I just wanted to remind everyone that the Carlsonics CD release party is this Friday at the Black Cat. Washington Social Club and Thee Snuff Project will also be playing.
-
What kind of a person would name their band "Thee Snuff Project"? Is that supposed to intrigue people or something? Chewing tobacco is gross.

Snuff of your sarcasm young man!

can't you snuff out a candle?
there's more than one meaning to 'snuff'
-
How about "snuff" as in film?
-
also, something can be "up to snuff"
-
hmmm, august 22. . .hey, that's my birthday! won't make it to the show as i've got old fashioned's and jello shots to drink all night.

I think you underestimate the versatility of "snuff" Rhett.
Or perhaps you were merely trying to snuff the band's name.
3. Resentment, displeasure, or contempt, expressed by a snuffing of the nose.

And I'm going to want to pay money to someone who in their name shows resentment, displeasure or contempt? I can get that for free by looking in the mirror.

So is Washington Social Club going to open? I'm surprised. Is Thee Snuff Project that good?

If you pay attention to the setlist,I believe Carlsonics will be doing at least one GBV cover.

So is anyone else coming to the show?

Oh, that's right! Happy Birthday!!
-
Well I was going to wait till later to say it.....
But HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIDET!!!!
-
I will be there tonight. I haven't seen Thee Snuff Project yet, but I have heard good things. I think I will have to stop by Corruption, the dance night downstairs, for some gay music to counteract all the R&R.

I'll be there -- by 9:00 to catch the WSC. I'm wearing a striped black and white shirt. With a rose (kidding!)

vertical or horizontal? :D

I think y'all should talk to *everyone* in stripes and see who answers certain key hipster questions, like "you have to chose, Pernice Bros or BRMC, whaddya do?"
:D

This show kicked ass, by the way. Didn't like Thee Snuff Project much (they need to learn how to put a bridge or two in a song), but the rest of the show was a *lot* of fun. Actually, I think Washington Social Club stole the show. They were the tightest I've ever seen (okay, I've only seen them twice before).
The Carlsonics were really good, and obviously having a fantastic time. I hope this album gets some play and they get a bit of support. It was a pretty big crowd, so they're obviously doing something right around town.
Good, good stuff. Even the Washington Post agrees (from today's paper):
The Carlsonics
Who says D.C.'s indie-rock scene has to be dominated by joyless, self-conscious artists? Not the fun-loving and frenetic Carlsonics, that's for sure. "We're just a rock band, we're not doing anything new," lead singer Aaron Carlson told a good-size crowd that turned out at the Black Cat on Friday night at a release party for the group's first full-length CD.
In an age when groups relentlessly hype their own importance, Carlson's self-assessment is refreshingly winning, if maybe a little off the mark.
The five-piece band may not be charting new musical territory (obvious influences range from the MC5, the Who and the Kinks to the Clash and '80s hardcore) but it distinguishes itself with a clamorous intensity and a wonderfully overblown, guitar-fueled sound.
The Black Cat stage is big enough for most bands, but somehow the Carlsonics made it look like a roller derby rink. The tall and gangly Carlson careered about, narrowly missing collisions with guitarists Ed Donahue and John Passmore and once clipping bassist Nikki West in the head with an errant elbow. Only drummer Mike Scutari seemed mostly out of danger as the band pummeled through "The Leisure Class," "Six Second Kayaking" and "Senator Trudge and the Clap Division."
The group's bristling energy is contagious and grew more so later in the night. A cover of the Who's "Baba O'Riley" wasn't an ironic statement delivered with a wink and a nudge. It was pure tribute. Much like the band's version of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," which West rendered with the sort of verve that Grace Slick can only dream about these days.
Rock that assaults and thrashes about isn't for everyone, but the Carlsonics' remarkable torrent of sound and spirit is a balm for fans searching for a band with a sense of urgency and primal expression.

I went to the show on friday night, mostly to see friends from work and just get out of the house. I had seen WSC before and really did like them... however, when they played on friday, I wasn't impressed at all. The male vocals annoyed me, and I had to go downstairs after a few songs. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood. And TSP i had seen at ft reno (and liked mainly because of the singer's weird dance moves/foot stomps that reminded me of an angry rooster) and was interested in seeing again. Great energy for about 4 songs, and then the repetitive nature of the band became increasingly clear. bleh. I was bored by the end of their set. I was too busy talking and running around downstairs to see the Carlsonics, but i wasn't too enthused about seeing them anyway. However, it wasn't the worst way to spend 7 bucks; i have seen far worse shows.
-
Wow. Sounds very much like we were in different moods, because the whole show seemed like just the perfect way to spend that Friday night. But I also really did like WSC's set. I found Snuff Project repetitive too, and sat down at the back of the room for most of their set. Carlsonics were just all wigged out and young and having fun.

I just read that the Carlsonics covered A Salty Salute and Tractor Rape Chain, why no mention Bags?

Okay, big admission. I'm *terrible* with covers. I always know I vaguely recognize it, but am usually unable to recall the original artists. Unless it's The Smiths.
You know, out in life amongst the riff raff, I'm extremely knowledgeable in the whole indie music stuff, but not here on the boards. I feel like I know nothing! But that's why I stay: to learn.
;)

Pretty sure you have heard A Salty Salute, first track on GBV's Alien Lanes, you said it sounds like The Byrds I believe.
-
Ahhh, the things I say to get a rise out of you.
I wouldnt recognise either of those songs as covers.......
now that is the truth
-
Thank goodness, I feel better. Especially from someone who's username was Robert Pollard.
I have Alien Lanes but haven't even listened to it.
Really like the new album, though.
