NKOTB, is it ok if I turn this thread into the snailhook equivalent of the "hey seth" thread?

Because I'm going to whether you want me to or not.

 Big Blood?
 Visitations?
 Ex-Cocaine?
Religious Knives/Woods again (missed last summer's show due to being violently ill)?
 PG Six?
 Carlos Giffoni again?
 Kemialliset Ystävät?
 Theo Angell?
 Brightblack Morning Light?
 Alcest?
 Anvil Salute?
 Birchville Cat Motel?
 Black Forest/Black Sea?
 Circulatory System?
 Death Ambient?
 Fursaxa?
 Directing Hand?
 Earthless?
 Voice of the Seven Woods?

I'll probably think of 20 more acts I'd like to see once I click "post reply."

I got you beat by about 2 or 3.

 Besides Alcest, I've got:

Brightblack Morning Light? (I'd love them too!)
Black Forest/Black Sea? (??? Is this Joe Lally's Black Sea or am I totally confused?)
Fursaxa? (I can help you book this one Snail if the guy is willing to come to the area.)

Unfortunately, we're dreaming on getting Alcest. I may be wrong but I don't even think he plays in France. If so, not much.

Sweetcell, you lose no points. You gain 1 for knowing Alcest.

Fursaxa is a girl.

Different Black Sea; Black Forest/Black sea is one band.

And yeah I know Alcest and Kemialliset Ystävät are next to impossible but stranger things have happened.

Wait a minute...maybe I'm thinking of Füxa but I'm sure I'm thinking of this guy I kind of know in that band... I need to go check something. Too many to keep track of!

But Joe had some band several years ago that was something like Black Sea but read recently about some kind of reorganization or something. May be totally different people though.

Edit: Okay, I was thinking of Flux Utopia. Sorry about that. Like I said, too damn many bands to keep track of.

The new Grails album (Take Refuge in Clean Living) is their best yet.

Would love to see them again too.

I'm still dying to see The December Sound.

If my memory serves me correct, a couple years ago I got them booked with Snail but they ended up backing out due to work issues and van problems.

Then I got them booked way early on for last year's Walls Of Sound Fest. That fell through fast too. Don't know why but I think they have an aversion to getting too close to the Mason Dixon line. (They are from Boston.) Closest they've gotten to date is Philadelphia.

Jake had them booked with his band, Screen Vinyl Image, in Baltimore but they ended up backing out of that one too. Well, that wouldn't have happened anyway because at the last minute The Metro Gallery cancelled the show. They 'claim' that it was due to low interest. Bullshit! Their liquor license just came through that day and they wanted to go out and celebrate with some friends so pulled any old reason out of their ass to close up shop for the night. (Sound totally sucks there anyway though the location is very good and visually it's very cool. They do book some good shows though.)

I have one of their eps (forget the name; the one with the Reverence cover on it) and like it a lot. So yeah I'll second that one.

That's the Kill Me EP. That EP sounds a lot like BRMC but their new full length, which also is good, has a little bit more of an early Spacemen 3 or Spiritualized sound to it. There are a couple cuts on my station.
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: azaghal1981 on May 03, 2008, 03:52:00 am
You know...I see BRMC talked up so much on this board but I haven't heard a note from them.

 Maybe I should.
Title: Re: Snailhook...

...and as up on the obsure as you are. (shakes head)

Not sure what you'll think of them. I like them but you might find them just a tad too Mainstream. Start with their 1st album. I'm sure you'll find something you like. It's still my favorite of theirs. Howl (their 3rd?) has more of a BRMC does their version of Americana.

You should also check out The Stevenson Ranch Davidians. Would love for Snail to book them! They just told me recently that they want to tour more but so far they haven't been able to get past the Mississippi River. Sparx will back me up on this band.

Post by: azaghal1981 on May 03, 2008, 04:29:00 am
They're just a band I never got around to listening to for no real reason.

I think I walk a good balance between the mainstream-ish and the umm...not-so-mainstream.

Snailhook, Pocahaunted would be awesome too.

It looks like Death Ambient have only played a few shows in their 13-year existence so I guess that one is highly unlikely too.

what about Wooden Shjips?  They're coming out to louisville in June and to New York in Sept.  Anyway to convince them to make a stop in DC on one of those trips?  And a second vote for Voice of the Seven Woods.

I didn't include this one because I've asked for them about 10x in different threads and in person already.
And Two Lone Swordsmen is a great call.

Definitely. Hopefully Darren from the Tyde or Rob from the Quarter After will bring them along next time they come this way. They're all from the same area and help each other out in the studio on occasion. Hell, they'd even make a great doublebill with the BJM if they could put up with Anton for the duration of a tour. They deserve to cross the mighty Mississippi.

Snail, you should try to get Hammock. I bet they will play if you ask them nicely. Maybe for that special something on the DC side that you told me about. Generally speaking, that audience knows and loves Hammock.

Side note: Just break out the extra stools and chairs.    ;)

Thee American Revolution (Robert Schneider/Bill Doss' supposedly heavy psych band) would be cool to see if you deem them worthy after catching them at Terrastock. I've no idea what they sound like; thinking it could go either way.
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: snailhook on May 06, 2008, 02:43:00 pm
ok, i'll play along:

 Big Blood? don't know them...
Visitations? i'm tight with time-lag, so if they ever tour this way, i'll book it.
Ex-Cocaine? i'm sure i'll get them if they come this way as well.
Religious Knives/Woods again (missed last summer's show due to being violently ill)? i'm really tight with religious knives; they will definitely be back in dc by the end of the year. don't know about woods, but that's likely at some point.
PG Six? good friend...will definitely be here by the end of the year.
Carlos Giffoni again? whenever carlos gets someone like merzbow or masonna to come to the states, he'll probably ask me to do a dc show.
Kemialliset Ystävät? kohoutek was supposed to play with them in baltimore at the end of this month, but the bill ended up being too full. their booker skipped on dc, but i tried to get them. maybe next time...
Theo Angell? i don't know theo personally but am a fan of hall of fame and am friends with samara lubelski. if theo wanted to play here, he's got a gig.
Brightblack Morning Light? i think they go through windish, so that means they'd be at the black cat or blowtel next time around. they were pretty good when i booked them with espers in 2006.
 Alcest? don't know...
 Anvil Salute? don't know...
Birchville Cat Motel? i know campbell really well and next time he's in the states, he'll probably play dc. BCM at 611 florida in january 2005 was amazing.
Black Forest/Black Sea? i'm tight with jeffrey alexander; in fact, kohoutek is playing with them in pittsburgh before we go to terrastock next month. since BF/BS is now in pittsburgh, i'm sure they'll come to dc soon.
Circulatory System? love these guys and know them ok, but i don't know if they have any plans to tour again.
 Death Ambient? not familiar...
Fursaxa? tara's a good friend; in fact, i'm putting out a dvd of the 2nd free folk phantasmagory with her and jack rose and samara and tono-bungay and paul metzger. she'll be back here eventually.
Directing Hand? i love alex nielson and would love to get him here. i know the volcanic tongue folks, so my guess is they'll tell him to talk to me if he ever comes to the states.
Earthless? love 'em. i emailed them in ocotber when they were here for CMJ. they are interested in hitting dc next time they are on the east coast. that might be next year or longer than that, though. they don't get to tour often.
Voice of the Seven Woods? don't know...
Pocahaunted would be awesome too. yeah, that would be awesome. don't know her personally, but i think christina carter is close to her.
what about Wooden Shjips? definitely will be playing here if they want to. i talked to them at CMJ, too. kohoutek is playing on saturday at terrastock with them, so i'm sure there will be plenty of psych-geek bonding.
the features think i saw them at the 9:30 once, but i could be wrong. wasn't really my thing, though that's not to say i wouldn't book them.
the grip weeds have only heard of them.
 the shazam don't know...
the witches or some other troy gregory project don't know...
two lone swordsmen these guys are still around? i'd book 'em.
 the red button not familiar...
Oneida playing with them at terrastock, too. they go through kork, which means black cat or blowtel most likely, unless i convince them otherwise.
Human Bell i know dave and nathan well, and there are plans to do a human bell/ultimate vag dc show and maybe even mini-tour together. they'll be in dc soon.
Nora Keyes... she is excellent. saw her at arthur fest and the bank once. would definitely book her if she hits the east coast again.
The Stevenson Ranch Davidians would love to book them...
Gown is this the gown from california that's related to amps for christ or the gown from massachusetts that plays with thurston moore in the bark haze? i like them both; kohoutek played with the latter gown in amherst last year.
Evan Miller booked him once with rac-oo-oooo-ooo-oon. he's great.
 Ilyas Ahmed don't know...
Hammock i'll book them if they can be convinced to play dc again. they seem really particular. could be a possibility for wallofsound fest.
Thee American Revolution (Robert Schneider/Bill Doss' supposedly heavy psych band) not a fan of schneider's apples material post-1997, and really not a fan of bill doss (the sunshine fix was pretty terrible at terrastock in 2002). i can't imagine this being "heavy psych". maybe it's decent psych-pop.

if you guys really want some of these bands to play here, email/myspace them and pass on my information. i can always use a little help...
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: azaghal1981 on May 07, 2008, 12:03:00 pm
Cool...thanks for going through each one.

Was referring to the Massachusetts Gown.

And I know Circulatory System do small low-key shows in GA once in a while; their last proper tour was in the fall of 2006 I think? They seem to finally be making progress towards the release of that new album though (new tracks on their myspace) so that may hopefully result in a lack of touring  changing soon.

the features think i saw them at the 9:30 once, but i could be wrong. wasn't really my thing, though that's not to say i wouldn't book them.

Hailing from Nashville they are one of those bands that are a bit garage rock a bit power pop, de novo dahl's original keyboard player is now in the band

the grip weeds have only heard of them.

 the shazam don't know...

both of these are not lame / rainbow quartz mainstays and Little Steven favs...
the grip weeds fall more in the psychedelic pop with folk leanings sound
the shazam fall in The Move/ Cheap trick power pop vein. at one point they had a bass rocked it on a 12 string bass

the witches or some other troy gregory project don't know...
Troy Gregory is best known as one of  the bass player in the Dirtbombs at moment.  He also did  stints in Flotsam and Jetsam and Prong at one point.
The Witches was one of his project when he returned to Detroit and  were a dark and heavy psych rock outfit.  Saw him once in Detroit with a fun  project called Troy Gregory and The Stepsisters.

two lone swordsmen these guys are still around? i'd book 'em.
Andrew Weatherall and co are doing this scuzzy blues vibe at the moment.  A big departure from his electronic music root.

 the red button not familiar...
Seriously doubt these guys even tour let alone do live dates.  Kinda of a LA power pop super group, with a Beatles meets 60s garage rock sound.  Was ranked by one set of power pop fans as the best album of last year.

Post by: snailhook on May 07, 2008, 02:27:00 pm
thanks for the info, kosmo. i assumed the ones i didn't know were in the power-pop/garage-rock/psych vein, knowing your tastes. funny, when i saw "the shazam", i thought of the move album, which rules.

all of it sounds good, if you know any of these bands are touring, send 'em my way...

Did you book Eat Skull recently? I'm almost sure you did but if you didn't, I'd love to see them after hearing their album that came out on Siltbreeze not too long ago.

And speaking of Siltbreeze, Naked on the Vague would be great too.
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: snailhook on May 11, 2008, 03:25:00 pm
actually not familiar with eat skull, but i'll book anything on siltbreeze. that label was my inspiration in the '90s, and i would love for tom lax to put out some kohoutek on siltbreeze. i contacted naked on the vague about doing a show in march but we couldn't work it out.
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: azaghal1981 on May 11, 2008, 04:34:00 pm
Eat Skull would be right up your alley.

 From the label's site:

"Leave it to the English to embellish a term like "shit-gaze" and in doing so codify the current DIY threadbare scrape of Times New Viking, Psychedelic
Horseshit, and Tyvek. No surprise that the greatest shit-gazer of all time was none other than Samuel Coleridge, an avowed Brit who, plied full of laudanum,
would sit for hours and stare at his bowel movements, writing copious notes on their color, texture, etc. "Monday? Oh, stool journal, to where didst thine
 weekend go?"

At any rate, it's hard to gauge how much mileage the Limeys can get with such a phrase, but cross your fingers it hangs around long enough for Eat Skull
to share in the odorous mirth. Call their genre whatever you want; Eat Skull will be ensconced in the stately pleasure-dome at Xanadu, waiting for the
 checks to clear.

Biscuit crumbs and tea stains be damned, Eat Skull are a quartet hailing from Portland, Oregon, co-masterminded by Rob Enbom (former bushwacker in the ranks
of Hospitals and Hole Class) and another original Hospital, Rod Meyer (the greatest living genius of punk). Previous Eat Skull efforts include a cassette-only
EP and a pair of 7-inches, all of which might be out of print. Like their brethren and forebears, Eat Skull runs a post pattern deep beyond pop and punk.
They bring to the game an extrasensory appreciation of New Zealand's South Island Sound (Great Unwashed, Axemen), Cleveland art-damage skronk (Modern Art
Studio, X-X), and the wretched excess of forgotten Midwest hardcore (Stiff Legged Sheep, Chemotherapy). In other words, just what you need!

Pip, pip matey, rum, sodomy, chin up and all that. Sick to Death is sure to be a lock for many year-end bests or Tom Lax's (DJ) name isn't Kublai Khan."

didn't know big blood was colleen and tim from cerberus shoal. i've booked them twice and am tight with that portland scene (i just had erin davidson of cerberus down here in october), so if they come this way, i'll certainly hook them up.

not sure if eluvium tours much. i booked him with mono in 2005. i liked him live but it didn't blow me away.

paul metzger will be here next time he tours. i couldn't help him out last fall, which is why we played with him in philly instead. i'm putting out the free folk 2 dvd with metzger on it. he's a genius.

lichens will also be around. i talked to rob lowe and told him i might be booking manuel gottsching of ash ra tempel, and he practically begged to be on that. so if i get gottsching in august, look for lichens to open, though getting gottsching is still a longshot. you never know...

Yes they are. With Black Cobra. Guess there are shows at the Velvet already booked for the 11th and 13th. Too bad; that bill would've been great there.

It's been forever since I've looked at DC9's calendar.

pretty bummed about that, actually. weedeater are my friends and they should be playing the velvet. they hated the red and the black last time and they won't like dc9. but bands go where their bookers put 'em, and their bookers don't always know better.

Wonder if Fursaxa has any open dates before or after the Brightblack Talking Head show that she's opening.

She hasn't updated her website or myspace in over a year(unless she has more than one website or myspace).

i asked fursaxa to play with john wiese and bulbs on thursday, but she didn't feel like being part of a five-band bill at a club, so she's not coming to dc. i also asked her to play the free folk fest but she couldn't come down to the area two weekends in a row.

Will Marshall Allen and/or Elliott Levin be joining Han Bennink or will it just be him or him and someone else?

Came across the Marshall Allen thing here (http://www.last.fm/event/667454) but anyone can post anything there so I have no idea as to how legit it is.

Also, will I catch any of Kohoutek Dashin Gassoudan's set if I show up at 12:30-ish?
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: snailhook on January 16, 2009, 02:20:30 am
Azaghal, Marshall is not playing the DC show.  There was talk about it happening, but we decided to keep it Han solo.  The fabulous Nathan Bowles from Blacksburg VA, who is in Black History Moth, Black Twigs and Spiral Joy Band and who has played with Jack Rose and Pelt, will be joining KDG on kit and various percussion.  John Howard (of Hat City Intuitive/Plums/Foreign Press/Spaceships Panic Orbit) will be playing kit.  We're going to start the show at 10ish.  It should be done my midnight.  See info below.

You will like to know, however, that I've formed a new ensemble called Chromatic Mysteries, featuring Marshall Allen on saxes/flute, Elliott Levin (Cecil Taylor/New Ghost/Tyrone Hill) on saxes/flute/vocals, Michael Gibbons (Bardo Pond/Alasehir) on guitar, and Ed Ricart (PRV Trio) on guitar.  We'll be playing Twins on Wednesday 2/18.  Expect some monstrous space rock-influenced free jazz.

Clavius Productions is pleased to present the first DC solo appearance by Dutch improv legend Han Bennink. This is one event not to be missed, especially for those who appreciate percussion and progressive artistic thinking. I am incredibly honored to be sharing a stage with Bennink, whose approach has left one of the strongest impressions on me as a percussionist:

Saturday, January 17
Velvet Lounge
915 U St NW WDC
http://www.velvetloungedc.com
202-462-3213
$10, doors at 9pm, 18+!

Han Bennink (legendary Dutch improv percussionist)
Kohoutek Dashin Gassoudan (no guitars!)
plus a set including a few of DC's premier improvisers

Han Bennink
http://www.hanbennink.com/

Throughout the 1960s, drummer and artist Han Bennink (b.1942) was
increasingly recognized as an uncommonly versatile drummer. A hard swinger in the tradition of his hero Kenny Clarke, he accompanied touring American jazz stars, including Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Wes Montgomery, Johnny Griffin, Eric Dolphy and Dexter Gordon. At the same time, Bennink participated in the creation of a European improvised music which evolved apart from its jazz roots. With fellow Dutch pioneers, pianist Misha Mengelberg and saxophonist Willem Breuker, he founded the musicians? collective Instant Composers Pool in 1967, with which he still performs. Since, Bennink has collaborated frequently with Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, Peter Brötzmann, Derek Bailey and Dave Douglas, as well has continued to lead Clusone 3 with Michael Moore and Ernst Reijseger.

Kohoutek Dashin Gassoudan
http://www.claviusproductions.org/kohoutek

The standard Kohoutek bio is thrown out the window for this performance, which will be the 5th all-percussion set. Joining me will be John Howard (Hat City Intuitive/Plums/Spaceships Panic Orbit/Foreign Press), and southwest Virginia's amazing Nathan Bowles (Pelt/Spiral Joy Band/Black Twigs/Black History Moth/Jack Rose). Howard is one of my favorite percussionists in the DC area, and I am pleased to have us all onstage simultaneously. Think Milford Graves' ESP record, Tony Oxley, Bennink, and Bruford/Muir circa 1973 Crimson and you're on the right track.

Me too...plus David Jackson is no longer with the band, and seeing him play double sax was always a big part of the draw of the elusive VdGG show...

You saw them last year; are Van Der Graaf Generator worth $30?

yes.  absolutely, undoubtedly, yes.  i saw them at nearfest on friday and in nyc last night. the four van der graaf shows i've seen rank as some of the very best shows i've ever seen.

they'll play for an hour and 45 minutes, which will consist of four or five new ones, and five or six from the 1971-1976 period.  seeing "the sleepwalkers" and "man-erg" live will send chills down your spine.  peter hammill's vocals are as intense as they ever were, guy evans is one of the most underrated drummers in rock history, and hugh banton still has a massive organ sound.  david jackson is an important part of the band, but he isn't really missed, believe it or not.

seriously, if you are a VDGG fan, do NOT miss this opportunity to see them.  it will be the best $30 concert you will see this year.

I enjoyed it thoroughly, Peter Hammill's voice was in pretty good shape for being almost 61..., Guy Evans is a monster, a huge drummer; and Banton is a master in organ. I wrote a review for a Chilean web site. Feel free to check it out and practice your Spanish  ;D

Was out of town for awhile which was one of the reasons I, unfortunately, missed this show. Very, very sorry I couldn't make it. Loved them since high school. One of my favorite bands back then.

Lagas, thanks so much for all the cool pictures you've been posting and for the link above. Nice article, btw. I'll have to send that site link to a friend in Chile.

Searched around in there and found some things on The Ganjas. (Walkonby just sat up at attention. ;D ) Discovered them about 2 years ago and loved them ever since. Finally got my hands on their CD Daybreak awhile ago and have been airing a bunch of cuts from it on Air Atlantic Underground Radio. Only days ago I got the rest of their works and have just started to listen through them now. Really love that band! Can't wait to get some more of their music uploaded to the station.

Thanks to your site, I can post this:

Omar Souleyman is at JBs on 11/3 as per this. (http://ticketfly.com/purchase/event/15755) Local show would be 11 different kinds of awesome.

Damn, R5's bringing Omar Souleyman to JB's?  and they're also getting Roky Erickson?  Precisely the kind of stuff I got canned for.  Go figure.

I'll talk to Rick Bishop on Friday and see if he has anything to do with this since Souleyman's on Sublime Frequencies.  My guess is he has a big-wig booking agent on Windish or Agency Group now.  I'd hate to see this at the Blowtel. The Black Cat would be rad.

Arguably the show of the year...that is, for anyone who appreciates mind-melting, life-altering psychedelia. I couldn't think of a better "supergroup" to form in recent years, comprised of three musicians and proven innovators who continually push the threshold of experimental music. Kohoutek is honored to open for them and the fantastic Major Stars, and DC should feel honored to be able to see Rangda live.

Rangda
http://www.myspace.com/calonarang
Many centuries ago on the island of Java lived the witch queen Mahendradatta. When she was exiled from her kingdom for practicing her dark arts, she took revenge by using her witchcraft to spread chaos among the people. In defeat, she was transformed into Rangda, the demon queen of the leyaks. Rangda leads an army of witches in endless battle against Barong, the force of good. When witch-gods collide, it might sound something like this. Six Organs of Admittance?Richard Bishop?Chris Corsano. Riders of the apocalypse, it?s them vs. us. After absorbing their uber-holy dynamo, you?ll be prepared to join up with these wraiths, making it all of us against?well, whomever?s fool enough to stand in our way. To evil! Rangda?s been building up behind the scenes for some time now. As label mates and members of an exclusive mutual admiration society, Sir Rick and Kid Chasny thirsted for a conflagration involving two electric guitars plus a drummer. In such an environment requiring excellent survival skills as well as composition and improvisation rhythms, who better than Chris Corsano to work the skins? On paper, this was colossal, but actually getting everyone together proved awesomely impossible, with each man in a different city sprawled across the vastness of the United States ? not to mention each man?s diverse state of mind sprawled across the vastness of inner space. And so, time passed. Chuckling, the guitar men dreamed of visiting Rangda on our world, working figures on their necks in anticipation. Finally, with the desperate recklessness of the ancient witchsoul herself, they booked a live show, followed by a studio session with Seattle sound guru Scott Colburn. Beforehand, a mere ninety minutes was allotted for the three to further discuss ideas and play together for the very first time. What would happen? What do you think happened, stupid? Of course they planted a garden of lyricism seeded with several compositions and several improvisations! Placed end-to-end, the six pieces of the Rangda saga (part the first) rock from splintering onslaught to soulful meditation and back again with manifest precision ? this was a planned attack. Unceasing battery slides suddenly into ritual form with elemental ease. The fretworks of Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny split time while Corsano shapes the air around them. Each players moves as part of the whole of Rangda, and whether surging, cycling, or in pastoral, they are never less than explosive. This initial foray flies under the banner of FALSE FLAG.

The Major Stars
http://www.myspace.com/themajorstars
Nobody shreds like Major Stars -? they probably couldn?t if they wanted to. The Boston-based sextet (led by outsider/psych record label owners Wayne Rogers and Kate Biggar of Twisted Village) packs three full-time guitarists, all of whom, it?s fair to say, play lead. While on past Major Stars records, songwriting was treated as a necessary evil, on the group?s latest, Return to Form, precision and concision prove just as important as the guitar squall.

Kohoutek
http://claviusproductions.alkem.org/kohoutek/frizz.html
"People interested in music that defies the pop song convention, music that challenges that part of your brain that lies dormant during most aural experiences, need a band like Kohoutek. This [collective] began their wildly meandering journey across the more peripheral realms of free-form psych rock a few years back and from the very beginning they seemed determined to try to cross swathes of interstellar drone, guitar squall and loose, slowly evolving improvisations of drum and bass grooves and squelchy electronics with tapestries of gravitationally flowing darkness. What we get is a sonic bag that is raw, gorgeous, loud, dreamy, dissonant and mystical at the same time, somehow managing to transcend all sorts of seemingly limited genre barriers. Dedicated followers of bands such as the Spacious Mind, SubArachnoid Space and Ash Ra Tempel will for sure want to check these cats out, with a musical style that at its best rarely goes wrong in the live setting." Roky is hip now that he made an album with those Okkervil River hacks.
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: snailhook on August 30, 2010, 05:35:36 pm
Man, every real Roky fan I know thinks that the record with Okkervil River and those live shows they did fucking blow. I saw them at SXSW and Okkervil River was WEAK. No balls whatsoever, and balls are a necessity to properly play Roky's songs. I don't even mind Okkervil River when they do their own stuff; they've never impressed me nor disgusted me. But they are simply not the right band to be backing the Rok.

I sent Mondo Drag an email asking about a DC "loft party" they had listed on their myspace set for Sunday and got this in response:
We were supposed to be playing a loft party but that just fell through so we don't have a show for the date.  If you know of anyone who can throw a party
or has a diy spot send em our way! Thanks!

John

He also left a cell number I can PM you if you can hook up something.

Britt's place would be perfect for them.

Now that The Points don't any longer have a gig on 10/31 due to the DC9 incident, you should snag them up and put them on the Zeros/Shirks bill. Would make for the best DC punk lineup in a little while.
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: snailhook on October 22, 2010, 04:32:08 am
I don't have room to add them to the Zeros show.  They were supposed to be on it in the first place but they fucked up taking a DC9 gig the same night.  The show is packed full as it is, and I'm not worried about it not drawing.  It will be sold out.

Sounds as though that was supposed to be their last gig anyway. They've broken up.

You try booking Ut?

Tempted to do that Ut>Kemialliset Ystävät weekend in NY.

Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: snailhook on October 26, 2010, 06:50:00 am
Hey Azaghal, when are Ut and Kemialliset playing? I would have 100% booked both bands had anyone asked me. When we did our No Wave tribute night for Marc masters' book, we were trying to get Dial, which is Jackie Ham's new band (and who are quite good, btw). Maybe it isn't too late to do something about it? I think Jackie lives in France now so they are probably on limited time.

And Teepo, it's too late for me to do anything about LPD (and besides, I'll be on tour with Masaki Batoh that week anyway). LPD are another band that I would have loved to book at the Velvet, and they really belong at the Black Cat or Iota or 930 and definitely NOT the Blowtel or the Red Palace. I bet they got shafted for some hipster indie rock band on Windish, or their agent just flat-out refused to agree to pay $1000 in expenses at the Blowtel. LPD sold out the Velvet back in 2005 when the Velvet was like 80 capacity.

Raphael Lyon (aka Mudboy) is an established sound designer, musician and installation artist working around the world. His work focuses on the conceptual
frameworks of living systems design and fractal organization with an interest in creating a sense of wonder and magic as a primary practice.

Samara Lubelski has split her time between Germany, where she works with the psychedelic group Metabolismus, and her Lower East Side home base, playing
and recording with a who?s who of the art-punk and freely-improvised folk scenes for she has been brewing a rich cup of aesthetic ingredients.

Marcia Bassett predominately uses guitar and vocals to create sounds that shimmer in a dark metallic buzz of sonic noise and drone, before a swift shift
into blissed out ragas or crippling, brutal, white-hot noise.

Michael Bernstein performing primarily on modular synthesizer was founding member of Brooklyn group Religious Knives formed after the demise of drone legends
Double Leopards.

Taylor Richardson (Infinity Window, Purple Haze, Human Teenager) channels the more damaged moves associated with lost psychedelic and industrial private
press records released throughout the 70?s and 80?s. The sounds emitted reveal a communion with the outsider spirit by re-contextualizing their meaning
through various processes utilizing analog systems, so as to disrupt connotations or expand awareness of secret vocabularies.

Tom Carter augments rudimentary guitar skills with unreliable instruments, cranky analog electronics, and disintegrating practice amps. He has managed to
forge his evolving ideas of complete tonal immersion (and the quest for the perfect fuzz tone) into a layered sonic toolkit of rough beauty and unrefined
proficiency.  Best known for his work with acclaimed psych-drone iconoclasts Charalambides, which he co-founded with Christina Carter in 1991, he has branched
out into other collaborations since 2001, playing and recording with long-term projects Zaika (with Marcia Bassett) and Badgerlore (with Rob Fisk, Ben
Chasny, Liz Harris, and Peter Swanson), as well as in frequent collaborations with Bay Area sound artist Robert Horton.

Dave Nuss has been an active part of the NYC musical community for nearly twenty years.  Nuss is founding member of the No-Neck Blues Band (NNCK), the longest-running
American musical group dedicated exclusively to improvisation, and has toured the band more than a dozen times around Europe, Canada, and America. Throughout
2007-2009 he toured as a member of the Japanese group The Boredoms, leading performances of 77 and 88 drummers.  Currently he is working on promotional
projects with Feral House Press (Seattle) and Process Media (LA, CA) on music related to new American religious movements.  After completing an extensive
audio-archiving project on the the Source Family and Yahowha 13 (based in Hawaii), he created the band Sabbath Assembly to perform the hymns of the Process
Church of the Final Judgment, a UK-based 70s cult.

As a founding member of The Magik Markers, prolific solo artist and collaborator, Pete Nolan?s work exists in its own space and time. Untethered to any
scene or movement, Pete?s sound has its roots in the classic psych/folk/noise underground without betraying the originality that separates a true artist
from flash-in-the-blog hype spew.

Minor Musics, a new thematic series focusing on cultural exchange, will provide visibility and exposure to micro-communities of experimental musicians from
around the world. Taking its name from Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guiattari?s Kafka: Towards a Minor Literature, Minor Musics refers to the personal diary
of a nation (as opposed to its official historiography) within which localized practices lead to the creation of dynamic new communities and innovative
forms of expression. The series will foster critical inquiry into the symbiotic relationships between art practice, geography, and culture.

Artists performing in the series will be given an outlet for the rehearsal and presentation of works to an established community of devoted NYC experimental
art supporters. By facilitating unique collaborations with NY-based artists, the series will host a cross-cultural pollination of contemporary artistic
practices and establish a formal bridge between ISSUE and a number of vibrant international communities.

Minor Musics: Finland is made possible through the generous support of the American-Scandinavian Foundation; the Consulate General of Finland; and ESEK,
the Finnish Performing Music Promotion Centre; and Luses, the Popular Music Committee of the Foundation for the Promotion of Finnish Music.

So, Ut are playing Providence and Boston but no Philly/Baltimore/DC?  New England and NY tour only, I guess.  I'll be on the road with Batoh so I'm gonna have to miss that weekend.  That KY collab thing looks insane.

The Bush Tetras actually reformed in the late '90s and I saw them twice. Those shows were pretty good if not spectacular.

Who is Buke & Gass? They must be booked through one of the pseudo-corporate agencies if Lambert is booking them, as he wouldn't touch Talk Normal with a ten-foot pole otherwise. Kuschty Rye Ergot is playing with Woody Sullender & Seamus Cater at the Cherch on December 9.

Masaki Batoh:

Masaki Batoh is the leader of the long running Japanese Psychedelic group Ghost.?Tom Rapp is a touchstone for many songs, as well as other fey folk like Nick Drake and Robyn Hitchcock. At moments, though, Batoh seems close to surpassing even such eminent sources. ?World of Pain,? at least, couldn?t be much more perfect ? from Batoh?s odd English pronunciation; to the bleak swirls of acoustic guitar, like gusts of snow seen through glass; to the false ending three quarters through, a momentary crescendo that tries to stop and then almost immediately stumbles forward again? - NoahBerlatsky/Made Loud

Kohoutek:

"The album starts gently enough, hauntingly evocative night-sounds punctured by the distant siren?s wail of approaching guitar drone led by a lone flautist. Random elements of percussion are gradually introduced as the marching army of psychonauts crest the brow of the hill, the sounds become ever more destructive, one punching at your midriff as another screws with your mind as it traces space-rock curlicues in the sky above you and then suddenly BAM! at the ten minute point or thereabouts a guitar announces the onslaught with an utterly captivating fuzz of feedbackery, there?s an explosion of sound all around you and battle commences. Side two continues along much the same improvisational freakout path throughout, charting the band?s own unique guitar-led journey through the outer edges of space-rock and hypnotic kosmisch." - Terrscope review of ?Lossless Loss? LP

Insect Factory:

Insect Factory is the music of Silver Spring, MD guitarist Jeff Barsky. His playing creates thick waves of textured sound, building hypnotic and atmospheric drone fields.

In the mid-'90s, Barsky spent several years studying classical guitar and composition at the Hartt School of Music. Since then, he has continuously played in bands and improvisational collectives, performing frequently on the East Coast of the U.S., and also in Canada, throughout Europe, and Japan.

Insect Factory live performances frequently incorporate additional instrumentation, and Barsky has also collaborated onstage with the likes of avant-trumpeter Forbes Graham (of Tzadik?s Kayo Dot), bass player Joe Lally (of Fugazi), and the DC improv collective Kohoutek, which combines elements of abstract noise, heavy rhythms, free jazz, and psychedelic rock.

Barsky also co-runs the label Insect Fields, which serves as an outlet for sharing musical projects he is involved with, as well as his contemporaries. His first proper CD, ?Air Traffic Control Sleep?, was released on Insect Fields in the late summer of 2007, to acclaim from the likes of Washington Post, the Wire, and Terrascope.

Barsky?s various projects have shared the stage with acts as diverse as Bardo Pond, Mazen Kerbaj, Peter Wright, Richard Pinhas, Acid Mothers Temple, and Carla Bozulich, and he has performed at Suoni Il Per Popolo festival in Montreal, D.C.?s Sonic Circuits festival, and Terrastock 7 in Louisville, KY.

Nice review of Thursday. (http://www.imposemagazine.com/bytes/dc-house-show-1-uncle-woody-sullender-and-seamus-cater)

She should've mentioned something about KRE and Layne but otherwise, it's good.

Another new DC-centric music blog that covers shows like this is always welcome, though.

What's weird is that there's a picture of Layne and I, but none of Woody and Seamus. It would have been nice to have some words from a new reviewer. Layne's set was especially terrific that night.

Do you know Stephanie Glass? Seems that she's unaware of Clavius Productions and the fact that I set this show up and did 611 for five years. There's obviously a direct correlation between what I did then and what Cole's doing now.

I talked to her for a bit that night but that was pretty much it. Cole did tell her that you set the show up, though. And he also mentioned that you did house shows in the past at 611.
I am almost sure he pointed you out to her when you came in, too. So yeah, it is a bit surprising that she didn't talk to you for this piece.

For those of you thinking about coming to Philly for the Sic Alps/Magik Markers show, Purling Hiss is opening. Really looking forward to this one.

Hutch, I saw David J at the nation in 2003 or 2004. It was alright, but I wasn't crazy about it. Not sure who hius booking agent is and if they demand a high guarantee. I'd book him only if the guarantee was reasonable.

Avant/Fairfax (which will be April 22/23 this year) is coming along nicely, and we've still got slots to confirm. The two intriguing headliner so far are UK folk legend Michael Chapman and obscure free jazz saxophonist Kenny Millions, who has played with Sam Rivers, Peter Brotzmann, Sunny Murray, Billy Bang, Frank Wright and many others).

Good to hear that the Purling Hiss score worked out! Guess I have two Magik Markers gigs in my immediate future.

Edit: Baltimore Magik Markers gig was moved to The Ottobar. They are opening for Lower Dens now. Not even worth attending, anymore. Markers should do an old fashion noise/confrontation set like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0NhlvKxxr8) and scare the hipsters shitless.

Grouper?

She is in Brooklyn on 4/16 according to this. (http://www.ticketfly.com/event/31187)

And how late do Rotunda shows typically run? I may have to rely on bus or train to get up there and back; it seems as though nobody else from down here wants to make the trip for Sic Alps/Magik Markers/Purling Hiss.

Yeah, Nautical Almanac and Magik Markers would have made for a fine Golden West or Bank show on their own.

Wasn't sure where to post this but decided to put it in here to make sure that you would see it, Snail, since it was from one of your shows.

Secret Shine just released a new album called The Beginning And The End which is fantastic, by the way. In my opinion, their best ever. It comes with a heavy stock photo fold-out with pictures of their various tours. At least one of them is from DC when you booked them at the Warehouse Next Door. They are standing outside of the venue. It's possible there are more but I can't tell. Very possible that the one of them with Oliver Ackermann is from there which is the first time that they ever met and saw APTBS... and, like us, the band was completely blindsided by APTBS.

Time flies too damned fast when you are having fun with music!

APTBS is scheduled to be back in the area soon but I can't remember when and where just yet. I'll probably be out of town anyway.

Yeah, I know The Ex is playing at the Black Cat. Sucks for us. Why don't you surprise me and come to the cheaper show? I promise The Ex won't have strobe lights and they certainly won't be space truckin'. And we won't yell angry political diatribes at you in Dutch accents. We'll do it in rambling stoner-speak instead. Fuck it, go see The Ex. They rule. Then come see us because we'll be a few blocks away and we won't start til after midnight. That is, if you want to miss Madrid's awesome Luger.

Saturday, March 12
Velvet Lounge
915 U St. NW WDC

$8, doors at 9pm, 21+

Kohoutek (nu-psych from beyond)
Luger (Krauty space rock from Madrid)
Caves Caverns (Richmond's best-kept secret)
PJB (aka Psychedelic Jam Band, oh yeah)

Kohoutek
http://www.claviusproductions.org/
"If I was still young and devious (not that I ever was devious, of course?) I?d be tempted to slap a United Artists label on this one, scuff up the sleeve and palm it off as a lost classic from 1971. Filed alongside a host of highly collectable Can, Man, Hawkwind and Amon Duul II LPs nobody would ever be the wiser. And that, to my mind, is no bad thing." (Phil McMullen, Ptolemaic Terrascope)

Luger
http://luger.bandcamp.com/
Lüger is setting the Spanish scene on fire. With less than 2 years under their belt and one record that came out last April they've had enough time to play all over Spain and be one of the highlights at Primavera Club 2010. They've also played in festivals such as Space is the Place (with OM and Acid Mothers Temple) or Monkey Week (Faust, Sonic Boom, Cave, Quintron, etc.).

Ruta 66, the most influential rock magazine in Spain just crowned them best album of 2010 on their January edition and their new album should be out before winter is over. Their eponimous LP is sold out and have just been invited to play SXSW 2011.

Backed by a pounding double-headed rhythm section, the mix includes organ, synth, guitar and throbbing bass lines Lemmy would kill for. Lüger's sound is heavily influenced by classic acts such as Hawkwind, Faust or Neu! so the music is provided with surpassing krautrock elements, however they sound less vintage, rather modern, comparable with the likes of Turzi, Holy Fuck or Wooden Shjips in a wider sense, drawing rave reviews in web forums all over the world.

Caves Caverns
http://www.myspace.com/cavescaverns
http://breathingcave.blogspot.com/
?...they channeled some serious Hawkwind-Acid Mothers-F/i vibes and shoe-horned a lot of sonics into a short set?Apparently the guitar player for Caves Caverns plays the keys for locals Resin Pyramid who put on another stellar opening set at the Moon Duo gig. Really interesting stuff ?well worth checking out in town if you need to get your feet off the ground.? (Mr. Atavist)

The free-form, instrumental heavy psychedelia that this Richmond band plays on their latest release, a four-song, forty-minute cassette, has many worthy antecedents. Most prominent are Ash Ra Tempel?s epic Krautrock space jams and Hawkwind?s acid-soaked biker rock. These trippy jams will pry open your third eye. (Andrew Necci, RVA Magazine)

Love the new Ex album....new singer is tamer than G.W., though....plus there's Harvey Milk at Sonar.

Also that night is Cough at St. Stephens Church (you can forget the rest, including Magrudergrind).

The Ex are one of my favorite bands.  I didn't want to compete with that show, but we're on tour, so what can you do?  I emailed Terrie Ex to get on that show, and he told me the Black Cat already had an opener, and what do you know, it's a band of ex-Dischord people.  Yawn.

Cough is good but that will be an earlier show.  Fuck Magrudergrind...most overrated grind band around.  And they're whiny as hell.  I never understood how they got so big.

Screen Vinyl Image/Plums/Buildings are at Artisphere, but you could see any of those bands any month in the year.

SPRCSS should rate more than a "yawn". They were fantastic when I saw them last month with Office of Future Plans. Much better than a run of the mill throw-away opener. Their dual guitar/female durmmer action is a perfect compliment to The Ex as well. I'm excited they were added.

Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: snailhook on March 04, 2011, 02:03:23 pm
Oh, I like SPRCSS fine; in fact, I'm good friends with one of them.  My "yawn" was directed more towards the blatant Dischord nepotism that is perpetuated within the Black Cat year after year.  Is SPRCSS a suitable opener for The Ex?  Sure.  It's also predictable.  You probably think I have a chip on my shoulder, and you're right, I do.  I once tried to book Kinski at the Black Cat and it got turned down for an Antelope show.  And Damo Suzuki got spurned for some other ex-Dischord band back in 2007.  Their loss...both shows ended up selling out.

i am extremely pissed about this.  i was in contact with their booking agent every five days about this, and i offered them a sizeable guarantee.  i can't imagine lambert offering more than i did.  they would have been perfect headliners, and now they go up against michael chapman, amps for christ, the black twigs, and others.  i'm so sick of booking agents not doing what's right for their bands.  i'm sure he's real stoked to get $5 more out of his ten percent.

would love to, but doubt i'd be able to front the money for them.  velvet lounge is being very careful about guarantees these days, and i have absolutely nothing right now to back a guarantee if i lose money.  i'll have to do some research and see who is booking them, and what kind of offer they're looking for.

yeah, that's pretty good, surprisingly for spin.  i'm pretty stoked on the new album, as it features victor griffin of the classic '80s lineup.  if you haven't, check out the pentagram album liebling did with internal void, from 2005, called "show 'em how."  it's basically internal void (who were always vastly underrated) backing liebling on some new songs, and reworking a couple of old pentagram gems.

Agree and agree.

As you and Joe know, Sonic Boom literally knocked me off my feet even before the show started! (Inside joke yet literally true.)

Definitely like SVI's new direction. It's not just full of great Psychedelic droning noises but more attention was invested into writing good melodic songs. Makes for a very good balance.

If you mean SVI, they just released their Siberian single on Fan Death Records. I've got the songs currently airing on Air Atlantic Underground Radio. Really good.

As far as an album goes, they are working on it so be just a little bit more patient.  ;)

Anyone debating about this show or just looking for something to do tonight (Fri May 6th) should try to get out to this show. Ghost Box Orchestra is a pretty cool Psy Post-Rock band. i do not get noise.  seems to me like the type of "music" (term used loosely) you make when you don't have talent and/or don't know what you're doing.  plugging a power drill to a microphone and letting a guitar distort freely in front of an amp isn't impressive to me.

i was in a noise band once... when i was 14 and we had just bought instruments.  we thought we were awesome.  eventually we learned power chords and snare-kick combos, and we upgraded from "noise" to "punk" ;D

seriously tho, there are very talented people who make noise in a very purposeful way - merzbow comes to mind.  but far too much of the noise i've come across are people yelling incomprehensibly into a mic with a lot of white noise in the background.  it's like interpretative dance - there is some amazing stuff out there, and there is a hell of a lot more attention-seeking hippies throwing themselves from side to side.  like my 14-year-old self, i'm sure they're enjoying themselves.

Post by: azaghal1981 on July 08, 2011, 10:24:02 pm
The "few great artists, mostly crap" line can be attributed to every musical genre, no?

But with noise, I think the vast majority of it is made for the moment for both the performers and the audience in attendance; something that more often than not, if documented, does look and sound pretty stupid out of context. You did say you enjoyed playing and experimenting with instruments when you got them. Doing random things with instruments, musical and otherwise, just to see what sound they would make is fun.  The people profiled in that doc also seem to be having a great time as do the audiences. Some people just like being hit over the head with sound regardless of whether it is coming from a drill being taken to a mic, guitar feedback, a small explosion, concrete mixer or sheet metal being ground (Faust would often do this). It is something that definitely needs to be experienced live (and maybe you have done so already) before being discounted completely.
Title: Re: Snailhook...
Post by: snailhook on July 11, 2011, 11:14:38 am
Ditto what azaghal just said.  Sure, there are lots of "bad" noise acts out there, but at least they're doing something to attempt to break standard musical form.  The best noise is as exhilarating and inspirational as anything out there.  It certainly takes talent, intellect, and emotional capacity to sculp sound into something provocative and appealing.

Azaghal, when you refer to OTC, do you mean Olivia Tremor Control?  I do not have anything confirmed at the Rotunda in the coming months but I'm sure that will change soon.

Clavius Productions presents a night of bone-crushing riffage and bludgeoning psychedelic sludge at the Velvet Lounge. EYE, from Columbus, features Matt Bailey of the late, lamented Teeth of the Hydra, who Kohoutek had the pleasure of playing with in Philly years ago. Their tourmates and Columbus brethren, Lo-Pan, update Kyuss desert rock with a healthy dose of Midwest aggro attitude. This is Kohoutek's first DC show since opening for Roedelius in October, and probably last til the spring, so get your fill of pummeling space boogie while you get the chance.

Kohoutek

?People interested in music that defies the pop song convention, music that challenges that part of your brain that lies dormant during most aural experiences, need a band like Kohoutek. This ensemble began their wildly meandering journey across the more peripheral realms of free-form psych rock a few years back and from the very beginning they seemed determined to try to cross swathes of interstellar drone, guitar squall and loose, slowly evolving improvisations of drum and bass grooves and squelchy electronics with tapestries of gravitationally flowing darkness.? (Mats Gustafsson)

?If I was still young and devious (not that I ever was devious, of course?) I?d be tempted to slap a United Artists label on this one, scuff up the sleeve and palm it off as a lost classic from 1971. Filed alongside a host of highly collectable Can, Man, Hawkwind and Amon Duul II LPs nobody would ever be the wiser. And that, to my mind, is no bad thing.? (Phil McMullen, Ptolemaic Terrascope)

Lo-Pan

Talk about grabbing the brass ring when it comes within striking distance -- Columbus, Ohio's Lo-Pan waste not an ounce of opportunity to impress with their first new album for Small Stone (and third overall), Salvador, which truly brought new hope of "salvation" to the stoner rock masses upon its release in early 2011. Yes, the promising signs were already quite evident on the group's sophomore opus, Sasquanaut (reissued just prior to this third LP), but on Salvador, Lo-Pan achieve a fluid balance of guitar-driven muscle and songwriting immediacy that amazingly leaves its predecessor sounding somewhat unfocused by comparison -- and it was really anything but. Yet such is the power achieved by steel-plated nuggets like "El Dorado," "Deciduous," and "Chichen Itza," groove-driven efforts like "Bleeding Out" and "Generations," and even histrionic slow-burners like the seriously psychedelic "Bird of Prey" and convincingly bluesy "Struck Match," where Lo-Pan's remarkable singer, Jeff Martin, eerily sounds like a reborn Joe Lynn f**king Turner?in the best possible sense. It's ultimately that old-school sensibility and recurring ties to classic rock of the 1970s, wed to a modern sonic power standard, that fuel and freshen Lo-Pan's material to oftentimes alchemical, transcendent thresholds, and should allow them to stand out from the herd in today's crowded heavy rock scene. EYE

Unbeknownst to most of the world, the little burb of Columbus, Ohio has been the epicenter of metal?s evolution for nearly a decade now. At the beginning of this new wave, there was a triumvirate of bands spanning the spectrum of heavy vibes: the epic virtuoso sprawl of Deadsea (who still exist), the visceral thrash of Teeth of the Hydra, and the freaky psychedelic low-end theories of Pretty Weapons. Though each represented their own charged statement as separate units, this cabal of musicians seemed to thrive as alchemists of metal?s core elements, constantly experimenting, collaborating and pushing each other towards a transcendental summit. It has never been the want for innovation or hipster trends (you won?t find odes to black metal or irrelevant growling) that have propelled them up that mountain as it has been the drive to align the spheres that dominate the genre into one pure and mammoth equinox. It was only matter of time before they joined forces.

EYE arrives as Columbus? latest supergroup, a trio consisting of bassist Matt Bailey (formerly of TOTH), guitarist Matt Auxier and drummer Brandon Smith (both of Pretty Weapons), who rightfully go above and beyond that peak with their self-released debut, Center of the Sun. At nearly 20 minutes, the title track alone would have sufficed as a perfect example of the exemplary evolution that has manifested in Columbus. The trio?s scope is massive and it?s no surprise that Adam ?Smitty? Smith (of Deadsea), who produced the record, also contributes organ, Moog and Arp to accentuate this infinite journey; his band?s Desiderata has become a foundation for this blend of cinematic metal exploration. Within that course, EYE locks the listener into a strand that incorporates everything from Floydian dark space and darker moons, the spastic improvisation of Amon Duul?s Yeti, some effects dabbling befitting Goblin soundtracks, and plenty of shreds just to keep your pulse at a maximum. Of course, any metal band who runs the gamut of influence (with Sabbath always being the bedrock) is subject to comparisons, but with much of today?s heavier heroes (Mastadon, I?m looking at you), the results of such meddling leads to disjointed, usually overdubbed garble with no clear intent. EYE can pride themselves on laying most of Center of the Sun down in one take, which makes the complex fusion changes of ?Rik Rite? something to behold. It?s there that the trio shows their chops, splitting hairs between the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the deep grooves of Iommi, Butler and Ward. Having seen EYE perform a number of times, it has become evident that these four songs have become a foundation of perfection. Each time they play live, they strive to make it heavier, more profound, than the last time. If there ever was an anthem for EYE, it would be the ominous march of ?Ursuper,? a synchronized headbang that becomes ingrained into the conscious as a sort of aural call-to-arms the more times you hear it.

As omniscient overseer, Auxier leads EYE through a number of insurmountable cosmic valleys and crag-filled sonic terrains with his guitar leads. It?s his forward vision. Even when he looks back to the scratch-riddled records of his cool uncle?s record collection, there?s a movement and a layer you didn?t notice before. The nuance and elaboration of those dominating spheres take on strange formations and deafening power. I?d like to think of Center of the Sun as its own towering monolith, surely to be eclipsed by Columbus metal?s next giant step. Whether that?s another EYE record or a further evolution is anyone?s guess. (Kevin J. Elliott, Agit Reader)

And they are no longer conflicting with Clang Quartet/Dementia and Hope Trails. That show was moved to Sunday.

It will be one Velvet gig where the DJ downstairs will not present a problem.

Attendance might be good. DC does have a solid metal crowd.

That's good news about Clang Quartet moving to Sunday. Both Kohoutek and Ambition Burning have a bunch of Northern Virginia friends who were going to be at that show. I think attendance will be ok for this one, as Kohoutek hasn't played in DC since October, and Jesse from Lo-Pan is from Bethesda and has a bunch of friends who always come to see him play. Anyone who is into High On Fire, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Melvins, Kyuss, Neurosis, etc, should see this one. We're going to be our usual spacy selves but with a much heavier bent. I'm trying to get some projections but not sure if I can wrangle some up.

The DJing downstairs will absolutely not affect anything except possibly the path to the bar. Vic from Kohoutek is actually DJing that night and will be on double duty as he will be joining us on stage.

I don't have much planned in the near future for DC shows, except for Richard Davies (of The Moles/Cardinal) in May, most likely at Velvet with KRE. Tried getting Codeine but they don't want to do DC or Philly.

Looks like the Clang Quartet thing is Saturday. Regardless, I am happy it was moved. And yup that alone will help attendance greatly. Probably 20-30 people there that would have not gone to Velvet and most likely will be there now.

Did you still need that info? I found it on the Grimes last.fm page for the venue in question. It is in the Copycat Building.

Why the need for so many names for the same place?

How about Alvarius B? He probably is planning on playing a few shows while on the east coast for Hopscotch Fest.

So this bag of dicks Lambert claims that before he came around, the 930 and Black Cat were the only people bringing in touring artists. Just one of many gems here. Enjoy! ;)
