Post by: paige on May 25, 2003, 05:17:00 pm
how was the show, if anyone here went? i was up in columbia heights at the last pg99 show ever. great time, in a random basement gymnasium with about 3049835 other people. i was going to make it down to 930 but was too lazy.

It's a great song...got Moz in a bit of a pickle with the Brit press though.

pretty girls make graves was alright.. i guess.  they're like a cheap version of hot rod circuit, but with a fake kelly osborne singing.  she was neither energetic nor interesting, but the energy of the other 4 guys kept me into it.  i was hoping that it would have been different, i've been following the band for a couple months.  alkaline trio sucked, though...so that could be distorting my views of the whole evening.

Be careful what you wish for...if Moz was your neighbor then you'd have to put up with me as well because I'd be hanging out with the Moz watching the footie on his big screen telly while chatting about the boozers we used to drink in back in the manc.

No! You would be engaged in servicing his holes.....

morrissey has turned into rather a pathetic figure in my opinion. The whole moving to LA thing and still being miserable and singing songs about the weather is just silly now.

yet you think hanging around after shows to have your picture taken with the performer even though you're in your 30's not pathetic!

you are just bitter because I got to meet Badly Drawn Boy and Andy Rourke, arent you?

Its cool meeting the bands, you get to ask them questions about their music and why they do certain things.

so did you ask Rourkey why he fucked up the Smiths by turning into a burbling useless druggy?

..and I've met Badly Drawn Boy loads of times. The pubs back home are full of blokes exactly like him.

I would like to meet Shane MacGowan though I must admit.

I asked Rourke if he was still taking drugs and about the settlement and why he didnt take the route Mike Joyce did.

But I told you all that already.

I enjoyed meeting Joe Strummer, I wish I had been less nervous and had the guts to ask him what he thought of Sandinista now.... I was looking forward to asking him that question when he played this year.

As for meeting blokes like Damon Gough. I never have. How many people British people do you know that idolise Springsteen and love flaming lips and GBV above current British music?

hmmmm, good question I'd have to think about that for a minute. I do know at least one Brit who idolizes Andrew WK and loves the next 'it' band to be hyped by MTV, NME, YM and SEVENTEEN.

Andrew WK is good fun, he is taking the piss....

It is much better that than clinging to the past, watching some wrinkly guy in Lurex sing songs he wrote 30 years ago. Or pining for some gut who fucked Michael Stype, lives in LA and hasnt had a great record for 13 years.  and does not even have a recording contract anymore. By ignoring new music you consign yourself to old age and " when I was a boy we had real musicians and performers"

Its interesting to see live the bands that get hyped. Some are deserving of it others are not, but you only really find that out for yourself by going to the show.

You don't think most of the "reunion" tours aren't taking the piss and cashing in?

And by new bands, you mean bands like The Healers and Badly Drawn Boy?

The vast majority of the hyped 'it' bands are just nothing more than poor copies of bands from yesteryear....I'd just rather stick with the original myself.

Call me greedy, but I want them both. Just because music is old doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't good anymore. Sure, some of it loses it's appeal with time but not all. New music is great too, though a lot of that too sucks.

But what is the original? All music is derivative of wht has gone before.

By not giving new music a chance you are turning into a parent, Oh wait you already are.

I dont know if the reunions are taking the piss or not. Some must be, i.e. the pistols. But Berlin are cashing in, but is theat taking the piss, I dont see the humour in that. well except for the fact that they were never any good in the first place.

Others probably still see themselves as serious nusicians, soft cell probably fall into the later category.

Mostly when I see these old guys though I just wish I had seen them 10, 20 or 30 years earlier and I guess that is the point. New talent is turning up everyday that in the decades to come will be doing there own reunion shows.

quality of music that comes out has peaks and valleys as we all know. I just think we're in a massive fucking valley at the moment and can't seem to get out of it. It all started with the 5 member boy and girl bands and I think the record companies realized that to make tons of money you don't need talent, just hype. Take for example that American Idol fiasco..what the hell is that if it's not a televised Karaoke competition?

I've never watched American Idol. I really hate those kinds of shows but I found with Star Search, it became nothing but an exercise in what I call vocal gymnastics. The art of music was totally lost for the vocalists abilities to reach certain notes and perform all sorts of other very annoying twists and turns of the vocal chords.

but that is mainstream music, look beyond the mainstream and there is massive diversity and depth of talent.

 I'll take:

 Delgados
 Cinerama
 Lambchop
 Flaming Lips
 Ballboy
 Mull historical society
 Idlewild

Over any manufactured band. But manufactured bands have been around for almost 40 years Mankie. they are as charming as they ever were and just about as easy to avoid. As long as you dont listen to airwave radio.

Truer words were never spoken....or typed.

And there are dozens more that can be added to that list. Even Mankie would like a lot of them, for instance, I Am Kloot and Elbow.

It just takes more research to find them out of the mainstream.

I haven't watched ANY of the reality, idol, don't marry her fuck me shows. It's hard to miss that fat bastard that won the idol thing though when it's the main news story on every channel, even though a huge bloody earthquake just nailed Algeria. I don't listen to mainstream radio either. It's either cd's, am radio  or my guilty pleasure "elliot in the morning" Even my daughter bought the Beatles #1's at Tower on Sunday because in her words, "there's nothing else worth buying out at the moment"

A chip off the old Mank.    :D

I still love the Beatles, but mostly their early works. Have never liked Let It Be and am still sick to death of Abby Road.

And what you just said Mankie about those crap shows; that is exactly why I watch almost no tv at all anymore.

Jag, markie misses my point and takes me too literally sometimes. I'm not saying every single band that comes out at the moment is an absolute load of crap, I'm simply saying that any talentless wanker can walk on the stage and say they're the dogs bollocks and the sheep will follow....and it's happening way too much at the moment, wether it be mainstream or "indie", which brings down the batting average to use a yank term, the end result being people like me who get exposed to the shit don't even give most bands a chance unless someone like yourself shoves an "I Am Kloot" cd under my rather large schnoz!

Andrew WK wouldn't exist were it not for David Lee Roth.

Those two stupid cows "Berman and Berman" have got to go though, that's some crap they come out with. And they need to  ease up on "A baby story" it seems to be on all the friggin time. I do love the surgery shows. I also like medical detectives and forensic files, even though they seem to repeat those too often. The conclusion I've come to is if you kill someone and as much as fart while you're doing it....they're going to nail you sooner or later.

yeah those weird sister doctors kind of freak me out. and im so sick of seeing babies being born too! i only like to watch the surgeries and weird diseases. the forensic ones can get kind of cheesy so i tend to stay away from those. history channel has the best stuff though. saw something yesterday about the story behind the martini. woohooo

I also like the "animal doctors" or whatever it's called on Animal Planet...it's just like "Trauma, life in the ER" only for animals. I'm a complete soft shite when it comes to animals so get all choked up when a sick animal gets brought in.

I'm so bad with animals that if there's a cricket or spider or something in the bedroom in the middle of the night I'll stay awake for ages trying to catch it under a cup so I can let it outside before I'll kill the thing. I also found a wild bird in the back garden that was sick so I took it in and tried to nurse it back to health but it died, so I made a gravestone and buried it where it fell!

I have a mate who's just as bad. He told me he accidently ran over a squirrel with his truck one time and burst into tears...and to look at him you'd thing he'd just made parole or something.

(no wonder yank men think Brits are all gay!)
