he's not vrey good live. i didnt think when i saw him in Bmore. i would have MUCH rather seen soul coughing.
-
whatevers. he's a good show. my favorite songwriter.
-
not sure what show you saw, but mike doughty is consistently amazing live. it's no soul coughing show, but fans of the band will not be let down. he still plays sc songs, stripped down to their barest essentials. he also has an impressive collection of his own songs, and a few fun covers here and there. he'll even play a song written by a four year old. in between songs, he'll tell stories, jokes, banter with the crowd, and just be generally entertaining. it's not to be missed.
mike's website is here (http://www.superspecialquestions.com). if you click on "music," it will take you to a page where you can download a couple of songs.
this show wasn't announced sooner because there was another event scheduled for saturday night that cancelled.

thanks ThatGuy.
Mike Doughty is a great show that I will miss. Just get him back at some point this fall.
Also, I'm really glad it's 9:30 this time in the summer and not snowy and dangerous at the Black Cat this past winter.
-
sorry you're going to miss the show. i'm constantly lobbying to have mike booked, but unfortunately i don't have much sway in that area. hopefully he'll get a good enough showing to make everyone realize that we should book him again. not sure if i'm counting on that due to the short notice, but i'm hoping.

tape the show?
smofe and smang is a lot to live up to, it's one of my favorite shows of all time. I've been in showbusiness since 1992. I know what I'm talking about.
-
ps - who is brock? got a URL?
-
i'll see what i can do about taping. i know mike's fine with it. if you check out super special rock (http://www.superspecialrock.com), there's a link to an ftp site where you can download live shows.
brock is a young local artist. he plays guitar, and samples himself as he goes, adding to a loop that he plays along to. he just recently added a drummer and a bassist, i believe. you'll have plenty of opportunities to see him at the club coming up, i'm sure. not sure of a website, though.

Awful solo dude with a guitar and a sampler, or looper or whatever Howie Day uses. Y'know, he plays a loop, then samples it and plays another over the top. Good in theory but he's not very good. Seems like he's been latching himself onto acts when they come through here a lot of late.
I loved Soul Coughing but I have no intention of seeing Doughty play another solo show. His song writting is perfectly attuned for a band but gets really really inane solo. He only knows one way to strum the damn guitar. I wish he'd get some sort of band together and record an album. I mean SC have been broken up for ages and he's done nothing in the time since.

This guys description sounds a bit like mellowdrone, the guy who supported Jonny Marr the first time.

I really like mellowdrone.

I don't think he (MD) really strums - it's way more percussive - so he's not just another guitarist -
- as for Brock I don't know who he is - anyone with a URL I'm definitely interested - very Beck by nature of previous descriptions - and he IS on a lot of the bills at the club this year -
howie day...hmmm. no real opinion on that at the moment -
go see doughty. enough said.

1+1 = 2 now. thanks for the link. it makes sense now why the brock guy is playing 9:30 so much:
A) he's connected
B) he's good
C) he's different
D) all of the above

I'd listen to the music first. It's like crap G Love played by one dude.

Saw Mike at the Black Cat a while back. Really kept the crowd happy and did a great set. It is hard to pull off solo acoustic, but he does it quite well.

This show was really good on Saturday. I'm not into soul coughing, but the show was cheap and friends were going. He's a really engaging performer -- I referred to him as an American Billy Bragg, but he wasn't so political (I saw Bragg in Austin last January or so and he was throwing his anti-war CD single out to the crowd).
Good show for doughty, and he really treats his fans well, staying to sign anything until everyone had gotten something, or had a chance to chat with him. Quite cool. I have a lot of respect for him.
