a great record, shame i didn't shell out the sawbucks to see the band live... the live bonus disc is a winner as well. hopefully it's not a one shot deal for this group, as i prefer joe when he's writing pop songs verses his attempts at being serious.

The new music on Vol.4 was a mix of "the fairly good" and "the mostly forgettable." Thugz R Us is the tune that best harks back to the olde Joe, IMHO.

what can I say - I like em and like I said I was surprised at how much I liked it last night after not listening to it for a while

Brennser, what do you find lacking in the Wilco live show, I was slightly turned off by their last show here due to the larger venue and what I saw as sonic youth envy, but the other times I have seen them were great

Brennser, what do you find lacking in the Wilco live show
well I've seen them maybe 6/7 times live (I didn't got to the Const Hall show - in general once tix go above $25 I have a hard time justifying it) and I think their live shows just used to be a lot more 'fun' - part of it is obviously because YHF is somewhat more slower paced and 'experimental' and the fiddling around with computers but at their last 9.30 club show I was almost bored - even the crowds seem to be different now that they are an 'important' band

I did not see their last two nights at the 9:30, was out of the country, but Rhett has said their live show is worse now as well.

Regarding Wilco:
When I want my Tweedy fix, I seem to reach for one of the first three Wilco albums, Uncle Tupelo, or even the first Golden Smog album before I reach for YHF. Also, live I liked Wilco better when Bennett was in the band.

No. Is it good? Would you recommend Vol 1 or Vol 2?
I picked up the British box at DCCD -- $12.00 seemed fair for a 3-cd set. the only other one they had was the "Lover's Reggae."
The Roots and Rude-Boy sets look alright.

I think vol. 1 holds a slight edge (although I don't actually own vol. 2)...but either way, it's hard to go wrong with 50 tracks. Flashing Echo (Trojan Dub '70-'80) is good, too.

hmmm... dccd had a decent selection of new vinyl that at 25% or more off would be worth checking out. maybe they sold the lot to another dealer before the sell off began.

No, they still had some decent vinyl. I assumed that "CDs" meant "CDs" only. I probably should have asked. I would have picked up a few albums if they were 25% off.

I looked at vinyl tonight at DCCD but did not end up buying any, so not sure if it was on sale as well or not. It is weird though, last Wednesday when I went and the sale had started, they had none of the new Joe Strummer cds, but I was able to get 1 tonight, and they had several. So they must have got a shipment in. I heard the woman working tonight say they would probably be open another week or week and a half. The shelves are emptying quickly, but not so much the vinyl. Still lots of dashboard confessional and strokes vinyl, I know you were all wondering.

He's always been nice to me.As for how he treats others,not really any of my business.He's one helluva musician and songwriter,that's for sure.

Watching him yell and make snide comments to members of the band onstage made me lose a lot of respect for him. They also played a horrendous set. I can see how one bad show can ruin someone's interest and respect in a person/band.

I guess that you were at the Black Cat show?When he's liquored up it can definitely be a train wreck,so I do see what your saying.However,he's not forcing anybody to tour with him.When they're on though,one of the best live acts I've ever witnessed.

If you really like the music i'd give em another shot,although it could end up a carbon copy,you just never know.At least they never charge much.Maybe a month with Uncle Bob will put him in better spirits.On 2nd thought,it could make things worse.Sorry ot hear you had a bad experience with them,but they can be great,the show they did a year or so ago at the Metro Cafe was spot on.As was the rock n roll hall of fame show,something i never expected for such a sterile environment.

Ah, I like the Buffseeds, especially the song Casino. They've been around for a couple years now but haven't made very many waves even in Manchester let alone the US. I think because their body of work isn't as rich as it could be with the song Casino being it's strong point.

I think that Casino would be the most immediate song on the album, but for me, Sparkle Me is a slightly stronger song. After those two songs, things kinda settle down but "The Picture Show" definitely does leave an impression if only for the vocals.

I haven't heard, "I Am" yet but I'm gathering from the reviews I've read about it, it that it's not much different than her previous works. Sometimes she has something to say, which makes the stripped down production interesting, then other times it's just nonsense. Definitely not for everyone.

As for Mutabaruka, Blakk wi Blak isn't the best. It does have The People's Court, which makes it worth the $2.99 I paid. But that song is also available on The Ultimate Collection, which is a good album. Check It is also good. The Mystery Unfolds is far and away the best album (in my opinion). I'm still looking for a copy of Muta in Dub.

i concur, saw them on the different class tour and there are few better front men than jarvis. the band really lost a critical element when russell thier violin player left the group. of course it didn't help their us popularity when they played only a handful of us dates to promote "this is hardcore" one of them being the tibetian freedom concert.

I've always known them as a late 70s Punk band. Of course, you can refine their category as a number of different classifications. A lot of the very early Punk bands did get their roots from Garage or 60s Mod or Psychedelic music, without all of the refinement. Also, a lot of very updated British Folk music without the fancy old instruments.

Here's the review for the cd from the January 2004 Mojo....
First time on CD for the only ten tracks recorded by Shane MacGowan and Shanne Bradley's late '70s punkabilly barnstormers, plus two unreleased.
Any band calling themselves The Nipple Erectors were hardly looking for national airplay, and yet both sides of their 1978 debut single, King Of The Bop/Nervous Wreck, were some of the most joyous noises on John Peel's show that year. According to the tabloids, hacks, punks and Teds, were only supposed to beat each other up down the King's Road, but this mob wore drape jackets and owed as much to the likes of Gene Vincent as they did the Pistols. Shortening the name to the Nips, they managed two more singles, including the fine Louie Louie - influenced Gabrielle, before splitting - Bradley to The Men They Couldn't Hang, and MacGowan to a band called Pogue Mahone. The authentic sound of the Roxy generation and not a Situationist in sight.

It's fantastic. Live/Acoustic with some strings. Very nice.
Beware of getting this from Amazon though. They have 2 entries for "Cool Blue Halo". One is out of print (which is correct). The other seems to actually reference a completely different CD by someone named Robert Moore, despite the fact that the pic and track listing is from the Richard Barone disc.

I think the Whigs comparison may have been what caused me to initially pick it up, but I don't really hear it. I'm not sure if I've ever heard another band that I thought sounded much like the Whigs. If anything, there are Constantines songs that sound like what you'd imagine Springsteen would have sounded like if he had chosen a punk rock profession.

Ever heard of garage doo-wop? You have now. "Poppy" pulls together the most disparate strains of TV on the Radio's music, combining old-fashioned finger-snaps and barbershop basslines with machine-press drums and industrial-grade guitars that soar upon grit-streaked wings. Instrumentalist/producer David Andrew Sitek has traded the Massive Attack-like druggy clarity of the band's Young Liars EP for a new adventure in lo-fi-- granted, it's territory he's well familiar with, having got his start producing Yeah Yeah Yeahs EPs.
Young Liars was gorgeous and bulletproof, and most of Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes is consciously coarse and vulnerable. Further playing against their aces, Tunde Adebimpe's vocal presence has been reduced as he shares the mic with Kyp Malone, whose voice isn't half as authoritative, but for better or worse that's the point: a sort of daring frailty is intrinsic to the record. Does it work? On "Poppy", absolutely. An easy confidence carries the song as the guitar and drums establish themselves, disappear shy of the halfway point in a shift that hits like a time-warp, then usher in the song's climax by rejoining the mix piece-by-piece. The stroke of grace, though, is still Adebimpe's voice, both in his emotive crooning and his effortlessly catchy vocal bassline. When I walk through the industrial district, the tension wires hum it. TV On The Radio's debut LP, Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes, is scheduled to come out March 9th on Touch & Go. That date could theoretically move up, however, as the album has already been leaked to the Internet. The album contains nine tracks-- eight new songs and a slightly-shortened version of "Staring at the Sun" (from the band's Young Liars EP, which placed at #28 on our year-end list despite having only 25 minutes of music on it). Tracklist:

In the wake of the band's LP being leaked, we talked to TV On The Radio multi-instrumentalist and producer David Andrew Sitek about their first full record.
Pitchfork: At first we weren't sure if what leaked was the finished version of the album because the production was so different from that of Young Liars.
Sitek: The dry production was an active choice of ours (seeing as how we already covered the "soupy" territory on the EP). The soup still exists with some songs on the record, but for the most part, when we added Kyp's voice to the equation... we wanted the listener to be able to hear the combination of Kyp & Tunde, and hear the lyrics... it is a more vulnerable sound that we thought would be another way to hear us... you could break the songs apart easier and see them as they are written. This way we have the freedom to use fidelity as another influence/medium and it sets the stage for another turn for us later. From a production standpoint, I am equally as fascinated by the space around the music as I am the content.
Pitchfork: How did "Staring at the Sun" end up on the album?
Sitek: We decided to put "Staring at the Sun" on the LP because we think the song is kind of a midway point from where we were and where we were going, and we really want it to be heard and since we are sending out as many promos for this album as we sold of the EP, we thought it could get us (and Katrina [Ford]'s) bad ass voice to more people.
Pitchfork: The guest performances and the production of Young Liars (you call it "soupy," we called it "hyper-real") were two of its most praised facets. What's it like making a record without either of those elements? Are you more invested in the success or failure of the record now that it's just you guys?
Sitek: As far as standing by the success or failure of the record, I think it is pretty safe to say that none of us really expected to reach as many people as we have with the EP, and if we were to "fail" by most standards it would probably put us right where we would have expected the EP to put us in the first place. We "stand" by our position of making music we are interested in, no matter what the critical fallout might be. And we will inevitably have more friends/fidelities/mixups on future recordings... we were really concentrating on Kyp and Tunde and me on this record, and how to fit such different sounds together without "muddying" it up... I think we succeeded in bring the sound "as it was" to the LP.

This album is the first I've ever heard by Califone so I can't really compare it to previous works. At it's very basic, you could say it's a folk rock album with lots of random noises thrown in. Insound thinks it's blues but I don't agree.

In his liner notes, Spaghetti trashes the whole idea of solo records, especially those that consist solely of covers. But in typical fashion, that doesn't stop him from doing his own. Sauce features quick and easy, largely acoustic versions of outlaw country faves from Kris Kristofferson ("Best of all Possible Worlds") and Willie Nelson (the mirthful and giddy "Gotta Get Drunk"). There's also a run through "Cocaine Blues," but his isn't underpinned with terror like Johnny Cash's. Instead, Spaghetti cranks it out steely and fast, like it was the last song of the middle set in a Tuesday night dive bar gig. He gets a tad serious ?? or at least heartfelt ?? with Steve Earle's "I Don't Want to Lose You Yet," but it's back to a bleary-eyed cross of honky tonkin' and low culture slummin' for "Peace in the Valley" (originally by A3): Sauce isn't country, and it doesn't rock like his day job. But from end to end, it drips with the same dastardly good-time juice that defines the best Supersuckers stuff."

It's pretty good. You can hear some rust around the edges (especially from Nico, who misses some cues and has a coughing fit towards the end of Janitor of Lunacy). I find her part to be the weakest of the three, because her songs just seem to drag, but the VU songs she sings are right on.
Cale's section is good, most surprisingly so for me since I'm not familiar with much of his post Velvets output. I wouldn't call this essential by any means, but it's a pretty nice disk to have.
Hearing some of the songs without the clouds of noise (particularly Black Angels Death Song, which is actually a prettier and scarier song than the album version, and All Tomorrow's Parties) is the biggest treat, I'd say.
Apparently, it's a limited edition version (having two extra practice songs - Pale Blue Eyes and Candy Says, both of which pretty much sound like practice versions, complete with them giving instructions to each other on how to play them), and supposedly the last two won't be on future versions. Don't know if that's true or not, though. I would recommend it, but wouldn't give it to someone not familiar with the VU.

There's good variety on the album ("variety" meaning speed-metal; death-metal; metal-core; dark-metal). The Lemmy track is the standout.

Yes, the Lemmy track is the one that stands out. Basically, he does versions of every different type of metal on this album with a dozen metal legends. I preferred his QOTSA collaboration.

The Probot album is definitely a novelty thing -- but it's all good. I don't know that I would say "every different type of metal." There's no hair metal, no nu-metal, no Scorps-esque arena metal tuneage. Definitely a variety of early-mid '80s sounding hard metal. Think Dark Angel, early Flotsam & Jetsam, maybe even a hint of Cliff Burton-era Metallica. Plus some good punk/metal fusion stuff (COC, DRI).
QOTSA is just a great album all around.

hear hear on the klf... at least they had the decency to change the name of the group before they released the same song over and over, unlike sigue sigue sputnik. i'll bet brennser would like to hear the klf record i own which features top of the pops and julie andrews singing. it's a really odd cd too, you can hear that sound a needle makes at the beginning of the record on two tracks. :D

These are both good. If you like the Dirt Floor vibe, they are similar. Just CW with the wailing guitar and a little foot stomp action.
War Crime Blues contains a couple of interesting covers - Lou Reed & The Clash.
And Weed is a treat for any fan. I can't think of another artist that has released a new record consisting solely of re-interpretations of their own tunes - not live - not a best of. Some of these are barely recognizable.

His show was very good last night. His voice was in top shape &, if possible, he has become an even better guitar player. At times it is awesome to witness. My favorite time seeing him is still Fletchers for the Dirt Floor tour, but this is a close 2nd.
Interestingly, the show was sold out. This during a period that he's kept a low profile. [that Fletchers show only had 50-100 people even though he had an acclaimed record out]
It was good to see.

I'd definitely say it's the strongest release of theirs that I've heard. That being said, I'm really only familiar with Each One Teach One, seeing them at Coney Island this summer, and the Atheists, Reconsider split.
That being said, it hasn't left my CD player for much since I got it about a week ago. I had heard a lot of talk about the last track, Changes in the City, before I picked it up, and it's justified, in my opinion. It's just as epic as people make it out to be.

This is the first record that XM Radio encouraged me buy. When I heard the snippet on Xm, I thought they sounded like DBT. So, of course I had to get it. I was wrong. I hear more Son Volt.
Speaking of DBT...I just found some good archives of some recent KEXP in-studios featuring a couple of their new songs.

Yeah, Assassins is one of the hardest tracks I've ever heard. It took me a while to appreciate them, but I had a friend that kept playing them and it finally hit, I guess.
GGW, as for Siren, I would say it's fairly different. Much more polished and full sounding, in my opinion. That being said, I don't think that the CD would change your mind a whole lot.

We saw them when we they were touring on their previous cd. I've heard the new one is slower and more downbeat. I think we liked them better live on their faster, more rollicking numbers. They had a banjo player who was really cool.
Heard those DBT songs a little while ago, forgot to post about it. I like the two Cooley songs and the Patterson song. Not crazy about the slow song by the young lad.

Other people feel differently about him though - Check out what No Depression wrote in their latest covering a DBT concert:
Isbell was the most valuable player of the evening. Playing a hollowbody Gretsch, he ripped out leads and fills, played slide guitar, and caused many in the audience to wonder if they were seeing the next Eric Clapton, Duane Allman or Eddie Van Halen. He's going to be famous, big-time famous, it's just a matter of time.

I think Isbell's songs on Decoration Day are definitely among the best.
As for the bass player -- judging from the Black Cat show and the records, he wasn't exactly a virtuoso. He fit in just fine with the band and the sound, but he looked to be playing nothing but simple riffs.

My significant other HATES the idea of a female in the band (she is a woman by the way). Weird. I thought she'd love the representation. She just doesn't think that a women will fit in with her image of the band and their sound.
When we saw them in Austin last year, she actually commented that she thought something was wrong with Earl (the old bassist). She thought he seemed resentful of the attention and acclaim that the new kid was getting. She even tracked him down after the show - gave him a hug & told him he was great.
Turns out she may have been right. I also remember offering to buy him a drink at a show over the summer & he replied "that he was on the wagon." You're gonna have a tough time being sober and in that band.
I really don't care either way. The band is selling it as an influx of additional talent. She's a multi-instrumentalist & another songwriter. You can see her photo on that KEXP link above. If she's as good as they're saying - that band's got a glut of talent...and as Patterson Hood sez - Somethings Gotta Give Pretty Soon.

I agree. He was a relatively new addition anyway.
If you look back at their earlier records, he was producing not playing. He stepped in at times and maybe just became a semi- permanent replacement.
He was probably fine as they were toiling away in obscurity, but fame's a knocking. The question though is - does every member of your band need to be an incredible songwriter, singer or musician? At what point does this become disruptive instead of creative?

OK so my expectations were a little unrealistic (waiting on best album of all time) but it's very good all the same. Not *quite* what the EP promised, though (there's nothing quite like "Blind"...Plus borrowing some guitar and drums from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was nice)

The best thing I've heard since that TV on the Radio EP...it's sort of like the strangest bits of Modest Mouse and the Meat Puppets mixed together, but even better and weirder than that. And Albini produced it, so it sounds just incredible.

Their latest album was produced by Southern Culture on the Skids frontman Rick Miller.
Did see the singer cuddling up to another chick at the Bloodshot CMJ barbeque while another band was playing. Was sorta sexy...

Von Bondies - Pawn Shoppe Heart (I am surprised how much I like this one, far better than the first in my opinion)
TV on the Radio - Desparate Youth.... (not as good as the EP, will need some time with it)
Deerhoof - Milk Man (not any more accessible than the previous ones, the title track is pretty cool, won't listen very often though)
+/- - You Are Here (really like about 7 of the 11 tracks)
Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans (not as good as Michigan, I did not listen too closely, but it seemed like there were a few too many Jesus references for my liking)

Well, Toots is never bad.
But, it's just what you would expect -- kind of uneven. The somgs are great of course, and some of the remakes are excellent (The Roots and Bootsy Collins on Funky Kingston for example), but others are forgettable. All in all, the good outweighs the bad and the album is good for a completist but it's not essential (although hearing Willie Nelson sing on Still is Still Moving to Me almost makes it essential).

Panda Park is an undeniably brilliant record that finds an uncompromising, always striving-to-evolve band totally on top of its game. To Everybody may have hinted at the direction the 90 Day Men would take with Panda Park, but it still comes as a shock ?? the group has gone from being confounding post-hardcore to defining what could be called post-piano pop. They mash Warm Jets-era Eno, Elton John, Bowie, T. Rex, Wendy, ELO, and the entire history of Chicago's experimental rock into a caterwauling, spaced-out collection of catchy insanity. Is this the first hardcore pop album? It's certainly challenging and unforgiving on tracks like the piercing and awkward "Chronological Disorder" and there's a weirdness that suggests something is impending. But there's no slick, Interpol gloom and doom or '80s keyboard new wave ?? which would have been the easiest approach. On the contrary Panda Park is uplifting, mesmerizing, glittery, and unapologetically psychedelic while sounding rooted in both '70s prog and skewed latter-day punk rock. The 90 Day Men have landed with an album that acknowledges their forebears while owing them nothing ?? and they may be the most relentlessly original band of the year. Panda Park is like Revolver from a group raised on Fugazi ?? God help listeners when they release their Sgt. Pepper.

Now I'd def go see the reunited JP. Would be great fun. I was coerced into seeing AC/DC a few years ago & it turned out to be hysterically fun. Hopefully that's what a Darkness show will be like.

I don't have the Darkness disc, and I listened to Queen's Greatest Hits last night, so I figured the Priest would be the next best thing.

If you must do a sit-down theater-style show, the Byham Theater in Pittsburgh is tough to beat...it's just a kick ass venue.

I'm a pretty casual Damien Rice fan, but I think there are others on here that feel passionately about the quality of his live shows.
He had the full band with him, but they did the unplugged thing. He said that they'll make a last minute decision to play like that every couple weeks & that since the audience was sitting & it was Easter Sunday that it seemed appropriate.
He's a supremely talented singer & then you throw in the bonus near operatic vocals of Lisa Hannigan + the cello & it's powerful stuff...even 'unplugged'
A highlight for me was a little seque into "Hallelujah" Jeff Buckley style to close the main set.
A very enjoyable Sunday evening...even considering the sangria headache I'm nursing.

Except for very rare occasions/artists - I much prefer standing. Sitting saps energy from the crowd which unquestionably the bands feed off. I'm sure you've seen shows in venues where seats diminished the experience. Steve Earle comes to mind immediately.

That's a good analogy - & I'd still say yes - standing equals more energy.
I know though that we could get into a chicken or the egg type argument about whether the band(teams) performance actually induces the crowd into an energetic and appreciative standing position.
I think it's what them biologists call a symbiotic relationship! :D

absolutely - not saying the sports team would perform better BUT being at a sporting event with terracing, as opposed to all seated generates a much better atmosphere, often for the simple reason that you can fit more people in
a standing crowd has significantly more energy than a seated crowd

Five or six years ago, a friend in Philly introduced me to a local band called Marah. Their first album had just come out, on an indie label, and it sounded great to me, like the Pogues reimagined by the E Street Band, full of fire and tunes, and soul and banjos.
Their next album will be spectacular, and they??ll sell out Madison Square Garden, and you??ll all be boasting that you read a column by a guy who saw them in the Fiddler??s Elbow. Anyway, the two shows I saw that week were spectacular, as good as anything, I??ve seen with the possible exception of the Clash in ??79, Prince in ??85 and Springsteen on the River tour.

Whoops, sorry, I was referring to the real Pollard, Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices and Fading Captain fame.... On their website in the links section it says, "Seachange, a GREAT new band. One of Bob's faves. Their debut full length is out on Matador in April. They'll be opening for GBV in April. Check out their site."

If you like Norah Jones though think she's a bit overproduced, you'll like this:
Escondida is the actual studio debut by Texas-born singer/songwriter Jolie Holland. While critics and music fans alike lauded Catalpa as her "first" album, it was never actually intended for release. Anti issued it after the volume of reviews reached fever pitch and Holland could no longer keep up with requests for it. As such, Escondida is a very different recording. Not as drenched in Gothic southern images and architectures, Escondida offers an even more evocative portrait of Holland as an American traditionalist who uses history as the framework for her new direction; she is not an Americana songwriter. One need go no further than "Sascha," the opener, for evidence. In beautiful early swing vernacular, complete with self-played Piedmont style guitaristry, Dave Mihaly's whispering snare brushes, and Ara Anderson's trumpet loping languidly in the background, Holland offers a love song as humid as a summer night full of stars and quiet front porches. It's startling because it is at once so classic and yet so wonderfully foreign. Her voice evoking Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith without imitating either, and her words coming from the heart of her own 21st century. Contrast this with "Black Stars," which follows it. Featuring only guitars and cymbals, it's closer in feel to the material on Catalpa, yet Holland's voice comes from the land of the ghosts; where the spirits of jazz singers and blues singers jointly crooned in the streets of Old New Orleans. Likewise, Ma Rainey might have sung the blues line in "Old Fashion Morphine" if she and Tampa Red had been accompanied by Sidney Bechet and Kid Ory in a late-night swing session. Gospel, folk, hints of early country music, and swing lie down together and kiss, languidly caressing one another in this blend of organic, sultry, sexy American blues. yeah I have, and I agree with you, I just thought everything about Mclusky Do Dallas was done so well, nothing is better on this one, the songs are not as catchy and the sound is not as clear

Drill a Hole in the Substrate & Tell Me What You See
I like it a lot after 2 listens. As with most Jim White records - some songs are fun, some are beautiful, & some are just very weird. Joe Henry's production (think Fuse) is a perfect compliment on many songs.

Very hard to find - no mention at all on Amazon or on Allmusic. Found it on a UK site, which links to The Establishment Store (http://www.establishmentstore.com/index2.html) , which appears to be a SS merchandise site.
Here's a review that I found & agree with:
Shawn Smith is a humble man in possession of an impossibly poignant voice and a special songwriting gift. Over the past decade he??s quietly flourished in a post-grunge Seattle as a singer, guitarist, and pianist for three bands ?? Satchel, Pigeonhed, and the confusing supergroup Brad (guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeremy Toback, and drummer Regan Hagar). An anonymous figure lost in the shuffle of false idols, Smith hasn??t helped himself by routinely changing bands or releasing solo albums on defunct labels.
Shield of Thorns is Smith??s third solo offering that unveils some wonderful recording sessions with the multi-talented Harold ??Happy? Chichester, guitarist Thaddeus Turner, and drummer Michael Shrieve. The results are a kind of contemporary AM gold ?? rock songs crafted with soul, passion, and astonishing benevolence.
Hauntingly beautiful ...??If Roses Take My Place? is an emotional piano stunner, ...??Golden Age? kicks up some roadhouse dust, ??Leaving California? is sing-along fare for road trips and summer campfires, and title track ??Shield of Thorns? is a vibrant little rock groover. Let??s hope that this store stays open for a very, very long time.

The latter is a hard rocking beauty of an album full of screaming and wailing guitar. I agree with Pollard's observation that it does a good job of capturing their live sound. Alternative Teenage Suicide is destined to become a crowd favorite.

it's a definite mishmash of styles...a number of songs are old songs that they hadn't recorded for any albums. Those sound very alt-country. The newly written songs (e.g. Smokers, Satellite (another Murry tune), New Kid) aren't alt-country at all.
overall, it's more alt-country than Satellite Rides or Fight Songs

Hey Jaguar, do you like The Volta Sound? I am really enjoying their Cuts 2000-2004. I saw them open up for Sonic Boom in Cleveland a few years ago and they were great live.

What did you read a bad review in? I think I read one...in Paste, or one of those paper mags of that ilk...but the rest have been good.
I didn't say they were bad reviews, I said they were 'eh' reviews, but semantics aside I was referring to a review in magnet magazine
there are also two bad reviews at metacritic.com

Not sure that I can answer this question fairly as I've only heard a few things by them.
Honestly, not too impressed but hear a lot of potential. They strike me as sounding sort of what The Beta Band may have sounded like way back in their early days. Couldn't really say for sure though.
Would like to hear them explore a lot more Psychedelia and in a decent studio setting with the right engineers and production. Maybe they've already done so and I just haven't heard it yet.

yeah, Lowlin Wolf is a great CD - I love that segue between Superstition/Going to Town - brings back memories of transcendental Whigs live experiences
The what jail is like EP also has a few live tracks and in the glory days of Napster I also downloaded some live Whigs of varying quality - would be happy to put it on a CD for you

My All American Girl is great album. Also, the song Ano Domination from the Fast Light With Radio Signal EP sounds more like Spacemen 3 than any other band I have heard. I quite like the whole Cleveland Davenport Collective with The Dreadful Yawns, 9 Volt Haunted House, and New Planet Trampoline.

Very mellow throughout, but an enjoyable listen. At first glance, I'm not as thrilled about the cover of "The Scientist" by Johnette Napolitano and Danny Loher as the previous reviews had stated. I thought she would really belt it out, but instead she sort of mumbles her way through it. I do enjoy the Postal Sevice cover though.
The Stills track is in a foreign language. It's always good to hear Hope Sandovals voice. Jamie Wyatt seems a little out of place and what the hell is Lifehouse doing on this compilation?
Truth be told, most of the folks on this board can put together the compilation from their own collection and buy one or two of the decent extra tracks off some digital music store. Wish I had done the same, but Smackette will be most pleased so it's a win/win for me.

It was somewhat accurate -- They aren't breaking any new ground here. But Clinic has its niche and plays it very well. If you enjoy the other albums, you will likely enjoy this one as well.

Amazon is much better for pictures, when you can get them there. In this case, the UK site had the larger image but the US site only offered the smaller one.

after internal wrangler and walking with thee, I really thought they had the potential to make a really great and original album, but after listening to this, I don't think they have progressed at all, it is fine, but I really think they are capable of more
i don't think I am going to give them a third chance with the live show

the theme was mid 80s jangle pop from around the world in order to pull my dj set together for the tsc show...
the aberfeldy is good, you get the feeling something really grand is taking place on the record. it's not as quite as polished as i normally like but not annoying as a lot of earnest recordings i cant't stand. hopefully a couple more listens will reveal some tasty lyrical content as well.

The Prodigy
Upon initial encounter, the Prodigy's comeback feels irrelevant and borderline pathetic.
"Firestarter" was the British act's breakout song. So it begins the new CD with a similarly snarly, electro-punk tune called . . . "Spitfire"? Dudes, you had seven years. Is that all you got?
Don't be fooled. By the end of this entertaining, sometimes excellent cut-and-paste journey, the Prodigy comes close to recapturing its genre-bending electronica crown. Just one man deserves to wear it. Prodigy guru Liam Howlett wrote and recorded this without vocalists Keith Flint (the double-Mohawked, child-scaring evil clown) and Maxim Reality. Armed with a laptop and a penchant for beat thievery, Howlett enlisted eclectic guests instead: looney-tune actress Juliette Lewis, rappers Kool Keith and Twista, Shahin Badar (who sang on the Prodigy's 1997 hit about smacking up your, uh, female golden retriever) -- even Liam Gallagher of Oasis, who sounds reasonably sober.
Howlett refocuses on dance aesthetics here, smoothing out the group's hybrid of rave ecstasy and headbanger crunch. "Girls" pumps out thumping, high-volume discotheque chic, while "Hot Ride" transforms the 5th Dimension's "Up Up and Away" into a slinky grind with a new-wave punk edge. The Prodigy's minimal lyrics are reliably stupid, repetitive and sometimes delivered in ridiculous voices ("If I was in World War II, they'd call me Spitfire!"). No matter. This album is best when nobody's singing and Howlett is pilfering melodies from somebody talented. "The Way It Is" gets supercharged by an incredibly funky reworking of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" riff. Unless the lawyers tell him to beat it, Howlett is one of the best at stealing in the name of groove.

Most of it sounds like Robert Smith fronting Discovery-era Daft Punk. It's ok but gets a bit tedious towards the end of the disc.
