Title: The Bravery
Post by: cheshirecat44 on January 24, 2005, 04:10:00 pm
I just noticed the show at the Black Cat has been cancelled on Jan. 31st.
Is the Show at Fletchers still on for this Friday? Have they cancelled all their US dates?
 Help..
 Please..
 Must see them...

They were alive and well on Friday night, I can assure you.  Not nearly as many models as they had in the video though, which was a little disappointing.  No copies of the new album either, just the EP.

I overheard on Friday that their Boston gig was up in the air due to travel problems from getting from CA to the Snowy east.  Perhaps the same is true for the Black Cat?

I saw they announced they're opening for Ash at the Black Cat on Mar 5.  Maybe they didn't want to play two gigs at the same venue a month apart.

I enjoyed them.  They weren't awe-inspiring, but their diversity makes for an enjoyable show.  Smackette really liked them, but then again, most of the girls there liked them.

I thought the lead singer tried a little too hard, but they do a nice job of not sounding too much like their influences, but enough like each one to let you know who they are (The Cure, U2, New Order/Joy Division).  But it's so well mixed up that you don't get bored with it.  A friend of mine described it as "Danceable Strokes," but I thought it was a litte better than that.

 Well worth $10 either way.

The Bravery will be going on 2nd at Fletcher's so get there early...I was told that the closing band, karmella's game, will be going on around 11:30pm, so I guess everyone should get there by 10pm to be safe. It seems Fletcher's has been pushing their shows earlier & earlier, even on weekends.

Damn. I was looking forward to seeing them on the Backstage. I guess I will now be going to the Ash show.

f'ing Brilliant show..
Full of energy..sounded great live..and did an encore of INXS "don't change"
Didn't realize 2 of the guys are from around here. The lead singer's parents were in the audience.
The only thing I was disappointed about..no LP or EP..no merchandise..
I think they may even upstage Ash in March.

brilliant is the last words i would use to describe the Bravery.  they were good. but absoltely nothing special or brilliant at all

worth $10 but really, it wasnt all that.

but they were trying really hard. so I'll give em that.

the crowd at Fletchers was kinda odd. mostly it looked like all the people who read the great write-up in Rolling Stone.

I thought the show at Fletcher's was awesome! You gotta give it to them: they have style, attitude, looks AND their music is incredibly fun! I can't wait until the Black Cat show. I wish they'd add in another Baltimore date. I didn't see anyone handing out free stuff...damnit!

Exactly how I felt, especially after seeing the Arcade Fire only days earlier.  I was entertained, but not wow'd.

Worth every $ of $10, but nothing that I had to tell people about.

There are quite a few of bands with the look, the attitude and the fun sound that do it better than the Bravery.  I felt the lead singer was tring a little too hard, which makes it more of an act.  But I'll pick up a used copy of the album in time.

Okay, rather than hijack the Just Announced thread, tell me about these guys.  Would I like them (for those of you who have an idea what I go for...)?  Am I a complete loser because I don't know them?  Are they big enough for a pre-sale?  Are there MP3s out there, or better yet, some streaming album or whatever?

 Thanks...
Title: Re: The Bravery

So many questions....

The Bravery are essentially a garage band whose sound has been synthesized.  Not guitars w/ synths ala Killers, but the actual guitar sound has been fooled around with a bit.  Catchy songs, played with just enough agression for them to warrant their black leather jacket look.  Their 3 song EP is available to listen to on their website.  There used to be  mp3's hosted somewhere, which i've downloaded, but i forget where from.  Some searching w/ google and you can probably still find them.

Def not loser for not knowing about them.  Too many indie bands, so little time.  Oh, and there is a presale going on that's available both through their email list and website.

I think you'd enjoy them.  Most of the ladies seem to REALLY enjoy them.  You can listen to their EP on their web site:

 http://www.thebravery.com/ (http://www.thebravery.com/)

Top right corner launches the Bravery player.

You can also watch the new video for their single "An Honest Mistake" on the site.  Their first video for "Unconditional" was better though, but mainly because it featured dozens of super models.

Their songs are catchy 80's style dance tunes.

Yeah, The Bravery are going to have to win me over. I've now listened to a few songs and am not sure what I think of them. Will you be back in town for the show, Bags?

I think the show will sell out, Fico. Didn't Ash sell out on their own last time?

I'm to lazy to find the Ash thread on this show... And its pointless to start yet another thread for roll call purposes.  So I present you the Faux Roll call thread.

 So who is going tonight?

I'm there and Kosmette's going but grumping  because Ash is playing so late.

Went to the show in Philly last night.  Overall, I thought The Bravery were good, but not great.  They have a lot of potential though and definitely worth seeing.  Ash was fantastic!  They covered most of the songs from Meltdown, three from Free All Angels and a few other songs from earlier releases.  Crimea was awful, not worth seeing in my opinion.

I disagree on Ash -- I think they'll be on by 10:00.  I think the website is correct and they've switched headliners.  Of course I don't know for sure, but I think the Bravery would drive a sellout, and they've switched up.  On that premise, Ash would be on around 10:00 and Bravery on around 11:00.
Title: Re: The Bravery
Post by: kosmo vinyl on March 10, 2005, 04:30:00 pm
highly doubt they switched the bill... it was Ash 's tour to begin with they are the ones with the most records and will undoubtable want an encore and the longest set. It's not like the Bravery haven't been listed forever on the bill.  The Bravery have maybe a 45 minute set.  I'll feel ripped off and asking for a refund if Ash get an opener length set...

At the show in Philly last night, The Bravery was second (played 9:15-10:00) and Ash played from 10:30 to 11:45.  Probably will be much the same at the Black Cat.  BTW, the older songs Ash played included Kung Fu, Goldfinger and Girl from Mars all of which were from the 1977 CD.

I think this is so rich....from NME.com (especially since we had links here to the Bravery's first band, Skabba the Hut, in the Ash thread....)

IT'S THE KILLERS v THE BRAVERY!

BRANDON FLOWERS has branded THE BRAVERY as imitators of his band THE KILLERS.

Talking to MTV, the singer claimed that bands like The Bravery have only been signed on the back of The Killersâ?? success, and questioned the New Yorkersâ?? musical motivation.

"Look at a band like The Bravery. They're signed because we're a band," Flowers declared. "I've heard rumours about [members of] that band being in a different kind of band, and how do you defend that? If you say, 'My heart really belongs to what I'm doing now,' but you used to be in a ska band. I can see The Strokes play or Franz Ferdinand play and it's real, and I haven't gotten that from The Bravery. I think people will see through them."

Flowers also explained that fellow bands are not the only ones trying to benefit from The Killersâ?? success, revealing that the bandâ??s old drummer is now suing him.

The old sticksman wrote Flowers a "a really terrible e-mail" claiming to have written â??Mr Brightsideâ??.

"This guy who was in my band a long time ago is trying to sue us," he said. "We wrote 'Mr Brightside' a long, long time ago, when we had a different drummer. He had nothing to do with it, but his wife is a lawyer, so she just sent a letter to our lawyer. Wow. You always hear about people coming out of the woodwork once you get big, but this is ... wow."

The Killers are now planning a US tour, but have confirmed they have been working on new material.

"One new song is called 'Where Is She', it's got a great feel, some great harmonies on it. We didn't do enough harmonies on our first album, so you're gonna hear more of that on the second album â?? those Police-esque harmonies," Flowers explained. "And we're playing other new songs â?? 'Higher And Higher', 'Daddy's Eyes', 'It's Only Natural' â?? that will make it onto the second album. You can't drift too far off the first record, but these songs are what the new album will sound like. A bit more organic, with organs and pianos. We don't want to be 'that [synth] band' forever. We'll let someone else be that."

Additionally, the band play The Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals.

It's ok. A few years from now; we'll be talking about the Killers in the past tense.

I thought it was illegal to sell promos...?

Best Buy (and Circuit City) are selling the official release for $6.99 this week.

I think the album is wholly derivative.  Whoever said it was a cross between the Strokes and New Order was right.  That being said, it is quite catchy.

Except for that "Stop, drop and roll --  you're on fire" song.

It turns out that the drummer for the Killers was in a ska band too:

Also, both bands are on the same label and reportedly shared the same A&R guy and manager, which would lead one to believe that this "feud" may be nothing more than a publicity gig.

And so the backlash begins...I was wondering when The Killers would get big enough where people started resemting them....
