Title: Please Vote!
Post by: Medusa on November 02, 2004, 09:14:00 am
Just returned from voting - the line literally stretched down the block!  The hour I had to wait went by quite quickly and I felt good being there.

Last night I started thinking of acronymns for the word VOTE.

My favorite one I came up with:

 Vote Out Tyrannical Extremists

 Any others?

 Cheers

I arrived at my polling location in Takoma Park about 10 minutes before the polls opened. There were ~50 people there ahead of me. By the time I exited, there were at least a hundred folks waiting in line.

Lines were also long at my polling place in Dupont Circle this morning...

Despite the line and the new-fangled electronic voting machines, the poll workers kept everyone moving along at a good pace. I actually arrived at work at my regular time.

in my neighborhood (Doompont), the line stretched down a full block and then halfway around the corner.  I couldn't wait but I'll leave work mid-day to do my part to BEAT THE BUSH!

Sounds like we were at the same place (St. Thomas Church)!

We could very well have been near each other in line, even though we wouldn't have known it (I don't know what you look like).

I voted by absentee ballot last week, so today was a bit of an anti-climax for me personally -- that does not assuage the nervousness of waiting. Damn.

My vote in MD is completely a waste of time seeing as the Dem always takes it....which brings me to yet another chance to bitch about the electoral college bullshit.

 IDEA!

If you insist on having this electoral college crap in doodleville, why not do it another way to make it a little less unfair.

Say, for example Knobhead Bush gets 51% and Kerry 49% of the votes in OH...instead of Bush getting all the electoral college votes, he should get 51% of them and Kerry 49% of them, that would seem to make a little more sense out of a stupid system......no? Still not as democratic as the popular vote system, but better than the shit you all have now.

Being the nice guy I am, I think Blacks and Women should get three votes each, to make up for a time when they didn't have the vote.

Well after believing DC screwed up my registration, I just discovered I am registered so I will be voting shortly.  Kerry is about to have 79.99999999% of the dc vote rather than 79.99999998% of it! woooooooooooooooooo

Well, I went to the poll place with my girlfiend and DAMN there were lots of people there.  And we were sorta in the ghetto.  Old school voting machines, and just two of them.  But the people there said 450 people voted there in 2000, and they had over 120 at 8:45am.

Election day is the only real day i wish i was a doodle.

    quite a buzz going around

someone campaigning for Mary Pat Clarke had cookies. and they were handing them out.

and you know what?  i dont even know what she was running for, but if someone handed me a cookie right before i voted.  It sure would sway my vote a little.

just a thought for you young inspiring politicians.  :)

Ignorant? It's freedom of choice. I choose not to vote and not to whine and bitch about who's elected. They both have their positives and they both have their negatives. I like both of them and don't care which one of them gets elected. End of story.

I laughed at the Manny sign he had at the victory parade. But at last count I believe it was Jeter, 4 rings, Manny 1......Loser.

i don't think that's come out yet...according to drudge the story is "still developing".  i'm anxious to hear more about it but i doubt the major news media will cover it unless it becomes a huge ordeal.

Here's another good omen. Hell froze over:

The Texas panhandle: Up to 7 inches of snow fell. Randall County Clerk Sue Bartolino warned voters to be careful on the roads. A winter weather advisory was posted for the Panhandle and Texas' South Plains, with up to 4 more inches of snow and strong northerly wind expected.

Apparently the voting machines in Philly did not have "votes" in them before the polls-- the numbers on the back of the machines referred to the number of times the machines have been used in an election.

Drudge posting unsubstantiated "breaking news"? I'm shocked.

Mankie, stop that.  There are many local issues that your vote counts for.

In addition, some states already have adopted your idea (New Hampshire) and there is an initiative in Colorado to do just what you are proposing, although it is not likely to pass.

However, the electoral college is designed to give the smaller states (MD) a chance to have a slightly larger voice then they would have against the most populous states in the nation (CA & TX) so folks from MD should be in favor of the system.

From the Post:

"Only a handful of states allow voters to register on election day. In New Hampshire, the Democratic Party helped students at the University of New Hampshire in Durham fill out affidavits changing their residency to that state, along with legal forms to override challenges anticipated by Republicans.

The Bush campaign in recent days has distributed literature warning students of "wide-ranging implications legally and financially" if they register in the Granite State."

How telling....the more people that vote, the worse it is for the Republican party.  They'd be happy if we all stayed home.

 Also from the Post:

"In South Dakota, a federal judge partially granted Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle's request to limit the activities of Republican poll watchers, after he accused his opponent and the GOP of intimidating native American voters.

As part of the ruling, Republican poll watchers are prohibited from following native Americans out of the polling places or from taking down their license numbers as they drive away."

 Now that's classy.

Yep, this would be excellent. So that you see how this thing is followed in Europe, I got a call during the Barcelona - Milan game from a friend telling me that he was in the stadium and asking me whether there were any results from the key states.

as an fyi to you barcelona. . polls on the east coast don't close until 7 or 8 pm, eastern time.  that would include the states of new hampshire, and most of florida and pennsylvania.  the next round won't close until after 9 pm eastern, and so forth through the western states.  for most people's purpose though, the eastern and central time zones contain the important states (with new mexico being mountain, and nevada being pacific time zone).  so, you're friend will have to stay up very late to get any solid information on the poll numbers.

those early numbers were tilted strongly toward women. . .so, all in all, it should lean back towards a tie as the evening wears on (traditionally, women vote more than men in the morning, and men vote more than women in the evening - and bush polls better with men than women).

I was just reading a few European news sites (BBC, Le Monde, Libération) and the coverage is quite extensive. There was a chat on Libé with a reporter stationed in Miami describing the scene, who's voting, what it means, etc. "Tout le monde prend cette élection très au sérieux"

I just picked this up on some other board:

for what it's worth the big money folks on Wall Street - who are arguably smarter and better-connected then all of us - bailed out this afternoon during a early rally on Internet stories that exit polls show Kerry is doing very well in some battleground states. Maybe they know something we don't know and Kerry is doing better then expected. Money still talks.

Maybe the early reports bear some truth.

When I voted very early this morning it was all men. All businessmen. Maybe they weren't polled at that time, but they were out.

i said traditionally.   :)

as for your earlier post. . .the market went down based on the drudge numbers, which were used on wonkette and everywhere else.  drudge has backed away from those numbers (predicatably) as being inaccurate and not trustworthy.

I wasn't interpreting this as a final result. Many people I know in Spain are going to stay up all night following the election results. By the way, I just saw a CNN poll on the most important things in the election to Republican and Democratic voters. According to the poll, the first issue raised by Republicans was moral values. What a funny concept some Republicans have of moral values. This president has been anything but morally correct (obviously he has not been a uniter and a compassionate conservative either).

yikes... notice how they have Bush winning the popular vote (barely) but Kerry winning the electoral vote?   In a way it would be sweet revenge for 2000, but I would hate to see Kerry win by such a sliver... the most criminally incompetent administration in American history deserves more of a repudiation than that.

Looking at the Electoral Vote right now/states marked in red, all I can think is that our country is bleeding.

Right from the top down to the bottom, dripping into the Gulf Of Mexico (surely experiencing red tides soon).

Bleeding from the Heartland, how ironic indeed.

 Very sad.  :(

They will get theirs - as they live the rest of their lives cleaning up Bush's mess & dealing with the repercussions of American hatred rippling through the world this morning.

What I can tell you is that 5 years ago most Europeans liked or at least respected a lot the US. Right now things have changed dramatically. More than 50% of Americans see Bush as a honest guy, almost no one in Europe can't believe it.

What Europeans can't understand is that a blowjob in the Oval Office is enough to impeach a president, however, a very probable set of lies over Irak (and the resulting 1000 US casualties and between 15,000 and 100,000 Iraki deaths) don't mean anything. This is just scary.

I think you've interpreted the numbers incorrectly.  18-30 year olds only acccounted for 17% of all voters.  Identical to 2000.

I'd be curious to know what percentage of them actually showed up though.  The Dems were banking on more.  Guess  The Boss and PJ didn't work hard enough....

I saw that percentage as well. Pretty surprising. Maybe the out-of-state college kids out of state don't know about absentee forms. [/b]
I believe you'll find they were all too busy waiting inline or online for the latest single syllable "it indie band" tickets.

Either that, or when Springboard did his thing they all decided Kerry wasn't hip enough after all.

No, I'm just being a smart ass.  Believe me, I'm just as upset and confused as you are that we've got another 4 years of W in the White House.  However, I'm also sick of being labeled the ugly American because of other Americans decisions.  So, comments like the one you posted from your trip to England tend to annoy me.  Not you, just the people that say them.

Actually,  going by the results, 50%...okay 49% of Americans are rational intelligent people. It's the redneck/rich/stupid/sheep who give you all a bad name.

I felt so sorry for a woman who called into the Gerry Ryan show (radio) this morning. She's an American living in Ireland and was literally in tears because it looks like knobhead got in again. She said she was ashamed and embarrassed at what her country have done during his reign.

Most of the callers were Irish and thought it hilarious that he got in again, but Gerry reminded them that after the laughing is over, the reality of another 4 years of him is nothing to laugh at.

The rest of the world is laughing and pitying you now, and afraid of what he'll do next.

Worse. He was Re-Elected. He won the popular vote. It's like an endorsement that everything he's done is o.k.: "hey...they like me!"

I wish all American citizens would have a mark on their forehead this morning - red, blue, or green (non-voters.) It would help me tremendously as I move through life during the next 4 years.

AP: Bush Wins Race As Kerry Concedes

4 minutes ago   Politics - AP

By CALVIN WOODWARD and RON FOURNIER, Associated Press Writers

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) won a second term from a divided and anxious nation, his promise of steady, strong wartime leadership trumping John Kerry (news - web sites)'s fresh-start approach to Iraq (news - web sites) and joblessness. After a long, tense night of vote counting, the Democrat called Bush Wednesday to concede Ohio and the presidency, The Associated Press learned.

Kerry ended his quest, concluding one of the most expensive and bitterly contested races on record, with a call to the president shortly after 11 a.m. EST, according to two officials familiar with the conversation.

The victory gave Bush four more years to pursue the war on terror and a conservative, tax-cutting agenda â?? and probably the opportunity to name one or more justices to an aging Supreme Court.

He also will preside over expanded Republican majorities in Congress.

"Congratulations, Mr. President," Kerry said in the conversation described by sources as lasting less than five minutes. One of the sources was Republican, the other a Democrat.

The Democratic source said Bush called Kerry a worthy, tough and honorable opponent. Kerry told Bush the country was too divided, the source said, and Bush agreed. "We really have to do something about it," Kerry said according to the Democratic official.

Kerry placed his call after weighing unattractive options overnight. With Bush holding fast to a six-figure lead in make-or-break Ohio, Kerry could give up or trigger a struggle that would have stirred memories of the bitter recount in Florida that propelled Bush to the White House in 2000.

At the beginning of the year I said Ramirez would be AL MVP and Schilling would be Cy Young. NL I had Bonds and Clemens. I'll probably be wrong with Schilling, Santana is gonna be hard to beat. Manny is gonna be a toss up also, that one should be the close race.

I just don't understand this.

 Why doesn't Kerry wait?

What about all of those provisional and absentee ballots yet to be counted in Ohio?

And these senators (surprise!  Republicans), quoted in The Washington Post, need a reality check: "Ohio's Republican senators, George V. Voinovich and Mike DeWine, issued a statement calling on Kerry to concede the state, arguing that he could not make up his deficit with the provisional ballots. 'Senator Kerry should concede defeat and spare the country the turmoil of another drawn-out election,' the statement said."

Kerry should "spare the country the turmoil of another drawn-out election"?  PLEASE!

What about the rest of us that want to be spared another 4 years of G.W. Bush?

Not to mention that there is *no* harm in waiting until EVERYTHING has been counted.

The only things that make me feel better about things today are:

 1. (Also from The Post): "Roughly 120 million people, 60 percent of eligible voters, cast ballots in the election, the Associated Press reported, the highest turnout since 1968" and

 2. Proud that I am part of the overwhelming 90% here in our capital that voted against Bush.  We don't want him here (he's never here anyway).

I feel like going down to The White House with signs (not that it would do anything, except perhaps make me feel a tad better).

 Cheers

yeah, OH sec. of state says that at the most there's like 175,000 ballots left, and that includes absentee ballots and military.  bush has like a 136,000 vote lead in ohio right now.  it's highly unlikely that those remaining ballots would tilt so far into kerry's direction to allow him to carry ohio.

so, with ohio and nevada red, bush has 274, with iowa and new mexico left still (both have bush winning right now).

Drama queen? My mom died last year due to shitty hospital care, only after struggling to pay for prescription drugs for two year. My brother is fighting in Iraq. I've been trying to snag a new job in this really awesome economy for 5 months! Did Bush directly cause all of those problems? Not exactly. Could he have altered things? Yes. He has indirectly caused a lot of hardship in my family's lives, and I don't see any of that changing. I want the rest of the country to get to experience the negative impact of the Bush presidency. Maybe then they will recognize the consequences of their actions.

I have never voted for a Republican.

Yet, ironically, my life has very much improved with Republicans in office.

I found it difficult to find employment during the Clinton years (I had to move to North Carolina to find a full time teaching job), though I finally landed my current job during the second Clinton administration. I've seen my salary increase by 80% in 7 years, and much of it during the Bush administration.

Yes, the unemploment rate has increased a bit during Bush's tenure. But not here in DC. The DC economy is quite strong. Blaming your lack of a job on the Bush administration seems like bullshit to me. When I couldn't find a job for two years, I certainly didn't blame it on the President. Get more training/education, be willing to move across the country for a job, or accept something less than desirable and work your way up.

I know when this contract runs out for me, I'll be looking for a new job. I surely won't look for one that pays me what I get now, I'd be looking for years.

I'm not blaming my lack of a new job on Bush, i'm just saying that if the economy was better in general, and it has slumped during his administration for whatever reasons, it would make thigns easier. Believe me i'm not trying to pass the buck. My other examples are far more related directly to Bush.

Last time I checked, the Alabama National Guard was promoting one weekend a month, two weeks a year. You are right that the possibility always exists, but sending National Guard troops ahead of folks who actually signed on for this sort of thing is something I will never understand. We won't go into the extentions on length of service they are given for whatever reason.

Just hoping, maybe they realize how divided the US and the world are becoming. Even though they have a 3 million vote advantage on the popular vote, I hope they will realize that the country is more divided than in 2000.

Then why did you become a useless lawyer, and not a social worker or teacher?

I also met my true love during the Bush administration, went to my first NASCAR races, and saw my childhood team the Red Sox win the world series. Though the first is the most important, of course.

Your ignorance knows no boundaries.

I've used my law degree the last three months in 3 different states and on 7 different phone banks to ensure that minorities are given the same rights as white folks to vote, to stop the intimidation, and to ensure a fair election. Just this morning I was told not to go to Ohio to assist with the provisional ballots.  And yes, I did all of this for free.

I've spent the last year using my law degree to raise over $7 Million for higher education.  All the while I teach two classes, one on political science and one on the law.

Before that I spent 5 years using my law degree to create non-profit sectors in developing countries to take the burden off of burgeoning governments and allow EU, government, and charitable money to help build strong nations.

I became a lawyer to ensure civil rights for all, defend those that can't defend themselves, and to create strong civil societies.  I may not make a lot of money, but I get to go home feeling good about myself and what I do, and from that I have a great quality of life, even if I struggle financially sometimes.

Even as a "useless" lawyer, I am a social worker and a teacher.

Sounds like you own quality of life has improved under the Bush Administration, as well.

I mean, in terms of advancing your career, and making a difference. Not in terms of finances, of course.

Sorry for being snotty, just being snotty toward your own snotty uncalled for statement.

It's not about me Rhett, and that's the difference between you and me.

I am cetainly not happy Bush is in office because he gives me more opportunities to do good deeds by his poor decisions, and only you would think so.  There will always be places to do good deeds, regardless of who is in power.

I feel badly for the gays who's lives are being trivialized, the minorities who are being persecuted, those without health care who are being ignored, the citizens who's rights are being taken away by this campaign of fear, and for the rest of the world who have no idea what to make of US foreign policy these days.

But hey, you got that 5% increase in your pay, which you used as your measure on the board as to the "irony" of the Republican regime and why it might not be so bad.  But at what cost to others I ask you?

My comment to you was not uncalled for - many people went to the polls yesterday and voted for Bush saying "hey, he put $300 in my hands, how can I not vote for the guy?"  To them I would have said the same thing I said to you and asked the same question - at what cost to others?

What cost to others:

In Irak: estimates of up to 100k (what's the tally for it to be considered a genocide btw?)

In America: 1k+ servicemen, plus amputees, suicides, emotional injuries, etc etc etc...

Which was my point. I think Redsocks inability to find a job in DC for five months has more to do with a combination of his qualifications (or lack thereof) and bad luck than it does the Bush Administration.

Employment for me in my 20's was tough. It was tough to both find and keep a job, and I struggled financially. I think that had to do more with me, and with the fact that I was an underqualified 20something than it did the Administration that was in power.

I mean, goshgolly, the last time I checked, Redsock was an American born, white, heterosexual male. He should be thriving, if not now, well in the next four years.

Well most of THEM don't think it's unjustified. Otherwise, why would two thirds of military spouses (probably even higher among military themselves) voted for Bush?

That's OUR opinion. If they think it's justified, and they lose an arm or two in the process, I'm sure they don't want us pussy liberals feeling sorry for them.

Just because you choose to be in the military doesn't necessarily mean you favor war.  It's more about defending the country.  Hence the question is, how is the war in Iraq defending the country, when there is no proof of WMD's or of the link between them and 9/11and or Al Qaeda?

I didnt think of it as being used by rich, old men? My parents and bro voted for Bush and are not rich. I just considered it doing my part for my country and all my military buddies were over there, and I was there with them. I joined knowing that I could go to war, so crying about it when I went over didnt really seem like a good idea. I can't stand hearing, "well the military has a great college plan, that's why I joined". So that sound like, "It's not what I can do for the military but what the military can do for me". To me, you have to earn what the military gives you for your after military life.

Seven states have laws preventing felons from voting.  Virginia is one of them, DC is not.  Not sure about Maryland.

So I guess the bottom line is that the Democrats lost in 2000 because of Nader, and lost in 2004 because the American people are stupid?

 Do I have it correct?

No, in 2000 he won because of stupidity too.  Nader voters are stupid in their own way, too, for not getting that voting for him gets them the polar opposite of what they want.

Why don't Democrat's admit their shortcomings. Pussies have to blame their losses on others instead of themselves.

There are stupid people all over the world, the fact in the US is that this country is a very conservative one on social issues and a group of far-right people have taken advantage of it to undertake a crazy (to say the least) foreign policy. What Democrats need to do now is try to get part of those social conservatives in their party. How are they going to do it? No idea.

As for criticizing Nader for the loss of the 2000 election, you can blame it on him in some key states or at least in Florida, but the guy has the right to do it and you can't criticize the arguments that made him run for president, he sees Republicans and Democrats as very similar and I can't criticize that belief. Rather than blaming Nader, Democrats should have looked at the possible mistakes they did in that election.

Democrats also need to find a message other than, "We're not them."

I think most of your prominent Democrats have.  I think Kerry did too by not demanding recounts, lawsuits, etc.  There are many Deomcrats who last night and today said that the Party is in real trouble right now due to lack of a common vision and serious downfalls in the red states.

The Party currently has no voice in the midwest and the south and was beaten badly in the swing states on the Same-Sex Marraige issue.  They also lost badly on the three G's - God, Guns and Gays - which they have since the founding of the nation (obvioulsy I'm not saying that the gay issue has been around that long, but right now gays is the current puritanical hot button issue).  Areas that were once deomcratic strongholds based on a platform of Health Care, Social Security and other domestic agenda issues have now gone to the Republicans based on the three G issues.  Kudos to Karl Rove and, to a lesser degree, Newt Gingrich for taking this voting block from the Dems.

Where the Democrats have always fallen short is in voter turnout, and I think what bothers most democrats today is that the notion that if there was huge voter turnout, there was no way the Dem's could lose.  This notion has been shot now with 112-115 Millions voters coming out, and the Dems still losing.  Everybody knew that the Republican stronghold would come out, but most are surprised that Bush's stronghold was 8 Million more than 2000, and I for one was shocked to see it.  If you would have asked me on Monday if 115 Million voters was enough for a big enough Democratic turnout to win, I would have taken it without blinking.

As far as calling folks stupid, that's just the bitterness of losing a long, hard fought battle.  I'm angry and depressed today.  I can't fathom how this election was lost on four issues I see clearly in the Dems favor: Iraq, terror, gays and Bush's moral values.  The Republicans drove the agenda and Kerry did little but succomb to their agenda.  Thirsty's right, it's values, but it makes me feel much better to call them stupid today.  I don't believe it, I don't think it, but I feel better saying it.

Edwards did little for your electoral college, the party had already let you down in the South, but with Gephardt, you likely gain the 11 EC votes in Missouri, where he is beloved.

Now with Wisconsin going to Kerry, take away Bush's 11 votes from Missouri and give them to Kerry, giving Bush 268 and Kerry 263.  That leaves us waiting on Iowa to count their absentees where the difference in votes is about 13,000.  I'm not saying the outcome would have been different, but strides in the midwest would have been just as important as the potential for strides in the south with Edwards, who didn't get you Florida.

Anyhow, as for 2008 - name one good southern democratic candidate?  And that's not me disagreeing with you, I just don't know of one, other then Edwards, and I'm not sure how much weight he carries in the south any longer.

The Dems have much to do before 2008.  Hillary cannot win.

20.4 Million voters aged 18-29 in 2004 (this is roughly half of all eligible 18-29 year old voters, I don't have the percentages of registered voters however).

"When I look at the electoral map, my eyes are drawn not to Florida or Ohio but Missouri. And that makes me wonder if Kerry made the right decision by choosing John Edwards as his running mate.

"Yours truly is a big fan of Edwards as a person and as a future leader. Like Bill Clinton, Edwards has the gift--he's a rare talent. What Edwards does not have, and was never likely to have, is the ability to deliver North Carolina's 15 electoral votes. Polls show George W. Bush leading in North Carolina by ten points. That Edwards may not be able to bring his own state's vote to the Democratic ticket is no criticism of him, nor does it mean he can't win national office himself. It just means North Carolina has lately been voting Republican in presidential contests--in 2000, Bush carried the state by 13 points--and Edwards was never likely to be able to change that.

"Contrast this to Missouri, where Dick Gephardt is beloved as a favorite son. Bush is leading by a small margin in Missouri; in 2000, he carried the state by three points. The Show Me State has many times demonstrated its love of Gephardt--had he been Kerry's running mate, he might well have been able to deliver Missouri and its eleven delegates. Yours truly is also a fan of Gephardt, who might have brought to Kerry's candidacy not only Missouri's votes but moderate populism, labor ties, bipartisan credentials for his help to Bush in the days after September 11, and none of the negatives associated with Edwards's trial-lawyer calling. If Kerry loses by a margin smaller than Missouri's eleven electoral votes, his choice of Edwards over Gephardt may come to be seen as a historic blunder."

From John Kerry's concession speech:

"It was a privilege and a gift to spend two years traveling this country, coming to know so many of you.  I wish I could just wrap you in my arms and embrace each and every one of you individually all across this nation."

This, to me, shows the difference in the 2 candidates, and why Kerry (to me) is much more sincere, human and down-to-earth.

I can never imagine smug President Bush saying the same things, nor saying (as Kerry did at the beginning of his speech today) "I love you" to the crowd, blowing a kiss and nearly breaking down in his speech.

It makes Kerry's loss all the more poignant and sad.

 Oh well.

Time to make the best of things now.

 Cheers

Is this the same as the Moderator Republicans?  Because I totally agree on this one.  I know my father who is a long standing moderate voted for Dukakis because he didn't hear anything from Bush Sr.  Healthcare was the biggest concern of my parents this year.   The biggest hurdle I think is how to handle social welfare programs and making them appeal to the both "core" democrats and the moderate Republicans.   That is going to be one tough order of business.

The Democrats need to get an candidate established now!  Instead of spending wildly on the outdated primary system, where two small states get a say for the rest of the nation,  use the money spent there towards the final presidential race.

Democrats also need to start verifying voter rolls.  Ensure that everyone who thinks they are registered are on the rolls.  Put those voter rolls to the test in every election between now and 2008.  Track any discrepancies reported.   In heavily contested districts absentee and early voting is needed  to flush out problems and ensure that every vote is count.

There also needs to be better coordination between the GOTV orgs.  On top of all the attack ads, people were hammered with calls from so many different orgs.  Little wonder there was resentment towards voting.

The Democratic Party is the party of Michael Moore, millionaire rock stars, lawyers, and snotty intellectual progressives.

The snotty intellectual progressives need to spend less time making fun of rural NASCAR loving blue collar working class social conservatives, and embrace them and give them a bigger say in the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party needs to be more the party of the working man and less the party of I dunno what it even stands for now.

The next Democratic nominee needs to be Southern, he (not she) needs to be a Governor and not a Senator or Congressman, and, like Clinton, needs to come from humble working class roots.

When first entering the Middle East, the True American traveler may at first be alarmed to see men who appear to be of Muslim orientation. Do not panic. In some cases, young Muslim men are not terrorists. Treat the man with respect and attempt to engage him in conversation. Explain to him calmly and respectfully that Allah is a false god, and that he should consider converting to a different, superior religion. Tell him the good news about Jesus Christ and let him know that there is no need to be jealous of Americans, as we are actively working to make his country just like the United States.

sorry smackie, but pollard is right on this one (no matter what gregg easterbrook thinks).  gephardt is pretty despised through most of missouri. . and with a big governor's race this year, i don't think having gephardt would have helped at all.

also. . there's one reason gore lost in 2000: he failed to carry his home state.  if he carries tennessee, he wins (if i've done my addition correctly).  edwards failed to carry his home state as well.  what does that possibly say about the democratic party?  i agree that if the democrats put up a southerner, it has to be governor.  senators can be linked to washington (and the liberal democrat establishment - rightly or wrongly), and that's never a good thing to a southerner, who still believes in states rights.

This is the problem.  Why do people buy into this rhetoric thinking that Kerry would have been lax on terrorism and the like.  This is bullshit.  Remember, this is the guy who actually saw combat, and not hide from it.  Just because he came back and thought the war in Vietnam was wrong, doesn't make him soft.  It makes him look intelligent, like he can absorb information and change his mind.  Instead of the alternative and staying the course, not admitting any fault, or that anything is wrong.

Missouri was electing Dems to state office until this year when for the first time in 80 years Missouri voters put the Republican Party in charge of the Governor's Mansion, the state House and the state Senate.  So I agree, the only way to win a southern state with a dem presidential candidate is to have it be somebody who has recently held state office.

yep. . .louisiana for the first since reconstruction sent a republican to the senate, georgia gave both houses of the state legislature to the republicans, they won the governor's race 2 years ago (since reconstruction as well, i think), and oklahoma gave both state houses to the republicans for the first time in its history.  while the south is trending republican, there are still enough southern, conservative democrats that can get elected as governor.

I said, I didnt want a president that said he wanted to hug me and that he loved me. Sonick asked what I was talking about. I said, try to keep up meaning I was responding to someone elses post. this is what i saw in Kerry. Sure, he changed his mind, and i understand that being a good leader, its hard to make decisions and then go back on them, but i think Bush is the complete opposite where he may make a bad decision and then stick with it as it gets worse.

I'm not sure who you are replying to, but I think the common man thinks of Moore as more of a big shot left wing Hollywood director. Not someone the common man identifies with.

Explain to me why Right wing blowhards are allowed be loud fat men, but Moore gets critized for it.  Although on the left Moore was not a big Hollywood director when he did Roger and Me,  which was a stand for the common man.

Once upon a time the common man was trod on and taken advantage of by big business.  Now a days the common man is although paid better with better working conditions is still taken of advantage of by big business.  The common man having won a decent wage is now more selfish and only cares about itself and thier gas guzzling SUV.  There is also no threat from Russia.  Thus, any idiot offering to lower taxes and protect it with guns and from gays is going to be supported by the common man.  The common man would appear not to care about health care, the environment, corporate greed and corruption.  They would rather those things go unchecked.  Which is why Moore isn't liked.

Of course not being the common man I like what Moore does,  and because its America he is able to use the movies to share his viewpoint with those how share it.  Unfortunately the common man views this a traitorus and unpatriotic.  Thus what is truly wrong with this country.

Heck, lets just blame him for all the troops and civilians killed in WW1, WW2, The Civil War, Korean War and Vietnam War, it's much easier this way. I'm gonna blame him for the "F" I got in History class my Junior Year in High School. I'm gonna be so happy to call my Mom up tonight and put it in her face that it wasn't actually my fault and that George W. Bush shoulda been grounded and not me......This is fun....The next time my girlfriend gets mad at me for something I'll just say It was Bush's fault and to be mad at him, then we'll be happy again. Wooooo Hooooo for this easy solution to all my problems.    :p

It is pretty clear in the analysis so far that what won this election for Bush (because it won Ohio) was the issue of gay marriage.  Not jobs, or Iraq, or supreme court justices, or the environment or many other important issues.  But rather, making something that is already illegal, even more illegal.

 It is really quite amazing.

I think this election proved that the Democrats could have won an election and not carry a single state from the old south (not that I agree with this logic, politically).  A tighter focus on the hispanics in the Sun Belt or a better showing in the midwest and the Dems can ignore making any in roads in the south.  All they neded was Ohio in this election and it would have proven correct.

yeah, democrats can off-set losses in the south and even the midwest by focusing on new mexico, arizona and nevada.  but bush pulled in alot of hispanic voters this year (course, this may be skewed if there was a large cuban turnout in florida, since they are still overwhelmingly republican).  course, i think that wisconsin and minnesota are trending really republican these days, and they could help off-set sun belt losses. . .heck, if bush had won wisconsin (provided he wins iowa), he wouldn't have needed ohio.

there is a perfect candidate sitting in the midwest for the democrats: tom vilsack.  governor of iowa, and if he can keep his wife's mouth shut, he could really force republican's to keep the midwest.

The whole country is leaning Republican these days because they are dictating the agenda.  Karl Rove did an amazing thing in this election: he won a very close election without upsetting the hard right.  If anything, he upset the center right by staying hard line.  They drove the Gods, Guns and Gays agenda hard into the bible belt and midwest and got rural Ohio out to vote.

The Dems failed to get a clear and consistent message out, especially on a domestic agenda and spent nearly the entire election on the defensive, despite a Presidential approval rating at or below 50%.  Amazing.

well, here's some good news:

Aides: Ashcroft Likely to Leave AG Post

By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) is likely to leave his post before the start of President Bush (news - web sites)'s second term, senior aides said Thursday.

Ashcroft, 62, is described as exhausted from leading the Justice Department (news - web sites) in fighting the domestic war on terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Stress was a factor in Ashcroft's health problems earlier this year that resulted in removal of his gall bladder.

Ashcroft is expected to resign before Bush's Jan. 20 inauguration, said aides who spoke only on condition of anonymity. They said there is a small chance he would stay on, at least for a short time, if Bush asked him.

The attorney general has not officially informed his staff of his future plans, spokesman Mark Corallo said.

At a news conference, Bush said he hasn't made any decisions about his Cabinet.

Ashcroft, a former two-term governor and senator from Missouri, has long been a favorite among Bush's base of religious conservatives. He also is a lightning rod for Democrats and other critics on issues ranging from the anti-terrorism Patriot Act, which expanded rules for eavesdropping, to abortion rights and gun control.

Names that have been floated in recent weeks as a possible replacement include Ashcroft's former deputy, Larry Thompson, who would become the first black attorney general. Others include Marc Racicot, who was Bush's campaign manager, and White House general counsel Alberto Gonzalez, who would give Bush a notable Hispanic appointment.

maybe its a bit fanciful, but i've seen guiliani's name pop up for this job too.  i think that bush is saving gonzalez for the supreme court.

Elizabeth Edwards Diagnosed With Breast Cancer (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A25350-2004Nov4.html)

Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards, was diagnosed with breast cancer the day her husband and Sen. John Kerry conceded the presidential race.

Spokesman David Ginsberg said Mrs. Edwards, 55, discovered a lump in her right breast while on a campaign trip last week. Her family doctor told her Friday that it appeared to be cancerous and advised her to see a specialist when she could.

She put off the appointment until Wednesday so as to not miss campaign time. Mrs. Edwards had a needle biopsy performed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where Dr. Barbara Smith confirmed the cancer, Ginsberg said.

He said the cancer was diagnosed as invasive ductal cancer. That is the most common type of breast cancer, and can spread from the milk ducts to other parts of the breast or beyond.

More tests were being done to determine how far the cancer has advanced and how to treat it, he said.

Ginsberg said spirits are high at the Edwards household. "Everybody feels good about it, that this is beatable," he said.

Edwards, who leaves his North Carolina Senate seat in January, said in a statement, "Elizabeth is as strong a person as I've ever known. Together, our family will beat this."

going back to our earlier discussion, what do y'all think about this:

The lesson of this year's election is simple: The Republican base beats the Democratic base. Bush and Kerry were both excite-the-base candidates, like Bush and Gore in 2000. So these two elections give us a pretty good indication of how the parties' bases stack up against each other.

Four years ago, they were dead even -- the 50-50 nation. Today, the Republicans are three or four points ahead -- as Michael Barone wrote after the off-year elections of 2002. (By the way: if they ever award a Nobel Prize for political analysis, Barone ought to get the first one. Maybe every one. He's a genius. Not surprisingly, he was the first person on Tuesday night to see that the exit polls had gone haywire.) The Republicans are ahead, not by a lot but by enough. If the Democrats keep nominating excite-the-base candidates who run Shrumian campaigns, expect to see the same results. (Future delegates for Hillary Clinton: are you listening?)

The best way to see how the two sides stack up is to look at one of those red-and-blue maps that seem to breed these days. Divide the country into three parts: Kerry's base, Bush's base, and the Midwest. Kerry's base is the Northeast -- everything North of the Potomac River and East of Ohio -- together with the Pacific Coast and Hawaii. (They don't call it the "left coast" for nothing.) Kerry swept his base 194-0. Bush's base is the South and the rest of the West. Bush swept his base too, by an electoral score of 237-0, assuming the New Mexico vote holds up. But Bush's base is bigger. Which means Kerry needed to nearly sweep the Midwest to catch up. He did carry the Midwest, but not by much: 58-49 in the electoral college. Bush carried Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa -- and he could have lost any of the last three without changing the result.

This is a common historical pattern. Several times we have had elections that pitted the Northeast -- today, the Northeast plus the Pacific Coast -- against the South and West. The electoral math is always the same: In order to have a chance, the candidate of the Northeast must sweep the Midwest. That hasn't happened since William McKinley, Karl Rove's hero. Instead, the Midwest always divides. Michigan and the upper Midwest usually follow the Northeast. But Ohio and Missouri, sometimes joined by a couple of their neighbors, go with the candidate of the South and West, giving that candidate the victory. Woodrow Wilson in 1916, Harry Truman in 1948, Richard Nixon in 1968, George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004 -- all followed the same formula. In each case, the winner nearly swept the South and West, added a few Midwestern states (always including Ohio and Missouri), and won the election.

By now, the lessons should be clear. The Northeast and Pacific Coast aren't enough to win the White House. And Ohio and Missouri do not follow New York and Massachusetts.

For Democrats, the picture is getting worse. The Midwest is trending Republican. Consider these figures (in 2000 and 2004 I have added Nader's votes to the Democratic total):

                         1988                             2000                                         2004

Dukakis   Bush             Gore-Nader        Bush                Kerry-Nader      Bush

 Minnesota         52.9%   45.9                53.1                  45.5                 51.8                  47.6

 Wisconsin         51.4      47.8                51.4                  47.6                 50.3                  49.3

 Iowa                 54.7      44.5                50.7                  48.2                 49.6                  50.1

 Missouri            47.9      51.8                48.6                  50.4                 46.1                  53.4

Gore-plus-Nader ran basically even with or behind Dukakis in all four states. Kerry-plus-Nader ran at least one percentage point behind. Bush ran ahead of his father's winning 1988 performance in all four states; the differences range from 12 points in Wisconsin to more than 5 points in Iowa. (Maybe Iowans read Mickey Kaus and felt the need to atone for their caucus votes.)

Needless to say, Democrats aren't likely to win when they can't top Dukakis in the Midwest. And this is a moving target. Bush won Missouri in 2000; this time, he won Missouri and Iowa. With similar candidates in 2008, the Republicans might win all four. Ohio could be the least of the Democrats' problems.

Still, the news is not all bad for Democrats, and not all good for Republicans. By historical standards John Kerry ran a very strong race, and George W. Bush was a shaky incumbent. Bill Clinton would probably have won this election by five or six points. Just as John McCain would have beaten Kerry in a landslide.

Which leads to a piece of conventional wisdom that's actually pretty wise: America divides into red and blue because those are the colors the parties give us. Perhaps both sides need to see that the smart move is to paint with a different color. Purple beats red or blue, every time. In 2008, when Rudy Giuliani faces off against Barack Obama, those maps will look very different.

So according to excerpts I just read from an upcoming newsweek article (yes, on the Drudge Report) former President Clinton tried to get Kerry to support local bans on gay marriage and Kerry said he would never do it.  Thank god, I don't know what Clinton was thinking.

I fucking hate Michael Moore.  In a lot of ways, I think his implied association with the Democratic Party (done by the media) fucked the polls up even more.  Every time someone saw him on TV, they automatically associated him with Kerry, which was just plainly false.

quite honestly, I hate to say this, but I can't conceive of a time in this country that we will have a black president or woman president.  we haven't even had on for vp yet, and only one viable candidate for vp with ferrarro back in the 80's.  especially now with all of the "red states" and there seemingly backwards way of thinking, sadly I don't think it will ever happen.

No I don't.  I don't think he can see that far ahead.  Plus I don't think a Clinton '08 ticket is a viable one, and I don't even know where that got started.  I can't see her making that leap, nor the country for that matter.

Abraham Lincoln described himself c. 1838–39 as "black" and his "complexion" in 1859 as "dark", but whether he meant either in an ancestral sense is unknown. The Charleston Mercury described him as being "of ... the dirtiest complexion".

Republicans did a great job to make this about "education" (while threading the needle of not making it about COVID vax/masks in schools) while McAuliffe just kept saying "Trump".

True coin flip. I do think the two-weeks of "Youngkin may actually lead" polls will get Dem turnout up but I have a sinking suspicion Youngkin will win by less than Princess Blanding's vote total.

I think LG and AG are safe. Weird election.

Yeah, but its not Connecticut. The side that just lost an election always comes out more motivated to vote in the next one. This happens in California too we just don't talk about it because the Dems only win by 20% statewide instead of 25%. But when it happens in VA, it can flip a race still.

the maga base is super motivated right now and REALLY want a win on this

His eyes appear intact but his face does not.

And yes, the son committed suicide and the entire incident happened after he was placed on a psych hold but no beds could be found so they sent him home which led to some changes to VA's mental healthcare laws.

Based on local turnout reports, VA is on track to break 3 million votes, which would surpass gubernatorial record of 2.6M set in 2017.

Not clear which side that benefits, but this isn't a scenario in which turnout in blue areas is falling through the floor. #VAGOV

seems to me this would favor the dems.  as it has been said a million times, this election comes down to turnout.  the right is highly motivated (certainly aided by biden's recent slump), so we know they will show up.  so high turn-out implies lots of dems, since they are the variable.

50% Biden (D), 49% Trump (R)

Youngkin smartly distanced himself from Trump and that was one of keys for him, right?

Other keys

Yeah, well insulting and dismissing these people is not going to win elections. Figure out what you need to do to get there votes, do it, and go out and win an election.

some crazy turnout for offyear election
2.65 mil cast...only won by 70k more votes
it's a lot, but also not that much

(all votes haven't been counted, so numbers could change)

GOP really got the turnout
Biden did win by 10 points

Trump got 1.962 mil in 2020
Youngkin got 1.664 in 2021

almost 800k people who voted for Biden didn't bother to vote in this election ...ultimately the fault kinda lies there
I do think people thought Terry-ible was a shoe-in so didn't show up

So you think the huge swing above among white women is due to white female Biden voters simply not showing up rather than independents or Trump Hating Republicans who voted for Biden but found Youngkin more likeable than Trump?

Youngkin got 1.671 million. Mac got 1.592 million. Both got more votes than any other candidate for governor in Virginia history. Youngkin got more than 500K more votes than the 2017 Republican candidate, an almost 50% increase. Are you going to say that that 500K+ increase is due to people not showing up for Mac?

totally possible...right?

all I'm saying is 2.4 mil people in VA pulled the lever for a Dem in Nov 2020 and what happened to that 800k less
Gotta imagine if ALL of those 2.4 voted again in 2021...I thing Terry-the-terminated might have a job

So I blame at least 500k VA voters who just didn't bother to vote this year...especially with the laws that made voting easier
no-excuse absentee voting
45 day early voting
these things didn't exist only 2 years ago
They really had No-excuse not to vote ....so FUCK THEM, not the white women who actually got motivated (albeit for a candidate I don't like)

In New Jersey, Jack Ciaterelli’s campaign was tenacious.  For months and months every time I turned on the TV there was Jack telling me New Jersey is broken and only he can fix it. It seemed like every time  I watched a YouTube video there was a Jack4NJ ad with Jack telling me Phil Murphy just doesn’t get it in front of a grotesque picture of Phil Murphy. It was an onslaught

In early ads he came across as a pure a-hole so they pivoted to ads with him in a pink shirt high fiving women and minorities.

When I walked outside, there were Jack signs, pamphlets . . .

Meanwhile, I saw a Phil Murphy ad on TV about once a month. Never got a targeted ad on YouTube or elsewhere on the internet from him.  Never saw signs.

On Election Day, there were rows of 100s of Jack signs along the Highway.  A few barely legible Murphy signs lost in the sea of Jack signs .

Tactically, the Dems got crushed. It made you wonder if they were even trying. Which is the story of the Dems - in congress, in the media, in controlling narratives - everywhere today it seems

This article from October 25 says the spending  in  New Jersey was about equal. So I would say there's three possibilties for the phenomenom that you are seeing.

1. You're a white male who watches lots of typical white male tv shows and sports and the Republicans are targeting their denmographic with their ads.

2. The Koch Brothers/ Russians are funding the Republican advertising, with lots of unreported spending.

3. The Republicans have lots more yard signs up because they're the ones with the yards.

https://apnews.com/article/business-elections-new-jersey-election-2020-phil-murphy-3d00183523c21301c03b8d32fa82a934

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s Republican candidate for governor Jack Ciattarelli has nearly matched incumbent Democrat Phil Murphy’s spending in the election so far, though the governor has about five times more cash on hand going into the final week of campaigning.

Ciattarelli has spent about $12.4 million so far with Murphy expending nearly $12.6 million, according to the latest data from the Election Law Enforcement Commission. Murphy as $3.5 million cash on hand compared with nearly $700,000 for Ciattarelli. The governor has brought in more than $16 million compared with $13.1 million for Ciattarelli in the period between the June primary and Oct. 19.

this basically happened in MD when Hogan won the first time... the Dem Anthony Brown (he was O'Malley's Lt. Governor) must have just assumed he was getting elected and I hardly saw any signs, etc from him during the general.  during the primaries it was an entirely different story, signs everywhere so as often is the case in MD the primary is the real election.. when I voted during the general there was no line at all in the evening at a PG county polling site, so guess a bunch of Dem voters assumed he was a lock and stayed home..  Hogan campaigned on his BS Water Tax platform and swayed a bunch of Baltimore County voters in his direction

Modern American politics is about getting your base out… energizing your base

Something Terry McAuliffe absolutely did not do. I hope we can agree on that… He gave me no reason to vote for him other than his pathetic resort to linking Youngkin with Trump

Do we need to reach out to independent voters? Of course but it’s not the priority. You wouldn’t want to lose your base by going after the middle.

It just depends on how we define that group.

Someone will doubtlessly jump in and say energizing the Democratic base is what Bernie does but I disagree. The Democratic base is not progressive voters.

The reason why Youngkin won was because a good share of anti-Trunmp voters voted for Youngkin because they weren't happy with the perceived left wing turn they believe education has taken and because Youngkin was able to distance himself enough publically from Trump, even if he was talking to him on the phone all the time.

I just disagree with your approach of always blaming people for not voting.
so I do get it, but fuck them...they are willing to support dem policies when it's coinvent and I'm sure complain when the GOP takes charge
Voting in VA in 2021 was about as easy as it could get
I think if you could ask those 500k biden voters if they could do nov 2nd over again, they would vote for Terry-the-I-don't-know-what-you-stand-for-but-you-are-a-dem-and-not-GQP in a heart beat...at least 3 out of 4.

The wokeness excuse doesn’t really hold water. It’s just rebranded fear mongering a la DER GONNA TAKE MA GUNZ AWAY that GOP operatives know how to execute oh so well.

Just like CRT it was never going to happen. They just know how to rile up their base and get them to the polls.

Blame Terry for sitting on his ass and not running an effective campaign if anything.

I think Dems think the middle of this country is socially liberal but financially conservative and the reality is the ideological middle of this country who decides elections is actually financially liberal and socially conservative. And when some people say Dems lose by being too woke, they're articulating this divide in a clunky (but still true) way.

Would Democrats win Oklahoma if everyone was forced to vote?

As far as Virginia why are we so sure Democrats would win on a statewide level if everyone was forced to vote?

Republicans don’t want to suppress all votes just Democrat votes.

well, maybe not OK, but I think the population of NOVA/Charlottesville/Richmond is bigger than the rest of the state...so yes I think VA would be blue if everyone voted (this whole forced to vote I never said)
you are correct, they actively come up with ways to suppress the dem vote...these elections are won on so few vote that it makes a huge impact

obviously not, just like repubs aren't going to win california.  implied in this statement is "in competitive districts", i.e. where it's worth doing something.

Republicans don’t want to suppress all votes just Democrat votes.

that was also implied, but thanks for bringing that to the fore.  obviously they don't want to shoot themselves in their collective foot.

no, i'm saying we all play with words.  you originally said "in much lower numbers" - that's a matter of interpretation, and the lower income voters increased their participation in 2020, closing the gap.  you also said things like "I would bet you 90% of Virginians have no idea how many percentage points Biden won Virginia by…" and "Hell I bet you 20% of Virginians are convinced Trump beat Biden and with your logic they thought “I better stay home cause the Republican has this in the bag!”" i give you credit for counching you statements with "i bet" but you then proceeded to barrel forward as if your bets were gospel.  we all do it, so you might wanna check yourself.

Also, this was always a view on the National Vote...kinda got jammed into a VA state vote this time around, and not willing to bet the house on that for sure

So the fat lady has not finished singing in the VA HOD

https://www.newsweek.com/virginia-begins-first-recount-state-races-that-will-determine-if-gop-reclaims-majority-1655584

What’s the over/under that Dems hold on to that majority?

Edit… zero chance.  Hoping for a tie
However, if both races are potentially reversed after the recounts, Virginia's House would be locked at 50-50 at the statewide levels, which would likely force the parties to create some compromises.

Ok, one silver lining to T-macs disgraceful loss, election reforms are not partisan

Take Virginia, for example. In 2020, Democratic governor Ralph Northam and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly enacted 45 days of no-excuse absentee voting, permitted Sunday voting, made Election Day a state holiday, and passed automatic voter registration for anyone with a Virginia driver’s license. That year, a record number of Virginians cast their ballots, and Democrats fared well. But a year later, voters set another turnout record. This time, Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin won the governorship and flipped the Virginia House of Delegates red. These types of election reforms are truly nonpartisan. They aren’t designed to benefit any one party over another. When we make voting accessible, the voters are the real winners.

Is Youngkin worth of his own thread? If a teacher is teaching something that you don’t like, make sure you rat them out. Did you hear about the teacher who was teaching integration in calculus class? Shameful.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/01/24/youngkin-virginia-mask-mandates-ban/

In the interview, Youngkin also touted a tip line for parents to report to the state any school officials they find to be behaving objectionably — including teaching “divisive” subjects. Youngkin has issued an executive order and is backing legislation that seeks to ban concepts such as critical race theory, an academic construct about the history of systemic racism.
“We’re asking for folks to send us reports and observations,” Youngkin said, “help us be aware of … their child being denied their rights that parents have in Virginia, and we’re going to make sure we catalogue it all. … And that gives us further, further ability to make sure we’re rooting it out.”

Like take an Elizabeth Warren idea and water it down 20% and it generally will poll quite well. The elements of the Affordable Care Act: poll quite well. A single payer option: polls quite well. Increased minimum wage: polls quite well. Class warfare in general: polls quite well.

My point is Dems think middle of the road voters deep down want transgender bathrooms bills passed but face an internal conflict on who to vote for because they also want lower taxes . . . when, in reality, what they want is to never have to think about racism but are, in fact,  quite down with massively higher corporate taxes and infrastructure and jobs spending and things that put more money in their pocket.

The Dems lost white-working-class voters when they stopped acting like that group had economic challenges to address and started talking about how privileged they are compared to African-Americans or Latinos. (Then they lost Latinos when they started calling them Latinx, a thing none of them asked for.)

Let me just make sure I have this clear: you would like us to sound off on if your wife, Celeste, is a person we consider atypical writ large?

No, I meant are her politics atypical. Meaning she's a champion of the working class like Bernie, but doesn't really identify with all the identity politics of the Left. (and that doesn't make her racist.)

Regardless, Celeste is not who I, or really anyone, has in mind when they talk about a middle-of-the-road voter or a swing voter. I feel she's a pretty solid Democratic voter, yeah?

Yes, solidly Democratic. Democratic Socialist even. But more in line with working class issues than gender and racial identity issues.

OK, well, yeah, a Democratic Socialist is probably atypical by default. But regardless, what Celeste is or isn't doesn't speak to the correctness (or incorrectness) of the "Julian theory" of what a swing voter looks like.

I don’t trust polling on this….it’s all in how you ask the question etc

People in America on average are fairly libertarian on economic issues: keep the government off of my back (taxes low) and let me keep my hard earned money.

And I guess my theory is that a white working class swing voter would be likely to be enthusiastic about Bernie's agenda, if they didn't have Fox News telling them Bernie is a Communist.

I think they'd be more enthusiastic about Bernie's agenda if it came out of Pete Buttigieg's mouth and every person who took part in a BLM protest HATED this hybrid Pete Buttigieg/Bernie person loudly on Twitter for reasons.
