Circle Jerks and GBH -- July 15th @ 9:30 Club
-
anybody play guitar? Í'm gonna buy a cheap acoustic guitar and I'm trying to decide between the Fender DG-14S, DG-16, and the Johnson JG-D35-CN cutaway. Any advice?

and for that Jay Farrar show
Jay will be accompanied by Mark Spencer (Blood Oranges), Anders Parker (Varnaline) & Judd Ehrbar (Varnaline) | Anders Parker opens
-
Actually it's Anders Osborne opening for Jay, not Anders Parker.

That sounds correct, I just forgot his last name, he opened for him when he played at the Birchmere, wasnt bad.
I actually just copied and pasted this from www.jayfarrar.net. (http://www.jayfarrar.net.)

Actually twangirl, I am almost sure it is Anders Parker, since he played with him last time and is also the leas singer of Varnaline. Anders Osborne is different
-
fight fight fight
-
yikes did you get a load of the ticket prices for those show?
$40 - Dave Gahan
$20 - The Smithereens
$17.50 - The Circle Jerks and G.B.H.
Gahan will sellout, The Smithereens are a band I love dearly but their recent stuff is lacking and twenty smackers is a bit dear. I know lots of old school punkers may still dig The Circle Jerks but how about the kids. And what exactly did G.B.H. contribute besides "City Baby attacked by rats". I'm also guessing both these bands are on the umpteeth replacement member.
-
Will the Farrar show sellout? Would love to hold off on buying tickets till I'm at the club, which won't be for a couple of weeks.

Can't remember if he sold out the birchmere last year or not, if not, it was close.

I am aware of both Anderses, and am a long-time Varnaline fan. But, Jay Farrar's agent has advised us that Anders Osborne is the support act. It's possible he may be mistaken, but not likely.

Well something is strange then because :

Hmmm.I will check this out.
Too bad Eric Heywood isn't on the east coast dates!
-
Yep, we were given incorrect info. Agent had a brain fart. It is Anders Parker opening for Jay Farrar. Thanks for bringing this to my attention Jadetree!

No problem, thanks for looking into it, any way you can convince him that they need to have Tim Easton open on the east coast as well, and might as well get them to bring Heywood. ;)

cut and paste from the blackcat site.....
SAT AUG 2- RHETT MILLER (early show) $12 mainstage 7:00
FRI AUG 8 - THE WALKMEN, FRENCH KICKS $10 Mainstage 9:30
-
Boy, Rhett sure gets around doesn't he? Shouldn't he be home caring for his pregnant wife?
He's also playing for free at the Kennedy Center June 29, and we'll also catch him at Bumbershoot in Seattle on August 31.

June 29th, is a Sunday.... what time is the show again, I forget....
Will you drive there?
-
No doubt we will walk there rather than drive...or take the Metro to Foggy Bottom and walk from there. No doubt we will get there plenty early.
All Millenium Stage shows start at 6 PM sharp, and apparently Rhett is opening (which is actually a good thing, because then we can get up and leave during Nickel Creek if they suck)
Nickel Creek, a bluegrass revival trio, has been touring for more than a decade, bringing contemporary flair to traditional rhythms. Rhett Miller, lead singer of the Old 97??s, opens with a solo performance that folds upbeat pop rock into ??alternative? country tunes.

Of course you may tag along with us two if wifey can't make it in time.
That's also ODS weekend, the night before...will wifey be able to get away a little early for that one? Apparently, they have an early start time...

Oh she will be lucky to get away with it two days in a row.... We will have to see. Perhaps she will campaign for a wekend off.
We have never been to the Kennedy center, so would love some company going to the show. Plus a free show with nicklecreek, I bet you two wont smell nearly as bad as at least half of the audience....
-
Hey Andrew, are you still at the same email address?

sailordancer@notalent.com
Yea, I just emailed you back....
the IM thing on the board works as well.... I always forget about it though.
-
It's funny...my work is getting so paranoid about viruses that they are now banning even hotmail. I wonder if chat boards will be next.

Mine, too. I'm thinking it could be a temporary thing. Is that gov't-wide?
-
we have been banned from using any IM programs that show text on the other persons screen as you type......They check for people using such software and physically come around to tell people off.
No one has said anything about hotmail at the NIH yet though.
-
We just came in yesterday to find that all of the web-based email sites were blocked. Lots of complaining followed. It's not as if we have much real work to distract us here.
-
they won't let us access any im type program and you can't open any attachment that goes to your non work account. they've put on filters so everything will jam up. and i've found if you access amazon or ebay too often that will jam up too here.

10 bucks is expensive? well, compared to some i guess it is.... but if the bands are worth it (which the bands above are subject to debate), then 10 bucks rules

FRI SEPT 12- TURBONEGRO $15 mainstage 9:30
-
Wow Closed for Repairs is playing three nights straight nights! I love that band! I wonder how much the cover is?
-
Turbonegro are a bunch of extremely loud Scandanavians. To quote Pitchfork: "...his strapping adopted Norwegian parents had a lot of sex, and how when he first saw Turbonegro in Oregon they managed to turn on an entire party of women (and men 'coming to grips with their feminine side'). That this band of frumpy metal heads ?? men that could almost pull of black sweat suits ?? were 'Norway's greatest band ever.'"
To paraphrase my friend Nico: "Imagine the music a band of post-modern Vikings would make if they really really liked The Stooges but also bought Spinal Tap ?? The Album for more than laughs."
-
Lulu, The Kills like to 'fuck and fight', and they use their Cat Claws when doing so. :D
Not sure at all if you would like Turbonegro. What I've heard is okay. Harder rocking Swede Rock, ala Norway, along the lines of Division Of Laura Lee with a little more metal but not speed metal.
-
The Sex Pistols! Details please...
-
I've tried several times to get on the Volume mailing list so I can get in on these presales, but I never seem to get anything.
Is there a secret to being added to the list?
-
Well, I figured out the Sex Pistols password, but I'm still curious about getting on the actual Volume mailing list.
Thanks.
Skeeter
-
Has the Sex Pistols show already gone on sale??!!? My my, guess I'll be playing this one by ear.
Also, anyone have any clue if the Fountains of Wayne show might get close to a sellout? I have a friend convinced it will.
-
I will let everyone know when I get my copy of volume and the new password, OK?

It looks like the Blackcat is getting sort of repetitive.
-
why? or rather how?
-
I might be wrong but the Closed for Repairs days are pretty usual. Also, Q AND NOT U, Luna, and The Kills (I might be wrong on this one) have played pretty recently.
-
Q and not U and Luna both last played last year, I cant remember about the kills.... They only just blipped on my radar.
Still none of them are actually bad bands, are they?
I suppose you would complain if the beatles and the smiths played at the blackcat a couple of times a year too?
-
you and me both.

I started picking mine up at Melody Records in dupont because they seem to get volume long before I do. Also makes me wonder how special it is if you can pick one up with the special super secret password from a stack in a music store. I feel so unloved. Where's that Seth fan club post again?
-
The Kills opened for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in April. But they've come out with an album and gotten some buzz in the meantime.
Luna plays DC all the damn time. Not the Black Cat's fault....I just wish it were some other band playing that often.
-

That's exactly my point, I wouldn't complain if they were good bands, it is just that many of these bands are pretty awful. But yes, it is a musical taste issue, so I wouldn't have any problem if you didn't agree with me. It was a personal opinion, if Grandaddy and the Pixies played every month, I wouldn't complain.

So I've only heard one Grandaddy song -- sounds like Alan Parsons with a bit of indie quitar thrown on the top.

I went to both shows. Nothing against them but not my type of music. I left both shows after a few songs. Anyway, it was not my intention to trash these bands. I actually like the Blackcat a lot and enjoy going there to try to see if I like any new band.

The previous example said the Smiths and the Beatles, so I guessed I could also go back in time. Anyway, if you prefer it this way, let's replace them by Interpol or Ballboy.
-
Well I must be an ignorant bastard cause I tried a shit load of words and nevr got the Sex Pistols password right. Still trying to find out how to get on the volume mailing list but can't do that either! Maybe I'll go back to bed and try again when I wake up later! :)

I find they vary -- some months, there are multiple shows that are fantastic at Black Cat. But another month, it will be the 9:30 Club that brings in a bunch of bands I want to see. Thank goodness for them both.

That is exactly the main reason why I try to visit the 9:30 board as much as possible. This is the only place I have to check out new bands. I remember back at home I used to watch MTV's 120 minutes. Back in the early nineties, (along with a Spanish magazine called Ruta 69) that was the best way to check out new bands in that part of Europe. Unfortunately, today everything is Eminem, Britney, Radiohead, stupid new punk bands... so basically this is the only way I have to get new good albums. I apologize for my ignorance, but I don't know Idlewild. I will check them this week before. As for The Fall, I only have a couple of their albums, but will probably see them. Lots of respect for them.

I'm with you *exactly* Barcelona. But there are still so many bands, and it's still hard to get a feel for what kind of bands the folks on the boards like, so you know who's on your musical 'wave length.' Enough folks have mentioned Idlewild that I definitely want to check them out.
As an FYI, 120 Minutes has been on MTV2 all along, and it's still a great guide -- although last month they changed the name, time and running time. Now it's "Subterranean," on Friday nights and it's only an hour (which really, really pisses me off). But, there are videos by lots of bands that come through town. Watching that show got me to Soundtrack of our Lives (which was awesome), and kept me away from Bright Eyes (just not my cup of tea).
See ya on the boards!
PS, if you like sunny power pop, the Fountains of Wayne show at 9:30 on Tuesday, July 8, should be good. Their new album is as catchy as hell.

I too have found great things through the board... But these days I listen to more independant internet radio stations like woxy and kexp to avoid losing touch.
idlewild are Scottish rockers, rapidly becoming poppier. They normally put on a great show although familiarity of their material is recommended for an enjoyable concert experience.
Get copies of the remote part and 100 broken windows....

hey, no way, that's funny - he's a friend of a friend. There's another guy named Patrick he knows also, know him?
-
Bags and The Scientist, thanks for the info. I think I will check both Idlewild and Fountains of Wayne. Yesterday I tried to get both albums at DCCD and the other store on 18th Street but wasn't able to get them. Will check the shows. Thanks also for the information on the radio stations and the new version of 120 Minutes.
-
I am listening to Idlewild now, and I'm so happy. I took the scientist's advice and got "The Remote Part" and "100 Broken Windows." [I got them at Borders, which makes me sad, but I got to listen to them at those listening stations where you just scan the barcode.]
Now I will absolutely not miss the show, like I did for Longwave, Ash and The Oranges Band. I so regret all those shows I've missed!!
Thanks. by the way, Scientist, I forgot who you used to be...I hate that folks can change their displayed name. :D

my name is Markie, with an RRRRRRRRRR not mankie, and I am a scientist. I am British, not British wannabee like half the board, and Mankie.
I am glad you all liked idlewild. The albums took a while to grow on me, listen plenty of times before the show to maximize your enjoyment.
CD game exchange on 18th by columia has 2 copies of the remote part, but they are in the indie section in the far right hand corner at the bottom, not the rock section.
As for other shows ash was brilliant, Oranges band were crap, we left after two songs, but they played after Mclusky, bad mistake. Mcluskys pain and sadness is so much more sad and painful than anyone else's.

Two things:
1. 100 Broken Windows is fantastic.
2. I'm not sure that The Rolling Stones could hold my attention after a Mclusky show, let alone those Baltimore wankers. I mean, if Mclusky take more drugs than a touring funk band, then they take waaaay more drugs than the Oranges.

Double check.
The oranges were really shit though, right?
I think I saw a rattlesnake that looked like you.
-
If it's the Oranges Band that you are talking about, they do not suck. I thought they were great opening for The Breeders at the Ottobar in B'more.
-
sure, Oranges band might have been fine supporting a well past their sell by date Breeders, but they were not very useful following the on form, hard rocking, more songs than a song convention, Mclusky.
The oranges bands video was on subterranean the other night. The song was alright, but did not strike me as being outstanding in any way.
-
The Breeders last album may not have been very good, but you can't deny that Last Splash still sounds great. They were certainly not past their prime at the show I saw in 2002. Other members of the board can attest to that.
Your McLusky example is poor. They are an incredibly strong band. Even Andrew WK would come off as weak following them.
I still like The Oranges Band.

(1) You fellas were up late talking about this shit! I was decompressing from a fantastic Fountains of Wayne show. Thank god the boys are back on it; after the last show I was worried. Still, it was an odd show -- talk about a range of ages. My friend and I actually thought there was a family reunion taking up the entire left balcony, because it looked like all kinds of kids, parents, aunts & uncles and grandparents!!!
(2) Isn't taking long to love "The Remote Part." I'm on my third listen, and it is great. Woo hoo! I also bought Ash, the Ataris and Notwist...we'll see how those fare when I have the time to listen to them as well.

Why? Mclusky did support them.
Dont you mean the choice of which band went on first was poor?

Fountains of Wayne are great arent they!? My girlfriend adores them , and I got to see them in Wisconsin last week....and bought thier CD yesterday. I wanted to see them last night, but was still in the midwest :(
I wouldve been nice to see them without all of the Wilco hipsters all over the place!

I still listen to last splash and the 2002 show was brilliant.

YES, Fountains of Wayne are great. But the last time they came through town their show was dismal. I think it was a combination of their scheduling the dates thinking the album would be out, plus it was their first show on a short "pre-release" tour. They were horrible; played for 55 minutes and truly phoned it in. So we were really worried, and assuming, that the album would suck and they had lost their charmed existence.
Thank goodness we were wrong. The album is fantastic; one of the catchiest things you've heard in ages. And the show kicked ass -- every song was better than the studio versions.
Sorry you missed it, but you did see them in Wisconsin. The almost sold out crowd last night was a tiny bit weird as well.....
-
Am I a Wilco hipster if I saw them on their first tour and think Being There is their best album?

wanted to see FoW last night, but g/f and i were just too tired after travelling for 10 of the past 12 days, that we just wanted to stay at home. just got the cd while in chicago last weekend, and have only had a chance to listen to it once, but it's gonna be a good summer cd from that first listen.
looking forward to the fall though.

string cheese incident are a jam band, i saw them at constitution hall last year or the year before, you would hate them, i dont regret going but I would not go again
-
I don't know who the Greyboy AllStars are, but the String Cheese Incident is just another dumb jam band. For the life of me, I'll never understand the popularity of jam bands. So, no, you're not missing out on anything, imo.

Bob you like shite music.
So who are the greyboy allstars?
I dont recall ever hearing that name?
As for jam bands, they are cool if they are playing in a bar or something, otherwise, I have no idea why anyone would like them, perhaps Bob can help with this one?
-
The Scientist, you like shit music too.
Well I dont like most jam bands, I pretty much just like moe and Phish. I only went to the String Cheese Incident because somebody had already bought tickets and invited me along, I had never listened to their music before that.
As far as I can tell, a lot of the popularity of jam bands (other than Phish who are decent musicians IMHO) is due to the fans like being in the environment that comes with their live shows. All your hemp clothing and tie dye clothes and the drugs.
-

from allmusic.com (i thought there was a connection to Sublime, possibly one of the worst bands ever, but i most of having been thinking of another group)
An acid jazz band that focuses more on jazz than groove-oriented dance music, the Greyboy Allstars came together in 1993 when noted rare-groove DJ Greyboy (aka Andreas Stevens) met up with Karl Denson, a saxophone player who was then touring with Lenny Kravitz. The pair collaborated on two tracks for Ubiquity Records' Home Cookin' compilation, and then worked on Greyboy's 1994 solo album for Ubiquity, Freestylin'. After forming their own label, Greyboy Records, the duo gradually amassed members for a house band — guitarist Michael Andrews (formerly with the Origin), bassist Chris Stillwell, drummer Zak Najor and keyboard player Robert Walter. The Greyboy Allstars toured around the area and in 1995 released their debut album West Coast Boogaloo (with contributions from groove legend Fred Wesley). Tours throughout Europe and the States followed that year (as well as a second solo album from Greyboy himself), and the group released a concert document Live in April 1997. Two months later, the Greyboy Allstars released their second studio LP, Town Called Earth, recorded with a recent recruit, guitarist Elgin Park. Apart from Greyboy, Karl Denson and Robert Walter have each recorded solo LPs as well. — John Bush

And what makes Sublime "possibly one of the worst bands ever?"

i've heard of them before, particularily one of the members Karl Denison who plays in DC. i'm guessing they are quite popular with the jam band set....
yeah it was probably long beach allstars i was thinking of, and i detest sublime because of their uber crap hit song. makes me want to get on a water tower with a super soaker...

Funny, the weekend of the 17th is one of the weekends we're considering going up to NYC by bus. Beulah are playing in Mnhattan Friday and Brooklyn Saturday. Potentially a second and third show we could go to. But we're not groupies, unless it's Rhett Miller.
I read that Rhett recently said a fall Old 97's tour is being considered, "if our children give us permission."

That might be a double bill that we might want to check out. 10 bucks is pretty reasonable. All depends on what other shows come around at that time, since that is the busy season for concerts. Plus, it's a Sunday night, which sorta sucks for the both of us.

Markie, I've never been a Nada Surf fan but their latest album is pretty good. Not great, in my opinion but a lot of people, both in the UK and the US, are really loving them now. From what I do know of The Tyde, they should be good match, no matter what the order.
Kind of Lowgold, Longview, and a little Grandaddy sounding.
-
Thanks Jag.
allmusic gives nada surfs albums 3 stars and the tydes albums 4 stars.
-
Their hit was "popular", not really representative of all their work.
Alternative rockers Nada Surf teamed singer/guitarist Matthew Caws and bassist Daniel Lorca, longtime school friends who played together in various bands throughout their formative years. After Lorca spent a year in Spain, he returned to New York in 1988, where he and Caws eventually formed Because Because Because; by 1993 the group had mutated into Nada Surf, issuing an indie label single which won them a contract with a European label. After recording an LP, the band's original drummer quit and was replaced by ex-Fuzztone Ira Elliot; the European deal then fell through, but a demo copy of the completed album was passed to Ric Ocasek, who agreed to produce the sessions if Nada Surf wished to re-record the material. The trio soon signed to Elektra, and with Ocasek at the helm they cut their 1996 debut LP, High/Low; some of the completed European tracks also made their way onto an EP, Karmic. Nada Surf returned in 1998 with their second full-length, The Proximity Effect. The band's third album, Let Go followed in 2002; it was reissued with additional tracks on Barsuk in 2003.

Well, I only heard one recorded song. As you know, that only goes so far to define them. Nevertheless, that song had me very interested.

Trivia Question: What exactly does Isaiah 53:5 say?
Isaiah 53:5 must be a King James version.
I think it's something about and arm of God and stripes being healed. Something like that...

I don't think so after all the trouble I got into at the last one.

Your dad sure knows how to dole out the punishment...getting grounded AND a Stryper show.

Ain't it the truth.A truer statement I've never heard.Never could understand that.Low self esteem could be the cause I suppose.I know way too many who settled and are living a mediocre existence at best.Tis a shame,as they could've been much more happy had they followed their head rather than...

So Sparx, what is the word on when GBV is going to get around to their tour, they're heading to Europe pretty quickly after the album comes out.
-
Though I like both of them on record quite a bit, neither of them have ever really moved me that much with their live show...only sae the Jayhawks that one time, but have seen Lucnda numerous times dating back to the early 90's.

Look for them in mid October. They are doing a show at southgate house (Newport KY right across the river from Cinncinnatti) on the 14th.That's always a blowout as it's close to home for them and alot of fans stay at the motel right across the street(Bob and Co. have been known to show up to hoist a few as well),assuring a post show bash of massive proportions. So,anybody needing their GBV fix this summer,I'd reccommend that one for sure.

they didn't want a lot of money, so we could make the tickets $10, so I figured for a 3 band bill everyone would love me. it's all about me, you know.

i've only heard "out there in the dark" and quite enjoy it. you might also look into finding The Volebeats another Detroit band Matt Smith is in. They lean a bit towards the Alt Country side, but were doing it long before it was chic.

Hate to burst your bubble but it will be awhile before they are back this way. They are currently lining up a European tour to coincide with their next release.I'd say no sooner then late Oct. for this neck o' the woods. They are just finishing up a small jaunt through the states, closest they came was Cleveland.

The BJM forum is definitely a prety cool slice fo cyberspace.People love to antagonize Anton and he definitely never lets it pass by.As for holding your own, whatever you say..who am I to say otherwise. The man is witty as all get out, haven't seen ANYBODY get the best of him yet, including TVT.Did you see what he did in Canada last week>I posted it elsewhere under can't keep a good man down..Only downside to that forum is its mostly LA based chatter, not that it's a bad thing mind you,but they have so many cool happenings out there,it gets depressing, being 3000 mile away.Made friends with alot of good folk on there.

Oh and thanks again Sparx.

All the talk about opening bands for BJM had me thinking The Warlocks would be a cool opener.
It looks like that won't happen... They're now opening for BRMC! Just as cool.

SPARX, have you heard anything about the Sights opening for GBV when they get back from Europe.

Not a peep.I wouldn't be surprised if they had a different opener for the US shows though. All GBV chatter now revolves around the new release.Anybody who bought it get a golden ticket good for a free box set?Any comments on the packaging for the new one?

What number did you get Sparx? Mine was in the 31000s, thought it would be lower considering I preordered from Matador, no Golden Ticket for me. Love the album though, I already like it more than the last 3.

I too like it better than the last 3.Although I did really like a few songs off ID alot. Not sure about the #,mine was a promo ,I've had it awhile.31,000's is a good sign for sales, considering it was a preorder. No box set for me unfortunately.Haven't heard of anybody with the GT yet and they sure are upset on PB.Talk about your rabid fans. You'd think at least one person on their e-group would've gotten one. They did send me some cool posters and post cards though.

Hey, I just got the 'limited edition' album with the free sticker and "the chance to win a copy of the upcoming 5 CD and DVD definitive GBV box set." Couldn't figure out what 'the chance' was -- so, it's like the Willy Wonka golden ticket deal?
FYI, on the packaging -- why you asking? Did you do it?

I went to the blowoff there -- last month? They had moved to Back Bar because Velvet Lounge was closed for a day due to some kind of permitting problem. It's a tight space, and it was SO frickin' hot. I think the whole thing should move to the back stage at Black Cat.
I will say, Sat. night is WAY better. Though I know Sunday is historically a good gay dance night (but, I think that's probably due to places only giving over their venues over for 'gay nights' on Sunday rather than a good weekend night).

You're shitting me. Goddamn it. And the Long Winters, who are playing almost every Death Cab show, aren't opening for them here either.
I feel like I'm in a world of misery (she says, with about 18 other shows to see....).
Plus, the LW CMJ show is on Wednesday in New York. Can't do that either!

Elbow should be around on this side of the pond in about November. Take that with as many beers as Guy Garvey had before he told a friend of mine the other night who was hanging out with him for awhile in a pub in Manchester.

Tommy Keene -- September 6 @ iota
-
So Saturday, Sept 6th is:
Bob Mould, Fletchers, (Sat, 9/6)
Tommy Keene, Iota (Sat, 9/6)
Stellastarr & Raveonettes, BC (Sat, 9/6)
What's a gal to do? I want to see all of them (except the Raveonettes). When it rains, it pours.

I noticed one of the support bands for Clutch is called, "The Tossers". Are we really getting that low in the band name pool? What a bunch of wank....oh, never mind.

Well, quite honestly, I don't know what Guy was drinking, only what he was smoking and buying my friends. Either way, he was hanging out in a certain Manchester pub and my friends were there chatting him up and drinking and smoking away with him.

I went to the last show, and I really enjoyed it. The lead singer reminds me of a new wave Mitch Easter with his hair and apparent little lisp (he sticks his tongue out a lot).
-
Actually, he seems to play at least a couple times a year, but I could be mistaken. Not sure I'll get a crew together for the show, but I may have to go anyway. He is so marvy.
I actually drove him around in my car, interviewed him on air at my college radio station and went to his soundcheck back in Poughkeepsie in 1988. WOW. They were opening for The Radiators, which of course made no sense, and there were like 10 people there for his part of the show. After they played, the band came and sat with us until the Radiators came on (and we all left).

No, but I have thoughts on their show. BORING. And I'm not as picky as some on the board. But the two of them just stood there and sang, so out of it. The only guy who made the show worth while was this crazy guitarist, who's really just a session guy touring with them. He was a riot, standing and playing then suddenly bursting into a spastic fit.
I was completely unimpressed with them as a band. And as it is, I find their EP kinda boring to listen to, so I was counting on the show livening things up.
I'd love to see Stellastar, but I think I *have* to go to Tommy Keene.

Places That Are Gone was definitely one of the best albums (EPs) of the Eighties, and Run Now was okay, but he just never seemed to live up to his early promise.

Have you seen his show, ggw? I have a couple friends who aren't all that keen on his albums, but have really emjoyed his show.
I think Run Now was better than okay, and loved Based on Happy Times. I have bought almost all the new stuff, but rarely listen to it.

The shows I saw when he was playing with a band a couple of years ago were fantasic... Recently he had gone the solo acoustic route which I didn't checkout. His songs would work well that way though.
-
I have to agree that Tommy's live shows are completely different from his recordings. Of course, I haven't even seen him since the early to mid 80s when he was full of life and had a great band and following. Does anyone know if Ted Nicely is still playing with him? They were all very nice guys (at least to me, they were) and made for a good night for everyone.
-
Last time Keene played Iota, he played two nights; one with a full band and one solo. I saw the full band, which rocked. Don't know how the solo show was, though I wanted to go so much after the first show, but had tickets for something else I think.
I recognized at least one of the band members from the mid-80s, but can't rememember which one or who he is now.

well it's kinda hard to tour when your in jail... here is a band with a behind the music story.
I am admittely a late convert to Love, but their two disc retrospective blew my head off. Love is worshipped in the UK and not well know in the US outside of LA, because they didn't tour. The band did however influence a variety of artists. The Doors, The Rolling Stones, etc.. Check em' out you wont be disappointed.

Don't know if these have been posted yet...all three are great.
10/6: Richard Buckner @ Iota
10/7: Handsome Family w/ Jim White @ Iota
Rhett, what are your thoughts on these acts?
-
I saw Richard Buckner open for Son Volt about seven years ago. I was actually sort of bored. Perhaps he has improved live. I do have his album "Since", and it is very good.
I saw the Handsome Family open for someone atthe Black Cat. Perhaps it was the Waco Brothers, I don't quite remember. They were quirky, but I think they are better on record (Celeste has one of their albums).
Jim White...don't really care for him at all.
Some upcoming alt-country shows I will recommend (all at Iota).
Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys...nobody does the rockabilly/swing thing better than him
Robbie Fulks...even if you don't care for alt-country, I guarantee you'd enjoy this guy live....so much energy, talent, and bitingly clever between song wit...
Trailer Bride: Celeste likes them more than I do, but they play a decidedly quirky, interesting mix. And the girl singer is hot, in an offbeat sort of way.
Dale Watson: old school honky tonk, ala Dwight Yoakam, Wayne Hancock, or BR549

killing joke = big star
travis = raspberries
or better yet
killing joke = velvet underground
travis = herman's hermits

big star - Big Star - BIG STAR
BIG STAR BIG STAR BIG STAR!!
Can you tell which band I'm gonna see?
But, now I want to see Big Star far more than Killing Joke!
And what I would give to have Grohl behind the drums. Let's just say, first born, go forth and let mommy see Dave in action.
;)

I think the bands on the Black Cat Schedule are usually better than the 9:30 schedule.

I'm not familiar with Prong. Persons has been playing with KJ in Europe, but I don't know if he's the permanent touring drummer.
It doesn't look like Foo Fighters are touring in October, so who knows....maybe a Grohl guest appearance.
Nate Mendel of Foo Fighters and Sunny Day Real Estate will be playing with Fire Theft at the Black Cat sometime in October also.
-
ggw, you are correct! The One by One tour is over. I say if Grohl is at his place in Virginia, he'll be at the Killing Joke show. But, I'll bet chances are he's in L.A. being all honeymoonie.
I will, however, be there just in case.
:D

big star aren't touring i was trying to make a clever comparsion between bands and it didn't come off as planned. it should have read
killing joke is to big star
as
travis is to raspberries

Nope, you didn't confuse me, Kosmo. I understood you were only making comparisons. But chanting Big Star over and over got me really excited and I want to SEE them. But they're not touring. But if they did, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow would be there and I would faint like a 'tween. (Though Jon Auer sucks if you ask me; he dissed me at a Posies show years ago and I'll never forget it.)
-
I thought Blur did that "Woo Hoo" song?

Is there an echo in here?
-
Sparx, you had to mention Echo, didn't you. They're doing a 25th Anniversary tour, and the closest they're coming to DC is New York City. Granted, it's on a Saturday, but I have folks coming into town that weekend (which is wrecking my CMJ plans as well.)
Sat., Oct 25, Echo & the Bunnymen, N.Y.C. (I forget the venue)

They need to add some dates, that's one short tour.
-
Marilyn Manson at the 930 club? (10/25)
and you thought Justin Timberlake was bad!
-
at least I can remember a MM song 10 minutes after it has been played. He is just a modern day Gary Glitter.

Jadetree,do you really like Her Majesty?I heard so many rave reviews that I got it but was underwhelmed. It's a decent album but i don't think it will see much air time with me.Anybody else have an opinion on these guys?By the way Jadetree, what user name do you post under on PB?Are the Joggers any good?

I have not heard Her Majesty yet, comes out on Tuesday and will get it then. I love the ep and castaway and cutouts though. As far as PB goes, I am a lurker for now ;) . Don't know the Joggers.

"Year of The Cat"
It's a classic.

It's funny, isn't it? I've never seen a band backstage, but it looks like I've got a couple shows there coming up.
-
a little bit.
I'll be at school that night, otherwise might be a good one to check out.

Why don't you do those kids a favor and do a show at GMU?I'm sure with your taste, there would be an audience for it,and probably different than most others on there.I know,it's time consuming though, but alot of fun. Most college stations are in dire need of knowledgable DJ's.

I'm SO not missing Echo! I hate that I have to go to NYC, but hey, it's Echo. They're still cool :)

I thought this had already been announced. Maybe I was just overloaded with the board and email. This should be a good show!

Yes, that's where I screwed up. Just tried to edit my previous post and hit the damned quote button instead.
Now, Baltimore or DC? I may just skip the DC show and take the easy way out and go to the Baltimore show. What about you Sonic? Are you thinking of going?

That's excellent news! Too bad I just bought a ticket to the Ottobar show -arrr. Oh well. It is worth it to not have to drive 3 hrs. round trip on a week night. For those of you who have never seen either band, I highly recommend the show.
