Title: Sold out shows
Post by: Barcelona on October 01, 2003, 04:50:00 pm
I thought I knew the DC's rock scene pretty well to guess pretty accurately which shows might sell out pretty fast (which helps me decide whether I should buy the tickets through ticketmaster, which I also hate). However, I don't trust myself anymore. Interpol has been announced for a while and it is still not sold out. The same thing happens with Belle and Sebastian. And I guess with Travis (although I won't go their show, don't like them). I guess shows in DC (except for Marylin Manson and a few other MTV bands) don't sell out that fast.

Yeah, but I've been surprised before.

And sometimes I just don't get it.  Belle and Sebastion sold out DAR not too long back.  Isn't that much bigger than 9:30?

I think Sleater-Kinney was a big draw for that DAR show.

Shows in DC have always seemed a little slow to sell out.  It could be lack of good radio or the fact that many people try to avoid service charges by waiting to buy tickets at the door.

I figured one reason club shows sold comparatively slowly is that everything's general admission so there's no rush to buy tickets early.  It is odd how rare it is for any show to sell out on the first day, or first week, or even first month.

You're kidding, right?  From my seat about 1/3 of the way back in the orchestra, I saw one girl singing along.  It was such an awful, awful venue for them.

But when B&S came on, all hell broke loose.  And we're talking going from bitchin' girl punk to 'lovely' dancy sweet twee music.  It was really funny, because it all seemed upside down to me!

I think you're right.  That's certainly my M.O.  Whereas, if there might be seats, I'll buy a ticket right away.

Some of it has to do with making a commitment. Not so much that people are commitment phobic but that there are often other options for the week, or even that night. And YES, those damned service charges will hold people back. I know I've often waited to buy a ticket until I could get to the box office, which isn't the easiest thing for me living out of town.

With Interpol, the novelty has worn off and most of those who wanted to see them at least once have seen them. I'm sure they'll pull a good sized crowd and probably sell out but possibly not until the night of. Honestly, I'd be surprised if Travis sells out but that's mostly because of the price of the tickets. A lot of their fans will not attend solely for that reason. I'm pretty sure B&S will eventually sell out but probably much closer to the date and maybe not until the night of.

Some of the sold out shows have fans from the radio, MTV, or other means that don't interest most of the selective Indie crowd. For one thing, it seems that the Indie crowd tend to be more Euro-centric and we are in America, which would naturally be closer to the pulse of American mainstream, therefore, selling more tickets.

Didn't they have a pre-sale and all that nonsense for the B&S show at DAR? I'm sure that had a lot to do with the early sell-out.

I had tic's for that one but couldn't make the show, so went and bought them early this time and got the gratuitous (sp?) red hot poker up the bum in charges only to find out it's not selling out as quickly this time.

I wonder what the demographics for their fans are....when I was outside at DAR giving my tickets to this gorgeous looking bird  ;)   it seemed to be a lot of college 'emo' wallies.

You hit it, Mank.

The DAR crowd, to me, seemed to be a lot of college age "emo hippies" -- girls who 15 years ago would have been doing the twirly dance a la deadhead shows, but in 2002 they're emo.  It was really fascinating.

FYI Interpol will be sold out well before the date, like probably by mid-next week,  Travis will be sold out by the end of this week, and Belle & Sebastian is getting close as well.

That has to be the coolest job EVER.  Very cool, and I love that you read the boards.  I just counted; since April 14, I've been to 28, about half at 9:30.

And Twangirl, I started going to the club in 1990, so I've been going for just a teeny bit longer than you've been booking.  So I  have to say thank you, thank you.  I should probably get you flowers, and it's not sucking up because you don't know who I am!

thanks for watching what we say!  ;)

I guess you might not like these questions, but any news on how ticket sales are going for tonight's show (Grandaddy and SFA)?

You might get a quicker response posting in the FAQ.She might not be reading the board today but somebody checks the FAQ daily I believe.

I doubt it, as the Club has emailed out a coupon for two-for-one tickets to the Sat. show.

I didn't get an email, but you can check with nkotb (or whatever the initials are!)

Yeah, Eddie checks the FAQ's with regularity, others I think just drop by when they can.  Think someone asked on the FAQs about Built To Spill too.

im so excited hes coming back, and even more excited i got my ticket... im just so confused on how people found out about this show so quickly. his last show here "the show after the show" was all over the radio and stuff and it took a few days for it to sell out. this one went on sale this am at 10, and has been sold out for a while. im happy for jt  :)

I NEED MAROON5 TICKETS!  i totally underestimated the fact that the show would get sold out and now i'm in a dilemma...those of you that actually work here, what should i do?  i'm sure there is some way (ebay?)...suggestions please!  or if anyone has extra tickets, i will gladly take em off your hands!

i don't work for the club, but my recommendation is try buying tickets the night of the show, people usually have extra tickets they need to get rid of at the door.

When I went to see Jonny Lang, I got tickets to see Fuel on October 19th. I just learn now that show is sold out. I went to concerts that were sold out by the time I got to the club. One time, I had to buy a ticket to a sold out show once. It's always best to get your ticket early instead of waiting until the last minute.

It's true, except for that damned expensive Mighty Wind show, for which I had THREE extra tickets I couldn't sell.  It was almost surreal.

Any predictions for Pretty Girls Make Graves at the Black Cat next Wednesday?  I have a work-related dinner and hope to get by, but don't want to buy a ticket in advance just in case.

I wonder if Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce have sued to get some cash out of the band name?

Efffffff.  That was my plan for the day after Teenage Fanclub. I got a hotel room for the whole weekend. Oh well, have to find something else to do if I can't get tix of craigslist.

dollars to doughnuts (your fav!) that you'll be able to snag a ticket of CL the week of the show.  i wouldn't worry about making alternate plans.

Natural LiveNation show that will have 10's if not 100's of tickets on StubHub and Vivid Seats leading up to day of show. Enjoy, Jules!

Yeah, I was thinking the same that it seems like the kind of show scalpers jump on but in actuality has nowhere near the draw they think it does. See also: Kraftwerk 2013.

I would doubt it but I bought my ticket already since I was near the club last week.
