Title: Yet Another Just Announced Commetary Thread
Post by: kosmo vinyl on May 14, 2009, 11:53:42 am
Re: The Popularity of Blink182

Mark Hoppus has 450K worth of followers on Twitter and if he tells them all to twitter "AlligatorFarts" it's guaranteed to become a top trending topic very quickly.

Doesn't surprise me.

I still think if it's at Verizon, it won't come near selling out.

But who even knows anymore?  This could drastically exceed sales predictions, or drastically undersell.  Neither one would surprise me, to be perfectly honest.

Yeah, no offense, but this is going to be one of the bigger tours of the summer. I hate blink-182, and wouldn't go near a Blink/FOB double bill no matter how many weezer's they stuff between them, but this is carte blanche to print money. Go check out sites like absolutepunk.com that have hundreds of thousands of readers, and see how blink-182 is still voted their favorite band year in and year out. I'm not agreeing with it, but its about as bankable of a tour as I could imagine this summer.

You're probably right.  I don't know, something about this said Patriot Center to me.  But I'm curious to see how well it does.  Verizon center would probably be a more financially lucrative option, which would be a big factor towards the tour coming there.

Maybe I've been in all the wrong places, but it just seemed to me like there wasn't as much hype as expected for Blink's reunion.

Yea, I can definitely see this at Verizon and if not selling out, being damn close to it.

Also, a friend told me he saw this on MTV, and tickets will be $20-$60.

i think there is significant demand, but a large portion of their fan base is under 18 - i.e. they don't have a lot of money to spend on concerts and what with current economic conditions their parents might not either.  so they'll sell a lot of tickets, but not at crazy madonna/eagles/stones/etc type prices... thus limiting how much money they'll be able to print.

According to Rolling Stone's website, FOB is opening two-thirds of the tour, and Weezer is opening the other third.

So it will not be all three of them playing at whatever DC area arena they end up coming to.

Oh, that blows any appeal whatsoever this show had away, because you know Weezer will do west coast and we'd get the axis of suck that is Blink/FOB.

More than likely.

I would have endured Blink/FOB to get a cheap, decent length Weezer set, but if they won't even come around here at all, then good riddance.

wait, my understanding was that it will be all 3 bands at all shows, it's just that weez & fob will trade off who opens.  so west coast order = FOB, weez, blink.  east coast = weez, fob, blink.  as always, i could be wrong.

I should have worded that differently; I paraphrased the RS article.

Exact quote:
"But fans hoping to catch all three acts together on the tour, which begins July 24th, may be out of luck: Fall Out Boy are on board for two-thirds of the dates and Weezer will play the other third. Dates for the tour, and which bands are opening in which cites, haven?t been announced at press time."

So It looks like Weezer/FOB are the opening bands, and each show will have one or the other.

Not sure if anyones already said this: FOB is playing Reading and Leeds the weekend of Aug 28-30th, so I would venture and say Weezer will be the DC show opener for August 30th.

In spite of that, I still can't see myself sitting through Blink again.

That actually makes it more tolerable, expecially if the second stage headliner across from Blink was someone good. Blur? (I can hope.)

BTW, that mainstage lineup on Saturday at Leeds is sick.

Got my Beastie tix as well, but only after I let it sit and sit and finally hit refresh. Thankfully my tickets stayed in the system. I haven't seen them in 15 years, since Lollapalooza 1994. Hope it doesn't suck, LOL.

SOLD OUT.
WTF? I had two in my basket - actually got to that window - then it gave me an error message. I printed the screen. Think that counts?

pretty sure it won't.  unless you got a confirmation e-mail that your order went through, i'd assume that you didn't get tickets.  maybe check your bank/credit card to see if you were charged... if nothing there, then you're outta luck.  hopefully you were able to snag one after the initial onslaught.

I thought he worked at Merriweather?

i'm pretty sure sonick has a semi-regular gig at RHL, and does merriweather on-call/when needed... and both gigs are secondary, he has a respectable day job.

I'm good now, too. Thanks folks.
Sunshine, MPP is 3 hours from me on a weekday, otherwise, I'd love to see NIN/Jane. Plus, lawn seating is not my first preference to see a show; esp. after such a drive.
I'd prefer seeing BB at 930 but RHL will work just fine. Either way, thanks, Seth and I'm sure B'more thanks you too for spoiling them as of late. :)

3) "Testicle Hazard" - BEST BAND NAME EVAR?!?!?
Title: Re: Yet Another Just Announced Commetary Thread
Post by: azaghal1981 on June 04, 2009, 10:29:18 pm
1) I only recognize one name in the bottom half but yes, the top half is well worth traveling for, IMO.

2) A couple acts pulled out of the BK one a couple weeks ago with little notice (Merzbow is a huge gaping pussy and is afraid of swine flu) so I guess they're trying to cover their asses although that line does sound awkward.

3) It made me chuckle but I still think Aids Wolf trumps everything else I've heard.

Edit: and The Seal Cub Clubbing Club is a close 2nd.

Trashcan Sinatras @ RNRH

PASS

I'm a big fan of their early work, but their show at the club in 2004 was a total snoozefest....  Very little of their upbeat early material and a total fanboy show.  Lots of requests for obscure material.

well that sucks because NYC was a ton of their early stuff. It was really awesome! Im definitely seeing them again although nothing will compare when i saw them play with radiohead.

With Crocodiles.

Saw this on the white board at the Black Cat last night

Sept 19th
The Horrors

same night as weakerthans @ 930 - which is the better show?  i've never seen either band.

I know nothing about the Weakerthans but have seen both the Horrors and Crocodiles in the last two months so I'm going with the Weakerthans.

But I did find both bands impressive (wish Crocodiles relied a little less on pre-recorded tracks, though).

Woo hoo! Thank you for posting this! Too bad it's the D.A.R., but I'll take it. Any word on pre-sales?

American Express presale began about 45 minutes ago, and lasts through Sunday evening at 10pm.

thanks for the heads up.  got 2 "cheap" seats-- $228.50, which is totally worth the opportunity to hear astral weeks live.  yay!

It would be really nice if an admin could make one of these "Just Announced Commentary" threads sticky so that's it's always located on the front page just under the "Just Announced" thread.

Also, do admins have the capability to move posts from one thread to another?

what is a/s/l?  i feel confused after my nap. in which i slept way too long.  but my dream of being chased by this thing that came out of the ground and could cut through metal was really neat.

a/s/l is old-school chat-speak for a call for "age/sex/location" information - the cry of millions of early 2000's IRC geeks reaching out for the closest thing to sexual contact they'd come to (AKA information).

That dream of yours sounds way cool, tho potentially stressful.

my dreams as of late have been playing out like bizarro, horror films with fleshed out scenes and direction to rival that of what shit has come out in the last two years.  my nap dream was shot in snow fuzzy white cinematography, with a cast of atleast five being killed horribly one by one.  two of us were left being rescued by a car before i woke up.  my dream last night took the cake.  most people would not use the following adjective to describe the experience . . . but it was clear to me that i was in hell, and it was awesome.  the metaphors to real life scenarios, the scenery and situations that were made to leave impressions of forced imagination.  and i think rasputin the mad monk, and members of marilyn manson's original lineup (in what had to be the best make up i have ever seen) were there.

I have heard one new song. It is laughably bad. It's one of those things where it sounds like a producer thinks he/she could turn them into pop stars when in reality, the pop world will continue to not give a rat's ass about them. I'd be bitter if I cared about them, too.

I'll bet half of the VW tix  and 3/4 of the Wilco tix were bought by scalpers.
Couldn't get in for Wilco at all.

And they are selling for two different price points when the whole show itself is GA.  WOW  :o

again, it's because at least one of those listing is from another scalper... so "colin" doesn't control the pricing, he's merely re-posting another person's prices.

ha - if i was "colin", do you think i'd be blabbing about my business model on this board?  i got that link by clicking the "ticket network direct" icon on the bottom left of "colin's" website.  obviously this means i'm on the inside  ::)

i know a bit about scalping - "know your enemy".  in this case, it appears that i'm being indicted for knowing something.  anybody who has ever researched satanism is automatically a satanist, right?

So Colin, are you saying you're also a satanist? First Jack Black, and now you?

lol.  i like where this is going :)  (at least i'm in the company of jack black - could have been tom cruise!)

Basically, Spoon was booked to play the 930 Club, but cancelled to open for the Shins at Merriweather instead.

Your short reply doesn't really answer to question of why they wouldn't play the 9:30 again.

And wasn't Seth responsible for cancelling the 9:30 show and putting them on the Shins bill? I doubt it was Spoon's idea.

Weren't Spoon supposed to play 2 nights at the 930, then both got canceled when they got added to the Shins bill at Merriweather, then people complained, then a 930 show was on again for the next day and the people who had tickets to the Shins show got in free. Then people speculate to this day that they'll never play the 930 again. The end.

I doubt they'll play the club after that Shins fiasco.

There was more to it than that.

Yes, IMP canceled the 930 show and put Spoon on the Shins MPP bill. They then booked Spoon to play a show at the club the next night but the admission to the 930 show had something to do  with some sort of convoluted idea that involved buying tickets to the Shins show...the details of which I'm a little foggy on.

They then listed the Spoon show as "sold out" and didn't sell tickets to it but the turnout to the Spoon show at the club was very low because not many ticket holders from the previous night showed up.

Wasn't it that Spoon 930 ticket holders got free lawn tickets (or reduced pavilion tickets) to the Shins show. Then anyone with a Shins ticket, or an original Spoon ticket got in free to the next night's Spoon at 930 Club show?

It was all something like what all was noted above.

My guess is that Spoon learned 2 important things from all this nonsense.

1. They have a lot of fans in DC.
2. Those same fans want to see them at the 9:30 Club. Period!

Of course, we have no idea what went on with the inner workings of that 'fiasco' but I would suspect that, in the end, if Spoon want to play DC, they will make sure it's at the 9:30 Club. ....Or maybe DC just won't be a 'natural stop' for them anymore on their tours. I would supsect that both camps would do their best to try to make amends and get on with things and Spoon will make a stop at the Club.

Title: Re: Yet Another Just Announced Commetary Thread
Post by: MonkeyPants on January 11, 2010, 03:00:41 pm
twas a combination of all of this.

They had two nights booked at the club - a monday and tuesday.  Mind you, I don't know about the inner workings at IMP or who did what, but since IMP was promoting both those shows and the Shins at Merriweather  on that same Monday, I think the promoter thought it would be better to add them to the Shins bill, convinced them of that and then didn't have two, conflicting indie rock shows.

They set up a deal where you could (1) get a refund of your tix to the 9:30 club show, (2) exchange the 9:30 tix for a lawn seat to the Shins show, or (3) exchange your 9:30 club ticket and pay for an upgrade to the pavilion for the Shins show.

Fans got upset.  I, for one, couldn't go to a show on Monday, and wouldn't trek up to Merriweather for a lawn seat for a band that was perfectly suited to the Club, but NOT to Merriweather.  I'm sure people had lots of other reasons.  Britt personally apologized to the fans by posting on DCist and promised to get it sorted out.

The sorting out meant that Spoon WOULD play the club on Tuesday.  To get into the show, you either could give them (1) your original 9:30 club ticket to see Spoon or (2) your pavilion ticket to the Shins show.  They did not sell new tickets for the Tuesday show.  This seemed backwards since some people might have just opted for a refund, some people exchanged tickets for lawn seats but didn't upgrade to pavilion, and some people never got to buy tickets to the 9:30 shows in the first place, and didn't want to have to buy a pavilion seat for a show they didn't want to or couldn't go to just to go to the show on Tuesday.

So then they said okay anyone with a ticket to the Shins show could come to the Tuesday club show.  They listed it as sold out.  They expected more people would show up than they could let in.  I mean, Merriweather holds way more ppl than the 9:30 Club.

So, from what I heard, Spoon's set at Merriweather wasn't very good.  They sounded bad, the venue wasn't the right venue for them, but alas, there they were.

And then on Tuesday, even though the show was Sold Out and people got in line at 2pm because they were sure there would be 2,000 people trying to get in, the club was only 2/3 full for the Spoon show, which was absolutely fantastic btw.

The band was probably disappointed in the whole thing.  I wouldn't expect them to work with IMP again if they think IMP handled the whole thing poorly.

Of course, this is just based on what I remember and is from an outsider's perspective.  I'm sure there's more to it than that, but it was a mess.

I'm not sure where else in DC they could play, though.  Their show the following April at Sonar was AMAZING, though.  Maybe there...

i remember this "fiasco", didn't realize it was that complicated.

dunno about that... IMP is the biggest game in town, short of playing a theater (DAR!)  or some other non-regular musical venue (a gym, etc).

these kinds of negative experiences can be ironed out, and it might be in the band's best interest to work with IMP.  they're probably in a good position to get a good deal, or at least superior treatment, from 930/IMP.  i doubt 930/IMP would want a second fiasco on their hands...

Not the screening I saw at the MOMA. I know the IFC Theater didnt cut out anything either. Because its not-rated, Im not sure anything will be censored. Cant imagine Von Trier would even go for that. Id imagine you either show it as was intended, or not screen it at all.

The first 5 mins of the film are in some ways the most gorgeous and most fucked-up scene Ive ever seen.

I couldnt even watch the most graphic of scenes. I thought I was going to pass out. A lot of women promptly left at that moment - many others left after the first scene - and others throughout.

This film puts Saw to shame. If only they had thought of this stuff beforehand --- torture porn will forever be changed if any of those writers see this film.

Didn't they cut a lot of the gore out in the American release?

<insert comment here about  how the US is the only country in the west where movies have to be routinely censored/defaced>

That was a very good show! Also, not meaning to jinx things but Anton seems to have gotten his show self together. Guess Iceland has chilled him out in more than one way. He's still a head case as you could clearly tell during that show but he did a good job with not allowing himself to get in his own way.

Any chance of a recording of the Flavor Crystals from that night?

pretty sure the headlining band gets some input re: ticket prices...

you believe that the headliner can tell the promoter how much they're allowed making?  essentially, how to run their business?

i don't think the headliner has anything to do with ticket prices (other than possibly asking to be paid less, and having the tickets be priced less accordingly).

Phoenix has a presale going on right now...

I don't know but DAR is a pretty big place... so yes I'm surprised...

I think as a consumer of rock concerts its my duty to stand up for my rights.... just like I do with Nissan-Jiffy Lube and their parking debacle or with the Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger...

Having said that - there are exceptions to every rule- I bought a good ticket for Phoenix.. not sure I'll use it.. I think its too pricey and might sell it to a friend.

Per Walkie's comment:

just announced:

earthquakes are coming fast and furious since 2009.  prepare for your doom.  our country is due.  i wonder if george clooney cares about what happened in chili, or if another useless song remake is being prepared for the new dead one's exploitation . . . or is america bored of natural disasters already?   i mean come on, the oscars are right around the corner.

This is something that has always bothered me, when genuine caring crosses the line and becomes nothing but pure entertainment. (Usually crappy, at that.)

Hawaii is on the watch now for a tsunami due to the quake so don't go thinking that we are in the clear yet.

Maybe the world really is cracking up and falling apart. Have no way of knowing that for sure but do enjoy life while you can and make the most of it without exploiting others. My heart goes out to the Chileans.

I watched his show a number of times over the years, and I always felt sort of sorry for him. Here was a nice, dorky guy trying to be funny, and he really wasn't. But not too sorry for him. He made a bundle of money and didn't really need my pity.

Yeah, I agree almost entirely. Conan has his occasional funny sketches or moments, but they're just that: occasional. His absence from Late Night is no great loss; CBS' pairing of Letterman and Kilbourne/Ferguson has blown away NBC for the last decade. That said, Leno is the worst of the worst (full disclosure: never seen Carson Daily's show but imagine its similarly awful), and I think people are jumping on the Conan bandwagon just to take shots at that bewildering buffoon.

Admittedly, i'm in bed at 9:30 or 10, and late night tv doesn't really register in my life anymore, especially since I have netflix and a roku.

Letterman was awesome in the 80's, but he's just a shell of what he once was now.

How about a back to back pairing of Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle?  Can anyone get that deal done? Black guys are so much funnier than WASPY white guys anyway.

I adore Craig. He's hilarious.
I do like Conan, he's clever. Decided not to see his show - not for $100 or whatever is slightly less. I'd rather go see him during a taping wherever he lands. Although, an on the road show does sound fun...Iwho knows, maybe people will sell them cheap outside DAR, night of show.

Leno is a doof.

We've just started watching Ferguson, but will only DVR it if there is a guest we're interested in seeing.  I suspect he'd get a bit tedious night after night, but is worth watching in the occasional viewing.  He's got that ah shucks attitude along with not always taking himself so seriously that seems to allow the guest to let their guard down a bit, not unlike Jon Stewart.  He wants to be pals with the guest and not just someone hurrying through a bunch of questions.

I always felt sort of sorry for him. Here was a nice, dorky guy trying to be funny, and he really wasn't.

it always has to be about you, doesn't it?

Not to derail this excellent conversation about late night comedians (please do carry on!), but I've thought about your comment, slept on it, and came to the following decision.

First, I'm going to start a thread called "Things James Ford Thinks You Need to Know" and let it grow to 129 pages. But don't fear, I'll still comment in other threads when I see fit.

Secondly, if the Washington Post will give me blog space, I'll keep a list of the 200+ shows I see this year, rank them, and share them with everyone in internet land, because that's information I think people need to know.

So you guys really think I should give Craig Ferguson a shot? He's always seemed a little too "zany" for my tastes, like a Scottish Steve Martin.

And Julian, I was suggesting Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle, not the return of Arsenio. Both very funny, usually intelligent, sometimes insightful. Put "Good Hair" in your netflix queue. Fun movie.

Julian endorsed him, so if I'm looking to talk about late night talk show hosts, I'd take that as a suggestion.

And Julian counts for at least three people, right?

I dunno, Ford is right, Craig is a bit zany - might annoy him.
(oh and whomever asked about what's his name from MTV - his show is different now (interview setting, not sure they have an audience anymore) and he was never about humor. If that is what you are looking for in your TV night show host. Well, what about Kimmel / Fallon? Wait - that's it - James you should watch George Lopez!
I think we need an offshoot thread for this...

I meant to post this back in December, but this post from James Ford reminded me:

What are you, some Wolftrap attending yuppie snob?  :P

So this Christmas, my mom picked me up the Wilco vinyl reissues, which I was pretty psyched about.  But apparently, as part of her order, they offered her a free t-shirt.  Who would turn that down, right?  Kind of ironically, it just happened to be a shirt from Wilco's tour at Wolftrap.  I'm so conflicted when I wear it...

I'm only a moderate PJ fan, but the live shows seem to be raved about, and I live in Bristow. If lawn tickets are reasonable, I'll go. Any idea of ticket prices?

Looks like tickets are priced 39.00 to 79.00.  So after service charges, those 79 tickets will be like 90 something.  Anyone ever got pit for pearl jam shows if they are not in the ten club?  I have never been able to pull pit but will try again this time.  ;D

seats in the pavilion still available on TM - lol.  back of the pavilion, granted, but if a heavy hitter like PJ can't sell out the pavilion more than a month after onsale, you know your venue sucks.

Wow - There have been seats in the 100-level available for over a week now.  There's also a "Discount Offer" for tickets where they're $55, but you need a password.    Are they really having that much trouble selling tickets to this one?  Maybe I won't need to leave work early after all.

the only way you get floor at a PJ show without getting tickets through the fan club directly is if there are an odd number of seats in the rows.  Then they usually sell single aisle seats really close to the show - like within a day of the show or something.

i'm having flashbacks to a show i saw at the old hammerjacks with that same lineup (i think)

how long ago was that?  was it good?  i've been listening to both bands for a long time, but i've never seen them perform.

i find the "all original members" part strange, since other than groovie and buzz, the kult has been a revolving door of hired musicians on stage.  the only true "original members" are those two, and it isn't the kult unless they're there... so that tag-line seems like a marketing gimmick to me.  i'm assuming it means their first lineup.

yeah those are the main two....mainly Charles Levi as well, since he was with them for a long time.  I can't remember when that show was...hammerjacks closed in '97, so maybe 93 or 94?

i feel like TKK have never been good live, always seemed to be lip syncing and not really playing.

lords of acid definitely weren't really playing their instruments, but the singer was nice to look at, heh.

As for Belle and Sebastian, a couple nights before the MPP show, they played at the Hollywood Bowl  with the LA Philharmonic and I was there. To describe it as epic doesn't even begin to do it justice. The band were in top form, the show was totally sold out, and it was a very special kind of night. It started off like Beethoven and everyone was polite, clapped and were on good behavior, but by the end people were going absolutely bonkers. At one point Stuart ran up into the crowd and then people were literally running down the aisles, dancing, climbing on the partion in front the stage, and the band was TOTALLY into it. There was a stage invasion and the Philharmonic musicians were scrambling to protect their instruments. It was hilarious. I think that following a show like that (which they stated firmly was a career highlight), the MPP show may have seemed like the inevitable comedown. How does one compare the 2 shows? They're still one of the most consistent live bands I've seen, and I've seen them probably close to a dozen times.

Actually the B&S MPP show was pretty Meh, even Stuart thought so, but the 9:30 shows prior that were great.  Totally dug their last album, it was nice to hear some of the bands other influences besides Felt and Nick Drake.

I can see how their amphitheater show would have a tough time living up to their 9:30 shows, but the setlist was incredible, the place was packed and we had driven in from Michigan the day before to meet up with friends in Baltimore. Aside from Stuart going Axl Rose, it would have been hard pressed for me not to enjoy the show. And being close enough to shake Stuart's hand was pretty incredible. Christ, they even played the Model.

The five songs I really, really want to hear next time around:

Seeing Other People
I Love My Car
Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner
There's Too Much Love
Rollercoaster Ride

I've seen them do SOP, LOAMDR and TTML, but to my knowledge they never play ILMC or RR. It'll be interesting to see what they dig out on the coming tour. I never, ever get tired of hearing them play "Sleep the Clock Around". I saw them at the Tower Theater in Philly and this beefy jock got up on stage, took his shirt off and began to swing it around like a Chippendale. The security wanted to kick him off but Stuart insisted that he stay and dance and the band were laughing so hard they could barely play.

Glad people love B&S.

FOr me the great B&S was Tigermilk, IF You're Feeling SInister and Boy with the arab strap (and the 4 early singles).. That stuff is superb.... They were on a roll that I had not seen since The Smiths...This was some very important music to me.

AFter that their music turned to boring crap....except for "I Fought in a War"

Its just an opinion but at least to me it was heartbreaking to see the way it unraveled. Stuart Murdoch letting the other members write songs was just a terrible idea.

I pretty much stopped following them.

I'm adding my B&S comments over to the Just Announced Commentary FYI, in an effort to keep Kosmo and other folks happy since not everyone appreciates geeky Scottish indie rock (although I'm pretty sure Kosmo does).

Anyone else catch B&S at the OLD Black Cat?  ;)  DAR shows are for suckers!!

Yup...I saw them at the Metro in Chicago and it was a very lackluster show. It was the first after Isobel had been "sick". During Momus, the opening band, she was sitting behind me in the balcony and I asked her if I bought her a drink, would she put me on the guest list for DC? She was very sweet and said of course. So the afternoon of the Black Cat show, I was tooling around 16th Street and ran into Stuart and Isobel. They seemed to be having a very intense discussion, but I gave them some directions and sure enough that night Isobel had take care of me. It was a phenomenal show, blew away the Chicago one. Wasn't it close to Halloween and some of the band members were wearing costumey type get-ups? I seem to remember Isobel wearing tiger ears and she had her face painted with whiskers.

well now that U2 is out....

Yeah Robert Plant is the one that will be hard to convince.

i've never even listened to a single note of a single song by belle and sebastian . . . but just the name alone leads me to believe that they would not be enjoyed by me.  how one sided of the fence i am.

You know, I don't think that new Wavves is half bad.  In fact, it might be half good.  Gotta re-listen, but I found it an immediate improvement on the first album

And fucking Wavves.

Travelled to Vancouver for work, then backpacking near Whistler and microbrew drinking in Seattle. Good time, though no live music.

You'll have two weeks of vacation (somewhere nice, I hope) to figure out the answer to my question.

Welcome back, James Ford.

on vacay, were we?

you're back just in time.  i'm out starting late tomorrow for two weeks.  glad you'll be here to keep the predictability factor somewhat constant.

backpacking in BC, beer-drinking in seattle... not bad at all.  hopefully one offset the effects of the other :)

i'm off for a week in holland, then a week in ukraine.  should be interesting, although relaxation might be in short supply.

as for the trivia question, i don't know if i'd be able to answer it even if i used The Google.

In eight days, I ran 45 miles, backpacked 11, hiked 7, walked 15-20, sea kayaked for two hours, and exercise biked for 95 minutes.

And gained 4.5 pounds.

I drank alot of good beer, and ate alot of good food. So the scales tipped toward the food and beer consumption.

Time to drop the 4.5 this week.

Holland sounds good, not sure about the Ukraine.

I bet Twangirl would have a good guess regarding my question.

Carried over from the Boom Boom Satellites convo in the Just Announced thread (http://www.930.com/forum/index.php?topic=12734.msg310077#new):

Boom Boom Satellites 10/13 6:00 PM

Oh, yeah!

But what a crappy time. Too early for a whole lot of working folks to get there in time and their music is best enjoyed later in the evening if you are seeing them live.

So they are worth checking out? I admittedly was forced to ask Wikipedia who they were and am intrigued now.

Ohh a Jag recommendation... must check them out.

Jagy knows her shit  ;D

Thanks guys!

Boom Boom Satellites are a pretty cool Japanese Electronic band. Suspect that Az and Killsaly will like them. Not all that sure about you, William The Great. Maybe.

Odd timing as I was just thinking of uploading one of their songs to Air Atlantic Underground Radio (http://www.live365.com/stations/airatlantic). Got to rustle around and find my CD first. I know that I just saw it the other day while looking for something else.

Not for all tastes but they are pretty good if you enjoy a little high polished Electronica in your musical diet from time to time. They are pretty good at what they do.

Check out the song "On The Painted Desert". It's pretty cool. ...Off to upload it to the station.

(In connection with the Boom Boom Satellites show at the 9:30 Club on Thurs. 10/13...)

I remember buying a 12-inch of "On the Painted Desert" to get the DJ Krush mix and also liking the "Vocal Mix feat. Dice."

Now I can't remember what the DJ Krush mix sounds like... will have to locate it in my record collection and give it a listen.

Last month he also announced he was 'too old to be singing about girls' and was only going to dj and produce/remix in the future.

hadn't heard that, but that's a damn shame.  i've seen him live twice in NYC and both times were awesome.

Anyone here going to see Boom Boom Satellites tonight? Would love to go but due to time and space restraints, that's not possible.

Still say the show is ridiculously way too early but I guess that's the best that could be booked this time around.

If anyone goes, please post a review. Thanks.  ;)

i have to say most of the indie artists worshipped on this board would do the same thing if they could get anyone to pay that kind of money.. in the modern world its all about the benjamins.. if you got them you're good and if you don't fuck you.

do you seriously believe both those statements, or are you such a fan-boy that you'll say anything to defend your idols?

1) i can think of a lot of artists that are worshipped on this board who would refuse to charge their fans $1,525 for a ticket.  the don't want to play to a sea of middle-aged doctors, lobbyists and investment bankers.  the obvious example is jesus lizzard and i suspect 99% of hardcore/punk bands.  some formerly "indie" acts who could charge that kind of money don't: radiohead could easily ask $1K+ for front row, but have made a point of keeping tickets $50-$60.  trent reznor was asked to charge a lot more than he did for his farewell tour and he refused (partially because he was a little embarrassed by how much the NINJA tickets cost).
2) if you believe more money = more happiness... good luck with that (some money is obviously required).  it ain't all about the benjamins.

dude.. come on.. please..

I'm not even a fan of Bon Jovi much less a fanboy...someone called me with a free ticket close up and I needed a night out..

But the world is the way it is...there are exceptions... but in general everyone's trying to make as much money as possible..

Guided By VOices is playing NYE in NYC for about $80... why do you think they are playing a few weeks after their tour ends?

Sting who made a name as a human rights guy played recently for the dictator of Kazakhstan or some country over there.. maybe Uzbekistan... this guy tortures people.. why do you think he did it?

I don't have any benjamins btw ... i'm just telling you what i see all around me and I'm not going to sugarcoat it..  Indie bands charge less because they can't afford to charge more (in the main).. And watch out with bands like Radiohead.. you might be surprised in a few years.. a lot of these bands are going to be auctioning the  best seats.. thats not far way...

kosmo . . . come on.  you're ruining the "tennis volley" back n forth of two opinions that for some reason i found interesting, seeing how it was based on bon jovi.  like watching two cable news providers going head to head at it for the quickest clip before the other one does (you know fox news usually gets it first (murdoch) and they have half naked, starry eyed females for reporters).

All of these are like the others

Album of the Year Grammy nominees: Arcade Fire, Eminem, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry

So what does "indie" mean anymore besides being on a "indie rock" label?

Counting down the days until Arcade Fire signs with a major label, joining Death Cab, Decemberists, and Frighten Rabbit, in order to become even more mainstream.  It's the all those PBRs that will be cried into, that I feel sorry for.

Walkie, I'm almost sure Birds of Maya would be up your alley.

More specifically, this last record. Lo-fi, blown out, jammed out psychedelic bluesy rock.

so i went around the intrawebs searching for their music . . . and alot of what i found was veeeeerrrrryyy lofi and almost not listenable.  then i came across this song called "killer in the snow" off their 2008 vol. 1.  damn azag, you nailed it.  my alley is up.

Geez my concert schedule is so bare in January and February! WTF? A lot of venues have but a handful of shows if that? Did everyone shoot their wad in 2022?

I can’t recall previous years where Fillmore had two shows in the entire month of January! Black Cat 🐈‍⬛ pretty much same with THREE shows. Take away the dance parties and 930 has 10 concerts ….obviously Anthem has a grand total of two shows at the very end of month for January…Lincoln has ONE!

I know things slow down in January but this seems more dramatic than usual

So based on The Cure ticketing announcement will they be rolling out twickets.live here in the US?  it's been in use over the UK for awhile and lots of artists support the service.. it allows tickets to be transferred between fans only at face value.. Seems like The Cure is taking a very sensible approach to their tickets, hopefully it works!!!

so at 3:45 pm, the missus texted me "i got this weird code from ticketmaster this morning... was that meant for you?"  i completely forgot that i also signed her up for the presale.  so i get in, and initially there was a pair in the last row, far corner, AKA worse seats in the house.  i hesitated for a few seconds, and they were gone.  not sure those were real available tickets, i suspect i would have gotten the "sorry, someone beat you to them" message.

anyhoo, can now confirm that the show it 100% sold out (not even singles)... except for wheelchair/accessible seating.  no, not going there.

i guess it was worth keeping that browser tab open: they released side-view seats.  per the seating map i'm in line with the 3 or 4th row of the floor, but halfway up the lower bowl.  not a complete side-view.  whatever, i'm in.  yeay for tenacity and/or dumb luck.

I’ve done the wheelchair thing before. People do not appreciate the humor of you throwing down your crutches halfway thru and pretending the power of music has divinely healed you.
I had the idea for a dating site for handicap people to get free concert tickets
But it seemed like the backlash wouldn’t be worth it it

these both made me lol.  good work team!

in furtherance of the band wanting to keep this show affordable: the last 5 rows of the upper side-view tickets are $25 (might have been that all last-5-rows uppers were $25, can't tell anymore).  those are undesirable seats, but nice of the band to have such a price differential which allows financially-constrained fans to attend.

Ok the ALL CAPS is still getting on my nerves… but bold move!

So am I getting a $20 refund?

Also, Jules looks like he is not happy about your NY plans

I HAVE BEEN TOLD: StubHub has pulled listings in all markets except NY, Chicago, Denver (IE. CITIES IN STATES THAT HAVE LAWS PROTECTING SCALPERS). PLEASE DON'T BUY FROM THE SCALPERS

got into the ticketmaster queue for the cure this morning - 800 people in front of me.  by the time my spot came out, show totally sold out - only thing available were "resale" tickets - $107 for lawn, $300 for floor, up to $500 for some sections.

yeah, did the same thing
was 1155 in queue and got in
then snagged a $300 pit ticket and tried multiple credit cards/paypal and even signed up for Klarna, but could not complete the purchase

so decided to get on on my PC and the floor was $1100 and couldn't actually buy it??

I'm thinking some people were able to do resale tix, even though you were not supposed to and tixmaster cut it off??

It wasn’t! I got pit tickets for $99 each no problem!!!!

Maybe some of their fanbase has turned into empty nesters wanting to rock? Or the kids are older now? Or they got a new fanbase? RNR Hall of Fame!? Post Covid throw caution to the wind?

I am stumped.

Honestly, since they replaced the roof at Merriweather they added to either side of the pavilion what they are calling a Vertical Lawn.  Get there early and you can probably get a good spot in it.  The Cure will be covered in smoke anyways and I believe that setup also had easy access to bars.  Can’t seem to find any recent pictures of how that’s all setup.  Also, shade and no slope…

OK now do one where his head is on James Spader's body and he's kissing Holly Hunter while a terrible Ric Ocasek performance is going on in the background.

I think the verified fan thing made it worse - never had a problem getting ticket before...this time..I'm shut out?? in both philly and Merriweather?  a friend did end up letting me buy his 2 extra tickets, but man....what a shitshow

I think the verified fan thing made it worse - never had a problem getting ticket before...

- you've had a 100% success rate?  even for mega-demand shows?
- i believe that VF improved things a lot, notably by killing the bots.  between each fan/account needing a separate phone number, and the inability to transfer, the bots had to have seen this as a no-go (or a high-effort-for-low-volume endeavor)
- all the technology in the world can't change the fact that demand >>>>> supply.  concert veterans like ourselves might have an advantage, normally, but VF levels the playing field...

Guys, I think we're doing it wrong :(

"Rapino argued that fans are willing to pay high prices, even those inflated by dynamic pricing, because they see “concerts as a really special moment in their life.”

“It’s a magic moment, maybe twice a year – way cheaper than Disneyland, or the Super Bowl, or the NFL or the NBA playoffs, or an expensive night out,” Rapino said. “So it’s really cheap overall considering.

“This is a great, great product that people will buy, as they’re gonna buy the Gucci bag. They’re gonna buy moments in life where they will step up, and spoil themselves – the big screen TV and or whatever it may be.”

He continued: “This is a business where we can charge a bit more. I’m not saying excessively, but it’s a great two-hour performance of a lifetime, that happens once every three, four years in that market. You don’t have to underprice yourself — low to middle income [people] will make their way to that arena for that special night.”

So by his logic, if you go to 25 shows/year, fees should be almost non-existent? I do like the idea of dynamic fees!!!

Or maybe this: pay a $50 annual membership and get fee-free ticketing.
