Anyone going? I liked them a lot when they opened for The Music and 10 bucks for three bands is a nice deal. I know nothing about Mad Action though. Are they along the same lines?
-
Im there. Loved them opening for The Music. The album is good, but they have a (well deserved) live reputation that far exceeds the album's quality. Lead singer is the only person on earth who can rock black pants, white shoes, a turtleneck tucked in and still look cool. Well, maybe it doesnt look cool, but it somehow works.
Expecting a phenomenal show....Bringing a bunch of friends who have never seen em. Reputation is on the line...
-
Mad Action hailing from Philly and once known as Ty Cobb are more heavy garage blues from what I heard on thier website. BMRC are big supports and they appear to be more well known in the UK at the moment.
I'm DJing tonight...

Bring ear plugs.
They were SO loud @ Coachella. My ears still hurt - seriously.
The singer said: "God Bless you Coachella" after EVERY song. I wanted to slap him.
One of my fav moments tho was when I was standing there feeling the sweat just running down my legs & the bearded - Black Crowes looking - multi instrumentalist stepped up & asked:
"Anybody got sweaty bollocks?!"

i do just can't promise i can honor them...
one for sure song tonight is The High "Box Set Go" and probably a MC5 song
-
I have seen Mad Action, I think they opened for somebody at the Black Cat, they did something weird with a projector, i dont remember being terribly impressed, but they were not horrible either
I believed one of them has a studio in Philly where BRMC was doing some recording

How about a leaked track from Oasis's new album? I could pm it to you...Think it would go over well with the crowd...Just an idea.

This is probably totally not appropriate for tonight's show, but last night I was listening to Bran Van 3000's "Drinking in L.A." and I thought, it'll be too bad if that song fades into complete obscurity. It's a great little song, if a bit of a novelty.
-
Man...Look what I started. I have a feeling thats why you dont do it. Lookin forward to tonight. See ya.
-
I'll be there tonight...I'm into Kasabian's record and it has Liam's Krusty Seal of Approval..what's not to love??
Next to last OC episode, dinner with friends and Kasabian for $10...shall be a good night, and I'll be flyering the show...which isn't fun but until we have a street team...

Cool. Youll love it. They will remind you of a few prominent British bands before them...
-
I'm sure they will...the singer sounds like the bastard child of Ian Brown and Tim Burgess with the bravado and swagger of Liam...all 3 of them frontmen staples in my book...

I'm a fan of Kasabian, but i'm certainly not going to pay money to see them live when all they'll do is play every single song from their one album. fuck that!

It's $10!!!!! How much did you pay for the CD? They're much better live.
You're right, wait and pay $50 when they come back with Oasis.
-
think i'll spin some SOAD tonight, seeing as Noel Gallagher thinks so highly of them....
As for SOAD, "After I heard System of a Down, I thought, Iā??m actually alive to hear the sh**iest band ever. Of all the bands that have gone before and all the bands thatā??ll be in the future, I was around when the worst was around.
-
Smackie and Fico: I knew I'd find you posting on this thread! I think we're triplets separated at birth when it comes to groups/styles we like. I am so there tonight...cannot WAIT to hear Club Foot LIVE!!!!
Their CD is phenominal - I've heard over 300 live bands this year and own thousands of CD's and I totally disagree with the poster who said Kasabian sounds like another group - except they use the same instruments and musical scales. They are wonderfully original/unique/entertaining musically and lyrically.
Hey Kosmo, special request: Life's an Ocean by the Verve: The sexiest song ever recorded. ;)
-
. . . . Except that they sound a whole lot like the Verve on a lot of songs (like the last 6 or so), exactly like BRMC (thus JAMC) on another and with some pretty strong Primal Scream and Stone Roses flourishes. Nothing wrong with it - at least the learned from the right sources. I'm looking forward to the show.

that's the best way to sum it up, they're completely derivative, but they've picked great influences ... fun band, great knack for writing pop hooks

When youre 50 and listening to an oldies station with your kids one of them ask you if you were around to remember Kasabian, you can tell them, "No, it wasnt worth $10 to me."
If you like the album, youll be blown away by them live.

Seriously!! what a tit this chap is..not paying $10 to see a band play their record?? so you only go to shows with bands with 2+ records?? weird approach...A good 40 minute set is more than enough from most bands for me...
Kasabian may not be the most original export..but the Stone Roses aren't around anymore, Primal Scream doesn't tour much...neither do the Charlatans, Blur or Oasis..this is pretty much what we get..and I'm happy as hale for it!

I also find it effective while discussing British bands, to actually speak as though youre British as well. I kid, I kid...
Dont know why Im spending time defending them (bored at work) but they do add a couple tracks that arent on the album as well.
'55' was one of their strongest songs of the set and its not on the album.

It's all the NMEs "fault"...did anyone get this month's "Q" with Coldplay on the cover? it has a Shaun Ryder chronology..he's aged pretty badly..looks like Darth Vader when they removed his mask...
also, the new Mojo with Oasis on the cover is a classic...and it seems Kele Okereke is gay...ah the tabloid gossip...
I'll be handing cds outside the show so say hi..and it's pronounced Fee-ko..not Fi-Co :p

Is Morrissey gay? Read somewhere that he was but Ive seen so many articles that contradict each other.
Dude, I need to go home.

for a while i think he claimed he was "asexual", like he had no sexual feelings at all for any gender or animal, but i think he now admits he's gay ... but i could be wrong on that ...

Back on topic. I'm definitely coming to check out Kasabian because I only hear good things about them from people who've gone before me. What about Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers and Mad Action? Are they local? Should I scarf down my dinner and make it to the club by 8 to see them?

im quite excited about tonight's show. a friend of mine in scotland wrote to say:
Kasabaian will puton a good show for you.I'd get along to see that if i could!!!.
i think he's right about this one! :) besides i never got to see the stone roses, so this could possibly be the closest ill come to that. although i did get to see ian brown who is quite the performer!

Nothing wrong with it..I'm 28 and in a rock band...they'll be the first ones to tell you their bassist (me) is AWOL every Thursday from 8 to 9...
If only the writers would bring back Alex and script some girl on girl between her and Summer i'd be in heaven...they could play Interpol's "evil" again and I wouldn't care...*wishfull thinking*..

very quickly Mad Action from Philly and friends of BRMC and I think Rock n' Roll solders are from Seattle old age is settling in. Was impressed with what i briefly hear. Both in the Garage and Heavy Blues school, the RnR Soldiers have a bit more swagger like Johnny thunder / New York Dolls.
-
IMHO - Mad Action stole the show....
-
IMHO, Kasabian kicked ass...it was an awesome, energetic show and better than some recent $20.+ line-ups...and yeah, I liked both opening acts, but I was thrilled that Kasabian sounded so good and they LOVED playing "our" venue. I was up front, and you could tell they were really happy...Great night..the last song was just amazing live.

I saw them at the Black Cat too! I think they opend for Clinic. They did have a screen b/c that is where the "drummer" was. Now that you mention it it is all coming back to me.

My DJ setlist will get posted this weekend... I left my notebook at home while in my early morning fog.

Great show from start to finish. Crowd was really really into it. There was more bouncing and fist-pumping than any other show Ive been to @ 930. Granted, I think there was a large contingent of Brits in the house.
Those guys just really put on a great show. Lead singer never stops and he's got a really great rock voice. They played around with a few songs that werent on the album and they were ok, but when they went back to LSF and Club Foot, the crowd just went nuts.
They definitely have an air of greatness about them. Id actually be surprised at this point if they dont really start making some major waves internationally. Great band. Great show. Im excited to see whats in store for these guys...
-
why did the show start so much earlier than 930.com posted? i got there at 915 when mad action was supposed to be going *on* and they were walking off the stage when i arrived!
-
I definitely agree with beedubyah's comments about the fantastic audience! Bounciest concert since The Hives last year at least. While I certainly like Kasabian's solid debut album and their catchy, beat-heavy songs, their album did not prepare me at all for one of the best 9:30 Club concerts of the year. I very nearly saw British Sea Power at the Black Cat instead, but I went with Kasabian for the simple reason that I've been listening more to Kasabian than British Sea Power this year. Needless to say, I don't regret my choice at all, though I am annoyed that both bands were scheduled for the same evening. Lead guitarist/songwriter Serge and frontman Tom Meighan performed with an exuberance that the audience fed off and returned many times over. The driving force for the dance milieu, however, was Kasabian's excellent drummer, Ian Matthews, but it was the enthusiastic audience which elevated Kasabian and were in turn elevated by them and made it such a memorable concert experience.
Opening act Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers attacked the audience and took no prisoners! They played fast, straight up, no-gimmicks rock that the audience warmed to almost immediately. They're probably the best opening act on a three-act bill that I've seen in a long time. They were soon followed by Mad Action, who were more reserved but more technically proficient. Both supporting acts were very strong, but I would probably give the edge to Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers. P.S. Nice job, DJing, Kosmo.

Told you guys. These guys are something special...
-
Glad to hear I'm not the only one that thinks Kasabian are brilliant. I concur that it was annoying to have two great British bands playing separate venues on the same night.
-
I concur with most of the other comments. I thought they were even better last night than when I saw them open for The Music back in February. As good as the CD is, they are even better live. I look forward to seeing them again in Austin in September. As far as the openers, I liked Rock and Roll Soldiers a little more than Mad Action. Too bad there were only about 25 people for their performance. Great show overall, expecially for 10 bucks!
-
Well guess I'm alone in the opinion that Kasabian is an average band and a much weaker version of the bands they cop their influences from, Primal Scream, Oasis, etc. Frankly I heard little that resembled The Stone Roses. At one point I had to check and make sure I was transported back in time to the All-American Rejects shows because the singer had once again reminded the crowd they were in DC.
-
great show last night. :)
i managed to get a set list from one of the crew. he was nice enough to make sure i got it, as some people decided they were going to push me over to grab it. some people just have no manners these days! (again maybe im really showing my age)..
-
the schedule did shift 15 minutes earlier last night and mad action didn't play all of their alloted 45 minutes..
-
Here's the odd thing: I can rip them apart logically, with severe criticisms, but still, I just....feel it. To wit:
1. Main frontman, Tom, has no verbal charisma or rapport with the crowd. He is repetitive and cliched. "thank you Wershingtun, D.C" "God Bless Wershingtun, D.C."
2. Their influences are clearly obvious, though they claim they never listened to those bands and instead wanted to make music that fell between DJ Shadow's Endtroducing and Revolver.
3. Serge's backing vocals are repetitive. The "ahhhh's" appear often. Sometimes I can't remember what song I am seeing/hearing becase they end up sounding alike.
All of that being said, they were GREAT. Whoever said the drummer was the key was right on. He was (overused word --->) propulsive.
I was shocked by the size and enthusiasm of the crowd. They have come far in a short period of time. I especially liekd how they sometimes changed transitions in songs so they didn't sound exactly like the album version.
Oh, just thought of another:
4. They use too much hair care product. Damn, every strand was in perfect place and never moved. Or, they were just really dirty and probably smelly.
And another:
5. Did they even play the typical 75 minutes? I think they went on at 10:05 and got off at 11:10. 65 minutes including encore. Too short for a headliner, even if it was only $10.00.
-

that would explain it Kosmo. Thanks!
-
I thought Kasabian's warm-up performance for The Music was great. They looked good, they sounded good, the light show was top-notch. The songs seemed instantly familiar, and the groove came across real well. I was raving about it for weeks afterward.
As a headliner though, I felt like they didn't quite make it. It was a good, fun show overall, and they certainly gave it their all, but there's something a little empty about them. The songs are catchy and groovy, but there's just not a lot to them. It's all a bunch of random slogans and expresions of attitude, and since songs like that usually don't touch people all that much, a band will only get so far until they figure out how to write better songs/lyrics.
Ultimately a fine way to spend ten bucks though.
