That question is really too hard to answer. Listen to three of their new songs here:

& go see them @ the club on Friday 9/24. That's how they really shine.
I often wonder how I would have responded to them had I heard them before I actually caught their live show. On the surface - they are just not my thing. But they are such intelligent and strong songwriters & musicians that you'll be very impressed. Nothing like the image they cultivate.

I would recommend This Euphoria, which is his first major label album. He has a shitload of cds out but you cant really find any of them around here, prolly only in texas cause he is fairly popular there. But download as much of his stuff online as you can....I just recently saw him at a borders doing a solo acoustic gig and his guitar playing/singing is beautiful live.
-
What else would you recommend?
you mean garza or other stuff too?
Well buy David Garzas new box set, its mostly love songs but great nonetheless. I can also recommend My Hotel Year: the composition of ending and phrasing. They fuckin rock for a so called "emo" band. I am glad to hear these praises about the drive by truckers i gotta go pick up one of their cds asap. You recommend there newer cd or something older?
-
Buy anything with a Nelly or a Nellie in it...you can't go wrong.
-
buy me dinner instead

Shins- Chutes Too Narrow
A.C. Newman- The Slow Wonder
PJ Harvey- Uh Huh Her
Army of Me- Fake Ugly

another vote for drive by truckers. prolly one of the strongest indie acts around. i'd recommend decoration day over the dirty south though.

new gc, simple plan are coming out soon.(i mean that they are gay...) and greenday...
to be serious i must say i bought the new theSTART cd and it seems like a shitty band so you people might be interested.(www.thisisthestart.com) i just love the one song "like days" but the rest is a little to slow for me. doesn't live up to the "punkness" that was displayed when i saw them live. i still would see them live...the singer is pretty hot!!! <schwing> new sum 41 actually doesnt sound that bad, they are continueing to progress in the right direction...fuck me.

My list would look like the above except take out DBT, Hives and Black Keys.
I would add:
Of Montreal - Satanic Panic
Menomena - I Am the Fun Blame Monster (not that new but just got a wider release)
Shearwater - Winged Life
and for a change of pace,
The Microphones live album released earlier this year

I've only heard some of this so far but really like what I have heard.
So far, I think my personal album of 2004 would be (a 2003 release) "Different Stars" by Trespassers William. I love it more and more every time I listen to it and keep playing it more and more.
-
Guided by Voices-Half Smiles of the Decomposed
Ambulance Ltd-LP
The Killers-Hot Fuss
Iron and Wine-Our Endless Numbered Days
The save your money and buy the new Earlimart album which comes out next week (I think).
-
well im more of an emo girl so i would go with
melee
amber pacific
rufio
something corporate- north
coheed and cambria
-
DEFINITELY "rubber factory" by the black keys. i'd also like to put a vote in for the new libertines album. or, if you don't have it, get their first album which is better. i would recommend the new graham coxon but i don't think it's out here yet.

Phenomenal.
Buy it from his website (http://www.davidsylvian.com/). It's much cheaper from there than it is elsewhere.

I adore David Sylvian. When I got my first full-time job, I walked across the street to a record store and they had this incredible box set -- Weather Box -- it was $80, which was INSANE at the time, but I bought it.
That cover art doesn't look like it could be him...wow. This is the David Sylvian I remember:

I'd say Ash - Meltdown (one of the best hard rock/power pop albums of the last few months IMHO). Also another vote for Dandy Warhols - Welcome to the Monkey House (they get better and better with each album), and Muse - Absolution if you don't mind indulging in some art-rock pretention (and who doesn't!). I've heard the new Hives is pretty good, but I still have to snag it myself.
-
I'd like to throw in a second for Sondre Lerche. Faces Down is quite good, and Two Way Monologue is about as close to a perfect pop ("pop" in the traditional sense) album as you can get.

probably my single most dissapointing CD purchase this year

Really? I bought this in Denver and I haven't played it since then. Ouch. Hurts my ears. All right, I'll give it a whirl today. I bought it for the same price as his website, and was really kicking myself for my spend.

Hurts your ears? He's been really mellow & beautiful in the past...is this a departure, I wonder?

It's mellow...and wandering..and his voice is pained and drains so I can barely hear him. So, yeah, it hurts. A friend was with me when I played it and we both said "wtf?". But I'll listen again.

If you're going to buy a really cool album make it this one ;)
