All I've read is an uninformative Reuters piece.  I'm surprised it didn't hit DC.

from msnbc

FEDERAL POWER REGULATORS did not identify the power plant, but CNN reported that a fire had been reported at a transformer at the Consolidated Edison plant in New York City. Most of the affected cities are linked on the same regional power grid.
Officials of the Homeland Security Department said there were no indications that the blackout was the work of terrorists.
The evening rush hour was just beginning in the East, and NBC correspondents described scenes of pandemonium as thousands of New Yorkers streamed into streets where traffic signals were not operating.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it was crippled. Buses, trains and subways were not running. WNBC-TV reported that fire crews were heading down into the subways to check on thousands of stranded passengers.
Jim Tsumi of Riverdale, N.Y., was sitting on the shoulder of Highway 495 leading to the Lincoln Tunnel.
â??I got no hope getting home tonight,â? he said, pointing across the river at Manhattan, where the West Side Highway and a two-mile traffic jam were clearly visible. â??Itâ??s like 9/11 again. I hope this is nothing big.â?

The blackout stretched from Hartford, Conn., and Syracuse, N.Y., west to Detroit and Cleveland and north to northwest Ontario. The entire city of Toronto was affected, MSNBC television reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration said that its facilities were operating normally on backup power and that planes in the air were in no danger. FAA officials told NBC News that individual airport terminals could be affected, however, and Detroit Metropolitan Airport was temporarily closed.
Much of New England, however, including all of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, southern Vermont and eastern Connecticut, were unaffected, as were other areas of Canada, including Montreal and Quebec City.

I remember being a kid during the great NYC blackouts of the late '70s, and all I can say is, if the power ain't back by sundown, it'll be a looter's paradise.

it used to be georgetown seafood but they redesigned it and renamed it. not that georgetown seafood was all that good, but i did sometimes stop by there for oysters. fin is bad though, very bad. don't go there.

I wouldn't. Aside from the name, their identity (sign, posters, etc.) is lame, and I'm vegetarian anywayz

GREAT!! as i am getting my oil chaned to drive north to Toronto, i hear this on the news.

I bet NO ONE would have guessed this would be what happens to the Radiohead show on Sat.

i figured, storms, hurricanes, even a blizzard but not a blackout...good one. they better get that shit on soon!

All the reports I've heard and read say that the blackout didn't hit the DC area but this is not true; it hit the University of Maryland, College Park. The power was out for about 20 minutes.

well. . that would be difficult to believe since the dc area is not at all interconnected with the NiMo line that went down.

And Cleveland is?  Trust me, the grid is fully integrated across the nation.  It's a hell of lot more complicated than NiMo's line.

pardon me, i shall be more specific... those damn Electroclashers love to have their hair stick straight and shinier than glass. It accents the White Blonde/Jet Black skunk look that is their hair.

if the problem was in Niagara Falls, then Cleveland is a lot closer than DC  :)

By now you've seen the maps of the eastern interconnect, which actually encompasses about 60% of the country's grid.  This is what I do for a living, I was just noting that DC *is* interconnected to the NiMo line.

 Not being defensive, sonick...just noting.

I'm sticking by Bush's story, "We don't know what caused it, but we're 100% certain it wasn't terrorism!  Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

How can you "not know" and be "100% certain" in the same sentence.  If this isn't an example of Orwellian doublespeak, then what is?

BTW: Not to quote FIGHT CLUB, but "He was wearing his cornflower blue tie" last nite on TV.

I'm currently writing a screenplay called "Blackout". I'll be ready to see the rights to it on Monday, if anyone is interested. And no, it won't star Denzel Washington, despite its title.

well. . .by looking at the map and the probable location (near niagara falls), you can note that convergence of several high voltage lines just into canada. . .if one of those tripped, the casacade would fall to both sides, thus, down to nyc and to the other side, cleveland and ohio.  while the entire u.s. grid is interconnected (except texas), pjm should have enough power itself to buffer it's grid from the failure, which it did.  however, with this new report about ohio being the cause, i haven't a clue how this entire transmission grid failed. . .i know why the power plants shut down, but why the lines failed. . .guess i'll have to wait a few years for ferc to finally issue its report.

btw, i do this for a living too.   :)

Nothing like waiting for answers from FERC.  How long has this California shit gone on?  (And they're still trying to work out their rules out there.)

Too funny.  Loved the map on ABC, with ERCOT (Texas) all by itself down there in red.  They're laughing now, that damn xenophobes (and to them, foreigners are anyone from outside of Texas).

Great to see another FERC geek on the boards, Bede.
