why does the treatment of prisoners at guantanamo bay and abu gharib warrent attention that is never bestowed upon americans in correction facilities?
i mean, its not like any of those dudes are gonna be released into the general population of this country...
-
why do we care about prisoners at all; they commit crimes . . . remember???
go watch Oz, if you want to see some prison time.
-
Read the book "Shit Magnet" by Jim Goad if you want to know of the hell in US prisons and why we send people there. Really intense reading. Also great if you want an empty seat next to you on the subway or a plane.

My luck, I'd end up with some pervert sitting next to me!

I've seen American Me. I don't need to know any more about men raping men in prison.

maybe because we invaded Iraq pretending that we were going to give Iraqis a better life than they had under Sodom?
-
It's "Saddam," or was your misspelling intentional? (Although I'm sure that there are those in the Government and country who did feel that Iraq was a Sodom that needed to be "purified" in the biblical sense.)
-

That is just a movie and nothing like real prison life. Trust me, I've worked it.
-
I'm sure it's no coincidence that Charles Graner worked in corrections back here in the states before going to Iraq. I'm sure there are abuse stories just waiting to come out from that part of his life, too.
-
The problem is that the US made such a big deal out of the "we're better than they are" argument and that "we were going to give them freedom", that these pictures and such put that to bed. So then it becomes a big news story.
No matter what, there are atrocities in the American prison system. However, prisoners aren't necessarily getting beaten for information and such, they were they are/were in Iraq and Gitmo. Most of the atrocities in American prisons are comitted inmate against inmate.
I acutally feel that these guards/military personnel that are going to jail are being made scape goats. I can't believe that in today's society, in today's military, that underlings can be so cavalier in their attitudes/approaches to accomplish something like this, without any orders from the top. I'm sure they had orders to interrogate the piss out of these people in hopes to get information on the infamous disappearing WMD's (that were never found), and to do it by any means necessary. Now they are getting fucked, and will become prisoners themselves. I'm not saying their right, and shouldn't suffer some punishment, but so should the people above them as well.
-
Look at the prisons in Texas, Iraq and Gitmo....all have the same gaffer. Coincidence?????
The military personell who are going to prison for actually doing the abusing deserve to rot in jail. Speaking as an ex-military (10+ years) member, this "I was only taking orders" shit only goes so far. I would rather have been court marshalled for disobeying a direct order than doing what they did to those people. And can you imagine ever actually getting proscecuted for it? "So, what order did you disobey?" "Well................
They impeached Clinton for getting a blowjob, but this fucker gets away with murder.....literally!
-
Well I honestly have no sympathy for any insurgent that gets humiliated or slightly tortured when the results of our prisoners are beheadings. Ten years in prison is too long for following orders, I agree mostly of what Mankie said, but from experience, disobeying a lawful order isn't as easy as saying "no" when their are probably more than one person ordering you to do it.

It wasn't insurgents that they were doing this to. It was random Iraqis pulled off the streets.
This guy's parents had a good comment, he would have been arrested for not following orders too. So he could not win.

Yup, he was in a no win situation.

The problem is that according to the White House Council what they did probably was not torture. I guess that would have been the defense that I would have taken.

Foreigners "yes", unless they were trying to help us. But killing our own people like the insurgents are doing over there, "no".

Who defines help? We are killing some Iraqis, would you say they feel helped by the Americans. I would not be suprised if in revolutionary times (definitely during the civil war) that those who were for the British, Tories IIRC, were killed. Sleep with the enemy, suffer the consequences.

Interesting comment on Leno tonight "President Bush told the NY Times he was no longer going to fund US programs that didn't work...he everybody, then we're pulling out of Iraq tomorrow!"

I believe in the old "live by the knife, die by the knife" theory, and if it was the maggots going round beheading folk, I would quite happily peel their skin with a rusty old potato peeler dipped in vinegar until they very slowly bled to death, beheading is a rather quick death and too good for those arseholes. The reality of the matter is they were just Iraqis dragged off the streets, and for that, let the spineless twat rot in his cushy little doodle prison cell, watching his cable tv while eating his three square meals a day, and sleeping in his bed with fresh sheets twice a week.
-
if anyone's still hanging with with this thread, try reading anything by eddie bunker (aka mr. blue in "reserviour dogs"), who's got plenty to say about mandatory sentences...try reading eldridge cleaver, try anyone with a jailhouse memoir...try to understand WHAT OUR PRISON SYSTEM IS.
sorry but i don't feel bad for iraqis or afghans or whatever. i feel bad for americans locked into american prisons. too bad neither dems nor repubs would ever dream of decriminalizing drugs, nor reducing mandatory minimums lest they be percieved as being "soft on crime"...
all our problems are at home. why pretend they are any where else?

Iraq is our problem now, because we've made it our problem. If we wouldn't have invaded in the first place, 1300 US Soldiers, and untold 1000's of Iraqi civilians would still be alive, and the deficit spending may have to cease a bit. We've created the further mess over there now.

are you kidding me? are you really trying to rip into south park like that?
you sound like a 41 year old fat secretary with two kids who listens to smooth jazz on her tinny radio at work
sure, south park can get overly preachy, and the last five minutes of every episode is a bit ridiculous, but it's a fucking great show and certainly not meant for 14-year-olds who don't know what's going on in the world

you, my friend, are a fucking idiot for saying that.
period.
you can debate the merits of the show, whether or not you think it's funny, whether it's too over-the-top-preachy, but I can think of dozens of tv shows more "brainless" than south park.

And that wasn't hyperbolizing? South Park is alright, though I think that the creators' libertarian viewpoints have been starting more and more to get in the way of it being a true social commentary.
-
Why should being born in a certain country make you proud?
I understand being proud of personal acheivements, like being able to grow a long goatee or run a marathon or kicking someones ass. I however, do not understand being proud of having good fortune at birth.
Do you often feel proud of acheivements you have had no role in earning?

there's a big difference between subjective opinion and objective fact ... South Park has more brains than Married With Children, and that's not an "opinion" of mine

nah, that wasn't hyperbole, if you really think south park is the most "brainless" show on TV, you're a fucking idiot ... and I agree with you, their commentary is getting preachy, misguided, and muddled, to say the least ... the show is way past it's heyday...

1.
1. The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge.
2. The faculty of thought and reason.
3. Superior powers of mind.

it's not an opinion to say that there are many TV shows that had more capacity to acquire and apply knowledge. if i really fucking wanted to waste more time on this, i could quantify it, but i think this is done.

yep, there are dozens of people (but two in particular) who acquire knowledge (often about current events), then apply it on south park.
there are also dozens of people who worked on married with children who didn't acquire much knowledge, or apply it on their tv show.
it's a crazy concept, i know.

this is what makes South Park so brainless.
because at least no one THINKS they are learning from Married with Children. South Park takes political events and current issues and makes a joke out of them. brainlessly i might add.
its not funny, its not original (maybe to anything on TV but really, we can all be racist, rude and curse cant we?) and you are defending it way too much...haha.

no, tucker isn't a soccer mom, but he had similar criticisms of comedy central.
this isn't about whether the show sucks or not ... that would be subjective, saying "south park sucks," which is fine by me
in my OPINION, south park certainly past its prime and too preachy, but i still like the show.
