Sorry if it's late...what did you see yesterday and seeing this weekend? :)
-
My weekend started and ended with battles.
-
Ponys tonight.
-
RJD2
eh.
-
I heard the RJD2 show sucked...
-
it was a little disappointing.
he should have stuck to the tables, an hour dance set is kinda weak. Although he played everthing i wanted him to play and the acoustic encore was nice.
-
I had an rjd2 ticket that I couldn't get rid of and the reviews I read were consistently not very favorable. I decided to still go see battles and let the rjd2 ticket go to waste. Very happy with my decision.
-
SSPU today in Record and tape Traders, then picked up tickets to the Recher Show then to Golden West for lunch...thats it

if you had made it to the club there was about 25-35 people looking for tickets.
-
Did it end up selling out? I did think about swinging by and dropping it off but thought there would be plenty left and that everyone who wanted one had one and that it would've just been too much of a hassle. Ahh well.
I was surprised at the relatively low turnout for Battles.

By any chance, did you arrive early to see Happy Chichester? If so, how was he?
RJD2 et al. are coming to Portland in May. The only reason I'm planning to go is to see Happy perform. I wish he and Greg Dulli would work together again if only because it would allow him to tour more frequently.

I'm just getting around to grabbing some picks out of the new music thread. It looks like I'm going to regret not noticing that Ponys show at Black Cat last night. Did anyone go?
-
I went. The Ponys played for about an hour with no encore even though the audience wanted more. They were ten times louder live than on record. I expected songs from Celebration Castle but I don't think they played any. They must have played the entire new album, which is quite a departure from the previous record. There were moments of greatness, but overall just an average performance.
On the other hand, the Black Lips opened and were very, very impressive. They played 40 minutes of euphoric garage-pop songs that made people dance. Many people in the audience were there just for them. It was great to hear "Buried Alive" and "Dirty Hands" back to back. The funniest part is seeing the lead singer catch his own spit several times...

I was there, too, and I agree with what Joe said. The Ponys were much louder than I expected, not that there there's a problem with that. The Black Lips were a lot of fun. Good show, but not great.
-
I was at the Ponys show as well. I only caught the tail-end of the Black Lips which was great. I thought the Ponys were great.
I noticed the volume too, and was very happy with it. The last couple of shows I've seen at the Black Cat have been too quiet.
-
I think the sound quality at the Black Cat is usually better when there isn't quite as much volume. I know I had difficulty making out the lyrics for both the Black Lips and the Ponys due to some muddy sound.
What's up with Black Cat audiences anymore? Only like 6 people applauded after the Ponys' set. No wonder we didn't an encore. This is the third show in a row at the Black Cat that I've been to that hasn't had an encore, likely due to the anemic audience applause.

I was at Ponys, Black Lips. I thought the Ponys were great. Note that I'm 'new' to them -- downloaded the new album from eMusic, but haven't listened to it.
I also enjoyed Black Lips (I knew 3 guys who'd come up from Richmond to see them). I liked the Ponys better; to me the Black Lips had songs I loved, and songs that didn't grab me much. Of the two, I enjoyed the Ponys more.
Still, really good Saturday night B.C. show.
I know nothing of this RJD2. Isn't that a character from Star Wars??

I had Celebration Castle and Laced with Romance, but I didn't have their latest, so I was also wishing they played more songs from their first two albums.

I probably did too. The Black Lips were fun and easy to dance, too, but some of their songs fell a little flat.

RJD2 @ 930 Friday Night [by me] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Clo0HVVZJLI)
-
Reverend Horton Heat/Murder By Death/The Tossers at the Recher on Friday, then Drag the River at RnR Hotel last night!
-
Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs at Iota on Friday.
-
Saturday I participated in Shutdown Day which encouraged people to do without computers for the day...
-
Well if we're listing non-music things, yesterday I ran nine miles, did yardwork, and put together furniture while watching NASCAR and the Hoyas. So rock and roll!
-
Went to see Ponys at the Ottobar on Friday. Only about 40-50 people there total, most left after Black Lips. Both bands were really good, but I felt bad for the Ponys. They played most of the new album and I think 2 from Laced with Romance for about 15 people.

Did anyone see Winterpills at Iota?

I wanted to see this but was Ponying it up. I liked their SXSW MP3 and had them on my list to catch if it worked in to my schedule. It didn't. Would be interested to hear how their show was...
