Title: $12.25? Go fuck yourself, Tickets.com
Post by: Tom Cashel on October 06, 2003, 09:22:00 am
I was just about to order Yo La Tengo tickets.

 $9.00 service charge.

Weee-ell...okay.  Service charge is fine, even if it is nearly half the cost of a ticket.

 But then...

$3.25 to HOLD MY TICKETS AT THE BOX OFFICE???

That's out of fucking hand.  I can understand a service charge (even one that rivals TicketBastard), and I can understand a shipping charge, but a Will Call charge is outrageous.

Tickets.com: TAKE A FLYING FUCK AT A ROLLING DONUT.

Anybody know how much they charge to buy tickets from the Box Office on the night of the show?  Is there a $6 "Pass You Your Tickets" fee?  How about a "Hand-Stamp surcharge"?

For all that whining, one would think you were going to see an emo band.

You could have taken a ride on the Metro and walked up to the 9:30 Box Office and paid the $1 service charge fee instead of the Tickets.com charges.

You are in Bethesda?  Why not drive to the club.  Those fees are probably put in place by the ticket company and not the club (I really don't know), but since you can go there from Bethesda in about 15 minutes, save $10 and drive on down.

Several deep breaths later, I've edited a bit.  I direct my ire at tickets.com and not the Club.

Thanks for the 411.  A $1 service charge is perfectly reasonable.

I'll do it!  I'll drive to the 9:30 Club!    :D

By the way...just because I'm a complainer doesn't make that $3.25 chrage any less outrageous.

Your absolutely right Tom. Usually its other people bitching about it but i guess since its someone different then they feel they have to diss you. Those same people will be whining about this in two weeks.

I won't go to a show if I'm stuck with those types of charges.  I'm lucky in that I can stop by 9:30 or Black Cat super easily.  But when you're looking at paying up to 60, 70% of the ticket price in add-ons, it becomes absolutely ridiculous.

If I start hitting some of these Baltimore shows, I'm gonna be one unhappy camper.

There HAS to be a limit.  How can we do something about this?

I live in Columbia Maryland.  When I go to Merriweather I can walk if I want to.  I have to pay a friggin' parking fee PER TICKET!!!  Last time I went (Radiohead) we couldn't park in the lot as it was full.  So I paid to park in their lot and couldn't.  That is pure evil.

Plus 50% over the ticket price was other "fees".

We can stop buying tickets and going to shows, that's about the only way.

I personally have cut down my concert going by about 70% for this very reason. I'm only willing to get shafted by these legal scalpers for shows I absolutely, positively really, really want to see. For example, it was a toss-up wether I went to see Badly Drawn Boy again OR Belle & Sebastian who I've never seen. Belle & Sebastian won out. B&S are almost double the BDB show at face value, which wasn't even an issue for me. Without these fees I would've gone to both shows without question, not to mention all the other shows I've skipped this year that I once would've gone to to check out the band.....it boils down to the simple fact that if we are willing to pay these fees, then it won't stop charging them.

I dont think the 930 situation is that bad....... At least you can by advance tickets there. Its not like DAR or horrible venues where you can only buy tickets the day of the show.

Its a convenience charge, pay for the convenience of getting tickets over the phone or the internet, or save that money by going to the club and getting them. What is the problem with that?

I wonder why 930 didnt go a more simple route say, like the ottobars, where they have a flat $3.50 fee a ticket for advance internet sales? I guess it is because tickets.com supply a better service?

Nope, its just a service. Use it or not, it is your choice. As long as you can get tickets without paying the charge, I really dont see what the problem is.

Is it more convenent to go to the club and pick up tickets is is it more convienint to pay X amount per ticket for them to mail them to you. Sure if the charge got too much no one would buy tickets that way, but do you see ticketmaster going broke?

Read my earlier comment...I buy about 70% less tickets now, and over the years have gone from a season ticket holder to a 10 game plan'er to maybe one or two Capitals games per season for the same reason, so I do practice what I preach.....BUT!~ If it's a convenience charge it really should be a charge per transaction not per ticket....it's not like they mail each ticket individually now is it? I bought Bowie tickets and had to pay $14.50 for UPS shipping for some unkown reason, and I know it cost about $3 to UPS them to me....but this discussion could go on forever so it's somewhat pointless.

Ticketmaster/Tickets.com won't go broke because they feed off the passion of the music/sport event-going people.

Is that just because you have less free time and more commitments though. Patriot center is a pisser as there is no other way of getting tickets other than ticketmaster.

And that is really what I am getting at, the 930 does a good service keeping the ticket window open a lot of the time.

I will miss you at the badly drawn boy show though.... And B&S is losing out to the decemberists......

Hey Mankie -- have you ever listened to the Decemberists?

They could be your token 21st century band.  They're really quite good.

The main reason I've cut down is the service fees, so I make less of an effort to check out new bands. I work out near Dulles airport and live in Aspen Hill and don't get home till 8'ish every night, so "zipping" down to the club is not really an option for me....which brings us back to the service fees.

Patriot center is definately one of the worst venues EVER, and after suffering through Oasis there a few years ago vowed I would never go unless it was a major concert that I couldn't live without...Bowie meets that requirement. Although I admit I was thinking of passing on it because of the venue, but my wife has never seen the man in concert so that was the deciding factor.

I'm bummed about BDB too, but I had tic's for B&S last time but couldn't go....I may break-down at the last minute if it doesn't sell out so I can get tic's on the night for old Damon, but for now I'm not planning on going.

looks like I'm off to Barnes & Noble sometime this week to give them a listen.

I've been listening to my B&S albums this week to get into that mode....they really are a great band but if he was a friend I'd have togive him a dope slap and tell him to stop his fucking whinging and be a man and pull himself together for crying out loud!!!!   :D

Would Mankie, like the decemberists.....

Pitchfork likened them to an American Coral. I bet he would prefer the coral...... But the decemberists are hard to judge from a quick listen of just one song. It took a little while to grow on me. The first album and here I dreamt I was an architect and July July are fantastic. the middle of the album is slower and more awkward.

My verdict is Mankie will like the decemderists only if he buys the album and he wont buy the album if he just listens to the 30s clips.

Instead, if he has not already, he should get the coral.

That's funny -- that's a completely accurate description.  I think it's the use of atypical instruments like the accordion, and a penchant for mixing indie and traditional musical styles - something both The Coral and The Decemberists do.

I agree that ...Architect and July July are the best songs on either album, but I think that the new album is the better album.

track 8 as well " I am a legionaire, camel in dis-repair, waiting for frigidaire, to come passing" is pretty good.

I think you are crazy for prefering the second album. The first two songs are a bit of a turn off, too quiet and sparse, for me.

The coral are way more poppier than the decemberists. More like the decemberists after they had listened to the jam. Perhaps even more so with the new Coral albumn. Billy McCai, reminds me of the Jam quite a bit..... Its a bit like Smithers-Jones. I did give you that coral albumn, right?

Uh oh, then I think the Decemberists are out for Bags.  I bought a couple Coral singles, giving me five songs altogether, and they just don't float my boat.  If the Decemberists are even less poppy, I'm not sure they'll grab me.

No, I wasnt taking the piss. the coral are great in my book.

I have never heard of three dog night. A perousal of allmusic and their song highlights did not bring back any memories of ever hearing them at all.

Bags, which singles did you get?

I hear all of you about your service charge woes. I sat down on Sunday to buy a ticket for Belle And Sebastian and went I found out the services charges amounted to 9 bucks, I just cancelled my purchase. That's 1/3rd of the price of the ticket. I said, Hell No. I guess I'll have to miss that show.

I'm in Baltimore and just can't zip by the club to get tickets. I'll be down there tommorrow night for Supergrass.. so if there are still tickets for B&S, I'll get mine then.

I like them too, but the vocals and instrumentation have that early 70's vibe and remind me of Three Dog Night.  When I first played the album for a friend, onee song, Dreaming of You, sounded like a cover of a Three Dog Night (TDN) song.  My friend said it was a TDN song, but alas it is listed as an original.

I don't remember now, but I'll post later when I'm in front of my iTunes.

Three Dog Night are, to me, one of those bands like Bread and America.  I know some of their songs, but had no idea it was they who sang/played them.   ???

I dont think they were big in the UK and believe it or not I dont listen to american Classic Rock stations, unlike Mankie.

no,but the greaterst hits would be good to add to a collection if you can get it cheap.Commercial pop, with good harmonies.Just remember it's a pre punk 70's band.

Sorry guys but The Decemberists do nothing for me. They are okay but I really have no interest in them.

Markie, believe me, you've heard Three Dog Night somewhere, somehow, in someway. They've saturated mainstream culture so deeply that the whole world would know of at least a few of their hits even if they couldn't identify them. They were very big in the late 60s - early 70s and weren't bad then. Now they are pure mainstream Oldies. The only album of their's that I've ever liked was their 1st one. That damn bullfrog song drove me out of my freaking mind!!! I think it was called Joy To The World. (Chris Rock, or some Black comedian had a great joke about that song!)

I'm with you Jag.It's not bad per se,but totally run of the mill IMHO.Strange thing is that most people i agree with on music most of the time love it.I just don't see what all the fuss is about.granted,i've only heard Her Majesties, but that should be enough to form an objective opinion, unless they just changed their sound dramatically.

"Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" is a 1970 Randy Newman song, subsequently covered by TDN, Tom Jones, and many others.

Have to say, Bags, that the Coral don't really do it for me either...but I've grown to love the Decemberists.  Forget about who's poppier...the bottom line is that the Decemberists write better, more memorable songs (not just catchy-memorable, but thoughtful-memorable).  Give 'em a shot.

I think really the only way to make the fees go down is by having the venues complain that their ticket sales are going down. Prime example would be Jaxx. Jay has been voicing his opinion that if people don't start buying tickets he'll have to cancel shows. Presales determine how well you're likely to do. If your presales are 15 the day before a show, I wouldn't want to bank on the fact that 600-700 people would be showing up the day of the show simply because they didn't want to pay the ticketbastard or tickets.communist charges. It has effected people buying tickets. Sure a show might sell out the day of the show, but it keeps people away that most likely would want to go to the show but either a) don't have the time to get down to the club to buy tickets in advance or  b)refuse to pay such astronomical charges for what? A computer's job that takes less than a minute to handle? For tickets.com to charge a $3.50 "Holding" fee for you to pick up the tickets at the venue is rediculous. Besides, it's not like it cost $3.50 for them to mail it to you either so I could see a $1 charge (just like the 930 Club would do) for holding your tickets.

Seriously, what the hell has become of the entertainment industry. And they wonder why people skip out on movies and concerts and just download it...

And now I'd like to complain about goddamn Starpower moving Independent Film Channel from basic cable to digital!! aaarrrrgggghhhhhh

I hate all these awful companies.

Getting back to the orginal topic of this post---can someone (maybe Seth or another 930 club staffer) tell me why the 930 club charges a $1 service charge for their own shows at their own box office?  I think the 930 club does a good job running shows, and not that the $1 fee is outrageous compared to TM or Tickets.com, but that doesn't make much sense to charge a fee when there's no processing, handling or delivery fee.

And on the day of the show, if tix are still left, the club doesn't charge the extra $1.  So there's no way getting around paying a service fee if you want to buy advance tix for a 930 club show (BTW, MCI Center does the $1 fee at their box office for advance shows/events, but not on the day of the event).

Does anyone know why this is?

some reasons:

it costs money to pay someone to sell you tickets.  it costs money to maintain the computer equipment necessary to sell you tickets.  it costs money to buy the stock that the tickets are printed on.

if you don't want to pay $1 to guarantee that you can see your favorite artist, you can wait until the night of the show to buy a ticket with no charge whatsoever, as long as the show isn't sold out.

You should raise it to $5 and really get things going.

I've never had a problem about $1, or really given it a second thought.  I figure it's the cost of keeping the box office open noon - 7:00, when the club isn't open.

i understand the reasons for running the computer, stock, etc., I'm sure that's those are legit costs.  I think the 930 club is one of the better-run clubs out there.

but it does sound a bit like TM's reasoning (albeit they are whores and the 930 club is not). why not just build the costs into the price of the tickets?

also, it still doesn't explain why the service charge disappears the night of the show...the box office people still have to be paid and the tickets still have to be printed that night, too.

You get cheap carnival stock tickets the night of the show.

Actually, they don't print you a ticket on the night of a show.  They just give you one of those little tear off carnival-type generic tickets.

edit -- oops, Jag, didn't see your answer.  Funny we both referred to them as carnival tickets!

carnie tickets don't exactly have the same anti-forgery features that printed tickets do.

Not to mention the old "What color are the tickets tonight?" If you bought several shows you'd have to remember what color for what show!
