Title: any news on hfstival this year?
Post by: andyrichter on March 28, 2002, 07:34:00 pm
i know, i know, whfs sucks horeshit.  in fact i don't even listen to radio anymore.  but hfstival still manages to put out a great lineup of bands every year(green day, sevendust, nothingface last year and ratm/stp/deftones the year before) for a good price.  is it going to be 2 day again you think?  i'm betting it is b/c last year i think they almost sold out both days at rfk.  i would love to see foo fighters and system of a down there.  i see that stone temple pilots are on tour this spring.  i would seriously crap my pants if stp is announced.

RFK has May 25 and 26 scheduled for a "concert".  So more than likely it is the HFStival.<P>They will never top the lineup they had in 2000.  STP  (http://www.930.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)

stpmatt, you're right.  hfstival will never top 2000 when they had stp followed by ratm.  talk about a 1-2 punch.  that was an incredible night.  i remember feeling sorry for stp b/c they had to play right before ratm (i think even scott was saying how scared he was about going on before ratm) but i was fucking blown away by their performance. ratm was wicked too but i thought stp just edged them in terms of the set of the night.

It wasnt just STP and RAGE, the majority of bands on the main stage were pretty good.  HFS is thinking that 2 Days will be "bigger and better" but truth is, it is slowly going down hill.  They failed to sell out the 2nd day last year.  <P>Its quality, not quantity, and currently IMO, there are no good bands out there that are big enough or good enough to headline an HFStival that havent already done so.

As long as Tony Bennett doesn't decide to make an 11pm cameo, it should be a good year...<BR>2000 was a great year, but I also think that 1995 (I think...maybe 96?) was a GREAT year.  It was one of the first years they actually had a solid lineup of good bands.

I think the last good one was the year the Ramones played (95? 96?)  The best one was the first one (89? 90?), at Lake Fairfax with Jawbox, Tragically Hip, Pursuit of Happiness. I didn't think last year's was even worth attending and in 2000 I just went at the end to see RATM.<P>I'm not into the new HFS style, so unless they have a surprising lineup, I doubt I'd go.
Title: Re: any news on hfstival this year?

good point matt, i can't really think of any real big headliners for this year that haven't already played hfstival before.  i think a beastie boys or a pearl jam would sell out but none of the them are touring right now.  and you're right, the sheer number of bands alone doesn't make up for the lack of quality of bands.  i only went to the first day last year b/c there were 4 bands i had never seen and really wanted to see (green day, sevendust, nothingface, guttermouth) were there.  but the rest of the lineup was weak and day 2 had a horrible lineup.  we'll see in a couple of weeks.

It's so sexy when men talk about how they were "blown away" by someone's performance, as if a concert were supposed to be some sort of Scwartzeneger movie, or perhaps a porn movie.

The 2000 show was great.  Cypress Hill, Bloodhound Gang, Godsmack, STP, RATM, and a bunch of others I can't even think of.  I was 'flabbergasted'.<P>It's going to take a lot to top that.

Personally, I prefer Camden Yards. But I think stadiums are for sporting events, whereas music should be seen in clubs, or maybe at an outdoor festival.

I liked Lake Farfax for a big venue, that or Charlestown, WV (other than the cops pulling every out of state car over).  RFK has only sounded real good once with Pink Floyd, otherwise it is real echo-y and muddy sounding.  I hate PSI Net stadium, you have to sit slightly angled as they made the seats too narrow for the average sized man.  Don't know anything about this years show, but I think the first was 89, right before Lollapalooza came out to Lake Farfax.

HFS 95 had to have been the best.  Shudder to Think, Archers of Loaf, Juliana Hatfield, Scarce, Hum, Mike Watt and the godamn almighty RAMONES!  It was wonderful, right after Soul Asylum (gag) wrapped up their set 30,000 people rushed out of the stadium,  I guess they forgot about the Ramones.  The cool thing was that the 30,000 or so that were left were all really into the Ramones set.  The Space Ghost intoduction made it even more perfect.  Too bad they didn't get to play a full headlining set, but I got to see them one other time before they called it quits.<p>[This message has been edited by sarcastro (edited 03-29-2002).]

I used to listen to HFS exclusively for about 10 years then they turned into a teenie bopper station about 5 years ago or so....zapped it right off my memory button. The festival went down the poo-hole at the same time (IMHO) The station sucks bigtime and it's a shame because it used to be brill....I miss the festival but the line- ups are witness to how sucky they are...can't get any decent bands to show up anymore (again IMHO). The last one I attended had Beck in the line-up which was the last straw for me......watch them have a good line up this year just to make me look like a lier..<BR>

Massive Festival concerts are not my thing. Just too much of a bitch to have to put up with. Besides, HFS has sold out to the teeny booper baby punk crowd both on air and at the Festival. The concerts are only keeping inline with their fan base, which is really how it should be. Too bad that they don't care about what we want to see or hear. We're all just hoping and praying that they or some other powerful station will put out something good in the Indie vein.

I wouldn't miss HFS for anything.  And to tell the truth, I'm not too keen on the HFS "sounds".  But for one low price, I get a chance to experience these bands that others are talking about and see for myself.  I just look at the nutcracker in December.  I basically went to see Coldplay again, and my wife likes Pete Yorn's sound.  But in the meantime we saw Blink, System of a Down, Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, and a few others.  I don't care for most of those bands probably because I don't have a nose ring and don't wear black eye shadow, but for about 4 bucks a band....?  Same with the outdoor show.  So when some young punk asks me about this band or that band (referring to me being "over the hill"), I can say "yeah, I saw them."  For that reason, it's worth it certainly.

i'm gonna have to disagree with you there rhett miller on system of a down(but not puddle of mud).  i know hfs plays a lot of crap.  heck, i'll even say the majority of music they play is crap.  but the bands that they do play that i think do deserve the credit and accolades is system of a down.  these guys are head and shoulders above all these bands in my opinion. these guys will still 5 years down the road be making great music.  and you can't really group them into the whole rap-rock nu metal fad b/c they're unlike anything else i've heard out there. just curious and don't bite my head off or anything for saying this, but have you actually heard any other songs besides chop suey and toxicity?  the rest of their album is amazing and their self titled album is better.  if you did listen to it and you still think its crap, then fine.  i won't bother you anymore on this topic.

Maybe it's just an age difference thing, And. I was listening to loud, unmelodic stuff like Ministry when I was 21. I was saying the same things about them that you say about System. Now that I'm close to 35, it's just painful to my ears. How old are you? I bet you won't be listening to your System of a Down cd's when you're 35.

If that's what somepeople are into, that's their choice.

Andy, just be happy (for whatever reason you choose) that you, Rhett and I won't be fighting for the same tickets. I will agree that System of a Down are better than Puddle of Mud, but I would not play a free CD myself. Just not my taste. If I do run across any freebies, I'll keep you in mind.  (http://www.930.com/ubb/smile.gif) Doubt if we'll be at the same shows though. That's okay, we both deserve a chance to see each of our faves.

THe "alt-country" genre tag didn't even exist 15 years ago. When I was 21, I was listening to Steve Earle, Jason and the Scorchers, Lucinda Williams, etc (what would later be called alt-country) right along side Ministry, NIN, Front 242, etc. And to be honest, I didn't really know any 35 year olds, though I so so desperately longed for a more experienced, older girlfriend to teach me the path to musical ecstasy.

hmmmmmm, I would rather hold on to my money and not have to sit through bands that I can't stand.  That seems pretty silly to me.  If you don't like their videos or radio songs, why would you want to fork over your hard cash just to be able to tell some young'n you saw Tantric?  I'd rather go see bands I want to see, especially if the ticket price is so high.  If you only go to see live bands two or three times a year I guess its not so insane, but still, why shell out good money to be miserable?

true, true.  i'm 21 and when i'm 35, i probably won't be listening to my old system of a down cd's or even what the kids at that time are listening to.  i guess age is already catching up to me b/c i can't stand all the korn's, papa roach's and linkin park's that all the kiddies are into these days.  system of a down is just one of the few "new" (soad has been around since 97 i think) bands that i really like.  i like them because they actually have a lead singer who can sing, doesn't rap, and deliver great messages (issues like history of armenian genocide to the injustices of the prison system-not ratm political but still active).  they don't have any "poor me i was abused as a kid" songs which makes most acts these days seem to focus on.  instead of listening to these new bands, i'm getting into more old school punk like ramones, black flag, clash, minor threat, etc.  by the way, ministry is great.

Money and work are a bitch! I miss too many shows I WANT to see because of these and a few other reasons and I'm not about to pay to see mostly bands I have no interest in. If I had free tickets, I may show up just for the heck of it and maybe be surprised. Yes, good points were made for that. It's the same when I go to see a band I like and someone I don't plays with them. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised or can at least force myself to appreciate the musicianship or the efforts and energies. <P>What's much worse is when you pay good money to see someone you really like and the show sucks!

SOAD and POD seem to be the only nu metal bands that I can take even the least bit seriously.  They kind of have that Quicksand type of feel to them, I don't love either of those bands, but they're a few radio bands that don't totally blow.

I still like to listen to some of the old school punk stuff you mention, though it wasn't as "old school" when I first heard it.<P>   Here's how old I am...I plucked two WHITE nosehairs out of my left nostril this morning, and a good deal of the whiskers in my goatee are white.

hfstival it was i believe close to $45 last year, so you're right stpmatt, $50 is not out of the question. and no doubt there's probably going to be a good chance p.o.d. co-headlines this year.  i think i'm too old for this.  little girls flashing their "breasts", football player jocks fighting, i mean, "moshing" to the bizkit, "show me your tits" chants from loser pimple faced teens looking for a feel, $4 for water, and most importantly(and that's why we all frown upon hfs) the shit "alternative" rock bands(boy don't i know how to use them quotations)

I still listen to a lot of music I got into as a highschooler (15+ years ago now), I guess I had good taste.  No seriously, I went to HFStival when Chemical Brothers headlined and it sucked.  They were rioting on the field since they barracaded a section of grass and people just kept trying to go through until chaos ensued.  I guess I am too old for the senseless destruction.  Left before the Chemical Brothers came on to go to free beer at the Baltimore Brewing Company.  Saw the Bro's at the 9:30 that week, they were great there.

Ok, I'll admit it, I went to one HFS Fest. Can't remember the year (94 maybe?) I just remember INXS was one of the crap bands playing. I don't even remember who the bands were that I liked. I do remember the sound being so bad where I was sitting, you couldn't understand a word of the music. And seeing any band in a stadium is a waste of time. As I said, stadiums were made for sports, not concerts.

I swear that it used to be like $5.  Super cheap.  That made it worth going to for 1 or 2 bands.  Had to go one year to see Velocity Girl play in RFK.  They did a great set.  Left before INXS came on stage (it rained too).  That year they had Mathew Sweet, Iggy, and other great acts.

I thought that they were something $.99! Could be wrong. I've never been to an HFStival. Hard to say. I know a lot of their early shows only cost $.99. In fact, the earliest shows were FREE! This was back when they had them in places like Glenn Echo Park. Of course, I'm kind of confusing them with the free shows put on by WGTB, but HFS had them too.

I did see a 99 cent HFS show at 9:30 club a few years ago. It featured a double bill with the great Beth Orton and alt-country babe Kelly Willis. The irony is I don't think either of them ever got any HFS airplay (maybe one Beth Orton song...wouldn't know for sure, as I don't listen). Kelly sarcastically thanked them for "playing my music"...she pparently gre up in Annandale and commented on what a great station they were when she was growing up/

My only beef with HFS is that they used to be a leader in finding new music and now they are a follower.  At one time they would stop playing a song if DC-101 picked up on it and find either something new or another track by the same artist.  Now, 101 and HFS are the same.  I understand it is a business, but if every station goes for the exact same market then they all can not thrive.  I know there is music that is popular and "alternative" (gads I hate that word) that I don't like but anything that is going platinum is not alternative.  It is sad when they don't play the music that they do shows for (a classic was years ago having a DJ come and open the show and get booed off the stage).

We really must watch our step before we board the "stereotypical" train.  Just because a band is selling millions of albums doesn't mean we throw away the cd.  Aren't we limiting ourselves?  Maybe it's a general rule of thumb that when big dollars come knocking, the original incentive to make the music dims... but not always and not always with disasterous effects.  Don't get me wrong, I know where we are all coming from when complaining about Puddle, and POD, and INXS, but this still isn't Britney, NSync, etc.  Another thing... I like certain aspects of stadiums.  I remember years ago standing 10 row from the stage at Giants Stadium with my back to the stage at a U2 concert and just mesmorized by all the people.  The place was packed, singing in unison.... I don't get that feeling at a club.  But of course clubs are better in other aspects.

I think Puddle of Mudd might be there this year.  Cause I was listening to HFS and Rob Timm was talking and saying how they were so good at the Nutcracker and HFS would love to have them back, but he was saying it in a way like he was implying that they would be there.  Personally I think it would be cool if Nine Inch Nails headlines this year.  Imagine this scenario:  It's been raining all day, then stops right before Nine Inch Nails comes on.  It's dark and steam is rising from the field.  The protective matting on the ground is ripped up like always during the headliner, and since it's been raining all day, Mud everywhere. The whole place explodes when NIN comes on and after the set everybody is dirty, sweaty, and covered in Mud.  How cool would that be?  I think the Chili Peppers and Korn are coming out with new stuff soon.  It'd be cool to see 1 of them headline HFStival.  I've been to he last 3 and they've all been good IMO.  Last years was my fav.  It was the 1st time I saw Green Day.  They were fucking awesome.  2000, wasn't that great IMO.  I was all rainy and coldand I lost my shoe, so I just wasn't into it.  Not to mention I hate STP with a passion.  They suck so much ass it's not even funny.  By the way-Who's idea was it to put them on Family Values with Staind, Linkin Park, and Statik-X.  They just don't fit in well with those other bands.  And finally, am I t only 1 in the world who hates System of a Down?  I mean I saw them at the Summer Sanitarium tour, opening for Metallica, and they were horrible.  I usually get into the pit at conerts, but they sucked so much that I just sat in the middle of the field waiting for them to end.

2000 was cold and raining but still the lineup was the best i've ever seen.  they had deftones, staind(this was before they blew up), filter, godsmack, cypress hill, stone temple pilots(i love em) and rage against the machine.  last year, i only went to day 1 just to see green day who were excellent.  it was like woodstock during their set where people ripped off the plastic covering on the field and were crowd surfing on them.

What I dont like about HFS radio shows these days is just how they set them up? They give each band a certain amount of set time. I was under the impression at the HFSmas that Blink and SOAD were the headliners and that was the reason I wanted to go because I figured they would be playing close to an hour long set each, but instead they made it so that Crystal Method closed the night and the longest set was like 45 minutes and that was Blink's. I remember when I used to go to the HFStival year after year and it was cool because at least you were guranteed that the major headlining band would get a decent set time but not anymore. There are only few bands I would go to the HFStival to see, and I doubt HFS is even smart enough to put them on the bill. My two cents. Anyone that goes, I hope you have a fun time, just kind of not my thing anymore. I will admit though 2000 HFStival was great. Deftones, STP, and Rage. Now that was a good line-up. There were several other bands I liked a lot but those three stood out the most IMO.

What I really wish they would do is get some more "sane" bands and put them in the afternoon slot.  There is a time for moshing and not a time for moshing.  I found my way within three feet of the stage (actually the fence) for Coldplay last year only to see very little and get kicked in the head a half dozen times.  Now when Incubus and Green Day were on... so what!  But they should put some more effort into appealing to more "diverse" fans.  And then assure that those fans can enjoy themselves.  Rather than putting a band like Coldplay (for instance) right before a Korn (for instance) why don't you put all the less rowdy (more musical) groups near the beginning of the day in one block.  It seems they did a little better at the nutcracker by opening with Pete Yorn and Coldplay... but it was a short night and that just allowed time for SOAD fans to get warmed up.  Probably no way to rectify this, but... that's my two cents.

They did however held tentative dates for PSINet and RFK for over a year.

The same complaint has gone on since the second Lollapalooza when it grunge city.  I like the diverse shows, and am slowly going away from festivals because they are (1) too big for me (2) too short of sets (though it works well if I don't like a band) (3) never sound that good and (4) I don't mosh much any more.  I agree that it would be better to have the day start with some mellower bands and work up to a mosh, but I really would prefer them to just have heavy day and light day.  Then you could go and not worry about some git not knowing how to crowd surf kick you in the head.

I guess I didn't see the Lillith Fair connotations in my original post.  Still, if there is no reason for someone to come for a mosh (no heavy bands) then hopefully it will be a more palatable affair.  Imagine wine and cheese on the grass at RFK (just like the early HFStivals where we would park and have a car full of scotch).

Yeah, it would be a pretty good idea to put all the mellow bands 1st and all the harder bands afterwards, but keep in mind the radio station and organizers have to work around the bands schedules too.  Cause all the bands have busy schedules and in the spring a lot of radio stations have festivals like HFStival and the bands ll have different set-times at each 1.  So a band might have to play and early set and get on the road t make another date, or if a band is playing late the next night they can play a late set the night b4.  Not 2 mention you gotta consider the popularity and longetivity of the bands.  I mean you wouldn't put U2(a mellow band) along with all the mellow bands in the begning before say Linkin Park.  That would just be wrong.  It would be disrespectful to the older bands.  Anybody understand what I'm saying?

How much savings is there typing 2 instead of typing to?  I was thinking mellow day not just time.  Also, I doubt many bands play two festival shows in a day, very few bands play two shows a day period.  Too much chaos.

I understand Synical101, <P>" in the spring a lot of radio stations have festivals like HFStival"  <P>because every radio station like HFS in all major markets are owned by one of two companies and they all have these huge shows that make it sound like they are unique from the other 20 stations which have almost the same exact same crappy lineup. <BR>And kids from far and wide think, wow THEIR station is really cool because they got "fill in the blank" for their festival while "fill in the blank" is playing 15 other shows exactly like it.  GOD i hate the state of radio today.

with them not being focused on their music that must be the reason these other stations have jumped passed them in ratings.  why would you put eminem on your biggest show of the year?  get a band that you actually play!  damn, you'd think they could at least get that right.  i feel sorry for my buddy that works there.  he used to be a fan of the station and he doesn't even listen to them anymore and he works there!  yeah, rhett, when are they gonna get a station for the 30+ crowd that actually sounds good?

WRNR in Annapolis (which was started by the guy who originally founded HFS before selling it to the corporation that owns it now) used to be good. Some might argue that it didn't have enough indie rock to keep the hipsters happy, but it did feature alot of stuff that wasn't getting played anywhere else on local radio. But then WRNR was sold to a corporation a couple of year ago, and now all I see on their playlist is mainstream crap like Mick Jagger, Dave Matthews, Natalie Merchant, Train, Elvis Costello, Rusted Root, etc...yuck...and they only play the hit single now where they used to be all over the albums.<P>   Oh well there's still the internet!

my thoughts exactly stpmatt.  i mean, eminem?  jesus christ i hate that boy.  and goldfinger.  when's the last time they played them?  96?  by the way, that lineup sucks big time and the only few bands i'm interested in are the aforementioned goldfinger(very good live), unwritten law and papa roach(sue me, p roach has a couple tunes i like and they're a good live band).  dammit, we need stone temple pilots or tool or foo fighters.  eminem?  wtf?

As the resident massive Idlewild fan, I'm happy to hear that you all like the new song. (Wait until you see it live!) Supposedly, Idlewild will be appearing on XFM radio tomorrow from 7-9pm. And on a somewhat related note, the new (for us) NME is on the shelf -with the Doves track on the free cd (and an Idlewild article).  The Doves song has me excited for both their album and tour.
