Title: NYE
Post by: beaufort21 on October 29, 2008, 03:21:00 pm
Some friends and I are thinking of heading North for New Years Eve. Does the 9:30 usually have NYE shows and if so when do they normally announce them?

beaufort nc or sc?  i love the nc one.  930 always has a new years eve show.  this year is somebody called digital t-shirt.  i think they are swedish and a dan deacon / giant muppet monster side project band.  as you can see, there are no seats available for this one, because everybody loves sugar smacks.

S.C. You should give SC a try too. Way cooler, as I have been to both. Of course I am a bit biased too. Digital T-Shirt, huh? Kind of makes us rethink our plan. We were looking for a show with a bit more "umph" if you will.

It's weird to hear DC considered North.

Thanks for pointing that out azaghal1981. I totally missed it. Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to music so I saw it as plausible.

You really need to try another city if you want to see a GOOD band on new year's eve.

Sadly, it won't happen.

The whole purpose of the trip is to visit friends. It just would have been nice to have an extra added bonus with a GOOD NYE show. I've only been to 9:30 once (Brazilian Girls) and had a blast. We have the Orange Peel down here, but their NYE show isn't looking too promising this year. What are some other venues around there besides Black Cat?

And you sadly may want to find another forum for finding real answers to good questions such as these.

There will be a show on new years eve. No idea who it will be at this juncture. New shows are announced on Thursdays.  If you would like to get an email on Wednesdays announcing new shows, send an e-mail with your mailing address and/or e-mail address.

perhaps dan reads here, and will now form a giant mupper monster side project show with j. on guitar and beck on pump organ.  now that would be the nye scene to be at.

That would pretty much be the greatest band ever.

Post by: Julian, Alleged Computer F**kface on October 30, 2008, 04:37:00 pm
The greatest band ever would be Bradford Cox and J. Mascis on guitar, Thom Yorke on vocals, Sufjan Stevens on keys and ukulele, Avey Tare on drums, Jeff Mangum on pennywhistle, and Joanna Newsom on harp. Pitchfork said so.

Ehh that'd sound too cluttered.

And seriously, Pitchfork need to get their heads out of Bradford cox's ass. Microcastle sucks.

I thought it was pretty good. Not as good as Cryptograms or the Atlas Sound record -- definitely not a 9.2 or whatever nonsense they scored it -- but a solid 8.

I can't stand clutter! Most of the noisier stuff I listen to is produced by 1-2, in rare cases 3 people and it's always easy to tell who's doing what.

I hate it when a band decides to bring up 5-6 guests at the same time, who all proceed to do their own thing at once making for a ton of racket and not much more.

YES. This lineup is absolutely amazing... I saw that, and for the first time in my life considered buying plane tickets for show. Deadmau5 is one of my favorite touring acts right now (complete with official facebook status  ;)

Was fun for a while but eventually got old. And the opiate addicts in their fanbase became more and more plentiful which just made it depressing.

its not just wu-tang, most major artists get a little slack from most club owners, i imagine.

certainly club management has to notice the Pogues doing endless lines of coke backstage, too.

The last time I saw them was the last time they played the club. It was fucking horrid and pathetic. I left that show thinking "ok that's it" and that was that.
I did make it to a ridiculous post-show party in College Park though so the night wasn't a total wash.

The most fun I ever had was when I was living in San Fran. My favorite New Years show was this lineup:

 Primus

 The Pixies

 Janes Addiction

 at the Civic Center

and of course in Oakland was the legendary Grateful Dead NYE show, which I attended the year before. Basically, most promoters I think are just too lazy or don't have the clout to put a really good show together at that time of year.
Bill Graham could get things done! There aren't  any Bill Grahams around anymore. What a shame...

Yeah that Biscuits show at the 930 club in 2006 wasn't the best... that's the nature of the beast unfortunately. They're still my favorite act to see live and I wouldn't miss a New Years if I can afford it!

Crystal Castles - Music Hall of Williamsburg $35
 Blonde Redhead - Terminal 5 - $35
A Place to Bury Strangers - Mercury Lounge (dont know cost off hand)

Knitting Factory is going to be announcing their line up soon and its supposedly the last show ever there (at their location in tribeca). Lots of rumours going on about who will be playing there.

if i was going to post a show from the past i would have gone with jon spencer blues explosion/jesus lizard/cibo matto ... and someone else from 1996. that was fun. even if i haven't listened to any of those bands since around 1996.

i was just looking at the tickets.com page and saw the robbie randolph info. [/b]
The other band was Southern Culture On The Skids. That was one of my favorite new year's eves ever.

Knitting Factory is going to be announcing their line up soon and its supposedly the last show ever there (at their location in tribeca). Lots of rumours going on about who will be playing there.
APTBS is $25 which is great for a NYE show in NYC.

 I'm so doing it.

And I don't know whether to thank you or angrily ask why you did this to me.

The Knit lineup is Akron/Family, Deerhoof and Deer Tick according to Brooklyn Vegan.

I'd like to see Deerhoof again but not that badly and Akron/Family's set began to anger me before I walked out on it the one time I saw them.

 APTBS wins.

Is it me or is it weird to have a new years eve party at the Lincoln?
it's white ford bronco, but still just seems weird to be in a seated show for that

well that I don't think so, but not really fun to dance to 80s cover music in a row of seats
but maybe that's just me

I saw some guy get called out by security for standing at Morcheeba at the Lincoln. Even as Skye was trying to get everyone else to stand too.

Well they are too big for 930 and too small for Anthem

I guess Seth should build another couple of venues….

I thought the two venues had the same capacity

I stand corrected…. I always misremember Lincoln capacity as 1800

I guess either WFB or George Clinton had to be at the Lincoln
