Has anyone else been troubled over the past year or so that Phillie seems to be eclipsing DC for shows?  it's kinda buggin' me -- is it just about being only half as far from NYC?

I totally agree.  Philly gets every single show, big or small.  D.C. gets a good chunk of shows but still gets bypassed too much for my liking for Philly and Richmond.

Are there specific shows you're referring to? Also, Philly has a lot of venues of various sizes. When you think about DC, without including Baltimore, it doesn't compare...and it shouldn't since Philly is a larger city. When bands look at DC, it's usually the 9:30, Black Cat, Velvet Lounge or Iota if it's not a big arena show. While Philly has the Khyber, Electric Factory, World Cafe Live, North Star Bar and many others.

jesus. i don't know what you're talking about.  i live in richmond and NOTHING i want to see ever comes here.  i've been to 4 or 5 local shows total (one of them a comedy show and 2 of them had 20-30 people show up).
maybe dc gets passed up, but richmond gets passed up way more considering there are places to play in chapel hill, norfolk and dc.  why stop in richmond?  especially after places like the flood zone closed.
Title: Re: damn interpol

For instance, Philly's getting multiple U2 dates during both legs -- DC only gets two dates during the Fall leg.  Interpol -- they played Philly last fall as well, but may be passing DC.  There have been others of note -- can't think of them off the top of my head, but I know I've thought again and again, "why Philly and no DC?"

Richmond is another matter -- Philly and DC are very similarly sized, major east coast cities.  I don't think Richmond is quite the same.

Maybe it's the venue issue.  Odd, still.

Richmond used to do ok....I lived there in late 80's early 90's.  Flood Zone, Rockets/Metro, Jade Elephant, Twisters....but seems like now It's just Alley Katz.  I've never been to that place, but have not heard good things about it.  Christ, even Twisters closed, and it was starting to seem to me like that place would never go out of business.

Oh well, at least you can still go drown you sorrows in a pitcher over at the Village!

I don't get it. Interpol was one of my least fave shows in 2004. I'd say don't sweat it. But that's me.

it used to, but that's before i was really goign to shows a lot.  i HATE alley katz.  i've been there once and it was a terrible experience.  it's almost as bad as the ritz (now called disco rodeo) in raleigh nc.  the flood zone has been gone for nearly 10 years now.  twisters still exists.  it closed down for a bit and someone else bought it and it was called 929 cafe (i went to one show thre) and then that closed and now it's open again as nanci raygun.  doesn't get anything really big (well, for its size), but it still has shows every week.

the village is horrible, horrible food.  you'd be much better off getting some vegan chinese food at the newly-reopened panda garden across the street!

the nanci raygun occasionally has some really good shows, i saw the walkmen there fall 2003, unfortunately richmond crowds just suck. a lot.

i've seen a few shows at alley katz, it's not great but it's decent. that's my opinion at least. the sound isn't so great, but maybe that's cos i'm always standing up front.

the only show i've been to at that site (regardless of the name) was american analog set and her space holiday.  i was bored out of my mind.  i was only there because i was recording it for a friend.  there's just nothing really that comes to richmond that i want to see, so i haven't yet really had the chance to see how much richmond crowds suck.  and i don't forsee myself having the opporunity to find out anytime soon.

saw the new video for interpol ("evil"), and i was kind of surprised ... i figured this song had a shot to break them into the mainstream, very catchy, almost "float on"-esque ... the video, however, was really disturbing, a puppet-like character singing in front of this horrific car accident while paramedics work in the background ... i don't think that's getting any play on MTV1 any time soon =)

by the way, subterranean was really good this week:
 interpol "evil"
 bloc party "banquet"
 the kills "the good ones"
animal collective "who could win a rabbit" (don't like the album, love the song)
 ted leo "me and mia"
death from above 1979 "romantic rights"

The full set of US dates for March have now been announced. Tickets for these shows will go on sale on February 5 with a presale starting at 10am local time on February 4. There are a limited number of presale tickets available and you must be registered to purchase them.

For Interpol in the past (with the exception of the one Bowery Ballroom show), all you had to do is sign up with Musictoday. Not super exclusive.

But. my question -- do you think I'll really have to buy a ticket for the Friday show during the presale?  I think I'm risking a trip to the box office tomorrow night.  If I miss out, no stress.  Seen 'em twice last year...

On a serious note. I notice "presales" are becoming popular with everyone. Can someone please enlighten me on why they have them? Why not just make the tickets available earlier to everyone instead of going through the bullshit of passwords and secret handshakes and all that crap? U2 cashed in on them by charging â?¬40 just to register for the priveledge of getting in the presale....so they don't count because Bono and his boys are just money grabbing wankers at this point. How much money does someone need for crying out loud!!! GGW doesn't need to answer that.

Yeah, does anyone know about when tickets go on sale to the public? The lady on the phone said 10 tomorrow, but Interpol's site says noon ... is this another presale situation, and if so, where do we go and what password do we use this time?

i suppose that would mean the general onsale is at 10 tomorrow.
interpol is having a presale through their site at noon.

the 9:30 capacity is about 1000 and there are two presales for these shows.  do the math about how many tickets are probably available for either show.   50? 100? Presale to many tickets then people are moaning about not getting regular sale tickets.  Scalpers are also unfortunately likely to be buying heavy in presales to, so you can't release that many tickets.  12 people buying 4 tickets each and the presale is soldout.

i really have no complaints about the way things are right now.  i had so many issues before trying to get tickets for some shows before you could buy 930 club tickets online.  i live 2 hours away, so i can't easily go to an outlet/the box office for an onsale and trying to get tickets via the phone can be as bad as F5ing.

I'm not moaning so much about not getting tickets as I am about how screwed up the pre-sale was.  At 10:05am, I didn't see either of the shows listed after I'd entered in the passcode.  It wasn't until nearly 10:10am that I saw the Saturday show listed and 10:12am until the Friday show was listed.

I hate to disagree but I and several friends had no problems buying erasure tickets on presale several days ago and that was for one show. Interpol is 2 shows!  This was absolutely ridiculous that we couldn't get even 1 ticket a few minutes after 10!!!!  And please, Wilco?  not even if it was free...

It's the presale clusterfuck mentality.  Same thing with the Pixies.  Folks here get so wound up (which I understand, as we're big music fans), but it's just a rush to get the presale tickets.  So, two of us got Pixies tickets -- which we ended up not even being able to sell.

I don't think two Interpol shows are selling out in a day.  I wouldn't stress.
Title: Re: damn interpol
Post by: LRHippo on February 04, 2005, 11:49:00 am
just my $.02 that no one will care about, but I think the moaning isn't about not getting the tickets, it's about the tech problems. The link in the email didn't work. Luckily, some found the link on the 930 front page. Then a show was there, not there, there again, etc.

Moving on from the presale, will the box office be open for sales tomorrow moring when the general on sale happens?
Title: Re: damn interpol
Post by: kosmo vinyl on February 04, 2005, 11:52:00 am
the erasure pw was less widely available as it was in the snail mail newsletter which one would guess is less widely distributed than the email.

stick around popular presales like Wilco, Interpol, The Darkness go quickly and it gives us forum regulars a little entertainment when they do.

There are ALWAYS ways to get into concerts, sometimes it's as simple as just being nice to the roadies who are hanging out before a show and politely telling them that you can't get in and are willing to pay for a ticket, but as luck would have it you couldn't get one before the show sold out. A smile and good manners often go a LONG way.

I remember when Smashing Pumpkins played with Swervedriver back when the 9:30 was WUST and I must have had 8 friends that wanted to get in but didn't have tickets. Somehow they managed to find extras on the street. Then there was the yuppie guy who thought he was cool that paid $120 to get in, who got his glasses smashed by over-enthusiastic moshers. That's entertainment!

It's not making fun of your taste in music. I like them; have I mentioned I saw them in 1999? I think it's the fact that new people come out of the wood work and sound all baffled. It is pretty funny.

well at least the vitual waiting room didn't show up this time... sorry to be callous but having witnessed the stream of complaints every time a presale or general goes quickly it become entertaining. yes there appears to be a technical error this morning.  presales are difficult to setup and it's possible something got overlooked.

personally this just proves that presales have outlived there usefulness, people expect they'll automatically get tickets and get all crotchity when they don't.  the fact there are two shows for interpol should give you a sense of their popularity. tickets were going to be gone quickly, there are at least 500 other rabid interpol fans wanting to get a pair of tickets to the show.

I actually think that's a good idea. Presales do nothing. I got tickets for Friday, but not Saturday, am I upset, no. Why? Because there is another one starting in 40mins, and the general on sale is tomorrow. I do think it is a legit gripe about the tech problems, more specifically about the link in the email. Or maybe presales should just be box office, in person only. Imagine what they did before the internet!??!?! I recall the days of arriving at the box office at 3 pm the day before tickets went on sale and sleeping in line. Ah, the good old days.

I never said I was "entitled" to anything, Chimbley.  I think the frustration comes from technical glitches.  I know I'll get tickets in the general sale, so I'm not worried about it.  So, take your attitude and shove it up your arse.  AND, just because I'm a junior member doesn't mean anything.  I've been making the two hour trek up from Richmond for about 13 years now.

Luckily, I'm the boss (sorta) and as long as I don't abuse it, I can come in a little late if need be, or leave early. I know that's not the case for everyone. Just remembering a less stressfull time...

full disclosure other than occasionally djing at the 9:30 and fixing the forum when it breaks, i'm not an employee of the club.

Chimbley, it's not my fault that Richmond sucks for live music.  We barely get anything.  And, the ABC board runs a pretty tight boat due to some really backward early 20th century laws.  Fortunately, there are two new major clubs opening up, so maybe that'll bring the "big names" to town.  Then, I can stop polluting the air in your shithole of a town.

FWIW....the Interpol presale at noon went rather smoothly. Didn't need a password either - you just had to register with their site and then logon. And only a $8 s/c for two tickets. I'm going to *guess* that tickets.com would be more expensive....

Regardless, there are two shows and it shouldn't be hard to get tix one way or another.

Look, there are a couple baseline understandings to keep in mind here.  Presales can be a bitch.  Passwords get passed around, increasing the "cluster" aspect of the presale clusterf***.  So, when regulars on this board see members -- not just "junior," but members with only one or two posts -- you can't blame us for assuming that person became a member *only* to get information on that particular presale they're seeking the password for.  It's not a caste system, but a merit system, to some extent.  And it makes sense.  If someone's coming here just to get one password, you can assume that's also a person who's going to email it out to 50 of his Interpol-loving friends.  And it's understandable that he/she would do so -- he/she doesn't have a sense of loyalty to club regulars or the club.  Whom the presale is intended to 'reward.'

My one worry is that we don't screw it up by complaining over every presale.

Though, I'll admit I'm also of the mind that they've lost their usefullness.

This is the 9:30 club forum, not the Interpol forum.  Notice that the Interpol website had their OWN presale?  I can assure you that there will be hundreds of other "serious" fans getting tickets during the general sale or Interpol presale.

Every playground has it bullies.  Internet message boards have more than usual because they get to hide-out behind fake names and identities, and say things they'd never say to someone's face.

Musicians and artists get used to - and prepared for - being attacked for their "art" (I know because I'm one).  It's sad that - on this board - it's the fans who are attacked for who they listen to; where they live; how old they are; or how long they've been members here.  Some friendly advice: Either leave the playground - or toughen up and give it right back.

Eventually the worst bullies get "outted", so you can spill drinks on them at the next concert.   :p

well i might only be a junior member and felt the need to complain (but didnt) as it was just frustrating not having the correct addresses and what not, but i just got my tix through the interpol site itself. of course, this wasnt as easy as erasure, but i guess with passwords only being given through the erasure site and via snail mail, it was a bit easier. anyway ill just shut up now and go back to lurking and being a "junior member". i suppose there are worse things in life as i still manage to see everyone i want to in concert!

The annoying part is not that the tickets sold out so quickly.  Ok, demand is high.  It's that the web thing was basically broken from the get-go.  Unexpected behaviors with shows disappearing, tickets being reported as unavailable, yada yada.  I mean, at the very least I'd expect you'd check out that your own presale link that you emailed to thousands of people was correct.  Here's hoping they can improve their technology next time.

I was willing to take credit for the girls flashing the band from the balcony, but I guess I have to include the guys too:

"It was a different sound that dominated, and it's growing," says Matt Smith, music director of Los Angeles' KROQ radio station. "We played Interpol's first album when they were at a small theater and all the kids had on black eye makeup. Now they play and it's 2,600 guys with backward Abercrombie hats and girls in the balcony flashing the band."

And I'm sure "Evil" on in the background everytime the chicks were on the verge of making out on last week's episode didn't hurt ticket sales.

Oh, nobody has a problem with new people on the board.  But when presales come along 2 things happen.

 1) New people sign up on the board and start yelling "GIMME THE PASSWORD I'M THE WORLDS BIGGEST FAN AND I NEED TICKETS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!".

 2) Not everyone gets tickets, and it's usually those same new people who start complaining that the presale sucked, there weren't enough tickets, 9:30 sucks, the board sucks, real fans like me deserve better, it's not fair, blah blah blah.  Pretty lame reactions, considering 90% of the tickets haven't even gone on sale yet.

The regulars here see this every week and it's usually either very amusing or very tiresome.  It depends on our mood.  Today it was quite amusing.     :)

I make no positive or negative statements one way or another.  Somebody asked why there was all the fuss and it is in fact because Interpol have a larger following then last time.  And I don't think that's a bad thing.

But that is why it's much more difficult to get tickets this time around.  That's all I was saying.  Don't read into it.

Nice summary and to repeat my earlier post, newbies are more than welcome here.  New blood keeps the forum lively.  It used to be that regulars could pick apart people who dropped cups from the balcony or got caught under aged drinking, now all we got is the fallout over presales.  Consider the hazing  over and maybe someday you'll be taking potshots at newbies complaining about presales and passwords too.

No, no -- not the point, to me at least.  My issue is for new folks coming on trying to get the 9:30 club password -- I won't give a junior member the password, but we all come to the forum for some reason -- usually a particular show we want to find out about.  Stick around, talk about music, how bad ticketmaster is, whether genre names really mean anything...and we'll all be sharing passwords someday soon!

Meh, it wasn't really people yelling about the password and stuff like that, it was just that the presale was flat-out broken, down to the email that the 9:30 club itself sent out.  I've been in several presales and regular online sales for 9:30 Club shows (including the last time interpol came to town in November) and never had it go as poorly.  I think it's worth bitching about, but if you don't, that's cool too.  We can agree to disagree   :)

Thanks, Spoonman, for the heads up. Plenty of tickets on there and I was so wound up yesterday! Wound up like a wind-up toy... an wind-up toy that is pretty psyched to see Interpol.
I wonder if part of the reason that everyone was so into the presale/Interpol in general is that they had a song from antics on as background music in three scenes in the OC two weeks ago. And yeah, I watch that show and so do you, so don't let's make fun eachother.

I agree with this completely. It wasn't so much the competition, which I'm fine with -- if I get tickets, great, if not I can usually get tickets I want through other channels. But the presale was just a mess; it actually seemed like someone was filling in the information on the shows as the presale started. I have this picture of someone rolling out of bed late, getting on their computer at home, and filling out the presale info in their pajamas.

I love the 9:30 Club; it's a great venue and from what I can see, very well managed. The state of the presale was just a bit of an unpleasant surprise.

Okay here's the situation:

I was going to stay with my friend at college in Loyola Maryland for the weekend and take a train down to DC for the show, then back to Loyola afterwards.  But we just realized that he has Easter Break on that weekend (scheduling error).  So now we don't have anywhere to stay that night.

So, I'm asking if anyone here has any suggestions about what to do.  We don't want to spend a fortune for a hotel for one night, but we could drive down from NYC (where we live) that day and spend the night in DC after the show - does anyone have any other suggestions or know of any cheap secure hotels in the area?

Thanks everyone for your help .. if you want to IM me my AIM screenname is hybridview01.  Hopefully we can figure something out .. I NEED to see Interpol!

Sonar's History & Concept
Sonar began as an idea in Lonnie Fisher's mind in 2000, and was founded in 2001 with partner DJ Lovegrove. The first location was a small lounge in the Canton area of Baltimore. Within a year, Lonnie decided it was time to move on to a more ambitious and larger venue, and Sonar moved to its current downtown location. This building had been in Lonnie's sights since 1998, and in fact, there was an article in the local paper that year with his picture, sitting in the middle of the warehouse, talking about how he was going to turn this building into Baltimore's best night club.

Finally, on October 30, 2002, that became a reality when the new location opened its doors. Sonar existed for two years as a two room, 600 person capacity night club, but with a massive attached garage in which special events would be held from time to time. In March of 2004, now with Lonnie as the sole owner, Sonar acquired the entire building, enclosed the garage and began creating what is intended to become Baltimore's premier music venue. Already, the space has played host to internationally famous DJs, hip hop artists such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, KRS One and Doug E Fresh, and will soon host a full schedule of all manner of musical genres.

We make no secret about our mission to change Baltimore for the better. Our policies are designed to provide a meeting place for all of Baltimore's diverse people, and we insist and enforce a policy of tolerance at all times. There is no black night, there is no gay night, there is no straight night, no white night, no Hispanic night... if you like the music that is going on, then EVERY NIGHT IS YOUR NIGHT, and that is how we intend to keep it.

As for the name, Sonar fits perfectly for what we are trying to accomplish. Whether it be navy ships or animals, 'sonar' is a mechanism whereby sound is used to locate an object. We named our club Sonar for that same purpose; people will find our venue because of the sound, both the music that we present, and the quality of the sound systems. The sound in our club is one of the best in the country, and once the concert hall is done, we intend for it to be unparalled in Baltimore and beyond.

The other key to Sonar is our staff. Every person in our organization is committed to bringing Baltimore the best club experience we possibly can, and everyone on our staff is involved in music or the arts in some way. While we do our part, we remind everyone that the vibe created in the venue is a partnership between us, the people on stage, and you! We all know Baltimore continues to struggle to become a great city, Sonar is here to help achieve that goal.

 Thanks for patronizing our joint.
