Title: Visiting Baltimore
Post by: yr covers blown on June 12, 2006, 01:13:00 pm
I will be in town for the Belle and Sebastian show.  I will only be in Baltimore for the night and need to kill time from when the show ends to when I catch my flight. So from, like Midnight to 7am.  I'm just looking for a place to grab a drink and maybe see a band.  I'm from Austin and if anyone is familiar with that area, I'm looking for an Emo's type atmosphere.  If you could please help me out I would be eternally greatful!

Will you have transportation?  Baltimore, decent places to hang out, and merriweather would require a car to get to and from.

if you're up for driving to DC after the show (probably 45 mins or so), there's a good britpop party at Black Cat

The Ottobar is decent.  Closest to Emo's as stated earlier.
Other than that,  Sonar (http://www.sonar.us) has a decent lounge area, for bands, try  The Talking Head (http://www.talkingheadclub.com) or  The Side Bar (http://www.sidebartavern.com)

For decent places to hang out or kill time at, try  The Brewer's Art (http://www.belgianbeer.com/) ,  The Sound Garden (http://www.cdjoint.com/) , or  The Club Charles (http://baltimore.citysearch.com/profile/4959136/baltimore_md/club_charles.html)

Hands down, the best place in B'more is Friends on Aliceanna street in Fells Point.  Great food, good beer, fantastic jukebox.

If you don't feel like driving too far, and want to stay in columbia, Sushi Sono by the "lake" has terrific sushi.

Why would anyone even want to do touristy things here?  Baltimore is teh suck.  I'd leave if I only could.

Things must be really bad in Texas if they're coming here for kicks.  Canada too!

Same here. This hole in Hell gets worse every year with a few minor improvements for some to point out as highlights.

Have you noticed that the only ones who tend to like Baltimore are a few people who don't live here? Accept for Sonick who has some weird, morbid fascination with the place since he left Canada. Wonder if he's on the mayor's payroll?

Welcome to Baltimore, hon. Hope you brought your Texas street smarts with you because you are in Dodge City East now.

I want to go to Austin to see The Black Angels, Experimental Aircraft, My Education, She, Sir and many other very cool bands.

Everyone hates the town they live in.  I love living in Austin most of the time, but that's because I moved here for college in 1999 from a shitty border town.  Sometimes the whole clique-ish everyone knows everyone bullshit gets to me and I want to leave.  Hello trip to MD.  Again, thanks for all the feedback.

its not really that i have a fascination with baltimore, its just i cannot see why some people have this horrible opinion of it.  I mean, from the sounds of you and dupek and some others, when you go to Baltimore you step on dirty needles as bullets go whizzing by your head!
I have lived here for 7 years and the only negative experiences i have are the same ones i had while living 2 years in Boston, and 1 /12 in Manhattan.

i find it pretty sad that people live somewhere they hate. if i thought i was stuck in a town, i would certainly feel terrible about it.

sounds more like you are too lazy to leave than that you just cant.

I think that Fells Point has lost its tourist appeal to Power Plant Live...
I don't see too many "tourists" strolling into Red Star, Trixies, Fletcher's, The Blarney Stone, or Reptillain Records....Unless by tourists, you mean people from Catonsville, then I am guilty of said charges.

I work with two people who choose to live in Baltimore and commute to DC. Both have PHD's, both probably make at least 100K, and both prefer Baltimore.

Listen, I grew up in Baltimore and know it well unlike those who didn't get to know Baltimore until the last 10 years or so. It is not the same city that it once was by any means. A few places have gotten better but, as a whole, the place has gotten so much worse, mostly because of vastly increased crime and political corruption.

For privacy reasons, I will not write about some of the things that I know of that would piss anyone off that have gone on just in City Hall alone that affect the entire city. I know, or have known, lots of people who work/ed there and have heard some horrible tales of insider corruption. BTW, most of these people were in middle or upper level management positions. Not just some courier or lower level employee.

Also Sonick, you may have gotten by unscathed but I have had more than my share of negative experiences here, mostly all in the past 10 years. Worse yet, I've known way too many people who have had bad experiences that were even worse than mine, including death. One of my long time friends was murdered in Bolton Hill by a couple teenagers in broad daylight during a robbery. This kind of stuff has greatly increased in the past decade or so for reasons I won't elaborate on now. It's for many more reasons than just drugs.

Most of my personal experiences, though not all, were within the public school system. Now, you might say something like, "Yeah, but that's different. Everyone knows how bad the schools are." But the thing is, those schools are part of the city and I was usually in the very worst of them. They are real and they are horrendous and those kids who the system allows to get away with the worst behavior you can imagine are taking it right out to the streets and the cops aren't allowed to stop them either. So, consider yourself lucky so far and continue to take your street smarts with you. And make sure you watch out for your girlfriend and not be so cavelier about how tough and street smart she might be because a bullet can stop all that thinking in an instant. BTW, dodging bullets was sometimes par for the course on a typical trip to and from school...or even just getting through the school day.

Finally, for the record, I don't live in Baltimore City proper. I'm north of there in a nice neighborhood maybe akin to what Reston, Chantilly or Woodbridge would be to DC. I love my apartment, have a fantastic and peaceful view and lots of room for much, much less than what I'd pay in any of those areas. So, unless I can find a worthwhile job in the DC area that would allow me to afford something similiar, I'm not that quick to move. The downside is that I rarely go out anywhere in the Baltimore area since most of the places I prefer are in DC. One trade off for the other.

I didn't grow up in Baltimore, but I did live the biggest chunk of my life in small town MD.  Now I am a suburban Baltimoron.

Maryland, while not the worst of states, is certaintly no garden spot.   Most foreigners seems to like it somewhat, though.  So what do I know?  My son is growing up in Baltimore.  He seems to love it. He goes downtown nearly every day.  Go figure.

Myself, I much prefer the upper Great Lakes area over most of the rest of America.  I don't like city life, but if I had to choose one I'd pick Green Bay.  I like cheese.

Fine.  Stay in your house.  Don't go out.  Then, I can enjoy a beer in my favorite bar in BALTIMORE without having to hear whiners like you complain about a fun city.

And for the record, I have more friends who've had problems in DC than in Baltimore.  So, I guess you should just move to South Dakota.

So sad. I knew Mike and he was a super nice guy. We worked at summer camp together. The violence just never ever seems to end. I don't understand. I know poverty, lack of resources and a million other things make desperate people do desperate things. But everyone - most everyone - has a mother. Should know basic right from wrong. Should at least value and respect life. I find it hard to believe that every crime is committed by someone who never had a single chance or love from a parent. How did we get so far off the rails and why and how do we get back on? My heart aches for Mike. For his family. For our mutual friends that are grieving for him. And for all those affected by senseless violence, including myself, because my father was also killed by a completely senseless and random act of theft and murder. I feel overwhelming sadness.

Any place in Baltimore is safe as long as you ingratiate yourself to the locals. Look at your surroundings and point out similarities to the plot of The Wire. They love that. Bonus points if you lecture them on the challenges their school system faces in poverty stricken neighborhoods.

It only takes one incident to sour anybody on a certain place. I used to live in the "nuclear free zone" lovey-dovey hippie town of Takoma Park, Maryland. One day as I was walking home from the train station, two teenaged guys jumped me from behind and started pummeling me. I quickly gave my wallet to one of the guys. The other guy, not realizing his buddy had taken off with my wallet, continued kicking me in the head and demanding my wallet.

The silver lining of the story is that it was the Xmas season and they were probably able to split the $20 I had in my wallet and get their baby-mamas some nice stocking stuffers.

I dirve through a lot of Baltimore to go to the Kennedy Krieger Center and I have to say I have never seen anything as bad...its like Mad Max or some movie after a nuclear holocaust.. I'm guessing many people who live in Baltimore never go into these areas.. these areas are obviously the high crime areas....

So Baltimore/DC gets screwed out of hosting 2026 World Cup.  Fuck those Euro-trash FIFA assholes.

DC doesn’t have a big enough stadium so it really came down to Baltimore being passed up in favor of other US cities but yeah it’s a bummer.

An Emo's type atmosphere...probably at the 8x10, though without the good music...

If you could please help me out I would be eternally greatful!

huh?  fed ex field can hold 82k, which gives it the second-highest capacity of the NFL.  you need to reach for the college stadiums, like the Big House, if you wanna go really big... but i didn't see them list any college venues, looks like its all pro football stadiums.

EDIT: WaPo writes (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/06/16/2026-world-cup-host-cities/) "Baltimore and Washington merged their bids to improve the region’s chances, but because of FIFA’s growing concerns about FedEx Field in Landover, Md., the matches were to be staged at M&T Bank Stadium." i wonder what those "concerns" are?  my guess: it's Snyder.

Exactly

Also Baltimore doesn’t have an MLS team.

I think it’s hard to argue with most of the cities picked.

There was some glorified exhibition match at the Big House with whatever team had Cristiano Ronaldo and the soccer losers said the field was oddly sized or positioned or something that made it suboptimal.

I think the Rose Bowl was proposed but didn’t make this final cut in favor of Sofi Stadium.

This is FIFA. Dan Snyder is a choirboy compared to these uber corrupt freaks.

FedEx Field's problem is that it's a total dump and I'm sure that railing collapsing during the Eagles-WFT game at the end of 2021 sealed the deal. Of course, decrepit stadiums aside, nobody knows how World Cup bids truly work, unless it is really is cities offering $X to FIFA and trying to recoup the money.

The Rose Bowl was never offered, except for maybe practice. The NFL hasn't had a Super Bowl there in 30 years, why would FIFA play there instead of SoFi Stadium?

FedEX is a dump AND pulled out

It wouldn’t have deserved to get picked

FIFA would be foolish to mess around with the US. I mean didn’t our Department of Justice take down their former leadership?

is this why you see a headline like this

FIFA snubs Washington D.C (https://sports.yahoo.com/world-cup-host-cities-2026-214301806.html)

The Rose Bowl was 100% on the finalists list up until today when it was not selected. Read literally any article on this subject, bro.

https://www.espn.com/soccer/fifa-world-cup/story/4686699/world-cup-2026-host-cities-revealedwith-11-venues-in-us3-in-mexico-and-2-in-canada   read paragraph 4.

The Super Bowl has been exclusively hosted at NFL stadiums during your suggested 30-year window, so the Rose Bowl was not eligible for a Super Bowl. This is sort of like pointing out Nationals Park has hosted no Super Bowls, so how could we expect them to merit a Green Day and Weezer co-headline date.

It WAS the site of the 199x World Cup Final the last time the US hosted.

I will tolerate none of this Rose Bowl slander.

They didn’t snub DC, they snubbed Baltimore which doesn’t have an MLS team

They went with cities that support soccer like Seattle or Atlanta which average 50,000 attendance per game

I think they got it right

seattle's #1 team, by far and away, is the seahawks (nlf).  but second place is a definite toss-up between the mariners (mlb) and the sounders (mls).  i get the impression that there are more baseball fans in numbers, but soccer fans are way more passionate.  in my little slice of exurbia there are at least two "sounders bars" but i can't think of a single "mariners bar."

one the one hand, giving the WC games to established markets like seattle or LA is a reward for loyalty, cementing the market, etc.  but on the other hand, those games are going to sell out - why not expand to new markets like baltimore?

anyhoo, looks like seattle is only getting round-robin games, no knockouts.  i'll be attending as many games as i can get tickets to.  maybe england will play here and i can attract a certain san fransiscan up this way...

I believe the MLS grew out of the 1994 World Cup.

MLS is a pretty big league now! It ain’t just ten markets….Teams in some cases drawing 50,000 is a big deal even if it ain’t NFL numbers! Did you think the NFL only has 8 or 9 home games per year?

It makes sense to reward cities that care about soccer and - in the main-have world class infrastructure.
I wish Columbus had the large stadium to be rewarded.

Baltimore? Pfft

MLS is a Ponzi scheme. It has “more than 10 teams” because it’s chief revenue is the initiation fee for new teams. It’s Amway masquerading as a sports league.

Don't take my word for it. Google “mls Ponzi scheme” and go look at the number of academics who call it that. Like 4 of 27 teams (or whatever the count is now) are profitable without league dispersements of new franchise fees. The TV revenue is negligible and attendance sucks outside of like 5 cities.

When they run out of cities to expand to to generate more “new franchise fees,” it’s over. It’s a Ponzi scheme.

MLS has flaws but it’s lasted more than two decades. I think it’s a success by any measure. Is it the Premier League? No but none are other than the Premier.

Attendance is actually quite good. MLS average attendance per game is about the same as baseball or basketball.

The product on the field is vastly improved with lots of talented South American players making the first jump to MLS from say Argentina.

MLS stadiums used to be atrocious but have been upgraded. See DC for example.

When I read that some teams average attendance of 50,000 I find it remarkable. These numbers compare favorably with the most successful teams in Europe or South America that have been around over a hundred years.

The 2026 World Cup will be another boost to MLS as will be Messi arriving about 2023-24.
