I have yet to go, so I can't say, but what do you think was the best show there? This includes the old building.
-
several favourites, but my absolute favourite, so far, must be guided by voices on may 5, 2001. course, that could change tomorrow as i start thinking about the shows, but that's the one that jumped out of my head.
-
Justin Timberland
-
hard to say really - two that really stand out for me are The Afghan Whigs circa 1999 and The Verve circa 1998
-
soft boys
guided by voices and cheap trick
-
Three shows stand out for me: Spiritualized on late 2001. Doves on summer 2002. And Blur this past summer.
-
P.J. Harvey 9/10/2001
-
old club:Butthole Surfers, when they had to clear the building coz the dumpster out back was on fire.Hell, most people thought it was just their smoke machine. new club:tie Residents-wormwood tour....... Bauhaus reunion show

David Byrne - October 2001
Super Furry Animals and Grandaddy - October 2003
I've only been in this town for three years.
-
The Verve - Oct(?) 98
Richard Ashcroft (semi) Acoustic - Feb(?) 2001
Social Distortion - 11/12/2001
-
Ministry a few months ago
Tom Tom Club when they opened for Echo and The Bunnymen two years ago.
-
Foo Fighters and Beck Dec 6,99
Rage against the Machine Oct 31,99
NO doubt, Jamiroquai, Soul Coughing, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and of course every George Clinton show.

Fantastic show...but my favorites would have to be The White Stripes in April '02
and as a triple bill, Q and Not U, Interpol and Clinic last year.
But my #1 DC club show is probably Out Hud at the Black Cat this past July.

(but i did get to see him for free at the 'trap)
-
Orgy
Third Eye Blind
Fatboy Slim!
I wish there was a history of the concerts at 930 over the last few years. I'd love to see that.
-
Has anyone here not seen either of the two Radiohead shows there ('97 headlining & '98 Tibetian freedom concert weekend after the lighting cancellation) ..or the Red Hot Chili Peppers the same weekend, when everyone from all of the bands playing the Tibetian Freedom concert were there just hanging out (all the Pearl Jam guys, Sean Lennon, Thom Yorke, Dave Grohl, etc... not to mention Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston getting cozy on the balcony above the stage)??? those were my faves, but there are so many to consider.

Sigur Rós
March 2003
(the 2nd night)
I've been to many great shows at the club but the one that stands out the most for me was this one. I still get chills up my spine when I think of it.

i 3rd that nomination. one of the most amazing nights of my life, no joke. i got goosebumps and was moved nearly to tears. god love the icelandics.
-
coldplay august 2002
chemical brothers september 1999
living colour august 2001
but i can't remember half the shows i've been at. that coldplay definitely ranks up there though. i'll have to grab my old scrapbooks and look thru all the old concert stubs.
-
I second the rage against the machine oct 31,1999 show. It was an amazing show.

-
i wish i was able to go to shows there a year ago...i would have loved to see Nirvana who played 930 a long time ago(to me atleast)
-
The one that immediately springs to mind is the Bauhaus reunion show a few years back.
visitvisitvisit doomlink (http://www.alex.to/lavalampcity)

Garbage 4/30/2002
Sleater-Kinney 10/20/2002
-
I just moved here so out of the, um, 3 shows I've seen (Dandy Warhols, Hot Hot Heat and Interpol). I'd have to say Interpol was the best.
-
Nick Cave May 2002
Wilco September 2001
Funny Walkman, because that White Stripes and that Clinic show were disappointing for me, although I know I am in the minority on the White Stripes and Interpol was good at the Clinic show.
-
old club: white zombie
new club: soul coughing, social distortion
-
ryan adams, 10-3-02
of course, thats the only show I've seen at the 9:30...I did have tixs for the second night of sigur ros but my car decided to break down that night :(
-
mogwai, '01. i still have tinitis from that one.
-
Old Club: Clutch & The Specials
New Club: Clutch, Joe Strummer, Goldfinger
-
I would say...
Chemical Brothers in 1999
or
Smashing Pumpkins in 1999 (or was it 1998)
-
Al Green
Iggy Pop
Mighty Wind
Bob Dylan
Fatboy Slim
Radiohead (surprise show)
come to mind initially
althought I did have an awfully good time at David Lee Roth
-
yeah that sleater kinney show last year was great - they kicked ass
-
There are so many I wouldn't even know where to begin...but here are a few that I remember:
Social Distortion, Nov. 2001
Catherine Wheel, December 1997
Echo & the Bunnymen, July 2001
Chemical Brothers, September 1999
Buzzcocks, November 2000
Queens of the Stone Age, June 2002
Prodigy, June 1998
Iggy Pop, November 2001
Yo La Tengo, January 1996
Rollins Flag, June 2003
When the 9:30 was still WUST, my favorite shows are:
The Stone Roses May 1995
The Charlatans UK April 1994
-
ok, let's add to the mix a little...
Sleater-Kinney on the All Hands on the Bad One tour... second time around (Sept 01, I think?)
Flaming Lips just this year. (mmm... balloons, confetti, and costumes!)
-
adrian belew because he made the club go smoke-free for the night
-
Old club: Social Distortion
Fugazi
New club: Lou Reed
Richard Ashcroft
Guided By Voices
Fugazi
Strokes
Television
Interpol
Son Volt
-
As a patron: Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan,Chili Peppers
As an employee: Rage, Social Distortion, Hank Williams III
-
Old club... Scream reunion, circa 1992 ish (?).
-
sleater-kinney last year was my first show at the 930 club and has a special place in my heart as i have been a fan for years, but never got to see them because they always skip pittsburgh.
-
Gack, there are so many. I agree though as WUST it was Stone Roses. That is one of my 10 all time fav shows, and they moved it there after Ian freaked that there were seats at Georgetown University (talked to the electrician there years back).
Old Club:
Husker Du (Bob just stared at the camera girl all night)
Jane's Addiction (those guys are short!)
Butthole Surfers (Was there for their 2 night stint)
Robyn Hitchcock solo
Devo
The Orb (with live drummer and bassist)
New Club:
Sigur Ros (2003)
Gomez (2002?)
Chemical Brothers (best light show and insane sound)
Sex Pistols (I had always felt I missed something and I was right)
There are more, but I have seen too many to keep track of them.
-
A few that come to mind:
Radiohead ok computer tour - 2nd date with my then-future wife
Nick Cave - 97 or 98
Iggy Pop - my wife was like 8 1/2 months pregnant and she had a blast
Damned/Scream at the old club in 85 or 86
Bad Brains at the old club
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentleman tour
Any Flaming Lips show at the new club
Afghan Whigs in like 97 or 98
-
I didn't Prince when he played the new club, but I hear comments from time to time from people who really enjoyed that show.
-
So many good shows....... But they are all a blur for me now.
I guess the two Joe Strummer and Robbie Williams shows both stood out.
But not to bring negativity, but 2 people brought up fatboy slim. I thought that was the biggest waste of $40 ever. Why did you enjoy it so? The chemical brothers and basement Jaxx really showed how that kind of show should be done, all for half the ticket price.
Actually those two were great memorable shows.

1/2 the Basement Jaxx show was great, the half with the diva-like singers sucked.
Fatboy was one I liked, but not top because that is what I expected it to be. He is a DJ, so that is what I expected (Though it was more with DJ in the round and the video screen). I think with your different expectations (looking for a band) you got hosed. Just remember the telephone call at the start of Rockefeller Skank.

Well I liked the diva like singaz most of all, well their crazy outfits.
I dont remember the phonecall. I think I have tried to block out fatboy slim. Are the chemical brothers not DJs?

Please, don't bring up that show...it's taken me a couple of years of therapy to get over that $40 pile of dog-poo.
Honourable mentions on my 930 Hall of fame.
Shane MacGowan
Beautiful South
Echo & the Bunnymen
Morrissey
Billy Bragg before Wilco ruined him
Belle & Sebastian last night...yep, that good!

I have to add:
Superdrag (the night that gbv cancelled)

I am really bummed I didn't boot that show. It was great.

Definitely Sigur Ros second show this year. I was also pleasantly surprised with Polyphonic Spree this year and Cornelius last year. I guess I had come in thinking that I would not be impressed but was blown away.

oh, i totally forgot:

Death In Vegas
Sneaker Pimps 98 i think

Are you the Skeeter from Scream?
-
I don't see that many shows at the 9:30 Club, but the best had to be:
JC
Steve Earle on his first electric tour after getting out of jail
Wilco on their first tour (old club)
Wilco with Old 97's supporting

The Minutemen, May 1985. Out of a lot of inspiring bands playing the 930 that year (Husker Du, Replacements, et al.), they were the most powerful.

Holy bajeezus that was a fun time. And Needs New Body were excellent as well. Beans got a little old after about the 5th tune, but still, good times.

So Cornelius translated well live? I love his two albums, no idea what the live show would be like, just him? I really know nothing about the guy. I was planning on going but had already picked up tickets for Bela Fleck at Wolf Trap with my hippie friend, which was a great show but I've seen them a bunch before, was bummed about Cornelius.
-
The most entertaining show I've seen recently at the 930 was the Flaming Lips last spring.
One of the best shows I've ever seen at the 930 would have to be a toss up between Watt/Sonic Youth or Nick Cave on his Greatest Hits tour.

well said. I'd almost forgot about how stellar Needs New Body were.
And to Skeeter, who saw the Meat Puppets at the old club...shit, you're a lucky man.
-
I'd like to add Morphine to the list. Great band. A few months later he dropped dead onstage in Italy.
-
Bryan Ferry - 2001 How he got that 13 piece band on that stage and the women on strings were all HOT.

I actually went to see South who was opening and had never heard Cornelius before. I was amazed at the precision of the show. The stage effects (lighting/video) was the most amazing I had ever seen. I went out and bought Point the next day and have loved it ever since.
-
South and Cornelius.......
I thought cornelius were good live, my missus thought they were GGGRRRRRRREAT. I got one of there albums and it was a bit too wanky for me. (white cover big blue splodge).
Cornelius really excelled with their projection and light show though. There were about 6 people in the band as well, right?

-
Kottonmouth Kings w/ Zebrahead and Corporate Avenger back in 2000.

old club - one's that stick out
fishbone - a day show on a hot summer day. mmmmm... i can still smell it. the whole club was literally dripping with sweat. the floors were wet all the way down the front hallway. that show had to add something to the unique smell of the club.
fleshtones '87ish - pete zaremba took me downstairs to the backstage. i was young and thought it was just to talk. when he put his arm around me on the couch I started to figure it out...when he went to grab us drinks, I ran like hell!
house of love w/catherine wheel

i heard that show was even better, yeah... it was just the first time i had seen them, and what really floored me the most was just seeing how nobody moved, or talked, the entire time. normally at a show, even if it's more low key there is at least one person talking or trying to get a drink. but sigur ros just made everyone freeze in their steps. that was the most amazing part.
-
Originally posted by I Heart Walkie:

...except for the very annoying clapping Gay geeky Frat boys right next to me. These weren't the normal appreciative claps that I'm talking about but the very irritating type used to insight the crowd. It was so out of place for that show. You could tell that everyone wanted to kick them out.

radiohead, pulp, michael stipe - the sudden show
any of the soul coughing shows
the verve
the night korn made evilsatan turn the heat up.

- James Brown was a kick ass show.
- Dillinger Escape Plan in 2002 was great, with the fire breathing at the end of the set.
- Pietasters/Slackers/King Django was quite memorable
- Chick Corea was cool wish I was high thought
- Steel Pulse was a great experience but only because I was so fucked up.
-
why the take action tour, of course. sept 20, 2003 , i believe.
:)
-
no, that show was no good except for Dilliger Escape Plan who put on a better show the year before.
-
belated response about Cornelius- it was the best audio/ video integration I've ever seen at a club show; I'm still wondering how they did some of the effects. Matador is gonna release a Cornelius DVD in January

i heard some stuff, but i seriously thought the live shows would be a bit more interesting... not to mention like you say.. everyone said they were floored.. well i had heard that about other shows.. so many people had said that it was the most amazing show they'd ever been to after seeing them that i was curious.
i thought the opening band, the album leaf, was boring, but i was proven wrong on that when sigur ros came out. the jibberish got on my nerves after the second song maybe? that's the only time i've come close to walking out of a show.

My top five are:
1. 2002/03/18 Bush/Default
2. 1998/09/09 Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
3. 2002/04/30 Garbage/Abandoned Pools
4. 2002/10/20 Sleater-Kinney/The Quails
5. 2002/01/30 The Charlatans UK/Starsailor
Though I've attended concerts at the 9:30 Club going back to 1996, I didn't start to really frequent the club until 2002 obviously.
Anyone know who the opening band was for Nick Cave on 1998/09/09? That was before I started keeping track of all the concerts I attend.
Did V for Vendetta play before The Quails on 2002/10/20 as scheduled? I got there late and saw some group performing, but someone said something to make me believe they weren't V for Vendetta.
I really wish there was an show archive on the Web for the 9:30 Club. That would be very useful.
