it wouldn't surprise me, but wouldn't it be cool if there was another Christine on it - the list of 80s/early 90s bands who continue resurfacing astounds me

(I think they are working on full albums. At least, I sure hope so!)

 Sleepless
 Lyca Sleep
The High Violets (they are definitely working on one)

And last but not least, I can finally share this with others as I had been sworn to secrecy about this one. A friend of mine is compiling an album of Shoegaze remakes by current Shoegaze bands. Some of the artists who will be contributing are The Workhouse, Sennen, DestroyAllDreamers, Ulrich Schnauss, Windermere, Epic 45, Daydream Nation, Amusement Parks On Fire, Britta Phillips, LKWRM, Asobi Seksu, Loveliescrushing , Air Formation, Ladytron, Astrobrite, Douglas Heart (the band, not the man), Televise, Pia Fraus and The Radio Dept. among many others. I have most of the track listings but won't bother with them now. This should be a very good release and the NME has already promised him a spot. (Hope they are kind to him and the artists.)

*Kurosawa and PseudoScouse, this was the project that I told you was in the works but wasn't allowed to tell you anything about at the time.

No mention of a US release for the last record....

THE CHARLATANS SIGN NEW WORLDWIDE RECORDING CONTRACT 06 01 05
We are pleased to announce that the band signed a new multi-album worldwide deal with the Sanctuary Records Group before Christmas.

The actual deal was signed at Salford University after our Christmas lunch on the second day.

We join a contemporary roster that includes Morrissey, The Libertines, The Strokes, Spiritualized, Belle & Sebastian, Gorkys Zygotic Mynki, Babyshambles, Ikara Colt, Lou Reed, British Sea Power, Delays, Detroit Cobras.

The company owns a vast catalogue that includes classic artists such as The Kinks, Damned, Jonathan Richman & Modern Lovers, The Fall, Donovan, Undertones, ELP, Brian Auger, Black Sabbath, Small Faces, Chairman of the Board, The Nice, Sugarhill Gang, Motorhead, Humble Pie, Grandmaster Flash. The group owns the rights to many classic labels including the Immediate, Transatlantic, Trojan and Invictus labels from the 60's. Last year saw the company release the Brian Wilson 'Pet Sounds Live in London'.

The band has already begun the early stages of recording the new album, at various locations across the UK and North America. We expect to release our debut single for the label in the summer with the album later in 2005.

Check out the press release at www.sanctuarygroup.com. (http://www.sanctuarygroup.com)

On February 28th, one of my favorite bands, Swervedriver, is releasing a 2 CD set that is a collection of favorites along with some unreleased material.

Add to my list, Woven who are coming out with a new one.

Also, Bark Psychosis is working on another new one starting in May but no promise as to a release date. If it's anything like their latest release, it should be incredible.

Not sure what to make of it yet.
Very good musicians and the mixing and such is good but I'm thinking that they've scattered themselves too far. It's all over the place, genre-wise. Kind of like the Big Bang. I need to hear it a few more times before I really decide how I think about it.

From Matador:

 Stephen Malkmus

On May 24, Matador will be releasing the 3rd post-Pavement album from Stephen Malkmus, 'Face The Truth', on the every popular compact disc and phonograph long player configurations.  'Face The Truth', Stephen's first bona fide solo recording, captures our favorite singer-songwriter at the height of his creative powers.  We can say with total confidence that some of SM's wittiest moments to date are found on this album, along with many of his most heartfelt.  An album of staggering lyrical and musical range, 'Face The Truth' is unlikey to be supported by heavy touring (what with Stephen's pending dad-to-be status), but selected US dates are planned, along with a headlining appearance at Matador's SXSW event (March 18, The Parish, Austin).

the track listing is as follows:

 1. Invisible Bodies
 2. Baby C'mon
 3. Horslip
 4. Mmmmm...
 5. Loud Cloud Crowd
 6. No More Shoes
 7. Mama
 8. Malediction
 9. Pencil Rot
 10. It Kills
 11. I've Hardly Been

Josh Rouse leaves Nashville but records the record of his life just before he does.   The fury that surrounds awarding a 10 out of 10 to a record actually supercedes that surrounding the 1 out of 10s that occasionally (or this month perhaps a little more than occasionally) adorn these pages, and brings with it claims ala GCSE results-day of slipping standards and quotas, but having spent the best part of the last two months with the record, it??s no understatement to say that the new album from Mr Rouse is indeed nothing less than a monster. Marking his departure from the city of Nashville after a decade??s residency (in order to head for the relatively sunnier climes of Spain), it??s a record that consolidates all that??s good about Rouse??s music while perfecting his strengths throughout.  The fact that he??s leaving Nashville is obviously something that??s significant for Rouse, and perhaps significantly sad in its own way, and this partly comes through from the fact that despite the press release attesting to the album highlighting the variety of musical styles that you can find in modern Nashville, it??s without a doubt the most alt-country leaning record he??s ever produced, with echoes of Dylan, Springsteen and even Parsons.  ??It??s the Nighttime,? the album opener, is layered with lapsteel and all manner of instrumentation of the genre that Rouse has consciously set himself against in recent years, but you have to wonder why when you hear how well the whole thing hangs together ?? it feels far more cohesive and less forced than anything he??s ever done, including the acclaimed ??1972.? Rouse??s reasons for leaving Nashville and indeed the US could be due to any number of things, but the vibe of the second track, the lead single from the record ??Winter in the Hamptons? with its harrying against governments led by liars can??t, you imagine, be entirely co-incidental.  Elsewhere on the record, there are real treasures to be found, including the Jeff Lynne-esque and staggeringly beautifully orchestrated ??Streelights,? the Beach Boys harmonies of ??Carolina? and the luxuriously emotional ??Sad Eyes,? complete with strings that build and a chorus that rises higher and higher into sentiments that become almost overwhelming in their strength. That Rouse has always been supremely talented is not really in question, but it still comes as a surprise that he??s managed to make a record that feels so instantly essential and rewarding. 2005??s first contender then for album of the year, and one that would take some beating in any year ?? Rouse has firmly found himself and, however hackneyed it sounds, created a genuine instant classic.

New Mountain Goats Album Out in April

 Aaron Mandel reports:
Okay, who said, "a few [...] critics whose experience with drugs has largely been limited to listening to Lou Reed albums have enjoyed claiming that I don't sound "convincing.' If I'd've known these guys were gonna front like that, I'd've sent them postcards from jail, but hindsight is 20/20, I guess"? Oh, shit, are we still printing the headlines bigger than the articles? Guess you figured it out, then-- that's John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats, talking to a Philadelphia paper last autumn about the move from writing fictional songs to basing his work on his own life.

Last year's We Shall All Be Healed portrayed a clique of young drug users and general miscreants struggling to get their crap together; the material on the upcoming The Sunset Tree seems to cover an even earlier part of his life, a childhood that involved a lot of pop music (good) and parental abuse (bad). Darnielle went into the studio last November along with Peter Hughes, John Vanderslice, Franklin Bruno, Scott Solter, and cellist Erik Friedlander, coming out with 13 songs that are presumably a lot more life-affirming than we're making them sound. According to Darnielle, these 13:

 01 You or Your Memory
 02 Broom People
 03 This Year
 04 Dilaudid
 05 Dance Music
 06 Dinu Lipatti's Bones
 07 Up the Wolves
 08 Lion's Teeth
09 Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod?
 10 Magpie
 11 Song for Dennis Brown
 12 Love Love Love
 13 Pale Green Things

The album reportedly comes out April 26 in the U.S. and most of the world, a day earlier in the UK. This is the third Mountain Goats full-length to be released on 4AD Records, who no doubt signed the band solely to give their fellow Brits twenty-nine coveted hours of extra listening before East-Coast record stores open.

The phrase "the sunset tree" comes from an obscure 19th-century religious song, "The Tyrolese Evening Hymn"; Darnielle says he took it from a scene in Samuel Butler's semi-autobiographical novel The Way Of All Flesh, where a clergyman beats his young son bloody because of a speech impediment that prevents the son from enunciating clearly while singing the hymn. Maybe the songs aren't that life-affirming after all... If you're raring to hear these songs (and, based on the radio session the Mountain Goats did for the BBC recently, you should be), a couple live dates have been announced between now and the record's release, so hopefully you live here:

02-10 Los Angeles, CA - Echo Lounge
02-12 Seattle, WA - Crocodile Cafe

On May 9, Matador Records will be releasing the 5th album by Austin, TX's SPOON,  'Gimme Friction' (OLE 660-2,1 CD/LP), worldwide with the exception of North America.  The album is coming out on May 10 in the US and Canada a via Merge.

the tracklisting is as follows :

 The Beast and Dragon, Adored
The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine
 I Turn My Camera On
 My Mathematical Mind
 The Delicate Place
 Sister Jack
 I Summon You
 The Infinite Pet
 Was It You?
 They Never Got You
 Merchants of Soul

 writes the band :

"Gimme Fiction is the wildest Spoon LP to date - it's also Jim Eno's favorite. It was put to tape from July 'til September 2004, and like our last two albums it was co-produced with Mike McCarthy in Austin at Jim's Public HiFi studio. What else. . .it begins with the sound of a nice, long inhale and ends with the Tosca Strings. It covers such topics as long distance relationships, the apocalyptic bent of certain American Southerners, neckrugs, emotional shutdowns, Ralph Reed Jr., a musical called The Stranger Dance, and Marquette, Michigan. Did I mention it's the longest Spoon record yet?

"In February we'll be playing the Saturday of All Tomorrow's Parties in Camber Sands, England, followed by a headlining show in London on Monday the 28th at the Garage."

 ??Leave Less Waiting? b/w ??Sky??s A Mirror?
 Cass Records

 Brendan Benson
 ??What I??m Looking For?
 V2 (download)

It should be noted that the Waxwings aren??t a singles band. These four corduroyed dudes have proven nothing if not how to make languid jangle stretch out over an entire record. Here, with two cuts plucked from the midsection of their latest full-length, Let??s Make Our Descent, the pop-perfecters have selected a pair of jams that, though bursting with trademark Byrdsian harmonies, plucky rhythms and psych-poetic ambiguity, fairly trip over themselves as the grooves unwind. ??Leave Less Waiting? has a cocksure swagger that never really finds an audience for its confidence. ??Sky??s A Mirror,? while packed full of verve, is layered with a kind of chaos that can??t decide whether it wants to party or make you sit up and pay attention. The Waxwings are masters of the quick one as bracing tonic for the masterstrokes of languid, Rickenbacher and heavy-lidded-though-clear-headed pop land- and cloud-scapes. This double-shot simply doesn??t play to their strengths.

Meanwhile, surfers to the V2 website can get a taste of the latest offering from the Waxwings?? partner-in-pop Brendan Benson. In fact, Benson produced the aforementioned Waxwings tracks at his Grand Studio, but we digress ?

??What I??m Looking For? is a slight romp directly through the heart of Benson country inasmuch as its lyrics ?? as well as Benson??s earnest, measured and half-heartbroken delivery ?? play expertly with that lost-boy line between ambivalence and braggadocio. He reminds us that ??I visit hell on a daily basis/And I see the sadness in all your faces.? And then there??s a little bass lick and he??s back wondering how he doesn??t know what he??s looking for, but he??s gonna look some more. It??s an airtight and irresistible construction. And if it??s any indication of his forthcoming album, Alternative to Love, OC viewers and indie-pop fans alike should soon be getting wind of Benson.

Hello everyone.

As many of you know, our new record, The Woods, comes out on May 24th. While there is really nothing we can do to stop people from leaking/downloading promo copies of 'The Woods' on the Internet, we want to say that we don't support this action and we want to address it directly, and hopefully, preemptively.

It seems important for you to know how we feel about it.

The people we are most excited to have hear this record are our friends and you, our fans, the people who have supported us and who are eager to hear our new ideas. We feel as impatient for this new music to get out into the world as we're sure some of you do.

Our latest record is something that we have worked on for a long time. The writing took nearly two years in an effort to challenge and push ourselves. And the recording/mixing itself took six weeks. So much of this new record is a response to the deadening and watering down of music. We wanted to make something that felt wild and alive and that made us excited to wake up in the mornings. There is art work and lyrics and images that we want to share. Ideally, we want to present this record in the way we envision it; as a complete entity, flowing and tangible and within the context that we have created for it. Part of that context is the community that we come from, and this community includes you. And we have some of the best fans: you are smart and critical and outspoken, and we're proud to feel a connection with you.

We know that most people who download indie songs/albums for free find other ways of supporting the bands they love. And we acknowledge that it is a new era and that many people discover music through file sharing. We feel lucky to be a band that has grown organically over the years and we realize that technology has changed the entire process of growth and awareness of music. (We love, for instance, that bootlegs of our live shows are traded on the Internet.) It's scary to imagine that this leak might actually affect our livelihoods, but ultimately this isn't about the fear of people not supporting us financially as indie artists. We don't think of 'The Woods' as some product getting out there early, we think of it as our art and lives and dreams. For us it's about respect and about people supporting us by being aware of our artistic intent. We ask that you please respect our wishes to present this record the way we intended. We're certain that you would want the same for your own endeavors, artistic or otherwise.

So much of what this record is about sacrificing everything to feeling, it's about experience and living and being in the present tense. There will be so many things to experience between now and May 24th; so many other records to sit with and live through, as well as films, books, friends, conversations, etc.

The most honest thing we can say is that it breaks our hearts to think of this being out there early. It actually just feels awful. The release date is 3 months away. We have worked for so long on this record. It's not real for us until May 24th; that is the moment when we get to share this piece of our lives that we are so proud of, to share it with you the way we intended; please wait until then to share it with us.

If you have put this record up on the Internet, please take it down now.

 Thank you,
 Corin, Carrie, and Janet

the new sleater-kinney is a MONSTER of an album. wow. i'm usually not a fan of dave fridmann's production -- in fact, i think he's one of the most overrated producers out there -- but he really does a fine job on this one. they definitely sacrificed some of their catchiness/poppiness, but it's worth it. by my count, this is their 5th truly fantastic album. (not a fan of the first or all hands on the bad one, which i find rather boring.) there are very, very few bands that can boast that.

Coldplay have bumped back their long-awaited third album to June. The as-yet-titled follow-up to 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head was originally due in March, but initial recordings with producer Ken Nelson were scrapped in favor of starting over with A Rush mixer Danton Supple.
"I think we were in no hurry, because the prospect of touring again was so daunting that we felt we should take our time," drummer Will Champion posted on the band's Web site. "As soon as we gave ourselves a proper deadline we started to be much more productive and the stuff we were doing was miles better. It's always the same with us -- the best stuff comes when we start to panic."

A Rush was similarly delayed: It was originally targeted for June of 2002 but didn't hit stores until that August. "I'd hate to rush the end of the record," bassist Guy Berryman told Rolling Stone in April of 2002, "because we have to get it in on time."

As for the new album, Champion says the band has completed fourteen to fifteen tracks -- including "Square One," "What If" and "The Hardest Part" -- and is now paring it down.

Meanwhile, Coldplay will perform at radio station KCRW's Sounds Eclectic Evening in Los Angeles on March 12th before headlining the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, on April 30th. They will then kick off a world tour in the U.K. in June.

Mountain Goats Plan Expanded LP, Set Tour Dates

 Rob Mackey reports:
Beyond the Bob Pollards and Jandeks of our insulated lil' bubble, there aren't that many jaw-droppingly prolific musicians whose recorded output is fawn-all-over-able. John Darnielle-- a man capable of releasing somewhere in the ballpark of 40 7", 10", 12", CDs, and cassettes over 14 years-- is my personal favorite workhorse.

So of course I was all smiles when the Mountain Goat recently announced the release of The Sunset Tree, the follow-up to last year's delightful We Shall All Be Healed. Yup, as reported last month by the Fork, the album is streetin' over in the UK on April 25 and on April 26 in the U.S. But what we didn't tell you back then-- 'cause it wasn't news yet-- is that the latest Goats offering will also be released as a limited-edition vinyl, featuring home-demo'd versions of the album's tracks, as well as some "adult-contemporary love jams," which reminds us of Darnielle's public love-in for "Ignition (Remix)" over at Last Plane to Jakarta. So if we keep them fingers crossed, kids, maybe the Mountain Goats'll be sippin' on coke and rum, 'cause they're like "so what, I'm drunk!" come late April.

The CD version of The Sunset Tree was produced by John Vanderslice and features the work of Franklin Bruno and acclaimed jazz cellist Eric Freidlander, among other guests. Like its predecessor, it's a set of personal and often dark lyrics combined with upbeat melodies. As previously reported, its tracklisting is:

 01 You or Your Memory
 02 Broom People
 03 This Year
 04 Dilaudid
 05 Dance Music
 06 Dinu Lipatti's Bones
 07 Up the Wolves
 08 Lion's Teeth
09 Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod?
 10 Magpie
 11 Song for Dennis Brown
 12 Love Love Love
 13 Pale Green Things

We're telling you first, before we alert the pundits and the scenesters and the music business glitterati (they won't take our calls anyway).  The title of the new album is "Discover a Lovelier You."  It will be released in the US on June 14, 2005, which is of course Flag Day.  I don't have release dates yet in other countries, as I don't know when their Flag Days are, but as soon as I hear from One Little Indian, who is releasing in the UK and Europe, and Spunk, who is releasing in Australia, I will let you know.

I've got a general question.  I don't understand the interest in getting an album title or track names months before a release.  It doesn't tell me anything.  Am I missing something?  I'm interested in the release date of an upcoming album, but lots of pre-release info seems useless.  Not criticizing anyone's approach to their music luv, just wondering.

Sometimes, knowing the title in advance has helped me find a pre-release/promo copy in the used bins of record stores before the release date.

As for song titles, sometimes I've heard the songs live before, so knowing that the track they played live on the last tour will be on the album is cool to know.

But mostly, it's just because I'm a self-proclaimed music geek.

50 Foot Wave release their debut album "Golden Ocean" on this week.

Formed by Kristin Hersh in 2003, 50 Foot Wave released a self-titled mini album last year - 6 blistering songs whose electrifying energy astonished anyone who encountered them.  Now the band follow that up with "Golden Ocean", their full-length debut.

50 Foot Wave is Hersh??s first new band since she founded the influential Throwing Muses, and it's a harder, faster, more direct experience than anything she has recorded before.  Kristin sums up her vision for 50 Foot Wave thus : "What could be more fun that turning everything up to 10 and screaming your head off for an hour every night?"

 ***

These are the songs which make up "Golden Ocean", as described by Kristin  :

 ? Long Painting

"There was a company in Seattle called "Long Painting" that was being accused of poisoning the environment when we lived there.  We also have a very "long painting" of my husband done by the artist Rufo, hanging in our living room.  A little beauty, a little ugly...it all works out in the end.  Or it's supposed to, anyway."

 ? Bone China

"Bones and dishes break, so does most everything else, especially when you're jumpy and twitchy."

 ? Clara Bow

"Summer is SO stupid and EVERYBODY likes it.  Why?  After she retired, Clara Bow moved out to the desert with her husband and sons and then lost control of her brain."

 ? Pneuma

"Pneuma is soul breath.  We have to breathe through pollution and see past the idiots and hear each other through their inane chatter."

 ? Dog Days

"A dirty beach, angry coffee, a prickly touch... all things that are supposed to  be soothing but which aren't always on your side."

 ? Petal

"Going home, you find out that home's gone, so you try to remember it exactly as it was."

 ? Sally Is A Girl

"This song is about a blackout in August in New Orleans.  It's very hot there, even at night, so everybody was outside walking around, trying to keep cool.  It didn't work.  The title comes from an episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" about gender confusion and stereotyping."

 ? El Dorado

"This is a "life on the road" song, unfortunately.  Sorry.  Most of my life has been spent on the road.  At least it's not a country song, though.  When you get fried eggs in a diner, they always look like eyeballs."

 ? Ginger Park

"Remembering what it was like to grow up in a beach town... greasy french fries and glossy tourists.  Diving... Killing time falling into each other, each of you hoping you're good enough for  the other one."

 ? Golden Ocean

"The "golden ocean" is what my 8 year old son, Wyatt, calls the LA lights at night.  He puts me to shame by seeing beauty in everything, when I just glance up and then back down again."

Bob Mould To Release New Solo Album In 2005

Bob Mould has announced the release date for his next solo record. On July 26, the former leader of Husker Du and Sugar will release Body Of Song on Yep Roc. Billboard reports that the new material will be acoustic-based, but will be more rock-oriented than 2002??s Modulate.

Mould commented on his blog: "Nothing like a deadline to get me to finish something that has been dragging on for far too long. Well, I shouldn't put it that way; that makes it sound a little mechanical. I am shocked at the patience I showed in this whole process -- there simply wasn't a full album's worth of quality material. Or, more accurately put, there wasn't an album of material which sounded like a coherent statement."

Mould??s latest musical offering to the world happened when he teamed up with Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino. The two worked on a remix of Interpol??s ??Length Of Love?, although a commercial release for the track has yet to be determined.

From my pal Rob in LA via the BJM board:                                                                                                                                                    Sunday night after the Warlocks/Morning After Girls show a bunch of people
came by for a late night hang at the studio. Robert from BRMC brought their
new record and proceded to blow us all away. It's VERY different but still
sounds like BRMC. I think it's the best thing they've ever done. There are
lots of acoustic guitars that sound incredible. They have a country
blues/gospel thing running through the whole record. It's awesome.

By the way Trevor, singer from the High Dials has been in town mixing their
new record and it is amazing as well. It's all over the map stylistically
but still sounds like the High Dials. VERY psychedelic. It's a bit
mellower, with one song that's kinda Smiths-like and others that are almost
 baroque.

The third Tyde album is about 3/4 done and it is also full of great songs
and some fucked up sounds. Darren is writing some of his best lyrics ever.
Much of the record was recorded live with 6 or 7 people crammed in the
same room Dylan/Highway 61 style. Some of the titles include "Do It Again
Again", "County Line", "Too Many Kims", "Brock Landers", and "Aloha Breeze".
The stlyes are also all over the map but Tyde fans will not be
 dissapointed.

There's another record that I'm producing that I guarantee will blow all of
your minds. The band is Meow Meow. If a mix of Beatles/Sonic Youth/Beach
 Boys/Pink Floyd/Teenage Fanclub/Mercury Rev/Elliot Smith sounds appealing
then you're in for a treat. Their first record came out last year called
'Snow Gas Bones' and is brilliant but this new one is just fucking
tremendous. Their web site is http://www.meowmeowmusic.com. (http://www.meowmeowmusic.com.) I think.

For what it's worth the new Warlocks stuff sounded great live as well.
Go buy the new Dead Meadow record!!!!
Contribute to the revolution. Music is not dead- far from it.
The Morning After Girls also were amazing the other night!!!
So much great music out there- you just need to find it and support it.

 That is all,
 Rob

p.s. Love the meow meow   :D      ,Sparks

Dressy Bessy Have a New Album in the Works (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/05-03/18.shtml#story9)
 Jason Toon reports:
We all know the thin Denver air turns Coors Field pop-ups into home runs. Might it also account for the preternatural catchiness of hometown pop worthies Dressy Bessy? Nope, no asterisks necessary: Their self-titled 2003 effort was recorded in New York with Britt Myers, as was Electrified, which tumbles into the arms of the public June 14 courtesy of Transdreamer Records. You want song titles? Song titles you shall have:

 01 Second Place
 02 Side 2
 03 Electrified
 04 Small
 05 She Likes It
 06 Stop Foolin'
 07 Hello Hello
 08 Ringalingaling
09 It Happens All the Time
 10 Tay Tay Tay Again
 11 Call It Even
 12 Who'd Stop the Rain

They'll also have an as-of-yet-unspecified song on the soundtrack to the Yankified (or Red Soxified, as it were) movie version of Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch, out April 8. A June tour is promised, but until then, one show booked for the hometown faithful:

wanna go Markie??

April sees the release of a retrospective double-album by The Fat Lady Sings on Warner Music, featuring many of the band??s best-loved moments, plus a whole host of rare and previously-unavailable material. With the working title of ??The Fat Lady Singles (& Opera Obscura)?, CD1 will include all 10 of the band??s singles, while CD2 is composed of rarities drawn from across the band??s career, including some never-before-released tracks.

And to celebrate this long-overdue event, the band have decided to reform to play two live shows, one each in Dublin and London ?? their first time appearing onstage together since December 1993. The details of the shows are as follows:

Vicar Street, Dublin ?? Friday, April 8th
Islington Academy, London ?? Saturday, April 9th

Well I had hopes for a Driveblind CD, but am beginning to worry about what if anything will appear.  Hailing from Aberbeen Scotland, the band caused a bit of a stir in LA at Viper Room showcases and were signed to Interscope. I've been spinning the song "The Fool Rides Again" since early last year a song which was a live in the studio demo.  Driveblind decided to go straight for the same sort of Geezer rock the Charlatans are doing these days.

Why am I worried?  They have been recording forever and have worked with two producers, both of which are never good for a new band.  So we'll see...

Moose is currently in the studio recording material.  This is a band that is made up of perfectionists and they usually take a bit of time to do things. There's no set release date for anything yet, but I think it's exciting they're in the studio working on something.  I know, I know, there's only about 2 of you that have even heard of Moose, let alone heard them, but hey, thought i'd post about it anyway...

From the Warlocks:                                                                                           Hallelujah! The Warlocks new album tentatively called Surgery was mastered today! The release date is set for some time around July or August. We are sorry about some of these delays, but making records on this scale (something The Warlocks aren't used to) can be quite complex. Speaking of complex, plans are in the works for a possible DVD, and a limited edition vinyl version of Surgery with some different songs, song order and layout.

The Mountain Goats and Bruce Springsteen will both release records on April 26. Guess which one these lyrics are found on:

I broke free on a Saturday morning
I put the pedal to the floor
 Headed north on Mills Avenue
And listened to the engine roar

My broken house behind me and good things ahead
A girl named Cathy wants a little of my time
Six cylinders underneath the hood crashing and kicking
Uh-huh, listen to the engine whine

A-ha! You think. That??s clearly Springsteen??it sounds just like an outtake from 1978??s Darkness on the Edge of Town. But these verses come from ??This Year,? one of many standout tracks written by head Mountain Goat John Darnielle for The Sunset Tree, which I was able to hear an advance copy of thanks to the kind folks at The Compact Disc Store (clever name there, guys. What do you sell?). A lot of these songs recall vintage Springsteen in terms of lyrics and in terms of production; the album often sounds like Darkness-era songs re-conceived for the later stops of the Tom Joad tour, when Bruce added some occasional and understated drums and strings to what had been a one-man show, producing revelatory new interpretations of his back catalog??all weary and contemplative, empty space punctuated by sparse instrumentation that sounded lush anyway. Had Springsteen had spent his mid-to-late-twenties reading Sophocles and Virgil and smoking a flippin?? joint or two instead of watching John Ford movies, reading Steinbeck and heroically abstaining for his art, Darkness might have sounded a little like The Sunset Tree. Both albums chronicle the conflicts between intense poet-rockers in the making and emotionally wrecked, physically shattered father-figures, and both albums hold out the power and promise of rock n?? roll as salvation from the desperation and brutality of life.

(If Darnielle spent most of his til-now career writing songs about people who were absolutely not him??the Alpha Couple, Grendel??s mother??and gradually turned towards autobiography with this album and its immediate predecessor, Springsteen has been walking the other direction on that road, gradually paring the autobiographical songs from his albums in favor of third-person narratives about very non-Springsteenly people??Mexican immigrants and meth-makers. It??d be interesting to see how The Ghost of Tom Joad and We Shall All Be Healed overlap and inform each other??one set of songs about illegal immigrants ruining their lives running drugs and cooking meth and another set about speed-freaks ruining their lives taking meth and running from the damage they??ve caused).

But I??ve probably tortured that comparison long enough; there are no doubt some of you who would not see comparisons to Springsteen as a compliment. I see you there: you??re easily identifiable by your stooped posture, the consequence of a lifetime shouldering the back-bending burden of your impeccable indie cred. Regardless, The Sunset Tree is a great album, if sometimes hard to take. These are some of the best songs Darnielle has written, but they??re at times so brutal, so raw, that they often make for uncomfortable listening. It??s hard to imagine a sloshed concert-goer shouting out requests for a narrative of abuse like ??Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod????and not just because it??s really hard to say with beer-tongue.

And speaking of saying: one of the most effective weapons in The Mountain Goats?? arsenal is Darnielle??s voice; there??s not a performer this side of late-era Dylan who uses his voice??s limitations more effectively than Darnielle, and this record indicates that he??s still honing that particular blade. It would be easy for him to rely on the soul-in-tatters yelp that lends such force to such past fan-faves as ??Home Again Garden Grove? or ??Family Happiness???and it does claw its way free here, at the end of ??Dilaudid? and most effectively on ??Up the Wolves? and ??The Magpie???but elsewhere he sings in a haunting, whispery falsetto. It makes sense. Too many cold-eyed rave-ups would have seemed weird and out of place on an album that is in large part about a protagonist struggling with the desire to be invisible, about wanting to act but fearing the terror and pain that are sure to follow.

In lesser hands, this album could have been a disaster??a song-cycle about a teenager??s bad relationship with his abusive stepfather, one that name-checks Kurt Cobain. But then again, it also name-checks pianist Dinu Lipatti, reggae legend Dennis Brown, and the she-wolf who nursed the legendary founders of Rome in their infancy and abandonment, so that Cobain reference is well earned. It??s that sense of perspective and context that helps these songs transcend the limitations of autobiographical, confessional, heart-sleeve tedium. In fact, I think it??s a mark of the album??s success that I went back and forth on the question of whether it did indeed achieve that transcendence until the final track, ??Pale Green Things,? which throws a strange and bright new light on everything that comes before it. Not only one of the best songs in the Mountain Goats?? catalog on its own, it also rearranges the rest of the album into a whole that??s more complicated, more rewarding, and ultimately more satisfying than the one I might have been expecting.

The Return of Social D
 Updated 03:28 PDT Sat, Apr 16 2005
It's hard to believe it's been almost a decade since Social Distortion has put out an album of original music. Finally, the L.A. punks - fronted by the gravel-voiced Mike Ness - have added Sex, Love and Rock ??n' Roll to the band's discography.
It includes the "emotional journey of love, loss and acceptance" on a song devoted to the band's late founding guitar player, Dennis Danell, who died of a brain aneurysm in 2000. Still, Ness has written his share of signature hard rock numbers for the album, including "Reach For The Sky" and "Nickels And Dimes."
Ness, guitarist Jonny Wickersham, bassist Matt Freeman and drummer Charlie Quintana will be playing the tunes next month and the beginning of June, starting off at the Magic City Music Hall in Johnson City, N.Y., May 12th.
They'll spend most of their time on the Eastern Seaboard throughout the month with stops at the WHFStival and the KNDD Endfest.
Fans on he West Coast don't have a lot of chances to see them (the tour ends June 8 at the University of California in Davis), but a few more dates might be added. And heck, after more than 20 years in the biz, Social D has shown that there's still plenty of tread on the tires.

another "best of" - this time one of my favorite bands

 Boo Radleys Ready 2xCD Compilation

 James Gregory reports:
Though they played a major role in defining British indie in the 90s (before fellow countrymen Blur and Oasis launched it into the mainstream), chances are if you called the U.S. home, you were pretty much oblivious to the Boo Radleys, who unfortunately lacked the cheeky shenanigans to propel them onto the cover of the British tabloids. Well, your chance for a second date is on its way. According to Sanctuary Records, the influential (but sadly disbanded) group are prepping a career-spanning 2xCD anthology for release on July 4 through Castle Music, a Sanctuary offshoot.

Entitled Find the Way Out, the comp marks the group's first comprehensive hits collection, and includes tracks culled from each of the three labels they recorded for during their lifespan-- Action, Rough Trade, and Creation Records. The 40 remastered songs included on the set offer a healthy number of selections from each of the band's six studio albums (most notably the classic Giant Steps), as well as singles, b-sides, and previously unreleased material. The album also features deluxe packaging with artwork by original collaborator Stephen Wood. Tracklist for Find the Way Out:

 >>Disc 1:
 01 Walking 5th Carnival
 02 Catweazle
 03 Hip Clown Rag (demo)
 04 Kaleidoscope
 05 The Finest Kiss
 06 Everybird
 07 Lazy Day

If you call him Carl, he may not answer you...not that we've tried. But just because A.C. Newman, who recently made pop hearts swoon with his solo effort The Slow Wonder, has a new and acronymic name, it doesn't mean he's not still doing what he does best. Yes, Mr. Newman is, of course, a member of one of Canada's finest exports (after Nickleback, of course), the New Pornographers, who are reportedly just finishing up work on their third full-length, Twin Cinema. Sources at Mint, the band's Canadian label, tell us Twin Cinema will be finished and ready for your grubby little hands on August 23-- we presume that date will be the same for the Matador release in the U.S., but that's currently unconfirmed. They also hit us up with a tracklist, and you know we love that:

 01 Twin Cinema
02 The Bones of an Idol
 03 Use It
 04 The Bleeding Heart Show
 05 Jackie, Dressed in Cobras
 06 The Jessica Numbers
 07 These Are the Fables
 08 Sing Me Spanish Techno
 09 Falling Through Your Clothes
 10 Broken Breads
 11 Three or Four
 12 Star Bodies
 13 Streets of Fire
 14 Stacked Crooked

Elbow are putting the finishing touches to their third album and
they say it sounds "terribly romantic." They're planning an album launch in May,
at the studio in Salford where the album was recorded. The first single will
probably be a song called Buddah With Mace, or one called Leaders of the Free
World, although they don't have a title for album yet. They were in the studio
in Manchester for the last eight months recording the record, before a short
trip to LA to mix it.

Frontman Guy Garvey gave 6 Music a few clues to how it'll sound: "There's
definitely some stuff there that Elbow fans will love, but there's also some new
twists. "It's terribly romantic as a record, but then it's got some real sort of
hard points to it as well." And he told us about some of the inspiration for the
record: "It sounds like a band playing in a room. The most important thing for
us was to get the room on the recording. "In the same way as, like, a Pixies
album or a PJ Harvey album, you feel like you're in the environment for the
duration for the record. "That was really important this time."

New Oranger LP Out in September

 Ray Suzuki reports:
If memory serves us right (and given our frequent hits from the office bong, we can't promise anything), it's only been about two years since San Francisco underdogs Oranger delivered Shutdown the Sun, a gem of an album full of timeless pristine pop, although with elections and wars and Michael Jackson and whatnot, it sure seems like longer. In any case, it's 2005 now, and Oranger have a new record, entitled New Comes and Goes, ready for release via Eenie Meenie-- perhaps not coincidentally the home of Oranger member Jim Lindsay's other project the High Water Marks, a band also featuring erstwhile Apple in Stereo Hilary Sidney. Or was that a tangent?

The record is scheduled to be released September 20, and true to form, it will have songs with titles on it. Tracklist:

01 Crooked in the Weird of the Catacombs
 02 New Comes and Goes
 03 Sukiyaki
04 Garden Party for the Murder Pride
 05 Outtatoch
 06 RadioWaves
 07 X-Adjust
 08 Crones
 09 Haeter
 10 Flying Pretend
 11 Light Machine
 12 Target You By Feel
 13 Come Back Tomorrow

BRMC Return With HOWL

Oh happy day! Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have completed work on their third record, titled HOWL. The worldwide release date is set for August 22, which will be preceded by the single ??Ain??t No Easy Way? sometime in early August. The record will be released in the UK on Echo, and in the US on RCA. If the audio from their website is any indication to the new direction of their music, this should make for a very interesting change for the group.

You might remember the drama between the band and their drummer Nick Jago. Well, according to the band??s website he is back in BRMC once again. In a message to their message board, bassist and co-vocalist Robert Turner said: ??For everyone that's been concerned and in the dark on what's happening with Nick, we've recently reconciled with Nick and he's back playing drums again. We're all really happy to be playing music together again. It's more fun than it's ever been in the past.?

Although the album is still a few months away, BRMC went ahead and posted the tracklisting. Some UK dates have already been announced with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Hopefully some US dates will show up closer to the release of their new record.

 HOWL
 01. ??Shuffle Your Feet?
 02. ??Howl?
 03. ??Devil??s Waitin???
 04. ??Ain??t No Easy Way?
 05. ??Still Suspicion Holds You Tight?
 06. ??Fault Line?
 07. ??Promise?
 08. ??Weight Of The World?
 09. ??Restless Sinner?
 10. ??Gospel Song?
 11. ??Complicated Situation?
 12. ??Sympathetic Noose?
 13. ??The Line?

Drawing its name from a line in his classic 1977 anthem "Lust for Life", the upcoming 2xCD collection A Million in Prizes: The Iggy Pop Anthology, is set to offer the most comprehensive overview of the aging punk predator's 35-year career yet released.
According to Billboard, A Million in Prizes will see a U.S. release on July 19, and features 37 tracks drawn from Pop's massively influential output with the Stooges, as well as his numerous solo releases. Disc one kicks off the history lesson with a healthy dose of material from each of the Stooges three studio albums, as well as Pop's first two David Bowie-produced solo offerings, while disc two covers the highlights from Pop's subsequent, less-revelatory years up through his most recent release, 2003's Skull Ring. Tracklist:

 >>Disc one:
 01 1969
 02 No Fun
03 I Wanna Be Your Dog
 04 Down on the Street
 05 I Got a Right
 06 Gimme Some Skin

A reunited Stooges will also be playing a lone London gig in August, performing their classic second album Fun House in its entirity as part of ATP's "Don't Look Back" concert series on August 30. Amber Headlights was recorded after the Whigs split up. It was the album Dulli was working on when Ted Demme died. After that, he scrapped it and did Blackberry Belle.

 UPDATE: WHAT'S GOING ON>>>>

Currently I am residing in Los Angeles, CA. I have been here for some time recording with people of various talents. AS OF TODAY, 11, MAY, 2005.....I am in the process of mixing THE NEW RECORD in a BALLROOM in GRIFFITH PARK. I recorded 24 NEW SONGS...however this WILL NOT BE A DOUBLE ALBUM. MOST of the TRACKS were produced with MICHAEL BEINHORN (Herbie Hancock, Social Distortion, Violent Femmes, Soundgarden, Korn, yes...Korn!) and myself, while others were produced by DON FLEMING (Sonic Youth, Teenage Fanclub) and myself. THE recording process was a roller coaster ride filled with moments of triumph as well as frustration. IT has NOW come together as something that I am extremely proud of and could not have done on my own. Some songs were recorded "live" with MINIBAR and Joe Kennedy providing the backup. Others were built from the ground up with either myself or Dave Grohl playing drums. We were fortunate enough to coax the great Leon Russell in for a day to play some excellent piano. Natalie Maines sings on two songs, while Emily Robison and Martie Maguire add banjo and fiddle respectively. Farmer Dave Scher (All Night Radio, Beachwood Sparks) provides pedal and lap steel guitar, as well as some non-conventional organ. Zach Schaeffer plays bass on a few songs. Doc Dauer and Ramee Jaffe showed up for some guitar and B-3 as well. Oh, and it has all been captured on film which is NOW being edited together for your enjoyment.

PLAN ON HEARING THIS RECORD in THE FALL of 2005. AS FAR AS TOURING...STAY TUNED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME & LOYALTY.

this sounds promising

Iron & Wine, Calexico Reveal Details of Collaborative LP

Remember when you were a kid and you thought combining two foods you liked would create some sort of delicious superfood? Remember how that shit never worked (ice cream pizza)? Thankfully, combining two bands actually can turn out better. Take, say, the dusty Southwestern sounds of Calexico and combine that with Iron & Wine's back porch sentimentality. What you've got is Lays in Reins, a seven-song mini-LP of some of Sam Beam's songs backed by Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico, as well as a few other Tucson musicians.

The particular deliciousness of this collaboration is pure speculation, of course, as the li'l long-player won't be available until fall of this year, but Burns seems pleased with the results. "It's kind of got that Tucson, Arizona sound," he told Pitchfork this week. "It was funny, in the process of mixing some of these songs, we would send [Iron & Wine frontman Sam Beam] the mixes as MP3 files over the internet. So he would listen to them and he would say, 'No, no. Put more stuff in there.' He liked the idea of this being something different that what he would do with an Iron & Wine record, where the arrangements might be a little more minimal. So we've got some instruments that fills it out a little bit." Tracklist:

 01 He Lays in Reins
 02 Prison on Route 41
 03 History of Lovers
 04 Red Dust
 05 Burn That Broken Bed
 06 16, Maybe Less
 07 Dead Mans Will

mclusky news

Not to be outdone by fellow Welshmen Super Furry Animals' latest vault clearing reissues, recently disbanded trio Mclusky (who threw in the towel this past January after nearly 10 years of service) are compiling a 3xCD career-spanning epitaph for release later this year.

As the band's (now former) manager explained to Pitchfork, the upcoming release will be "a three-disc set consisting of all the band's A-side singles on Disc A, all of the B-sides on Disc B, and then outtakes, rarities, live stuff, and radio session tracks on Disc C." The the full tracklist and a firm street date have yet to be issued, many of the cuts making the final pressing will include UK-only B-sides, as well as previously unreleased material, making the set a convenient one-stop package for U.S. fans.

Mclusky's manager also informs us that singer/songwriter Andrew Falkous and drummer Jack Eggleston are assembling a new outfit with former members of UK act Jarcrew. And while demos have already been cut for a possible album, he's "not sure when anything will happen on this one." Don't worry, we'll keep you posted on any half-assed supergroup shenanigans the lads get themselves into.

And finally, founding member John Chapple, whose reported squabbling with Falkous is cited as a major reason for the band's split, will also be keeping himself busy with a musical rebound-- releasing two "mini-albums" with his band Shooting at Unarmed Men. Described by their manager as "a lot scratchier and more lo-fi than Mclusky and a lot less balls-to-the-wall, but still rocking and surprisingly tuneful," the group's album is rumored to be released later this year under the title Soon There Will Be....

I have all of their albums, and I thought Welcome Interstate Managers far exceeded their other albums. Their other albums had 3-4 great songs and a lot of filler. Welcome Interstate Managers was excellent all the way through until the last three songs or so, when it tailed off. I'm expecting an album filled with B-sides and other oddities would feel like an album full of filler to me.

Starsailor Get Political
British band draws inspiration from Wainwright, Oasis on topical new album

British rockers Starsailor are wrapping up work on their third album, due for release this fall. Written in Wigan, England, and recorded in Los Angeles with producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith), the follow-up to 2004's Silence Is Easy is the young band's first politically charged work.

"Getting married and having a kid was a huge influence on [Silence]," says singer/guitarist James Walsh. "[The new record] is more outward-looking, more influenced by what's going on in the world."

The album's dozen tracks touch on war victims in the Middle East, the true account of a Jewish boy who died mysteriously after crossing paths with a neo-Nazi organization, and the ongoing Protestant-Catholic conflict in Walsh's adopted home of Belfast, Northern Ireland. This last clash comes to life on the lyrical song "Get Out While You Can," which tells of a family member's experience being bullied because of her religious persuasion.

"I'm very aware of the fact that there are people who've been living here a lot longer than me and have a much better grip on the situation," Walsh says. "But there was one [instance] where my sister-in-law came back shaken up because she'd been verbally abused while waiting for a train for being on the 'wrong' side of Christianity. It was just fascinating, coming here and your political stance and religion becoming so important to people."

Sonically, Walsh, keyboardist Barry Westhead, bassist James Stelfox and drummer Ben Byrne sought, are returning to the big choruses and raw emotions of their 2002 debut, Love Is Here. For Walsh, that meant taking inspiration from a host of critically acclaimed contemporaries. "You go into the vocal booth and think that this has got to be as pure and pristine as Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley -- but with the aggression and rock & roll attitude of [Oasis frontman] Liam Gallagher," he says. "Trying to find that balance can be like trying to achieve the impossible, but you've got to go for it."

Having just turned twenty-five, Walsh says the new album represents a more mature Starsailor, no longer burdened by being labeled the "next big thing" in the U.K. press four years ago. "It's really bizarre to be so well-established [in Britain]," he says. "At times you feel that you're not allowed to progress, but now we feel confident that we're up there with the best of them."

Holy Moly, I agree with every single thing you said.  Actually, I thought their first album had 5 or 6 great songs, and their second only a couple...

I'd be happy for a new album, but though I know there are some cool rare finds on the B-sides album, I don't need as I think much would be just okay.

From  NME (http://www.nme.com/news/113287.htm):

BRIT STARS AIM TO RECORD 'FASTEST ALBUM EVER'

RADIOHEAD, GORILLAZ and RAZORLIGHT are amongst the bands who will contribute to a new album being put together in aid of WAR CHILD.

'Help: A Day in the Life' will mark the 10th anniversary of the ??Help?? album in 1995.

The project aims to compile the best bands of this generation and give them one day to record a new piece of music, which War Child will make available on www.warchildmusic.com (http://www.warchildmusic.com) on September 9. A CD release will follow a few weeks later.

Other bands already confirmed include The Zutons, Manic Street Preachers, Bloc Party, Hard-Fi, The Coral, Elbow and Maximo Park.

War Child boss Mark Waddington said: ??As a music fan, I know what the original ??Help?? album meant and as the present CEO of War Child I know what it achieved. It was my intention that any new album we made in 2005 should match up to the feats of the past. That??s why we have set ourselves the challenge of remaking history and releasing the fastest album ever? again! It??s a tall order but we feel with the support of amazing artists we can make it happen and help a new generation of children affected by war.?

War Child was launched in 1993 as a response to the affect of the Balkans conflict on children. In 1995, 20 of the UK??s bands and artists went into studios across Europe to each produce a track for ??Help??, the fastest-ever number one album in British music history.

For more on this story, see this week??s NME, which is out today in London (August 9), and nationwide tomorrow.

Finally!!!!!

 The Detroit Cobras - Baby
 (Release Date: September 27, 2005)

 http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/album/detroitcobras/182 (http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/album/detroitcobras/182)

THE DETROIT COBRAS?? Baby throws down a groove so river deep you??ll need thigh high leather boots to get through it and so mountain high you??ll need a half pint of the good stuff to get over it. Possessing a vocal vixen at the midpoint between the nasty-girl romance of Ronnie Spector and the "don??t EVEN mess with me" growl of Tina Turner, the Detroit Cobras know how to uphold their rep as THE top shelf rock & soul band -- a thrashy, sexy powerhouse that can raise the rafters, coo and purr you into a trance, bring the Hully Gully into the 21st century soaked with sweat, and do justice to the legacies of both Motown and Detroit Rock City.

Baby is the Cobras?? third full length CD and first US release in four years. Produced in part by Greg Cartwright (of the Reigning Sound, who will also be a touring member of the band), Babygives props to the lost stars and misfits of soul??s hey day. Songs by Hank Ballard, Bobby Womack, and Spooner Oldham, among others, are roughed up with wrenches -- customized, chopped down, serial numbers filed off, and given chrome plating and new paint jobs. It??s like discovering your missing old bike has been re-built and used in a bank heist; it gives you a thrill and even makes you kind of proud.

For the US release of Baby, Bloodshot Records is including the "Seven Easy Pieces" EP (originally released in 2003 on Rough Trade and previously available only as an import) and the US debut of the video for "Cha Cha Twist."

New Broken Social Scene: More Horns, More Canadians

 By Charley Rogulewski, N.Y.

Expect more horns and more Canadians on Broken Social Scene's highly anticipated new album, which was originally dubbed "Windsurfing Nation" but will now be a self-titled affair. The set is due Oct. 4 via the group's own Toronto-based label Arts & Crafts.

It's the follow-up to 2002's breakthrough "You Forgot It in People," which has sold more than 77,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set also won a Juno Award for best alternative album.

Despite Broken Social Scene's success, no one is quite sure just how many people make up the group. Fellow Arts & Crafts labelmates like Apostle Of Hustle's Andrew Whitemen, Stars members Amy Milan and Evan Cranley and songstress Leslie Feist are revolving members. The new self-titled effort also features rapper K-OS, the Weakerthans' Jason Tate and the Dears' Murray Lightburn.

"Everyone makes a little brief cameo on the album," group member Brendan Canning tells Billboard.com. "It's like an Alfred Hitchcock film where he'd be in a scene and then he'd be gone, but you could always count on him appearing in his own film. Just because some people aren't represented on the record doesn't mean they're not part of the live show, or vice-versa,"

To record the new album, Broken Social Scene went back to Stars and Sons studio (which inspired the name of a song on the last record) under the production of Dave Newfield, who also plays with the band.

"The palette of sound is pretty big," Newfield says. Adds Canning, "There's a tiny bit more accordion, autoharp and banjo. Loads of horns. [There's] a saw that makes a half-second appearance."

The success of "You Forgot It in People" caused a lot of indecision on the follow-up, Canning admits. "Parts kept getting recorded and then stripped away and then filled again and torn down again and built up again. It was a constant process of deconstruction ultimately."

Meanwhile, the band is already a third of the way through another album slated for a spring release. "We are not going to over-think it too much," says Canning about the work-in-progress. "It's not going to be as great of a deconstruction process. The songs are bit more laid-back."

No tour plans have been announced in support of the new effort; Broken Social Scene hasn't managed a full U.S. tour since 2003.

"We didn't play more than 20 dates in America last year because we were still trying to finish a record," says Canning. The band is still debating between a full-scale tour in October and November or just three live dates in Toronto, Montreal and New York.

Here is the track list for "Broken Social Scene":

"Our Faces Split the Coast in Half"
"Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Half)"
 "7/4 (Shoreline)"
"Finish Your Collapse and Stay for Breakfast"
 "Major Label Debut"
 "Fire Eye'd Boy"
 "Windsurfing Nation"
 "Swimmers"
 "Hotel"
 "Handjobs for the Holidays"
 "Superconnected"
 "Bandwitch"
 "Tremoloa Debut"
 "It's All Gonna Break"

Precious is a really good song. It sounds a lot more like their early 80s synth-dance stuff, rather than their attempts in the 90s to be all guitary and bad-ass. Seriously, it sounds like it could be on Some Great Reward.

I've never understood the appeal of seeing track lists of news songs from an album you haven't heard yet.  Is there something telling or excitement-provoking in the titles alone?

I honestly haven't heard the album in it's entirety. I have listened to a handful (maybe 5 or 6) of individual songs from archives on KEXP, and not a single one of them did much for me. Not terrible, but nothing special. Why do you ax?

The same goes for Andrew Bird's new critically lauded album, which we do have a copy of. Thouugh I'm a big fan of a couple of his earlier albums, the new one hasn't really hit me in the gut yet.

Can anybody guess the two albums out of that list that I actually give the thumbs up to (I've heard at least a little bit of nearly all of them)? Sorry, no prizes involved. Maybe I could bring the winner back a rock or a chunk of dirt from Seattle.

Stars is one of them. The girl is ugly, but she's a good singer. What I've heard of the second album didn't blow me away as much as the first, but has convinced me that I will pick up a used copy when I come across one.

You made it too easy by ruling out the US and UK. Youth Group is pleasant rock. Skeleton Jar is pretty catchy. I do wonder if the album is too much of the same sound? Fico, do all the songs sound like the three on the web site? Here's a link (http://www.youthgroup.com.au/) if anyone else wants to weigh in.

I didn't check the link but I think the album is solid as a whole and quite pleasant...the singer reminds me a lot of Tim Booth from James...catchy pop songs well played, I believe the bassist from the Vines plays with them..there's a session from them at www.kexp.org (http://www.kexp.org)

Yes, new material.  The Red Shoes in 1993 was her last album.

Since I know you love pre-release song titles too, the first single "King Of The Mountain" precedes the album on October 24th.  And the US release is Nov. 8.

Definitely a top ten reissue... Interesting to hear the orginial John Cale mixes which were deemed to "arty" at the time.  Personally, I thought his mixes were more raw then ones eventually released, the guitar sound is much sharper on his.

??The songs on The Believer are about sex, war, love and death . . . but mostly sex,? Rhett Miller says of The Believer, his second solo album and his Verve Forecast debut.  ??Before going into the studio, I thought I??d be making a punk rock Ziggy Stardust, but I wound up with George Gershwin does T. Rex's The Slider.?

Already widely loved for his work as frontman and main songwriter of the hard-charging rock ??n?? roll quartet the Old 97??s (of which he is still a member), Miller revealed a more introspective side with his acclaimed 2002 solo debut The Instigator.  The Believer takes its predecessor??s achievements several steps further, with a dozen deeply-felt, craftily melodic tunes that demonstrate the Texas-bred artist??s knack for using accessible songcraft to address complex emotional issues.

The Believer ranges from the puckish rock punch of ??My Valentine? and ??Ain't That Strange? to the expansive art-pop textures of ??Brand New Way? and ??Meteor Shower.?  ??Help Me Suzanne,? ??I'm with Her" and "Fireflies? ?? the latter a duet with Rachael Yamagata ?? demonstrate Miller??s ability to write poignant, pointed love songs whose depth and insight are matched by their tunefulness.  The spare, thoughtful ??Question? finds Miller revisiting an Old 97's favorite from an older-and-wiser perspective.  The album??s one cover is a buoyant, barbed reading of ??I Believe She's Lying,? written by frequent Miller collaborator Jon Brion.

The Believer??s quietly powerful title track was inspired by Miller's acquaintance with the late alt-rock troubadour Elliott Smith.  ??I wrote it in New York City the day he died,? he explains.  ??It really hit home for me. I met him and spent some time with him during his last years.  My first date with my wife was seeing Elliott play at the Royal Albert Hall, and his drummer Scott McPherson ended up playing with me on the tour for The Instigator.  I had a pretty serious suicide attempt when I was 14 years old, and I've always wrestled with that impulse, as do a lot of people in my line of work.  I don't know if the song is all about Elliott; maybe it's about me at 14, I'm not exactly sure.  But the song's kind of saying thanks for doing the good work you did, and I understand that you were doing your best.?

Miller recorded The Believer with renowned producer George Drakoulias (Black Crowes, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers) and a distinguished musical cast including guitarists Lyle Workman and Josh Schwartz, bassist Salim Nourallah, drummer Matt Chamberlain and keyboardists Patrick Warren and Jon Brion, whose collective resumé encompasses work with the likes of Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Frank Black, Macy Gray, Robyn Hitchcock, Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Todd Rundgren and Elliott Smith.  Gary Louris of the Jayhawks adds backing vocals.

Jon Brion last worked with Miller as producer and multi-instrumentalist on The Instigator. ??I made The Instigator while I was homeless as a result of 9/11, and there was some stuff on there that was really raw and directly out of that experience,? Miller observes.  ??But in a lot of ways it was a very stiff-upper-lip kind of record.  Kind of like ??We love each other, everything's gonna be great.??  For me, The Believer is more confident and more based in reality.

??I thought that with George Drakoulias I'd end up making a straight-up rock record,? the artist continues.  But the night before we started pre-production, George came and saw me play a solo gig at Largo, and I did what I normally do, spazzing out, thrashing around and breaking guitar strings.  The next day, George told me that his vision for the recording was that I would be Frank Sinatra, that I would be surrounded by the greatest musicians and I could give myself up to that process. It was less a matter of me putting myself into someone's hands and more a matter of me using this system, where I had written these songs, but I was now also interpreting them, like I was Bing Crosby or something.

??With The Believer, it was very much my show.  George put me in front of a microphone in a room full of incredibly talented musicians, most of whom were already friends of mine, thank god, so it didn??t feel at all like an L.A. snow-job.  I had no guitar to hide behind, and I flourished.  I accepted the responsibility, and was able to direct the proceedings in a way that I hadn't before.?

Miller continues to balance his solo endeavors with his membership in the Old 97??s.  The still-active quartet has released seven albums since 1994 (the latest being the live set Alive and Wired) and are prominently featured in the soon-to-be-released Jennifer Aniston/Vince Vaughn romantic comedy The Breakup.

??I love to rock, but it's liberating not to always have to keep up with the freight train that is the Old 97's,? Miller says of his dual musical careers.  ??When I made The Instigator, I was constantly calling the 97??s, sending them mixes, trying to feel out how this was gonna work.  But making The Believer, I felt like I didn't have to answer to anybody.  Part of that was because I??d proven that I could do both, and part of it was because the guys in the band have been so cool about it.  After ten years, we're beyond the bullshit.  The other guys all have lives and families, so now we're at a point where we can do the Old 97??s for the rest of our lives, but we don't have to do it every day.?

??I always secretly fantasized about making the perfect record and then faking my own death, but none of my previous albums seemed quite good enough.  Now, if I disappear, you should check the beach in Bora Bora,? Miller laughs, ??Because I feel pretty fucking strongly about this one.?

Neko Case Brings the Flood on New Album

 Caroline Bermudez reports:
Sitting in a bar at three AM with other lonely souls. Taking an unfamiliar detour and winding up frighteningly lost. Nursing heartbreak under moonlight-- Neko Case's voice was made for these scenarios. The flame-haired songstress is alt-country's dark heart, the wild woman who has seen too much and will never completely reveal herself to you.

We'll get another crack at her mysteries come March 7, 2006, when Anti- will release Case's fifth solo album, Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. Produced by Case and longtime associate Darryl Neudorf, the album features a number of her previous partners in noir-drenched crime, including fellow chanteuse Kelly Hogan, country-garage rockers the Sadies, Giant Sand's Howe Gelb, and Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino. Rachel Flotard of Seattle pop-punks Visqueen, former Flat Duo Jet Dexter Romweber, and the legendary Garth Hudson of The Band also appear. Maybe they should have just gone ahead and called this album We Are the Alt-Country World.

The album apparently blends 60s pop sheen with Case's trademark lugubrious country sound. Says Case about Fox: "I recorded the album intermittently over the past couple years. With each record, you think you've figured it out, but once you get into the studio, you realize there's always more to learn. But I feel like we managed to get all my ideas to tape." She added, "I feel really good about this album." But really, who is going to admit that they feel bad about their upcoming album?

Very cool.  That album is one of my favorites.  I prefer it to Raw Power and Funhouse.

Raw Power IMO is one of the sickest, most twisted records of all time. I love the first 2 LPs, and I know that purists hate James Williamson, but I still have to stay from start to finish Raw Power (especially for when it came out) lives up to its name. It's easily in my top 10 favorite LPs of all time, no contest. It wipes the floor clean with anything released today, and that record is nearly 34 years old.

It might be time to start the Albums in 2006 thread as I'm not sure where this one will come out... CD release party was scheduled this month but has been cancelled.

Hailing from Baltimore, The Pale Stars consists of musicians from other groups coming together to present their take on Americana.  Taking the hard driving beats and melodies often associated with Americana or Alt-Country, the band then adds the reverb and effects heavy guitar sound often heard in 80s shoegazer bands.  Nice mixture if ya ask me...

"rawer and more stripped-down than Mclusky" - holy shit!!

Jon Chapple (Ex-Mclusky) Talks New Band

Jonah Flicker, Amy Phillips, and Kati Llewellyn report:
If you have the balls to break up your band when people are still pretty psyched that you exist, the least you can do is start another band. It's just common courtesy-- especially if your contribution to inner-band squabbling is rumored to be at least half the cause of the breakup. After all, musicians are our dancing monkeys, here to entertain us at our command, are they not? Personal lives and creative differences be damned! We want our rock. We want more songs than a song convention. Sing it!

Welsh primal stompers Mclusky are the case in point here. As we reported in June, bassist John Chapple is spending his post-lusky time with a new band, Shooting at Unarmed Men. Pitchfork spoke with Chapple recently and about the group's debut EP, Soon There Will Be Shooting at Unarmed Men, due this Tuesday, December 6, on Too Pure, as well as his future plans.

Shooting at Unarmed Men began its life back in 1999, when Mclusky was still alive and kicking. Their influences, according to a cheeky press release, include "a variety of British garden birds that sing in our streets, the highly addictive and unhealthy past-time of smoking tobacco, driving our polluting and fuel-consuming automobiles to and fro, drinking whiskey, working shit jobs for too little money and which hold no future prospects." We're assuming this is code for Skynyrd, cocaine, and blowjobs.

The trio's debut EP is rawer and more stripped-down than Mclusky's recordings. When asked about the Shooting at Unarmed Men sound, Chapple replied: "Some guy asked me why I recorded lo-fi for this album, and I said sarcastically that we're recording pi-fi to the nearest decimal point. I don't believe in lo-fi or hi-fi. A band sings the way they sing and somebody presses record. We did this whole recording in one weekend. Some people would say that was rushed. Other people would say that was pointless. I say we took as long as we needed to and we got what we wanted to get done, done." So... multiply pi-fi by the circumference of the record and square it to get its area and overall worth? You always wondered how we structured our 10-point rating system, didn't you.

 Here's the EP tracklist:

 01 Taking Care of Business
 02 Four Eyed McClayvie
03 When Potent Doesn't Mean It
 04 Impunity Rules
05 The Long and the Short of It
 06 No-One Can Waltz
 07 The Pink Ink
08 There's a Reason It's Called the Easy Way Out
09 This Much Is a Lot

Shooting at Unarmed Men aim to record their first full-length within the next month or so, for release in the spring. While the studio time frame is a bit shaky, Chapple has a good idea of how long the second album will be. He told Pitchfork, "Short records are good records in my book. The Minutemen never did eight songs over forty-five minutes, you know. My favorite albums are eight songs and exactly thirty minutes long-- exactly four songs a side on a vinyl. It's a perfect length for an album; it doesn't need to be any longer than that."

We didn't want to point out that Soon There Will Be Shooting at Unarmed Men has nine tracks, even though it's being billed as an EP, because we were afraid he'd find a way to climb through the phone line and kick all of our asses. He was in Mclusky, after all. Their old singer was a sex criminal!

Shooting at Unarmed Men hope to tour North America early next year, though no definite plans have been set. Chapple filled us in on the business of the band, saying, "This is a very small, very centralized project. The band handles everything outside of the record company. We book our own shows, we finance our own shows, we do everything in house, basically."

As for Mclusky, that three-disc set of singles, B-sides, outtakes, rarities, and live recordings we told you about way back when is still in the works, with a January or February release in the cards. Chapple said he has been in contact with drummer Jack Egglestone, but added that "there has not been a syllable exchanged between me and Andrew [Falkous] since I left Mclusky." Ouch! Both Egglestone and Falkous are in rehearsals with members of a "very seminal local band" called Jarcrew, though the new band remains unnamed. May we recommend "Mcrew", "Jarluskey", or, since we're already going this route, "Brunch"?

Saw Baltimore's Gavin Elder and his band One False Move this weekend and will have to say his CD "Rock and/or Roll" is a keeper.  Think Super Furry Animals , a dash of this and that but nothing  done to excess. Produced by Ken Coomer of Wilco fame who plays drums as well on the record.
