system all around.  Or whatever is going on right now.

The presale password was mailed out in Volume, which is the club's monthly paper newsletter.

I wasn't able to open up ticket purchacing windows for ANY show right after that pre-sale went up.  All of them went into the virtual waiting room thing that you normally see durring high volume sales (audioslave, beasties, foos, etc).

Even now, I can't open a ticket window for the New Years show.

I doubt it has anything to do with the RR show.  I tried to connect to tickets.com this afternoon for something else and got the Waiting Room too.  I never even got to choose an event.  There's gotta be something else going on at tickets.com today.

That's further than I got.  I couldn't even get to the tickets.com home page.  Just a blank blue page.

I respect Seth's decision to try to break away from the TicketMaster stranglehold, but, operationally, Tickets.com seems to have more than its share of problems.

If you haven't yet subscribed to Volume, you can usually pick it up at Tower Records.  I did not get mine in the mail yet either.  It usually arrives around a day after the presale starts.  Patience.

Looks like tickets.com is down altogether.

We're sorry. We are temporarily out of service with a system outage. We should be back online shortly. Thank you for your patience.

No, no, no!
Generic it's not, Robert Randolph is a pedal steel player but plays the instrument like no one else. He's the Jimi Hendix of the pedal steel and came out of the gospel "sacred steel" tradition but with a rock background too. An exceptional instrumentalist and charismatic performer, his shows have the same kind of uplifting energy as Al Green.

Oh, I'm sorry, let me re-phrase: african-american hippie shit.

M Ward is far from "hippie shit".

After a six-year stint with the trio Rodriguez, M. Ward began sketching out songs deeply rooted in the classic traditions of American country-folk. Rodriguez's home was in San Luis Obispo, CA, and they eventually recorded Swing Like a Metronome with Granddaddy's Jason Lytle.

And Robert Randolph, a steel pedal playing African-American, is far from generic, though there is hippie appeal.

Robert Randolph set the music world on fire in late 2000 and early 2001 when he began to play his first club dates in New York City. These were a result of being discovered playing his pedal steel guitar at the first Sacred Steel Convention in Florida in the spring of 2000. Randolph started playing the pedal steel as a teenager and started playing at his Orange, NJ, church just outside of Newark. The House of God Church, an African-American Pentecostal denomination, has been implementing steel guitars (or "Sacred Steel") in services since the '30s, with the pedal steel in particular being introduced during the '70s. Randolph learned to play by watching other steel players in his church.

Holy crap!  Have you ever seen this guy play?  He's fantastic.  Those comparisons aren't even close.

Actually, yes, I have been to a RR concert. Just because he plays "sacred steel" and happens to be African-American doesn't make it any less of a Bonnaroo hippie "light em up" act.

So are Old 97's, Joss Stone, Mars Volta, Rilo Kiley, Modest Mouse, and the Legendary Shack Shakers generic hippie acts as well? They all plated Bonaroo this year.

No, none of those are the traditional Bonnaroo-jam band type act, but you knew what I meant. When people say Bonnaroo, people think "jam band" or "damn hippie shit," not a few outlier bands that have played before. I could call a pop-punk band "generic warped tour tripe" and are you going to respond with, "oh, so they sound like eminem and limp bizkit," because they played a warped tour?

RR plays hippie jam shit, the kind where concerts last 2.5 hours and the setlist was only 8 songs. It's my contention it's hippie shit, and you're free to disagree, but you know darn well what I'm saying.

i think it's interesting how the flaming lips have been embraced by the jam band "hippie-shit" community ... it's a good match if you think about it, but a little odd nonetheless

I can see you guys like to bicker of genre....i for one don't care what you call it.

but i still would like the pre-sale password.  for a group who seems to think of themselves as a 'commumity' none of you seem to want to help.  if you have a password, wheather you want tickets or not to this 'jamband', help those out who do.

went did helping become such a challenge.  isn't this site devoted to music-lovers?

i don't get all the confrontation sometimes.  just another hippie thought i suppose....

Genre, Shmengre.  Good music is good music.  It's criminal to even say O.A.R. and Robert Randolph in the same sentence.

I was at Bonnaroo and the best shows I saw were Secret Machines and The Word (Robert Randolph, Luther et al from the North Mississippi Allstars, and John Medeski).  Could not be more different.

Sometimes people on this board (ergo people everywhere) get hung up on labels. My friends say Secret Machines are a Pink Floyd rip-off. They say RR&TFB are a hippie jam band.  Alrighty then, stay home and embrace your labels.  I kinda say that you have to experience it before you can judge.

Go see Robert Randolph. You may not have a musical epiphany, but it may come close.
